By the time the mains arrived, we were so eager to dive in that we forgot to take a picture—but trust us, they were just as exceptional. The desserts? Simply out of this world. The ambiance is both authentic and elegant, making it an ideal setting for weddings, birthday celebrations, and special occasions. Plus, there’s plenty of nearby parking and easy access via train. A truly unforgettable experience—we can’t wait to return!

Disappointing Service Experience I recently dined at The Gatsby and unfortunately, my experience was marred by poor customer service. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that the staff was disorganized and inattentive. We waited for nearly 15 minutes before anyone acknowledged us, and even then, the service was slow throughout our meal. Our server seemed uninterested and hardly checked in on us, even though the restaurant wasn’t busy. While the food itself was decent, the lack of attention and poor service left a sour taste. I hope the management takes this feedback seriously, as there’s clear room for improvement in the service aspect. I won't be returning anytime soon unless there's a significant change

I put 3 stars for atmosphere just because we were the only customers in the restaurant so no atmosphere really. It was a shame as food and service was great.

Very disappointed with visit to The Gatsby last night. There is obviously a problem with staff and maybe there is a change of ownership. Only offered a 3 course supper for pre-cinema meal. We allowed plenty of time - but still the meal was very slow. They need to change their pricing. We didn't have time for pudding - as the whole experience had been so so slow! Wouldn't recommend unless they sort themselves out. The toilets need a proper clean and a lick of paint.

The menu is really varied and the food and cocktails were really nice. I had the veg meze platter (photo) which was tasty. My husband had filet steak, which was a nice lump but also came with really tasty gravy.

Such an amazing evening for my birthday. Four of us went for drinks and meze and nibbles. Cocktails and bits to eat. All were amazing. Mehmed looked after us so well and was the most amazing host.

we came on Monday for lunch and were impressed with the food quality. It was a cold day, and the waiter turned on the heating for us. My bruschetta was excellent, and so was the minced lamb kofte. the other order was Turkish beef sausage, also excellent, as was the gatsby fish pie. That was a satisfying and filling meal for both of us. Service was excellent. We shall return.

Perfect setting food tasted delicious only error was kitchen sent one meal out with cold item. Servers were very apologetic discounted bill.

Absolutely five star, very attentive staff with delicious food and an excellent pre-cinema menu. I particularly loved the homemade bread and my partner says that the chocolate delice dessert was “heavenly” 🌟 We were also very impressed by the wine and by the exceptional service and attentive care by Mehmet - we would 100% recommend and plan to come back soon, such good food and value as we had three courses, shots, cocktails and a bottle of wine for just over £100

We came for the set lunch which was excellent quality and delivered quickly with friendly charm. It was very quiet so I can't comment on service when it is full.

Not too sure why this place has such good reviews, we traveled 35min to this place from a town that has around 20 restaurants just for trying “new place”. Food was average. Scallops were nice but the rest just very basic and much much less quality compared to any well run Turkish place. Beetroot dip was dry, pita soaked fried in oil very bad and would prefer fresh. Sea bass too much oil and butter- supposed to be healthier option of all bur really fatty all around. Lamb pieces (shish) very soft but also odd in texture at the same time almost seems like sousvied forever and then grilled rapidly. Didnt enjoy. Service was ok although wine was never topped up and took a while to get attention for the bill, another 7min to pay the bill.

Been to The Gatsby multiple times. Always excellent food, great service and a treat to have live piano music during the meal. Highly recommend.

We had a lovely afternoon here. Perfect place for a catch up with family and friends. The atmosphere was so relaxing, the staff are very attentive. We experienced their wines, cocktails and some nibbles, all were really good. Would definitely recommend a visit.

The Gatsby was our go to place under the ownership of Nick for quality food, great ambience and fantastic service but no longer!!! Just awful!! Service is slow even when quiet, food below average and no ambience. The menu on the side of the building makes this place feel cheap. Many locals in the town feel the same and don’t understand why you would change such a successful business!!?? Thankfully there are many other good places to eat.

