My partner and I popped into plates on the off chance they had space on a Friday night, luckily they had space! we were actually on our way to an Indian restaurant around the corner, and I am so glad we took a chance on plates. They had a set meal (including meat) for £48pp and I must say it was well worth the money! We had to take our food away because it was so much. The flavours were incredible, we loved trying Pani puri- such a fun experience, all of the meat dishes were so tender and delicious. I don't have a bad thing to say! The stand out dishes were the tortilla, chicken curry, greens & paneer, and the rice, poppadoms and naan were better than I have ever tried before! Service was amazing, we loved the personal touch, to be able to speak with the owner & chef. If you have tried plates for brunch, you must try their Indian plates! Incredible- coming from someone who generally is not a fan of Indian food..

It's probably a good thing I'm not a restaurant critic because I'd automatically deduct a star for the experience we had at Plates. I have never left a negative review in my life and whilst I do realise this is no fine dining restaurant, I expect the basics of customer service to be right, dear me it was bad! Where do I start? Having arrived at the restaurant for a brunch booking, we had to wait for several minutes to be greeted and seated, the waitress took us to our table, which was very small and so close to the next customer table it might as well have been joined together - also it was less than five feet from the entrance door so you can imagine it was not pleasant each time the door opened on a winter morning with a draft of -6 degrees outside and no customer heating to combat the perishing temperature. Having been seated we waited for several more minutes before conceding that we would need to approach the bar for a menu. If this wasn't enough having scanned the menu we had to approach the bar again to clarify if there was table service as despite trying our hardest to attract someone's attention to take our order we were ignored. Finally our drinks and mains ordered which we thought would dramatically improve on the slow and cumbersome experience but alas... we then only received part of our drinks order first and the rest of our order we were drip fed - I know it's called Plates but honestly I didn't expect their USP to be one served individually every several minutes - we had to send it back because we had a side order arrive and go cold before our mains arrived. Several minutes passed and ta dah our other drinks and complete food order arrived. The drinks and food were pleasant yet it was just unfortunate how poor the service was. The whole thing was a bit like a fast - food restaurant focused on quantity rather than quality I'm afraid, To round it off we had to approach the bar to settle the bill and they had the audacity to add service - we will never go there again !!! It was terrible !!! This place has little value to offer and the service was very poor.

We stopped as we were passing through. Dog friendly, which was great for us. Brunch menu was varied, I really enjoyed the pesto mushrooms. Lovely presentation. Great coffee too

Nice brunch! I visit here Regularly, it’s always good although this time disappointed to see the bread has changed and i was charged £3 for 2 slices of dry thin toast instead of the thick better quality sourdough they used to serve as toast. Otherwise all good.

AVOID IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES. We had a very bad experience here today. As a Coeliac, unable to eat gluten, I asked if I could have the GF chicken, GF salad and GF chips without the gluten wrap and was told ‘no’. When I asked why they said ‘it depends if they’re busy’ (I looked around and saw only five other tables). When I queried this I was told ‘they couldn’t deconstruct the dish’. So I asked does it come into the restaurant pre-assembled? They said ‘no it’s all fresh and put together by the chef’. So I asked why they simply couldn’t assemble it without the wrap? The answer was ‘because they weren’t allowed’. So we got to our feet to leave only for an apparently more senior young woman to arrive to speak to us, who at least was not impolite and wearing a dirty apron like the first waitress and we had the same mad conversation again. I told her I felt that what they were saying was nonsensical. She asked ‘if I wanted her to ask again if they could serve me’. I said no as they’d refused me twice and I had lost all trust as I’ve never heard so much nonsense in my life. I’ve worked in Greece and have always been catered for in a helpful and friendly fashion - but apparently this isn’t possible in Berkhamsted. I felt discriminated against and angry by how they’d treated me and their weird reasoning. I only hope that they and nobody they love is unfortunate enough to have an allergy and be treated this way. They should be ashamed. We then went a few doors down to Pizza Express and were greeted by a charming man whose first question was ‘any allergies?’ who explained the huge variety of GF menu options and brought us a delicious meal with a smile!

From the moment we walked in, we were captivated by the venue’s breathtaking charm. The building itself is a stunning piece of history, with intricate details that tell a story in every corner. We were warmly greeted by the attentive staff, who promptly guided us to our table. The service was impeccable from start to finish. The starters set the tone for an incredible dining experience—fresh, perfectly cooked, and bursting with flavor. By the time the mains arrived, we were so eager to dive in that we forgot to take a picture—but trust us, they were just as exceptional. The desserts? Simply out of this world. The ambiance is both authentic and elegant, making it an ideal setting for weddings, birthday celebrations, and special occasions. Plus, there’s plenty of nearby parking and easy access via train. A truly unforgettable experience—we can’t wait to return!

It's such a wonderful place. It's a place to go for having something bougie. If you're looking for something better than a high street chain, then this is the place to visit. They even sell wine by the bottle to take away.

One of the worst food I have ever tasted if not the worst. I tried their chicken and cheese quesadilla, chicken was very hard and had a very bad smell to it. Highly disappointed
