Pizza Express in York

Staff rude, we were looking at the drinks menu for all of 5mins when a waiters asked if we could make tell him what we wanted, as he was very busy!!! Felt rushed and slightly uncomfortable. My lasagne was burnt around the edges and the chip were just awful! I don't know what they were cooked in but OMG tasted disgusting. 3 of us £83 we had 3 mains and a bottle of wine! Horrible experience will never go again!!!

Unfortunately had a poor experience here - me and my friend came for the wear a striped top deal to get a free pizza - walked in and were immediately walking into a children’s birthday party with children running round and hitting people with balloons - no issue of course i understand they are just kids and there to have fun, but to avoid getting in their way we tried to step into the main restaurant and get someone’s attention as we had been waiting for quite a few minutes at that time - a waiter rudely told us to go wait back at the entrance and wait, which we did and were soon seated. The same waiter served us and we felt very uncomfortable and intimidated around him - he seemed annoyed at us for not ordering anything other than drinks, annoyed at us for making cheery conversation about how quick the pizza came! I asked to take half my pizza to go as i couldn’t finish it all sat in one sitting and again he seemed annoyed at me. then when we left i asked if it was a possibility to keep my note as i scrapbook these kind of things and he spoke to me in an incredibly condescending way and said no those aren’t for you. Unfortunately this waiter ruined my experience it was clear he was having a bad day and had reflected it onto us, i will likely never be returning - i spent each interaction hoping it wouldn’t be him who spoke to us, as every other worker seemed pleasant enough.

Was our best visit to this Pizza Express, and first time I actually went to one and didn't have a pizza!!!! The chicken parmigiana is recommended, as well as the dough balls.

Food was amazing and served to us quickly and we was lucky to have a waiter with amazing customer service called Huseyin, amazing food and service and I will be visiting again

Lovely building and busy, but got seated within 5 minutes. I had the quattro carni and very filling for a thin based pizza. Few kids parties in, but it's a dental and that's to be expected.

We were there for a company meal from the theatre and it was great, the waiting staff were particularly friendly. And the food was,, well it's a pizza can't really go wrong.. nice experience in general.

Family tradition of pizza express on birthdays- and this is a favourite. Service is always excellent (though on the slow side) with humour and expertise, and the quality is consistently good. Caprese salad as a starter is popular with most; and choice of pizzas the same, with something for everyone. The Christmas 'pomegranate sparkle' has been a new highlight!

Amazing meal, the pizzas were delicious and even though it was super busy our server Huseyin was so so attentive and friendly. Thank you so much for a wonderful birthday experience!!

I am thoroughly disappointed with the service from today’s visit. I came with my husband who is visiting from America and we really fancied a lovely pizza lunch before getting the train home for lunch and wanted to take advantage of the pizza and drink offer for £12. Upon arrival we were told it would be 10 mins for a table which was fine as we had just over 90 minutes. We were finally seated after around 15-20 mins and menus were handed me us. The menus or anywhere in the restaurant did not state the lunch offer to I tried to catch the waiters eye. It felt like he was actively walking past us so another member of staff pointed us out to him. He came over and I asked about the offer to which he told me it was in classic bases I had to clarify a couple of questions about toppings and he looked visibly annoyed having to answer further questions and looking around at other tables not making any eye contact when speaking to us. He then tried to walk away but conscious of time we ordered then and there. We waited for the pizza and it felt like everybody else around us was being served, it was understandably busy but eventually I had to track down another member of staff and explained that if it was much longer we would have to leave. The waiter finally arrived with the pizza and was again visibly annoyed at our presence. I wouldn’t have complained because I know it is busy but he said in a very patronising manner ‘it is a busy restaurant you know, I don’t know what you expect’. At that point I was upset and replied that 40 minutes still isn’t good enough to wait. The waiter then corrected me, told me it was 32 minutes which still isn’t great and then told me to complain online if I have an issue. I at this point asked for his name to which he ignored me and went to clean another table. So I asked again to which he said ‘look at your receipt’ and stormed off muttering ‘my f**king name’ under his breath. He came back with the bill, and completely blanked my existence following this and continued to explain to my husband that it is busy. We have had such a wonderful trip visiting York and this upsetting experience has put a dampener on it. The receipt says we were served by Ryan but I’m not sure if that is him as he refused to tell me his name. The food was hot but he no cutter etc we were also offered no black pepper or anything but I don’t think ‘Ryan’ wanted to deal with me anymore 😂

