Ask Italian in York

Disappointing experience. My partner and I visited for Valentine’s Day and chose the set menu. I asked if the burrata & pancetta carbonara could be made without the meat (so just the pasta, sauce, tomatoes, and burrata) and was told yes. It arrived still with the meat and no burrata which was a shame after waiting 30 + minutes for our mains to arrive. Our waiter made a rude comment about us only leaving a couple of pounds as a tip but we literally didn’t have the same server throughout our meal. The bill was also incorrect because the set menu discount wasn’t added. This meant that we were overcharged by almost £15. Luckily, I realised this before leaving, asked for a receipt, and got a refund of this money. The entire experience was just a shame since we usually love coming here.

Horrible service food didn’t come for over an hour and the staff did nothing about the drinks where wrong we got paid extra and the desert came first in stupid.

Breathtaking, spectacular Italian food. The inside of this restaurant is picturesque, looks like it’s straight out of a Hollywood movie. The wait time can sometimes be a bit long, but nothing major. Overall recommend.

If you like buildings and architecture you'll love this place. Built in the classical style and a truly fantastic place to have something to eat. The food wasn't bad either. It's just that the service was a bit slow, and the room was a bit on the chilly side.

Fantastic food and even service

We were staying for the weekend in York and saw there was an Ask Italian, as our local one is no longer open sadly. I had booked and was glad I did as it was very busy, which was lovely to see. When we came out, there were at least 15 people waiting to go in. We were served by Theo, who was absolutely lovely, very chatty and attentive. I am a fussy eater and asked for just the sea bass and chips. It came with all the trimmings, even though I saw that Theo had put what I asked for. Luckily my Husband ate that, or it would have just been wasted. When we ordered dessert, we asked for green tea to come after the dessert. It came virtually straight away, and it was a peppermint tea. Theo straight away rectified this. He said that he had only started the day before, but he was non-stop all the time we there. No doubt sorting out problems occurring from others not reading what he had put for peoples preferences. My dessert came, but I had no spoon, again sorted by Theo! Even though he has just started, he is an asset to your company and was seen to be a very hard worker. Apart from the problems, the place was lovely inside and the food was lovely.

We ate at the York restaurant prior to attending the theatre. We received a very warm welcome and excellent service from Anna who returned to our table a couple of times during our meal to check that everything was in order. The food was delicious and even though we ate quite early (5.30pm) there were plenty of other people in the restaurant making for a good atmosphere. The complimentary Prosecco on the ASK perk was a nice touch.

Nice Italian in historic surroundings. Staff very helpful but a bit disappointed to find that while it is possible to have a gluten free pizza, there is no gluten free garlic bread available.

Our waiter Sam was amazing! He was patient and efficient and had a great tableside manner.

Every time (I’m forced) I go to an Ask, I prepare for the worst and still end up disappointed. This time was no exception. J had the smallest canzoni with a horrible sauce. Ordered lemon meringue for dessert. I don’t know what I actually received, but it wasn’t as expected. Who actually doesn’t cook meringue??? The service had been good until I saw the waiter flicking food off the table next to us went he was setting it. So he didn’t wipe it. And the food was landed on my coat.

I don't know how you can serve a dish dry and soggy at the same time but Ask managed it. The chicken had the texture of a scrubbing pad and the mushroom and white wine sauce was watery. It all felt like a tesco ready meal cooked without preheating the oven and microwaved at the same time. This meal was a parody. It was like the examples at the beginning of an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. To say the staff were under pressure is an understatement. My dish was forgotten and served ten minutes later than the group I was with. There was no follow up asking for drinks after taking the food order or after serving the food. I sat at table 47 and could watch the kitchen being an absolute chaotic shambles. Communication between the servers and kitchen seemed to be non existent. I get it was busy. I get hospitality is struggling right now. But this was a shambles. This was unacceptable. This was not worth the money.

Delicious food, a gorgeous and our incredible server Emily made the experience even better. We have a few allergies so are always a bit sceptical when eating out, but Emily handled everything perfectly.

Lumi was fantastic. The chips were cold, so she instantly brought some hot ones. The four stars are because the pizzas weren't really hot enough.

The food was good (pizza better than pasta imo, and great starters) and the staff have lots of patience for awkward children. Great experience as always.

My wife and I have been customers of Ask Italian for 2 decades, mainly the Castleford Junction 32 branch but also the premises on Blake Street, York. We visited the latter for lunch last week. We started with the rosemary and olive oil bread, which was fine. However when I started my linguine carbonara, the meal was not hot, the “sauce” was thin and watery and every third or fourth mouthful had a very mild soapy taste - almost as though the dishwasher hadn’t rinsed something adequately. It’s not as though they were busy or rushed. There were only 4 tables occupied at the time we were there. Ask food is generally enjoyable but this without doubt was the poorest meal I’d ever had with them. The only reasons I didn’t complain was that it was a “one main and one for a pound” deal and my wife’s was OK. But I’m now reluctant to go back.

