Ask Italian in York

It was lunch time and there were only 2 other people in. Having said that i really enjoyed my meal.

Had a fantastic lunch today at Ask Italian in York. Sam was our server and was both polite and friendly throughout, making sure everything was perfect during our visit. Great place for an affordable meal in a nice venue.

We had to make a reservation but we waited about 15-20 minutes and entered the restaurant but the place is narrow and crowded and not suitable for people with special needs. The food is very average compared to others.

Good food-wide menu to choose from. The kids menus are excellent with lots of choice and excellent value. Building is beautiful.

+ delicious pizza, beautiful hall and cozy New Year's decorations. - dark hall, most of the bulbs in the chandeliers did not work. The table turned out to be sticky. I had to repeat the order twice, wait a very long time, and leave without waiting for dessert.

What a location Ask have here, it's a superb building with lots of history, but that's not the best part! The food and service were first class, but I must mention the staff who were brilliant.

Staff was excellent and a very nice building but the food was very bland, my tiramissu was still frozen in the middle and the calamari was tasteless both clearly bought in and thrown in to the freezer, my pizza had so much honey on it it was overwhelming and you couldn't taste the rest of the pizza. So in all extremely overpriced for very average and bland food.

My club and I booked our Christmas meal at Ask Italian this year. There was 25 of us so it was a big meal, we pre-ordered off of the Christmas menu they sent us. When we arrived we waited for 10 minutes and we were then taken to a room with 5 tables. We had asked for a table together but we made do. Our starters came and they were fine, for our main course a waiter came up to me and another girl that had ordered the same main and said “we don’t have the meal you want so I’ve brought you a pizza”. We hadn’t been notified that the meal wasn’t being served and the other girl had dietary requirements so she couldn’t have the pizza. I was quite shocked that I wasn’t going to be getting the meal I had already payed for and couldn’t believe he just brought over a pizza without asking what I wanted. He was very short and angry when I told him I didn’t want the pizza and that the other girl couldn’t have the pizza either. He grumpily walked away and brought over the menu and I ordered something else. Next to me my friend had ordered a side but after 20 minutes of waiting it still hadn’t come so he notified the same waiter. The waiter accused him of having already eaten the side and asked him if it had perhaps come on top of his main (which was a pizza, he ordered pigs in blankets as a side) which it obviously hadn’t. The waiter then showed us a printed out version of our meal spreadsheet, which didn’t have the pigs in blanket on as a side because in order to view the sides you had to use a computer or access the website online. Luckily we had the spreadsheet on our phone and showed him that it was ordered, though the waiter kept trying to argue with us! When the meal ended we asked another waitress if she could take a quick photo of us, she said no but then her manager came up and told her to help us out, she sighed the entire time and was just generally so rude to us all. We did complain at the end to the manager who was very accommodating and apologetic. We also had a lovely waitress with long blonde locs though we didn’t catch her name. Overall the service was rather poor, hardly any of the workers we helpful or accommodating and it ruined that part of our night.

Had a lively 3 course Christmas meal, well worth the money. Staff really friendly x

Friendly service but the Christmas pizza was bland and I had to leave before my dessert finally arrived. No ambience in this cavern, won't be going back.

Lovely meal here while visiting York for the day. 2nd time we have been and would go again. Stunning building, the restaurant is set in the Assembly Hall.

What you expect from the chain but amazing venue and lovely team

We asked for both main courses to be sent back to the kitchen. The lasagne was burned at the edges and the lentil Ragu arrived on a cold plate and was lukewarm. We had been surprised that the food had arrived within 10 minutes and this explained why! Obviously pre prepared and just reheated. Disappointing and won't be returning.

This was my 1st time in Ask and we will 100% be coming back,I honestly have no faults the food was out of this world and cooked perfectly,The lady who waited our table was so polite (sorry I didn’t catch your name)was smiley and so polite even thou they were super busy ,Thank you so much for a very enjoyable evening ❤️❤️ I would add pictures but it didn’t last long on my plate 😂

Whenever we go to York Ask is the place we enjoy. On this occasion we had a wonderful meal and the service was very good. We tend to have a number of dishes and make our own Italian/English assortment.