We've enjoyed previous visits here, but it will no longer be our go-to for a pre-cinema meal or Sunday lunch. Having booked in advance and requested our favourite bar table halfway up the stairs, we arrived to find no table. We were only given the main menu, no bar menu. However, we'd already decided on the burger, which we ordered. Long wait for service. Requested salt/pepper/mayo. Another long wait. Staff generally inattentive with poor grasp of English language. On settling the bill, my wife queried the total and asked to see the bar menu, which advertised lower prices than those charged. We were then told that the printed menu prices were 'old'. On protesting this disparity, we were reluctantly given cash refunding the difference, although the obligatory service charge remained. I gather the Gatsby is under new ownership – a shame, as it no longer offers the service and quality of experience enjoyed under the previous owners. The loss of its appeal is perhaps summed up by the replacement of the splendid period 'Great Gatsby' wall graphic by a photo of the more modern DiCaprio. Berkhamsted has so many good eateries which we shall turn to in future – Gatsby has lost its magic.

Our 1st time visiting the Gatsby restaurant since the new owners have taken over. The menu is primarily Turkish. We had the Pre-theatre 3 course set menu, which offered good value. This is offered 4.30pm- 6.30pm Monday to Saturday. We visited early on Saturday evening, the restaurant was mostly full. Service was good. Pianist playing background music added to ambience.

The Gatsby has been a favourite of ours for many years but this was our 1st visit since it changed hands. They are redecorating so we sat in the bar as the restaurant was closed. It was a little chilly but the warmth of the welcome and the attention of the staff certainly made up for it. The food was delicious and I cannot wait for our next visit. I am so happy that our favourite restaurant is still good, in fact better than it was.

Popped in after the cinema just to look at the menu. It was just late afternoon so very quiet. Liked the look of the place and the menu so decided there and then to eat here. Very attentive but not over attentive staff. We were seated by a radiator as it was a cold day, noted and thank you. We had the set menu. The food was well served and delicious. We were thrilled to have ‘happened’ upon such a lovely place to eat. Planning a follow up outing with friends at a busier time to enjoy everything this gem has to offer. The four stars for atmosphere was only because not many people want to eat at quarter past four!

We came here for my 40th birthday last night, there were 10 of us in total, and we had an amazing time. The food was absolutely delicious, everyone's meal was beautiful and could not be faulted. What really made it special however was the service - it was fantastic. All the staff were friendly, efficient and really couldn't do enough for us all, even engaging with my younger daughter and having her in fits of giggles. Thank you for such a wonderful birthday evening!

Gorgeous upscale venue with dance and music performances. Very professional staff. Such a shame it's outside London, although that is probably why it can afford to be a lush experience.

Great taste and lovely atmosphere. All the staff made us feel welcome and special thank you to Mehmet who was attentive the whole evening despite being a busy New Year’s Eve. From the starter to dessert, everything was spot on. Especially the beef bourguignon was to die for! I would definitely visit again and would recommend anyone reading this review.

I would highly recommend The Gatsby, the food was great and had so much flavor, so many options available and also the food is halal so everyone is catered for! The staff were amazing, Mehmet especially went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed from starters, mains, deserts and drinks. The live entertainment and the atmosphere was amazing. We had a lovely lunch yesterday. The fish pie was excellent although I could have done with some veg like carrots and broccoli. As it was a festive week they had a band playing jazz which was nice but a little too loud for lunchtime conversation. However I'd definitely go again before going to the Rex.

Though the cocktails were nice, the dinner we had was rather lacklustre. We were warmly welcomed and service was friendly, if a little uncoordinated between the staff. Mixed mezze starter was delicious, if less generous in portion size than most Turkish restaurants I know. I had the burger, which was perfectly good. Most of the party went for moussaka. Apparently the veggie moussaka wasn't up to much, and it certainly didn't look appealing. The venue itself is very attractive, clean, and comfortable. It's just a shame the food didn't really live up to it.

Website said there was a live pianist on Saturday nights. Arrived to be told this had now been changed to Sunday. Update your website to avoid disappointing your customers!!!

Went for 60th birthday meal. Setting and staff were both very good. Unfortunately let down by slowness of food coming out and when it eventually did, was cold. There wasn't any shortage of bar and waiting staff, so issues presumably were in kitchen.

