Plateau in Brighton and Hove

Following a great afternoon at the “Natural Wine Fair” we went for a lovely bottle of Anatheme Red with some delicious Nibbles with friends. Just Perfect…

Having just moved to Brighton from London 8 months ago I was worried I wouldn't find somewhere as good to satisfy my love of quality cocktails. Actually I have to say this place has so far topped for me my favourite ones in London (MU, Brilliant Corners, Three Sheets). I've been three times with my girlfriend and can only say so far: The wine list is high quality, great value, and in great taste. Cocktails are excellent and knowledgeable. The small plates I've had have been delicious and have catered towards my gluten free requirement as a celiac. The atmosphere and staff are friendly, inviting and helpful. Love this place!

Despite living in Brighton for years, have never tried Plateau until last week. What a revelation! Fantastic offering. Six of us had the home made bread and oil, mackerel, cods roe, veg fritters, courgettes and more! Couldn't fault any dish, we are already thinking about our next meal there! Absolutely recommend..

Dropped by on the spur of the moment and ordered a carafe of white wine which wasn't really to our taste. The bill wasn't either as it was £28.00 plus a service charge of £3.50 (just to bring drinks?)

Stopped for drinks and a quick bite. Cocktails were great, good natural wines selection, croquettes and dish with cauliflower were delicious.

Delightful little wine bar / restaurant with friendly service. Favourites on the June menu were the croquettes, cauliflower and cod dishes, all beautifully prepared.

Firstly the staff are fabulous and very informative about the wines which they are selling. The food was pretty good too nice surroundings very clean.

Gorgeous gorgeous service, great place for an aperitif (get the bread and oil to snack on with your drink- trust me). We loved it so much we went back for lunch the next day and found a delicious selection of small plates. Wine excellent, cocktails creative and tasty. Can’t wait to come back.

Lovely wine, service and atmosphere

My absolute favorite of all the Brighton places we dined at over the weekend. Friendly, attentive service, excellent small plates and a truly interesting wine list. We moved on for dinner elsewhere as we had a prior reservation but I quite wish we had stayed on. A real gem of a venue with vibes in spades.

Shabby chic French Tapas restaurant in the South Lanes. We had been searching for a restaurant that did steak tartare and stumbled across this one !!! It did not disappoint. It was a starter portion , but we were not looking for a big lunch and it was the perfect size . Very tasty and delighted we found it. We saw other items from the menu being served , the croquettes looked good. The wine was unusual in that the white we ordered was cloudy, but it tasted good. The staff were helpful and this is well worth a visit, we will return !!!

Really loved our dinner here this evening. The food was excellent and really reasonably priced for what it was. We tbought there was a great vibe and the staff were lovely. There was a slight delay on one of the starters but they were so apologetic and even took it off the bill which we hadn't asked for. Will definitely come again :)

Delicious tapas, but maybe a bit of style over substance. The wine list was wonderful. The service was super sweet and the decor a dream. A great place to eat before a gig.

Stumbled across this lovely spot. We were looking for a mid-pm glass of wine and bite to eat. Perfect. Sat at the bar, had a carafe of white wine and some small plates that were delicious. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Would definitely recommend.

We visited on a Monday night and had an excellent welcome. The staff were very knowledgeable about every detail of the food, wine and cocktails which helped our choices. The food was amazing and they have a very talented chef without doubt. The only issues we faced were two items ordered not being brought to us. Firstly the bread which hadn’t arrived by the mid point in the meal which was odd, so we enquired about this and it arrived 5 mins later. The other dish we had ordered we asked about at the end of the meal so it came very late, around 15 mins after other dishes were finished. We were charged for the bread twice on the bill so I had to ask for this to be refunded at the end. It’s no problem for restaurants not to write orders down as they take them, but it’s frustrating if this ends up ending in mistakes. It’s a slight shame as otherwise it would have been an easy 5* review.

Probably ok for younger people with good eyesight and hearing but we struggled to see the food and hear each other speak. I did ask if any additional lighting (even an extra candle ) was available but the waitress said a flat no. Lots of young hipsters around who looked like they were staying at Soho house. A bit more style than substance and can never recommend anywhere where the eating of the food however tasty feels like a chore (like eating steak with a broken arm in plaster).

Come to Brighton a couple of times a year, have made plateau a tradition. Always manages to fit us in, great cocktails, wine and steak tartare every time!

I booked an early supper on Saturday night as I had my longest standing friends over from Portugal (as I was celebrating a very big birthday). Unfortunately (I am hearing impaired & use hearing aids), the music was SO LOUD that you had to shout to make yourself heard ( even the waitress had trouble when explaining the menu!). I did explain my impairment and asked if the music could be turned down a little, i.e., just to be able to have a normal conversation? Apparently not??? As we were offered a table upstairs where it was (allegedly) quieter, which it was, though we were seated right under a speaker. I can only say that I was mortally embarrassed (as my friends find lovely places to take me in Portugal). I have been to Plateau for many a year ( but only at lunch), but previously, it was a " French-style subtle venue playing Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel etc ". Despite the fact that we could not converse, my friends loved the food & we had a very acceptable Cotes du Rhone. I'm not sure that I'll be rushing back, though.