I wanted to say a big thank you to the manager and the team for hosting our large party before Christmas. Everyone was welcoming and engaging, especially Irek who patiently sorted out our bill and all the different payments with good humour. Communication about how we could help ourselves by providing menu choices and dietary requirements, in advance, was clear and thoughtful. There was no problem when numbers varied slightly the day before.

Loved the La Reine pizza plus peperoni with an expresso cocktail.

We got there on a Saturday night without a reservation, the wait was about five minutes and worth it. The pizza was delicious, the service was friendly and attentive. The restaurant was also kid friendly and reasonably priced. They made our daughter feel very welcome. Colouring activities were provided.

Fantastic experience! Took a group of 21 for a Xmas lunch. Communication was excellent and the venue catered for various allergy requests with ease. The group had a lovely time , food was hot and delicious and service was great. Big shout out to Liam who so efficient throughout from my first booking enquiry through to settling the bill on the day .

Wonderful experience for a large family meal! Atilla (our lovely waiter) worked very hard and was very attentive. We were a table of 11 and didn’t feel rushed, nor like our size was an issue. The romana pizza was delicious (as always) and the deals on the pizza express app saved us nearly 10% - superb :-) Not usually ones for a chain restaurant - but pizza express and museum street in particular is as good as they get.

Dreadful service. We pre booked knowing it would be busy but had to wait well over an hour for our main courses. We had no glasses on the table, had to ask for cutlery, had to request a pizza cutter. I spoke to Amy the Manager, the best she could offer was that they were busy. I would have thought at this time of year they would have pre planned for busy periods. I will not to be going back.

Fabulous very family friendly, went with extended family for lunch including 2 grandsons and the staff couldn’t have been better , friendly efficient smiling and such good service. Festive menu was really good value . We will be back

Our children celebrated their birthdays here (30 friends in total) .. the staff (namely Chris Harrison Tamas Amie) were so friendly, efficient, helpful, speedy .. it was a delicious meal.

Ordered from xmas set menu - breadcrumbed chicken for starter was undercooked and soggy - not crispy. The margarita pizza was just okay however not much cheese... Additionally, the floor was covered with food crumbs and seats appeared to have spilt drinks marks (I arrived to be seated at 12pm so would expect a clean area) also, as mentioned in other reviews I did find one male waiter a little rude and dismissive

Pizzas were nice but the male server we had was extremely rude and opinionated. When I have been here previously the main issue has always been the waiting time when it didn't look very busy. I always leave a tip but on this occasion i couldn't do to the server's attitude. On leaving I was especially glad i hadnt when the server was talking to a colleague and called us morons!I hope he reads the reviews from where he works and realises we heard this comment. Needless to say we won't be back!

Picked as a location for a second date, dinner date, the poor acoustics made it very difficult to hold a conversation.

Impressive building but fairy quiet. To best get discount need each person needs to do on app. 1 pizza was hot but 2nd was lukewarm.

Had an excellent meal last night as we have come to know and love but our server this evening, Rosie, was outstanding. Incredibly personable and helpful, really helped make the evening so special. Thank you so much!

Like most pizza express outlets - you know what you’re getting. Reliable, tried & tested. The service from the staff was friendly, attentive & professional. Big downside was the waiting time. Thursday night about 6:15pm & it took an hour & a half to serve 2 doughball starters & 3 pizzas.

