Ask Italian in York

Any time I come to York I always come to this ask Italian because even for a chain restaurant it is always a good experience. Absolutely love the food and the decor is incredible. I have no complaints about anything from the food to the service 5/5 stars.

Our server, Lumi, was great, very efficient and friendly. Couldn't have done more to improve our experience. The Grand Assembly Rooms in York are a lovely venue.

This restaurant is set within the most beautiful building. It was busy but guests aren’t crammed in. The food was amazing and fresh tasting. By far the best part of this meal was the service. Anna, our server was fantastic. Her sales skills were amazing, recommending dishes and drinks without being pushy. She was friendly and funny and as her badge says she was amazing.

Sorry for the delay leaving the review, we were there Friday 28th Feb at approx. 6pm, did not have a booking but got fitted in anyway at the tables near the front.

Food was okay at best. King prawn started was frazzled and dry. Carbonara was tasteless.

We come here often - food is great and decently priced, the building is beautiful and the staff are always lovely. We will be coming back but I felt obliged to leave a review about how poorly staffed the restaurant is pretty much every time we come. We were there last night (Saturday) and there were only a handful of waiting staff when the restaurant was completely full. They’re clearly rushed off their feet and doing their best under high pressures. It’s a shame Ask treat their staff so poorly, it’s a regular occurrence and I doubt it would be that hard to find an appropriate amount of waiting staff. Seems they are trying to make cost savings at the expense of their employees wellbeing.

The interior is beautiful! I love the marble floors. :) We came here just for an afternoon snack

The service received by Lumi was exceptional! We were a large booking but she made each of us feel welcome! The food was really good and came out all together! I was very impressed, especially with being such a large booking The atmosphere was very relaxed and didn’t feel rush at all. Great service and delicious food!

Great food and amazing service - Anna particulary was fabulous!

Dined with 4 adults and 3 children. 1 of the party has dairy and soya allergies. All staff were very attentive of that and ensured they were catered for, providing alternative menu and bringing out their food with stickers on the plate so easily identified. Food was lovely and reasonably priced. Took a little while to get someone's attention to pay the bill but we weren't rushed at all which was nice. Children were very happy with their meals and kids eat for £1 over half term was great.

Very average food...think a step down from wetherspoons regarding food quality. Service very quick though but would have rather waited longer for decent food. Won't be returning...

Beautiful building and restaurant area. Really good, friendly service. Was quite disappointed with our pizza though - so stingy with the cheese! Not like the online advert! We ordered 2 margarita pizza's. We paid extra to upgrade to the prime base, which was nice, but let down by the fact that the cheese barely covered the surface (see picture) and the chips were tastey but a very small portion for £4.50. There were alot of families here with young children. I think they have coloring in sheets and crayons etc for kids - so seems to be quite a child friendly location. Overall, food was disappointing and expensive for what it was. Wouldn't return here again.

We read several reviews of this ASK on the train up to York, and were thoroughly amused. This fact isn't particularly relevant, but the reviews encouraged us to visit. The vibes were immaculate, we did go in the wrong entrance, but we had so much fun wandering around before getting seen to a table. The decor was incredible and truly blew our socks off. The food was pretty good too. The staff quick, attentive and friendly.

From the minute we walked in until the moment we left we felt welcome, looked after and special. Our experience here was just wonderful and the food was absolutely delicious. Thank you to everyone, most especially our server Monica.