The staff are amazing, nothing was too much trouble and the food was delicious. We will be back

What an oasis in the centre of York. My friend was stunned at the interior decor. The service was attentive without being intrusive. Food was lovely. Anna de generous, was particularly wonderful. Full of life and a tech wizard.

It was lunch time and there were only 2 other people in. Having said that i really enjoyed my meal.

Had a fantastic lunch today at Ask Italian in York. Sam was our server and was both polite and friendly throughout, making sure everything was perfect during our visit. Great place for an affordable meal in a nice venue.

Average food with lukewarm service. We arrived with our young son who requires a highchair after booking online earlier in the day. We asked for a table in the quieter section of the restaurant, although were denied it, ok, we were then given a table in the middle of the restaurant which had no space for a highchair other than in a main walkway. We moved ourselves to a suitable table in the end. Our waiter, a young ish guy, who also showed us to our table took our order in around 5 seconds, mumbling and rushing before shouting out free breadsticks and then leaving the table, leaving us both baffled. When the food arrived it was put down in the same abrupt manner and left. Our child’s food order was wrong, unsurprisingly, although the breadsticks arrived! The food it’s self was OK. Average, although fine when dining with a child early on in the evening. Upon paying the bill, the same guy came to our table and tapped out the cost on the card machine then said directly to my husband “do you want to leave a tip” when my husband had the card machine in his hand. How embarrassing. We could have said at this point how we felt but it really wasn’t worth the embarrassment to us. Will never return. It’s a shame as the building it’s self could have a nice ambiance if managed differently.

We had to make a reservation but we waited about 15-20 minutes and entered the restaurant but the place is narrow and crowded and not suitable for people with special needs. The food is very average compared to others.

Good food-wide menu to choose from. The kids menus are excellent with lots of choice and excellent value. Building is beautiful.

+ delicious pizza, beautiful hall and cozy New Year's decorations. - dark hall, most of the bulbs in the chandeliers did not work. The table turned out to be sticky. I had to repeat the order twice, wait a very long time, and leave without waiting for dessert.

Excellent meal at Ask, quality of food was excellent, atmosphere great, and fab service from the team.

What a location Ask have here, it's a superb building with lots of history, but that's not the best part! The food and service were first class, but I must mention the staff who were brilliant.

Staff was excellent and a very nice building but the food was very bland, my tiramissu was still frozen in the middle and the calamari was tasteless both clearly bought in and thrown in to the freezer, my pizza had so much honey on it it was overwhelming and you couldn't taste the rest of the pizza. So in all extremely overpriced for very average and bland food.

My club and I booked our Christmas meal at Ask Italian this year. There was 25 of us so it was a big meal, we pre-ordered off of the Christmas menu they sent us. When we arrived we waited for 10 minutes and we were then taken to a room with 5 tables. We had asked for a table together but we made do. Our starters came and they were fine, for our main course a waiter came up to me and another girl that had ordered the same main and said “we don’t have the meal you want so I’ve brought you a pizza”. We hadn’t been notified that the meal wasn’t being served and the other girl had dietary requirements so she couldn’t have the pizza. I was quite shocked that I wasn’t going to be getting the meal I had already payed for and couldn’t believe he just brought over a pizza without asking what I wanted. He was very short and angry when I told him I didn’t want the pizza and that the other girl couldn’t have the pizza either. He grumpily walked away and brought over the menu and I ordered something else. Next to me my friend had ordered a side but after 20 minutes of waiting it still hadn’t come so he notified the same waiter. The waiter accused him of having already eaten the side and asked him if it had perhaps come on top of his main (which was a pizza, he ordered pigs in blankets as a side) which it obviously hadn’t. The waiter then showed us a printed out version of our meal spreadsheet, which didn’t have the pigs in blanket on as a side because in order to view the sides you had to use a computer or access the website online. Luckily we had the spreadsheet on our phone and showed him that it was ordered, though the waiter kept trying to argue with us! When the meal ended we asked another waitress if she could take a quick photo of us, she said no but then her manager came up and told her to help us out, she sighed the entire time and was just generally so rude to us all. We did complain at the end to the manager who was very accommodating and apologetic. We also had a lovely waitress with long blonde locs though we didn’t catch her name. Overall the service was rather poor, hardly any of the workers we helpful or accommodating and it ruined that part of our night.
