Plate in Bath and North East Somerset

A fantastic place to stay! 4 girlfriends on an overnight in Bath..it was perfect! Lovely staff, rooms,food an so many 'treats' that you don't ever get (sweets fruit fresh milk just to.mention a few!) Highly recommend ..def coming back!

The setting was lovely with vibrant colours and decoration in the restaurant. It was smart and evocative of being abroad. The menu was supposed to invite the diner towards 'tapas' but there was only a limited choices of dishes - certainly not enough to wile away several hours with friends and wine. There were three main meals but no additional sides. It was quiet when we arrived but there was no 'check-back' on our meal and the vegetables were cold on arrival. I did mention this to the manager but he was not interested, muttering he would sort it, whatever that was supposed to mean. I can recommend the desserts - the chocolate ganache was excellent.

Unfortunately, an average experience was had for a meal. We booked a set Menu for a family event. The food was very nice, but was let down by poor service and chaotic organisation. This really should not be happening, particularly with all uses within a set Menu and a set seating plan. This should be the easiest of all to do. This is not the fault of the staff it's that they have not been trained properly! If you want to charge good money, it has to come with the service to match.

We celebrated a 40th birthday meal for my husband in January , 3 couples stayed over and also had an evening meal . Dubious about the parents enjoying the small/ larger plates and having a tapas experience the manager and chef couldn’t of been more accommodating suggesting alternatives , however all the party had the tapas and really enjoyed a variety of tasty dishes . The service was impeccable and we were really looked after . Only quibble was the service charge for every round of drinks , we didn’t pay this and paid a generous tip / service charge at the end of the meal, would suggest looking at this approach for larger parties . Rather unfortunately we had a mouse around our table in the restaurant. Thankfully neither of us are particularly skittish about mice, however it was a little unnerving and questionable on the hygiene from. I’m betting that others would have made much more of a fuss than we did. As a result, I’m afraid that we won’t be returning or recommending The Bird!

I visited in September with friends (we are all in our 40’s) & am still very upset by our experience. Firstly, the food was delicious - I cannot fault the quality of the food. However, the manager Christopher Black was discriminative, bullying, rude & archaic in his behaviour. We were a party of 5 - we initially sat inside and the restaurant were accommodating to us bringing an extra person. We all had food and 2 cocktails each - all delicious & beautifully presented. We then asked to move to a table outside to share a bottle of wine - between the 5 of us. We moved outside - there were no other guests outside (to be clear). We were laughing and enjoying a much needed catch up. I, myself, am being treated for breast cancer and welcomed the chance to see my best friends. We ordered another bottle of wine - again between the 5 of us - again there were NO other guests outside. The sun was out and we were having a lovely afternoon. It was when we ordered more drinks and they didn’t come that I went inside to investigate. The bar staff told me that they had been told not to serve us because a member of staff had heard one of our party being sick in the toilets!!! We asked to speak to the manager. A. We tried to reason with Christopher that none of us were sick - we were certainly not drunk enough to be sick. B. Had he considered that despite (A) one of us might have a medical condition - bulimia, illness, or side effects from chemotherapy (I’m being treated for cancer). It was at that point he flat out stated that I should have reported my cancer upon booking!!! There was NO reasoning with this man - he is a bully and was determined to belittle us women. I am already having an emotional time and I did cry and suggest that WE call the police due to his discriminative behaviour. THE only reason our party paid the bill and left is because they didn’t want to see me anymore upset. I am still traumatised by this whole experience - it was a very sad day to what had been a lovely afternoon.

The restaurant staff are very rude and not well trained in how to communicate and treat people respectfully. I was dining with my husband while a hen party was also dining, they were laughing and having fun, but not disruptive. They were not treated very nice by staff at all who refused them service early into their gathering - this is of course the management’s prerogative but the way the women were spoken to was very demeaning and frankly disrespectful at times. To the point where my husband tried to intervene to assist the manager to handle the situation better. We really felt for the party as their day was pretty much ruined. It has definitely put me off the place.

Great space. Lovely service our waiter was friendly and knowledgable. . Interesting food. My hake was slightly over but the sauce and accompaniments were excellent and make up for it. My friend’s lamb could have been pinker but she was not asked how she wanted it and I guess medium is how most want it.