Good points, absolutely everything!! Building was beautiful, restaurant set out well so although busy it didn't feel it. Staff were friendly, polite and happy to help. Food was amazing!! Bad point, my tummy was to small to fit 3 courses in!! And I waddled back to my hotel with jeans unbuttoned haha 😄

Amazing venue in the centre of York in the former Assembly Rooms. Staff were very helpful and the food was high quality.

Food wasn't the best bit not awful.. very overdone prawn starter, and my truffled potatoes were old very dry new potatoes with not much sauce and tasteless no truffle flavour. My daughter, however, had the bolognese, and she thought it was fantastic. Servers were lovely and couldn't fault them. And the place itself was beautiful inside... the women toilets stank to high heaven, and unfortunately, we had wafts of it from our table by it.

This restaurant is amazing! A beautiful setting, lovely food & very attentive & friendly staff. A big shout out to Emily who is a fabulous server, always accommodates our needs & looks after us so very well. Would thoroughly recommend!

Really plesant front of house staff, however let down by the food... the toilets STINK and we coukd smell it from the table we were sat at. The prawn starter was very overdone, and the truffled potato's were old new potatoes with not much sauce. Daughter had the fetucini bolognese which she really enjoyed ... lovely setting..

What a sumptuous place and lovely lovely staff. So nice I said it twice. Our greeter was friendly helpful and fun. I found her again when our server didn't come to us after 10 minutes. But service after that was fab which is why I paid the optional service charge which I never ever ever do normally. Cocktails which you can get free if you sign up were gorgeous and we were well looked after. I didn't ca5ch everyone's name but Emily our super Allergy server was efficient friendly and sweet. I told her so too.

Apparently you can’t order PLAIN PASTA for a toddler in ask ITALIAN. also we turned up slightly early and couldn’t go in for a drink before even though there was 20 free tables. My mums pasta came and it was as dry as a bone. Can’t fault the staff they were great. Not their fault. Just a few ridiculous moments

I had a frustrating experience while picking up an order from this restaurant as a Deliveroo rider. The staff member, a larger man with tattoos, displayed anger issues and was unprofessional in his communication. I understand that it can be busy, but it's important for restaurant staff to treat delivery riders and customers with respect. I hope management addresses this to improve the experience for everyone involved."

An impressive building full of grandeur but not sure it has the right atmosphere for a romantic diner for two. We booked a table 18:45 on Saturday night but it was not necessary. Service was prompt and no issues but it all felt like a production line process. Food nice enough but not anything special.

Wonderful setting, very large area to cover. Pizza very tasty, pasta a little bland. Service was rushed and we felt like we were being watched as if they needed the table back. The server tried taking my coffee off the table and my daughter's tea when we hadn't finished. We opted for a mini desert and hot drink. To be honest I don't know how they. were not embarrassed to serve the wafer thin slice of tiramisu to us. I mentioned to the server and he said it was his first day. Overall was ok

Beautiful building, however the food wasn’t what we are used to when we go to an ASK Italian. We have visited other Ask Italian restaurants before and we always found the food tasty. This time, 2 of us ordered the King prawns tagliatelle and it was so spicy it was impossible to enjoy it. In my opinion, if it is supposed to be this spicy, it should be clearly mentioned in the menu. The staff were welcoming and very friendly. However, we didn’t receive a bill. Instead, the waiter stood by the table, holding a screen the size of a smart phone showing our bill for us to confirm, which saves paper, I understand, but doesn’t really give the customer a chance to review their spending with piece of mind. We paid in cash and we weren’t given any change or a receipt nor were we asked if we wanted any of these. Not very impressed this time.

A very enjoyable family meal out here whilst on holiday in York. The waiting staff were all polite, helpful and friendly. The decor and design of the restaurant is stunning. The food was all delicious and arrived quickly. Our children particularly enjoyed their three course meal from the kids menu.

I didn't understand what this chain has to do with Italian cuisine... everything is done (adopted) in the English style, such as the food, but also the way of serving the dishes. Then putting some kind of fast food restaurant in a historic environment... there's no logic.

