Pizza Express in York

We went to pizza express and ordered our meal. we ordered one starter of dough balls, which we then saw after it wasn’t on our online bill but we also had an extra charge on our side which we didn’t order. we called over the waitress who we told about the situation so we thought it was all fine and we would get our starter however it had been 30 mins and no sign of anything and no change to the bill so we asked someone else about the situation to which we got a snotty reply to it telling us that it had been sorted. we then never received our dough balls. we got our mains which was all cold but we couldn’t wait any more, people around was also complaining about the temperature of the food. there lack of communication about the bill issue and simply no remorse for not having the starter after asking 3 times for it.

Another superb 'post-panto' trip to Pizza Express with the family. Second year on the bounce we've had Alice looking after us and once again she delivered an outstanding service. Being a large party on a busy December Saturday night it takes someone extra special to offer such excellent service, and Alice didn't miss a beat. She was attentive to the young kids as well as us big kids and overall made for a very enjoyable and relaxed evening for us all. Thanks again Alice, we'll see you next year if not before!

Pizza seca, más como comer pan crujiente. Casi nada de salsa de tomate o queso. La ensalada era espinaca, tirada en el plato sin clasificar las hojas dañadas de las intactas. La bebida festiva era Prosecco con jarabe de granada y frambuesas - buena bebida pero sin frambuesas. ¿La camarera ni siquiera preguntó si todo estaba bien? Me sentí robado del costo de una pizza. No te molestes con esta cadena de pizzas otra vez.

Ate here after visiting York Christmas Market. Food was delicious and arrived promptly. Artur was lovely and super helpful. Great experience!

Had the most amazing experience here. Food was delightful, especially the sticky toffee pudding, but nothing compared to the best service I have ever received from Artur (sorry for spelling!!) Visited today on an extremely busy day, we booked a table as I know how busy it gets in there on a Saturday anyway (I work back of house at another pizza express) we were served by Artur he was so nice and helpful and really friendly. He helped me with my app and how to use it as i wasn't too sure how to apply discounts etc, he was very informative and went out of his way to help us. We really enjoyed our visit and Artur was taking photos for people including us which I thought was nice to take time out when it was so busy in there. The food and drinks were lovely. Thanks for a great time!

Took an hour and they forget my overpriced dip so I need my money back

En primer lugar, debo decir que nos acomodaron a los cuatro en poco tiempo debido a que el sitio de Museum Street tenía un problema de alarma de incendio que significaba que no podíamos comer allí. El personal también fue amable y acogedor. Sin embargo, la experiencia general no fue genial. Las bolas de masa para los niños apenas se habían levantado, así que sabían mal cocinadas. Pedí calamares como entrada, pero fue pesado y robusto. Como si hubieran puesto un poco de calamar en un bollo caliente para perros, lo hubieran doblado en círculo y luego lo hubieran frito. Bordeando lo no comestible. Normalmente habría enviado esto de vuelta, pero ya estábamos comiendo tarde debido a la cancelación de nuestra reserva original. El ambiente general era el de una comida para llevar. Muchos pedidos salen para entrega. El personal cortaba las pizzas para estos pedidos en una mesa llena de botellas de cerveza vacías, que seguían siendo derribadas. Por qué después del primer incidente no se deshicieron de ellos es raro. Desafortunadamente estábamos justo al lado de la zona de cocina, así que obtuvimos toda la fuerza de esta experiencia. El lugar parecía estar luchando con atender a los clientes del restaurante y mantenerse al día con las demandas de entrega. En un nivel no me habría importado, pero los precios son precios de restaurante, así que espero una experiencia de restaurante, que se quedó muy corto. La impresión general es que este sitio, tal vez no todos, se concentran en los pedidos para llevar y la calidad de la comida está cayendo para satisfacer esa demanda. Comida muy decepcionante. Se alejará de Pizza Express por un tiempo como un montón de otras pizzerías de gama alta para elegir.

Time kept changing, and on the end my drink was forgotten, which has happened multiple times when ordering from here before

AVOID AVOID AVOID! As from previous reviews food over 2 hours late and arrived cold. Asked for gluten free food but when it came no labelling so half of it will be going to waste as do not know if safe to eat.

Booking system very poor, booked online and it was cancelled within 7 minutes

Arthur is the no. 1 waiter in Yorkshire, attentive and super friendly. A lovely evening, made significantly better by the service

Food was really nice, some of the best pizza we have had in a long time. The Dough balls in blankets were amazing. But better than all that was our host Artur, he was pleasant and friendly with a good sense of humor. He made the evening a very enjoyable night.

The order was placed at 5:30 and I recieved my food 1hr 30 later after my food was scheduled to be delivered at 6:10. My food was delivered 50 minutes late and when my food arrived the food was very cold.