We had been given vouchers for The Plate by our children and couldn’t wait to use them. The place is delightful, the food excellent and the staff wonderful! Highly recommend and we will definitely be coming back.

Absolutely worth a visit, cannot fault anything about our experience! Restaurant is a joy to sit in, vibrant colours with interesting quirks here and there,yet still intimate and cosy. Menu is quite small but still varied and the quality of the food is superb,both in presentation and taste!! I had scallops served with chicken tea to start, I now need this in my life, it was to die for! We both went for 3 courses because you just cannot not. Staff are a credit to the hotel, service was perfect! We will definitely be going back! Thank you.

We arrived very shaken by a terrible experience at the Bath Spa hotel up the road. It was our Ruby Wedding Anniversary and I booked the hotel for a special Sunday lunch. We had wanted to visit the Bird on some occasion so we turned disaster into opportunity and managed to get a table at the Bird after a short wait. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and understanding plus the food was delicious, especially the roast potatoes which were amongst the best I have ever tasted. We also enjoyed our dessert on the terrace with extra special views. Thanks to all for rescuing our special day (and my strong advice is never set foot in the Bath Spa hotel)!

Was a beautiful setting for my sisters hen do. Perfect atmosphere for a chat and a bite to eat. The staff were so friendly and very accommodating to my requests. We had reserved a table on the outside terrace but due to poor weather they had already set us up inside at another beautiful table area when we arrived. The food was absolutely gorgeous and had a lot of compliments from the rest of the party. Highly recommend this unique and friendly place.

Amazing evening! My wife's birthday and what a treat it was. Pre-dinner drinks on the lovely terrace, overlooking the recreation ground and Bath Rugby HQ, got our evening off to a great start, with cocktail advice from the excellent Dhiraj, who then looked after us all evening. the cocktail menu is amazing in itself and delightfully served in bird themed glassware. The dinner menu is reasonably priced, making Plate an affordable option in the competitive market of this popular town that has plentiful restaurants. Compared to the menu, the wine list is a little on the pricey side. Lovely soda bread rolls got us underway while we awaited a shared heritage tomato plate, followed by the burger and a superfood salad with prawn. Both were excellent. Throughout our dinner Dhiraj was attentive without being intrusive, and capped the evening with a decorated plate of chocolate truffles completing our birthday dinner, justifying the service charge, and more. The decor and furniture of the restaurant is sympathetic to the bird theme and is very tasteful indeed. We were so impressed that we have vowed to return and stay in the The Bird rooms for a getaway break. Can't wait for that opportunity!

The menu and images looked amazing hence why we booked. However, when we arrived at 7.30 and were handed the menu, it was a limited menu with mostly vegetarian options. No a La carte menu. The staff were friendly but the food for the price was well below average. Wouldn’t come here again and wouldn’t recommend it I’m afraid.

I don’t usually leave a review but thought I should make an exception for here. The food was fantastic (5* afternoon tea) but unfortunately the facilities let this place this place down as they have no baby changing facilities. Uncle ate as I’d love to return but can’t as not suitable for my baby. What a shame.

I really wanted this to be a great experience, having booked as a treat with a family who we had visiting but, whilst there were some good things overall the experience was a disappointment. First the good stuff: the service was friendly, the environment relaxed and attractive and we appreciated the kids’ activity books with things suitable for a variety of ages. But the not-so-good list is longer: the entrance to the rear is still being (re)built to the point of being borderline dangerous with small kids. The wait for our food was too long. We’d specifically asked for bread to keep the kids satisfied whilst their meals arrived but this never showed up. Five of the six kids’ meals eventually arrived after some chasing but it was another 5-10 minutes before the poor sixth kid’s food arrived. You might imagine his confused reaction about why all his friends were eating but he wasn’t after the long wait. The food when it arrived was ok but nothing spectacular for the price (perhaps we’d been spoilt by an incredible Sunday Lunch at the Kings’ Arms in Monkton Farleigh a few weeks’ prior). Given all the publicity about the relaunch we’d really hoped for better but honestly can’t recommend Plate on this performance and given the range of other options Bath and surrounds have to offer we sadly won’t be rushing back.