Save your money do not go here Awful food (Pizza Express getting pizza wrong!) Waited an hour for cardboard dough burnt pizza and a calzone that looked like a findus Crispy pancake (see picture). Even with 2 pizzas sent back it still cost a fortune for barely edible food. Waste of money and an utterly unpleasant experience. Manager seemed to think it was all OK. Apparently my calzone had simply deflated as it came out the oven. No acknowledgement or poor service, long delays and multiple plates forgotten - my daughters starter and main completely missed each time and the response was 'another dough balls yeah?' No apologies throughout this awful meal.

A high stree staple, located 15 mins walk from the station in a grand historic building, Pizza Express, known for quality menu family friendly menu. Good selection of beers and wines and a limited dessert menu but with my favourite tiramisu...which did not disappoint. Dining room is very large, divided into 2 spaces.

A little hidden away within an older facade. Collect order, but had to wait too long at the front desk. No bell to ring and no staff walking past. Or none that seemed bothered. Food typical for PE.

Went in for lunch with a friend. Saw the special offer and we went for that. However, had to download an app, then fanny on for this deal to work. Pizzas arrived and was charged full price anyway. Pizza was nothing to shout about. Had just as good out of the freezer. Expensive, mediocre in posh surroundings. Don't fall for it kids! I won't be back.

We paid 19 pounds for a mediocre pizza. ....And we waited over 1 hour for it. We won't come back. We can find much better pizza in town for a fair price

Hit the restaurant at its busiest time otherwise would have been 5 stars all round, food needed another 2 mins in the oven, but not enough to criticise it too much. Service from all staff we spoke to was awesome

Very slow service. Food came out cold and 1 dish was completely wrong. Had lots of items missing off the menu due to lack of ingredients.

I was charged twice during my restaurant visit. I have called them multiple times, but either the manager is not available or no one picks up the phone. Note that both transactions included 10% tip that I paid as well. They were prompt in deducting the money, but there is no accountability on returning the excess amount. I am attaching the snapshot of my statement 7 days after this happened. Note that the statement refers to the time in India (IST). The incident happened on Sep 22, 4:08pm BST.

The food was OK but a little cold. The crispy fries weren't crispy, the pizza very thin and was ok. But the salad nicoise was very nice.

An okay experience at best. I Was shown to my table promptly and given a choice of room which was nice, it's in a beautiful old building so a nice dining atmosphere but the service was lacking. When I wanted to order my drink and appetiser the server was walking away as I was trying to tell them what I wanted and was given the wrong drink, sparking raspberry rather than the raspberry and elderflower cider I asked for. This was changed and the correct drink provided when I let them know but I then waited around 40 minutes for my pizza and during this, it was not showing on the bill on my app. It did appear on my bill just after I was told 3 more minutes till my pizza was ready which made me think they forgot to add it and rushed the kitchen to get it out. The pizza was lovely, plenty of toppings on a nice thin base with a great sauce but overall let down by the service.

Uncooked pasta, pizza with barely any cheese, rude staff ignored us when we walked in, cold food and overall just unenjoyable.

A hard one to rate as the food was lovely. However we asked for the children’s dough balls to come with the meal, they came first, child asked for pepperoni and got margarita so had to have it remade, one drink was incorrect and had to be changed. The budda bowl salads were absolutely lovely as were the dough sticks. However the biggest irk was as soon as my husband clicked no to gratuity it was like the servers attitude shifted. The children’s menu is a great idea however the idea that they have to have 3 courses detracts from the smaller portion size- it would be good if they could just have the smaller pizza size without the extras.

A beautiful place, very good service and we ate two pizzas, one large and one common, and a calamari starter. Two non-alcoholic beers and a Peroni reserve beer. I'm beautiful I'm sure we'll come back

We came for a meal when we stopped off in York last Friday. We were in a rush to get our train home so we paid by the app. HOWEVER, we never got the chance to say thank you to the incredible waiter that served us and we’re both really gutted about it. He let us know about the app and rewards and guided us through the whole thing. I really hope this feedback reaches him because he’s the main reason we’ll be back to visit the York museum road restaurant in the future!