The food we had here is what saved our experience. Firstly I was told that the offers were better if I download and order through the app. I tried but was having some difficulty to get the app working. However when I tried asking for some support from a lady with blonde hair she greeted me like I'd inconvenienced her. She had no patience to understand what issues I was having to use the app, so when I asked can I not just make my order without the app (because I wanted to feed my flustered and hungry children) I was told no I have to use the app! As I was about to question that she left abruptly and the next thing I knew a man came over with a handheld device and took our order. All the staff were very busy, maybe they were a little understaffed. But surely if staff are encouraging us to use the app then they should support with using it too.

Apareció para un almuerzo rápido, en general buena comida y el personal mientras parecía sobrecargado de trabajo era amable. La pizza vegana y sin gluten y las bolas de masa eran encantadoras, decepcionante sin embargo que no tenían mantequilla de ajo vegana en absoluto y el menú del desierto carecía de opciones.

I was told delivery was going to be 35 minutes it ended up being over 3 hours.

Era el único servidor de turno en una noche ajetreada y nunca dejó de moverse todo el tiempo que estuvimos allí. A pesar de esto, constantemente sonreía y hacía bromas y mantenía un ambiente alegre para todos los clientes.

Pizza was cold and lacked topping was also not cut through

Had a fantastic experience with Pizza Express tonight! Arthur was an incredible host with so much energy and personality & really improved our experience. Had a slight issue with one of the dishes but he absolutely made it up for it & handled the situation amazingly! Such tasty food & fab service

We placed a delivery for 3 pizzas and some dough balls. Once our order was placed it took 2 hours to be made before our delivery driver left the restaurant and delivered it to us. The order arrived missing the dough balls, one of the pizzas was the wrong base / size and another pizza had toppings on that we didn’t ask for. The person I spoke to at the restaurant was nice, however she told us it would be a just over a half an hour wait, not the two hours that we actually waited to receive it. We would never have ordered if we had known we would be waiting that long, especially when the majority of our order arrived wrong, missing and cold. I completely understand that restaurants get busy, but two hours on a Wednesday night for 3 pizzas and a side is quite disappointing.

Ordered online. It took two hours to come, our sides were missing and the toppings on one of our pizzas was wrong. Very poor, never ordering from here again. I’d recommend ordering from somewhere else.

over two hours late still not arrived

Went with my daughter and another party of 3. Deliberately booked this as a pre theatre meal as it had sone offers one. One for free dough balls when downloading the app and another for boy one classic, get another for £1. Useless waitress serving us who wasn’t concentrating properly. Had to tell her 3 times which wine I wanted. We explained at the start we had offers from the app and we were clearly eating separately as we both had phones out and showed her the app. She didn’t explain them to us and said we needed to order first with her and then the app would take them off. Came to pay the bill and apparently we didn’t get the dough balls for free as we were trying to use the buy one get another for £1 deal. Another blow came when she said that only one pizza would be £1 as we were classed as one table, despite paying the bill separately. What was meant to be a cheap meal for 2 of us cost nearly £40! Ridiculous! Restaurant was deserted and I can see why! Will never visit PE again. A tired overpriced chain and far better Italian restaurants to go to in York!

Customer service was very good, waiter Artur was very friendly and kind. Food was lovely, however the restaurant did lack a bit of atmosphere, as it was very quiet. However didn’t take away from the food and our experience

Myself and my boyfriend came here for the first time and the service was absolutely brilliant. We were served by Arthur, and despite being about 20 minutes away from closing time he was the most hospitable and friendly server I think I have ever had. The food came quickly and he turned an already great meal into one of the best we have had in York :)

Had to lodge a formal complaint. Waited 30 minutes for a drink order to be taken, then when I complained the manager, she was aggressive. So we left. Every other Pizza Express I have used has been brilliant. Just avoid this one.

We visited for a late lunch, warmly greeted by our server and promptly shown to a table. Drinks and food were ordered swiftly and arrived at the table not long after. Food was delicious. Throughout our experience service was fantastic, server even stopped and asked if we would like a family photo! Which as a family of 5, one parent is usually behind the camera or at arms length so this was a brilliant little touch and really meant a lot!

I ordered food to collect from here, I arrived and was told they don’t have the Mac and cheese that I ordered so I thought fair enough and was told it would be 5minutes. 30minutes later I went to ask a member of staff about my food and was told “can you just wait a second” and then was ignored for a further 10minutes. After nearly an hour of waiting and being ignored I finally received my order which was stone cold. There was only one member of staff (a girl with blue hair who I recognised from the designer outlet pizza express) who was actually trying to get food out quickly and actually doing her job while another member of staff and I assume the manager were in a back room. Poor service.

Can honestly say I would Never return to this place did not get her name but her rudeness is above and beyond!!!!!