Just the two of us, last minute booking We had been recently too so were looking forward to coming again The roast was excellent I had the roast pork shoulder and my wife had roast chicken breast The portions were decent, the food was hot and the veg fresh Treacle tart and coffee to finish The service was attentive and swift. The usual background piano music to accompany and the restaurant had a good busy buzz to it Under previous ownership the price of a sunday roast was quite prohibitive it is now much better value for money and good quality We'll be back

The meze was great and steak exceptional. Service was really good and has a grand atmosphere. Not convinced it offered value for money. Especially for non meat-eaters. Penne arabiatta or vegetable skewer are things any student can cook. Surely, you can offer something more exotic, especially at your prices?

Amazing place Amazing and welcoming owner!!!

First time back at the Gatsby since new owners. On a positive note the Sunday lunch was the same as it always was absolutely delicious! On arriving for a midday table we were pretty much ignored and had to go into the main restaurant to find someone. The person incharge was in the office looking at the internet. There was a photo shoot taking place (slightly odd when the restaurant was booked for customers) the photographer was swearing which was inappropriate as we had young children with us. They did however leave after 10 minutes but adding this on to the non welcome it was rather disappointing. We had to ask for the really loud music to be turned down, the waitress was apologetic and said it wasn’t meant to be that loud or Rocky !! Shame as first impressions count so we won’t be rushing back.

I went to the Gatsby a few weeks ago Prior and thought it was great. Having went again this Friday very excited as they had a singer advised and organised a girls night.. to then turn up and they have no entertainment as advertised. Really disappointed

Ate here pre a Rex cinema visit. Excellent waiter service, very polite, very exact, willing to please. Had carrot & cauliflower soup - absolutely delicious and creamy, followed by seabass - delightful. Would highly recommend

We enjoyed a fabulous company brunch catering for 100 staff. Lots of options to choose from on the brunch menu and all with perfect poached eggs!

First time here. We had awesome cocktails and the wine was excellent. We had a starter of mushrooms in a garlic cheese sauce with bread which was delicious. Our waiter was Mehmet, who was brilliant, totally attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Definitely coming back to try the full menu!

We hosted our wedding reception at The Gatsby this weekend and it was incredible. Ollie was great with our prep and getting everything sorted and set up on the day! The food was incredible, Head Chef Matt helped us create a great menu for a winter wedding, with many compliments that the food was the best they had ever had at a wedding. The team went above and beyond to make sure us and all our guests had an amazing time! Everything was exactly as we planned and the team added lots of special details. Our suppliers all commented on what a great experience the team provided for them and said they were made to feel like family and would recommend the venue to anyone looking for a venue in the area! Can't thank you guys enough, we had the best time and will see you very soon :)

We chose the Gatsby for our wedding venue and it was the best decision we made! It was incredible from start to finish. The staff were so attentive and made sure every detail was exactly as we wanted it. The communication throughout was great, and we felt a lot more relaxed with the planning knowing everything was in hand. The food was exceptional. It can be tricky to produce quality food at scale but every dish, every canapé and every cocktail was perfect. The value for money considering the level of detail and quality was mind blowing. I cannot recommend the Gatsby and their team highly enough. They made our day the best it could possibly be. Thank you so much for everything!

What a great place to come to especially if you have a venue going on like I went to everything was just great the food service was great the staff was amazing..Except one staff did drop abit of gravy on my shirt by accident but you know accidents do happen and it didn’t over shadow the rest my evening…

We have been going to the Gatsby for many years, and last night was our final one. We go every year as a family for a birthday celebration, we sat at our table and were handed menus, we all made our selections and ordered (most of us went for the fillet steak as this is their signature dish) about 10 mins after ordering we were told they only had three fillet steaks left!! (7pm on a Friday! Ridiculous !! ) so we had to all sit there are work out who is getting steak and who isn’t! This was a very awkward situation to put us in! Then as the evening progressed service was slow, and trying to get attention of a waiter/waitress was an impossible task! If the restaurant had been busy you could understand it, but there was only one other table and the rest of the place was empty! (This speaks volumes!) Last year our bill was £850 and this time it was £540 the difference being down to the restaurant! No fillet steak and slow drink service, this cost them a £300 loss of revenue, very bad management. To top it all they put service on the bill!! So if nothing else they have a good sense of humour!!!