We came for a Valentines dinner and, despite the good food, the experience was ruined by the service. Our food took a painfully long time to arrive, which you can accept to some extent given the night it was, but the real kick in the face was the table next to us (who arrived later than us) being served at the same time yet receiving endless apologies for their wait, their meal completely free, and they were even offered free extra dishes, right in front of our faces. We were completely ignored for the rest of the night too, and had to wait half an hour before we could even get someone's attention to pay our bill. Definitely not an experience you'd expect at any half decent restaurant and I don't think we'll be returning

Experiencia decepcionante. Mi pareja y yo visitamos para el día de San Valentín y elegimos el menú establecido. Pregunté si la carbonara de burrata y panceta se podía hacer sin la carne (así que solo la pasta, salsa, tomates y burrata) y me dijeron que sí. Llegó todavía con la carne y sin burrata, lo que fue una pena después de esperar 30 + minutos para que llegara nuestra red. Nuestro camarero hizo un comentario grosero sobre nosotros solo dejando un par de libras como propina, pero literalmente no tuvimos el mismo servidor durante toda nuestra comida. La factura también era incorrecta porque no se agregó el descuento del menú establecido. Esto significa que nos cobraron de más por casi £ 15. Afortunadamente, me di cuenta de esto antes de irme, pedí un recibo y recibí un reembolso de este dinero. Toda la experiencia fue solo una pena ya que generalmente nos encanta venir aquí.

Horrible service food didn’t come for over an hour and the staff did nothing about the drinks where wrong we got paid extra and the desert came first in stupid.

Breathtaking, spectacular Italian food. The inside of this restaurant is picturesque, looks like it’s straight out of a Hollywood movie. The wait time can sometimes be a bit long, but nothing major. Overall recommend.

If you like buildings and architecture you'll love this place. Built in the classical style and a truly fantastic place to have something to eat. The food wasn't bad either. It's just that the service was a bit slow, and the room was a bit on the chilly side.

We were staying for the weekend in York and saw there was an Ask Italian, as our local one is no longer open sadly. I had booked and was glad I did as it was very busy, which was lovely to see. When we came out, there were at least 15 people waiting to go in. We were served by Theo, who was absolutely lovely, very chatty and attentive. I am a fussy eater and asked for just the sea bass and chips. It came with all the trimmings, even though I saw that Theo had put what I asked for. Luckily my Husband ate that, or it would have just been wasted. When we ordered dessert, we asked for green tea to come after the dessert. It came virtually straight away, and it was a peppermint tea. Theo straight away rectified this. He said that he had only started the day before, but he was non-stop all the time we there. No doubt sorting out problems occurring from others not reading what he had put for peoples preferences. My dessert came, but I had no spoon, again sorted by Theo! Even though he has just started, he is an asset to your company and was seen to be a very hard worker. Apart from the problems, the place was lovely inside and the food was lovely.

We ate at the York restaurant prior to attending the theatre. We received a very warm welcome and excellent service from Anna who returned to our table a couple of times during our meal to check that everything was in order. The food was delicious and even though we ate quite early (5.30pm) there were plenty of other people in the restaurant making for a good atmosphere. The complimentary Prosecco on the ASK perk was a nice touch.

Nice Italian in historic surroundings. Staff very helpful but a bit disappointed to find that while it is possible to have a gluten free pizza, there is no gluten free garlic bread available.

Every time (I’m forced) I go to an Ask, I prepare for the worst and still end up disappointed. This time was no exception. J had the smallest canzoni with a horrible sauce. Ordered lemon meringue for dessert. I don’t know what I actually received, but it wasn’t as expected. Who actually doesn’t cook meringue??? The service had been good until I saw the waiter flicking food off the table next to us went he was setting it. So he didn’t wipe it. And the food was landed on my coat.

I don't know how you can serve a dish dry and soggy at the same time but Ask managed it. The chicken had the texture of a scrubbing pad and the mushroom and white wine sauce was watery. It all felt like a tesco ready meal cooked without preheating the oven and microwaved at the same time. This meal was a parody. It was like the examples at the beginning of an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. To say the staff were under pressure is an understatement. My dish was forgotten and served ten minutes later than the group I was with. There was no follow up asking for drinks after taking the food order or after serving the food. I sat at table 47 and could watch the kitchen being an absolute chaotic shambles. Communication between the servers and kitchen seemed to be non existent. I get it was busy. I get hospitality is struggling right now. But this was a shambles. This was unacceptable. This was not worth the money.