My wife and I spent 4 days in York during the 'Ebor Festival'. On each of the 4 evenings we ate at Pizza Express, St Sampson's Square, on 3 occasions just the two of us and on the other with 3 other family members. We like Pizza Express food and have come to appreciate the good value it affords when travelling around the country. We have been to many of their outlets Without doubt the service in the St Sampsons Square restaurant is the best we have ever experienced. Indeed it would be in the top three of all restaurants we have visited. Rebecca and Arthur were wonderfully attentive of our needs and both are such warm engaging people. They complement each other very well, forming a great team. Unlike the larger branch of Pizza Express in York City Centre (with pounding loud music which we were told was company policy), the music was ow and discreet which made for a very pleasant dining experience. The next time we visit the area we will definite head to this restaurant. Thank you Rebecca and Arthur for such a lovely week of dining.

Booked in for dinner and ordered a pizza and calzone, the pizza base was doughy and undercooked, the calzone was half empty, lukewarm, and worst of all had pink chicken inside. Waitress kindly offered to bring another one but I was truly put off and declined, we couldn’t leave fast enough. They offered to wipe the cost of the calzone from the bill but we had to pay for the rest. Unsure why the food wouldn’t be cooked properly as we visited when there seemed to be plenty of staff and there was only around 4/5 tables of people as other floor was closed. We Will be staying well away from this one in the future.

If you come to visit York rather than wait for your order avoid this place at all costs! Now almost one hour since we ordered and the food hasn't arrived yet. When asked about the delay the waiter said they had to do takeaway first. Shambles he didn't say that when we arrived there and the weather so beautiful.

The service staff was funny. Food and drinks came out fast. Sadly the Pizza was only average, no real flavour. Can have a meal there, but sure better Pizza around.

Food was quite cold by the time it got here but really yummy and defo recommend the lemon and white choccy roulade!

One lady picked up the phone and I asked her do you guys do delivery she's said what and I said delivery she instantly hanged up the phone if I was was her manager I would kicked her out from the job cause she's losing lots of customers. Even if she's said no we don't do delivery's I would've come to the shop and still eat there

Family-friendly space and really lovely team. We always worry about taking our coeliac child out to eat, but were made to feel very much at ease, with a great choice of dishes on the menu for her. Reasonably priced for a York restaurant too. Would definitely recommend to others for a treat-out!

Witnessed today a waitress block the door and not let a disabled fellow in a wheelchair in. Absolutely disgraceful and illegal.

Not a good exerience here, the Calzone Pizza they cooked me looked like a starter. To be fair I complained at the time and the refunded the cost of the meal. Fortunately my Wife is on a diet so she shared her pizza with me or I would have gone hungry. Pencil in image for scale.

Won’t answer the phone at all, just hang up on us 10 times. We ordered a take away and can’t eat anchovies or cows cheese so we rang to edit the order and no one answered. Customer services can’t ring through for you and the app does not allow you to customise your order unless it’s ’vegan Or gluten free’. Very disappointing. We’re loyal customers and we’re just giving up on pizza express now as it’s such a ballache place to order in or from if you can’t eat certain foods … we’ve now spent over £40 on an order we can’t eat (and can’t cancel) because their website advises contacting the branch you order from after an order is placed and not before! Cheers guys !

We ordered a gluten free pizza and a normal pizza and the gluten free pizza has hardly no cheese or sauce on it at all(wouldn’t call this a pizza) and then with the normal pizza the dough was see through. Didn’t have time to take it back as we were going to a concert. We have had issues with other pizza express’s in the past but this just topped them all. I will not use pizza express again, it’s terrible considering the price you have to pay. DO NOT USE THIS PIZZA EXPRESS AT ALL

food was delivered 2 hours late because driver was apparently difficult to assign. calamari starter burnt. garlic dip stodgy, congealed - hardly a sauce. Papa John's dip is much better. pizza reasonable but not worth the extremely long wait. restaurant claims they don't prepare food until a driver is assigned, but also wouldn't allow me to cancel my order after waiting one hr w/o paying because it was already being prepared apparently. either food sat cold then or they lied & prevented a refund.

Was such a lovely environment and the food was great, our waitress Logan was so kind and very accommodating of my allergy !

Had an absolutely delicious pizza here yesterday; bottom just crispy enough, nice fluffy edges, service attentive but not invasive. Perfect! They might not have the beautiful interior of the Lendal branch, but the staff front and back of house are superior (although in the Lendal manager's defence, he is excellent). Thank you!

I ordered my food at 17:35 and was told it would arrive within half an hour to 45 mins. The order status remained as waiting for a driver for over 90 minutes. It said the restaurant wouldnt prep mt food until a driver was found. During this time, after about an hour or more, I tried to cancel my order as I didn't know how long it would take and was too hungry. Despite it saying my order was not being prepared yet, just eat said I couldn't cancel for a refund as it was being prepared. This made me very frustrated as i didn't want to pay and not have any food. My food finally arrived about 2 hours after I ordered food.