Nice vibe. The tall barman (Pal?) really knew his stuff. We loved the “Yesterday’s Bread” dessert- it was a lovely twist from the usual but all the food was good.

Outstanding. Such a hidden gem. Delightful staff, delicious small plates (Sqaush with sage, beetroot, porchetta) and intimate restaurant. Highly recommended, and looking forward to returning.

Great selection of wines and seasonal small plates with a cosy atmosphere

A little disappointing as limited choice of food and generally overpriced (however, accept it was a quiet, wet and windy January night). The menu didn't grab me (others might like it), had difficulty in choosing some small dishes, but what came was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. Had cheese plate to finish, tasty but £12 for 3 small portions of cheese. Only 2 choices of sweets. Service was very good, very attentive. Red wine very good. 12.5% service charge added automatically. Sorry, but won't be returning.

Very nice place with a large choice of cocktails and a nice menu. Cozy atmosphere and a warm welcome. I highly recommend.

This is my second review of plateau 8 years on from the last. It's not our second visit though we always go to plateau when I'm Brighton 6 or so times a year. It's so laid back whilst keeping standards very high. Exceptional food, wonderful wine and marvellous, knowledgeable, engaging staff. I didn't hug the waitress this time ( I asked first the last time) but I could have. Lunch here is exceptional. Evolve yes, but don't change. Thank you

Very atmospheric with lovely food and drink options - extensive wine, cocktails & spirits with a selection af specialty beers. Food looked awesome and our neighbours were delighted with their meals! Not amazing for plant-based (us) and that is the missing star from my perspective. Highly recommended!

Amazing dining experience. Relaxed atmosphere, exceptional service and incredible food. We loved that all was locally sourced, some grown by farmers right outside of town. Unique produce grown using biodynamic farming methods. Sourced organic wines and sustainable proteins. Everything was fresh and flavorful, with unique taste combinations. Absolutely Delicious! Attentive and well informed server. Patient with our 6 year old. Exceptional dining experience.

A beautiful spot, service was a little surly and for a place with many dip-style dishes it wasn't great to run out of bread. But a lovely spot for a date, although it was quite expensive for what it was.

Nice atmosphere, but there is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to service and specially food. Well overpriced for what it is. I also ordered a glass of red wine (Picnic 2022) that I couldn’t finished. I’d say it’s been opened for ages and wasn’t kept properly. They didn’t even bothered to ask why my glass was full when we left. On top of everything, you get a “discretionary” service charge of 12%. Won’t be coming back that’s for sure.

I can’t believe it’s taken us seven years-having had a beautiful cocktail here-to come back to Plateau. This really is a fabulous place, full of gorgeous attentive staff & an amazing menu…small plates of locally sourced heavenly food. Everything was wonderfully presented & tasted absolutely glorious. The atmosphere was buzzy & warm & the music being played was spot on. We had a superb evening & can’t wait to return!

Despite being Brighton residents, we’d never been here before. But took a punt and it was amazing! Really cool place. Small and intimate but a great relaxed vibe. I tend to be critical of restaurants but couldn’t fault this place in terms of food, drink and service. Everything was balanced and lovely, even the loos were cool,lol. Out waiter, Georgia, was completely fabulous. Professional, informative, efficient and genuine. Highly recommend.

Fab attentive service and choice of wine . Had some amazing small plates inc mussels with nduja & cannelloni beans with kale & duck terrine . Fantastic veggie choices of fritters , amazing beetroot & butternut squash orzo . We are not local but would definitely come again!!!

Chose to eat here with my husband on a Saturday evening after reading reviews on Tripadvisor and we went in with high expectations. The menu sounded very interesting and the place seemed very buzzy. We were seated upstairs and our orders taken quickly, which was good. Whilst we were way for our drinks though we noticed that, as some other reviewers have mentioned, the music was very loud and we were having to shout to communicate. This ended up being quite tiring by the end of the meal! When I went to toilet downstairs, I noticed that the music was just as loud (maybe even louder) downstairs. When you have a busy restaurant anyway, loud music just make the atmosphere quite stressful! The waiters were very nice and attentive, but the food was slow to come…I had a beetroot sort of dip, which was delicious, but it was nearly an hour after we sat down before I got any of my other courses. The food, when it came, was absolutely delicious - smokey, unusual flavours and reasonably priced. There was a good balance of meat, fish and vegetable options on the menu, which was good to see. If this review was solely based on the quality of the food, I’d give it 5/5. Neither of us enjoyed the wine (Riesling) and don’t end up finishing the bottle. We often order a Riesling as we enjoy it with food, but this one wasn’t pleasant at all. I understand that everyone has different tastes, but it’s the first time we have ever left any wine!! Seeing as the food was so good we would return, but only in the summer when we were not in a rush and could sit at the tables outside, away from the music!