Food was nowhere near as good as I was expecting. The room was cold, found it to be uncomfortable. My dad's order was incorrect and had to be sent back, my brother in law had to question the bill 3 times. Does not show a good restaurant.

Italian chain, good food, and this branch is in a beautiful location, in an old assembly rooms. Pizza was tasty, but the chips on the side were delicious - thick, crispy, fluffy inside, with a brilliantly garlicky aioli dip.

Our server Alicia was super helpful and kind she really made our experience special, hope to see her next time as she went above and beyond for us.

Gorgeous food but felt quite rushed by staff to order and then pay bill

Great atmosphere. Huge, columned eating areas. They were short staffed due to illness but they raced around as best they could but it did take a long time to get served. In one sense it wasn't the best service but in another sense, the staff deserved the biggest tip of our stay in York for the effort they put in. Never really impressed with Italian food and it was much like any Italian I've eaten.

I placed an ubereats order for the goats cheese and Spinach calzone, amongst other things. I am a lifelong vegetarian so was disgusted when I tried the calzone and saw it contained pepperoni. The store did apologise but informed me that there are no local protocols to ensure this doesn't happen to other people

Me and my partner have a meal here for every anniversary, a bit of a tradition. That’s all down to the staff, atmosphere and the great food! Not to mention the building is gorgeous!

Great restaurant - beautiful building!

Food was lovely and quick but never saw the same server twice and they forgot to bring our starters out. We were never offered more drinks. The staff we saw were all lovely polite and apologetic but unfortunately they just seemed to have a very busy shift.

We celebrated our wedding reception in the private dining room. Our server was great and extremely accommodating. The managers at ASK made organising our event so straightforward from remaining us with the set menu months before it's official release, providing a spreadsheet for pre orders and allowing us to attend the venue a couple of times to plan the room and set up the place settings the night before. Everyone enjoyed their selections from the set menu which had a great selection of starters mainsa and deserts to choose from. A couple of our guests had special dietary requirements and so they were also looked after very well. The whole day went smoothly which could not have been possible without Asks efforts. Thanks to the team for making it a special and memorable wedding reception. I would recommend this restaurant and private dining venue (which is breathtakingly beautiful) for your wedding or other family function.

The restaurant is set in an older building, so it makes for an interesting, but delightful, atmosphere. The food was amazing as always, I had the mushroom & truffle calzone and my partner had the manzo piccante. We shared a brownie for pudding.

Amazing atmosphere with columns, chandeliers suspended from a towering ceiling. Very ornate. Excellent service. My dining companions enjoyed their dinner but I subtracted one star for my dry and chewy pollo Marsala.

The wow factor that you get from the Assembly Rooms setting makes a visit to ASK at York a little more special. Food was good, with some great choices. Servers were a even busier than usual, they seem increasingly stretched and stressed with each visit. Managers are great at firefighting and probably should be paid more.

I love this place for its unique Georgian building and decor, they even had Bridgerton soundtrack music in the background! Our three month old grandson spent the evening gazing in wonder at the chandeliers while the rest of us tucked into delicious food served by friendly staff. A lovely evening thank you.

Just been here for mine and my partners anniversary. Anna was absolutely incredible! She was so attentive, fun, friendly and helpful. I can't thank her enough for an amazing evening. The food and the atmosphere was incredible too! Can't recommend enough!

We were greeted by a polite and helpful staff member who was very attentive during our stay at the restaurant. The food was excellent and came very quickly. We started with 'proper' olives (no brine). I had the Burratta and Pancetta Carbonara. It was delicious. My wife had the sea bass. She loved it. Even the side salad was well presented. I'd been told that the food was of a high standard by someone who is a chef. He should know. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and highly recommend it.

For a start, the restaurant is in a lovely, historic setting. From the moment we were greeted at the entrance, the staff were friendly, helpful and the service was excellent. The food was delicious, high quality, hot throughout and the experience great value.

Four of us had a lovely meal in this fabulous building on a Saturday night. We were all delighted with our meals - pizza, pasta and chicken milanese were all delicious. Drinks were good too. Such a lovely spot for dinner and the staff were friendly and helpful too.