Logan was a lovely waiter, very bubbly and always checked everything was okay!!

I’ve sampled Pizza Express in many locations but I have to say the experience at Sampson Square in York was exceptional. We were made to feel so very welcome the moment we walked in the door and service was quick and great. We will definitely return to this particular Pizza Express again and again due to this great experience. Thank you to all the staff for giving us such a great evening

Re heated pizza base delivered in about 3 minutes, undercooked ingredients, shocker!

Service was slow yet there was hardly anyone in there. Large bottle of prosecco was served unopened and we were asked to open it ourselves. They forgot one of our desserts and we had to remind the staff. The other dessert wasn't served as it was shown on the website. The cleanliness was very poor especially in the downstairs disabled access toilet.

The staff were lovely, so this comment is not about them at all, but Pizza Express as a chain. I have been to 2 different restaurants now and have to eat gluten free as I have coeliac disease. The menu says that there are 2 GF bases that can be ordered for pizza, but the classic base seems to be the the only one available. It is good there is a GF offer, but it's tiny when compared to the other bases so is rather disappointing and costs the same as a larger one. Can this be sorted out as my choices are limited as it is!

Zee was so lovely to us all night she gave us recommendations for desserts that we loved, and her service was impeccable :)

I was waiting 2 hours for food. It has status delivered after 1.15 hours waiting and still no food delivered. Never again.

We booked a family meal for 16 people travelling from all around the country and I can’t praise Alice our server more highly. From the moment we arrived she made us feel welcome and looked after us with drinks while we waited for the rest of the group. We had preordered our food and it all arrived together about 15-20 mins after we sat down - food was delicious and service was excellent

We had a great evening thanks to Arthur. Very attentive, polite and made us feel very relaxed. Great with our 3 year old daughter and went over and above to make sure we enjoyed our meal and evening. An absolute credit to this restaurant, hope he gets the recognition he deserves 👏

Ordered one pizza and dough balls, took 2.5 hrs to arrive from ordering. Food was colder than room temperature, which I thought was impressive!

Very late, never answered the phone, missed an item - DO NOT order via just eat from here. We ordered at 5pm for delivery at 6:30pm - nothing happened in the app until 7:58pm when it was assigned to a courier. We eventually got the delivery at 8:15pm. We had been trying the phone number of the restaurant constantly from 6:30pm til 7:30pm - they never answered. They did answer later when we realised we were missing an item and phoned: apparently "the phone doesn't work downstairs".

The food can cold and the pizza we could tell had been kept warm as was really tough to eat and delivery said 4:15pm originally then didn’t come until 17:30 when we order at 3pm ish

Me and my girlfriend came on the 21st of November 2023 and both agree we have never service like it . Our waiter Artur was amazing , he seated us straight away and was very accommodating. When we ordered I asked it was possible to not have the honey mustard with the dough balls and straight away he offered me other things I could have that I didn’t even see on the menu , and the same for a pizza I ordered . He even offered to take a photo of us and couldn’t possible do anything more to help . The food was also amazing can’t recommend any more . And if you have Artur your definitely in good hands .

Almost 3 hours late, stone cold! I want a complete refund

We had our table booked for 19:30, however as it was raining we asked at 19:00 if our table was free to come in and order drinks whilst we waited for the rest of our party which was accommodated. The waitress upstairs was unusual to say the least. Some of our party wanted to order starters as their main meals (we had a larger than expected afternoon tea earlier in the day) she then started shouting that she used to be a chef and wanted mains first….. something to do with the way it shows on the order tab in the kitchen…..she went around the table, missed out various members of the party and then was in such a rush nearly didn’t take any side orders or starter orders. Once we had resolved this, we moved onto drinks, she eye rolled as one lady changed her drink order. 20 mins later, despite being asked for all the food to come out together, out come the starters and nothing else. Waitress apologised and said the rest of the food would follow shortly. 20 mins later, the rest appears. She then goes on to say she fetched the missing halloumi bites, we repeatedly told her we wasn’t missing any and had only ordered 2. 5 mins later, she appeared with more halloumi and looked annoyed that no one was claiming them. She then said she would just place them on the table. I told her that was fine but we wasn’t going to pay for them. After a reminder they were removed from the bill. The food was nice overall and arrived hot and was tasty. When we had almost finished (1 person still eating) the waitress returned and started to clear the table. She also decided to sit at our table as she did this, overall we found her strange, impatient and unwelcoming, we felt like an inconvenience to her. I checked the bill on the app and a £28 tip had been added, I asked for this to be removed as we found the service to be below the standard we would expect. I recommend that the management look at getting this lady some training going forward.