I’m not surprised to find the low service reviews on Google having had my first negative experience at Plateau this evening. Let me start by saying this is my 5th time eating here and as always the food and wine was incredible. Our waiter was also amazing & so patient & helpful in accommodating our dietary requirements. Upon ordering our dessert right at the end of the night; the man running the bar pulled us aside to ask us to keep our “squawking down” since we were ruining other customer’s experiences. As a table of 8 women in our late 30’s who were out enjoying a birthday dinner on a Thursday evening in a restaurant with music loud enough that we needed to speak loudly to be heard; we were extremely insulted by this. I’d previously heard the reputation of this place being pompous but had never experienced it before tonight. We’ll take our “squawking” elsewhere. For a bill in excess of £500 there are far more friendly & welcoming places to eat in Brighton.

Emperors new clothes. Please order a number of small plates of overpriced food and you can have the luxury of still feeling hungry when you leave. Terribly overpriced wine and mediocre service by disinterested staff. Nice setting though.

I had to order at the bar as the waiter forgot about us, I had to pay at the bar as well as the waiter was busy but I still got charged Service fees.

Great place to pop in for small plates or a glass of wine/ cocktail. Very small venue which makes the atmosphere lovely. Bar staff are very knowledgeable about all of their wines and happily let you try anything new.

I can here with friends last night and had a great meal and cocktails. I had a Margabeeta which was an interesting take on the traditional Margarita and was delicious. We shared a selection of Tapas and there were plenty of vegetarian options. I had pan heggarty, a yasai tempura type dish and caponata. There was a great atmosphere upstairs and the room was air-conditioning which was perfect in the hot weather we have been having. The room was a bit dark and every time we asked for the lights to be turned up one of the staff kept turning them down.

If you like tapas with a twist then this is place for you, I loved the dishes recommended,wine selection was lovely. also had an arm injury and staff accommodated me moving table so other customers and staff walking through wouldn't bump into me,

Great ambiance, bare brick walls and low lighting, a buzz of animated and satisfied diners. Mainly small plates, all bursting with flavour, a great selection of wines from smaller vineyards, superb cocktails. Service was spot on too.

Restaurant in Brighton popular Lanes district, hipster post nouvelle cuisine. Service by breathless although knowledgeable young people who are having “the time of our lives”. When we visited in 2022 there were few words on the minimalist all lower case menu and just when you think you recognise something you collide with kabu, ponzu, gnudi, slipcote, bramblteye, dukkah, haggerty and hispi (charred of course). This is enough new Scrabble words for one day. You feel like you are on the verge of a discovery and this team will journey you there. Fasten your seat belts! What the French do with aplomb needs heroes in the UK and these guys fit that bill exactly. Recommended.

Really great little spot for Tapas and very friendly service

My mate introduced me to this. It's his wife's favourite place for vegetarian food. The natural wines are a revelation, the food is good, and at this time of year it's pleasant to sit out in the sunset. I'll definitely come back here.

The wine list is truly eclectic, all natural wines by which I assume they mean organic and expensive. Vivino not much help as too few ratings you're that far off the beaten track. The recommendation from the waiter was interesting but not something I'd ever order again, has a fizz to it, we all thought it tasted like Vimto. My food was nothing that blew the lights outs, sourdough starter was pleasant, salami was a little bland, vegetable tempura was probably the highlight and the pork schnitzel was coated in the most incredibly crispy panko crumb but underseasoned. Restaurant is really dark, but full and buzzing. Portions are on the small side and some of the table were still hungry after working their way through the menu. Enjoyable evening but not a do over for me.

For sunny afternoons the tables outside are a must. A lovely list of funky, natural, organic, skin contact, biodynamic wines as well as some small plates. A bit on the expensive side, but very good vibes from the staff and definitely to try.

Lovely food, although some of it was slightly underwhelming for the amount it cost. Service was ok, not very attentive though, didn’t ask if everything was ok with food or drink. In summary food was great and we would think about going again but some items were overpriced for what it was and table service could be a lot better considering it is not a cheap restaurant.

This restaurant promised much and they delivered - more or less! They had run out of olives…and the drinks menu needs much more explanation. Who knew Silly Cow was a cider?! I know we could have asked about the drinks but there would have been a huge list of questions. However, the food was amazing, the service fantastic and I would highly recommend a visit. You might just need deep pockets, as always with tapas.