We had a lovely dinner here last week whilst on holiday. Great food and atmosphere- couldn’t have asked for better! Service was also good and waitress was friendly and helpful.

Our fave Pizza Express….. Great atmosphere thanks to its grand building location and the scale of restaurant space. Really well located for daytime/nighttime activities. Shopping nearby, bars nearby. A popular venue offering reliably good food at fair prices and service with a smile. Riverside location, several walks nearby. York Minster, Art Gallery and Museum just a short walk away.

Unfortunately I have to leave a 1star review due to not only getting the order wrong but then when the correct order does arrive, after every one else has finished there food it's burt! The male waiter was very very rude, very abrupt and no apology from him was offered. In all honesty can't say I have ever experienced this complete lack of manners and behaviour towards paying customers. We where then left waiting at the till to pay for this absolute shambles to endure yet another serving of attitude!

Best vegan pizza I ever had (in eight years as a vegan) really enjoyed this restaurant. I often order pizza but it always seems to be bland and boring, to the point where I’ve lost interest in it, but my son wanted to go here for his birthday so we did. It was absolutely divine, so much flavour! Fast service, very kind attentive waiter. Fairly priced. Party of six and the vegans and non vegans all enjoyed! Just a fantastic experience all around! In terms of food my taste buds have been reawakened to a damn good pizza, I’m going to skip the others and be monogamous with pizza express now! Just wow

Lovely experience as always at Pizza Express on Museum Street. Food was fast to arrive and our waitress was super friendly and helpful throughout. As a Coeliac UK accredited restaurant, I always feel safe eating here. Our waitress even went to double check that the garlic butter was still gluten free as the gf label was no longer on the menu for this item. There is also 25% student discount available 6 days a week which is a fantastic offering. Food delicious as usual. Will be back soon!

When I go out, I always make a point to visit Pizza Express. I really enjoy the food and the atmosphere there. Last time, I went with a group of friends and we had a great time trying out the starters, pizzas, and pasta. However, I was a little disappointed with the service at the end of the meal. We wanted to order some desserts or coffee, but the server just left us with the bill on the table without asking if we wanted anything else. Apart from that, it everything else was great!!

We bought two drinks which we planned to redeem for free with the app, but the waiter forgot to add them to the bill and made us pay for them separately when we were about to leave, which meant we weren't able to redeem them on the app, leaving us £8 poorer due to his mistake, and he even tried blaming us that we should've told him about it, as if we're supposed to notice and correct HIS mistake.

I usually like Pizza Express for its loyalty programme and how easy it is to pay through the app. That wasn’t possible because the waiter made us pay for two drinks that we were planning to redeem for free with the app. He forgot to add them to the bill, so redeeming ended up being impossible. The worst part was not the mistake, but the waiter’s attitude and the fact that he continuously put the blame on us for “not telling him”. The atmosphere was also ruined because the same waiter made a mistake with another table and fought with another waiter about it in front of everyone. Good food but ruined by the service.

What you expect from Pizza Express food wise. Set in a nice building, however can be a little noisy in the big room. The guy who served us was lovely, had a laugh with us and made us feel comfortable.

The member of staff that showed up to our table and served us was very friendly, with a lovely welcoming smile on his face. The atmosphere inside was great, though perhaps the music was a little too loud as it was difficult to hear the person sitting opposite me. The pizza was good quality and very tasty. It was also quite reasonably priced for the amount you get.

Location is very nice, next to the Wall, very near to Minster and railway station. Food was okayish. Service was very prompt and attentive.

It's a good pizza express, Building is really nice and feels historical. Had a lovely view In a window seat overlooking the river ouse. It's always a winner with our kids so is also a winner with us parents. We had no booking so had a 10mi wait which at 6pm on a Saturday isn't unreasonable.

Amazing service by Jay. Food great as it always is. Great value, especially the kids menu. Jay went above and beyond and also made a fuss of my 4 year old boy, which he loved.

Me and my little girl had a great dinner sharing starters and mains and dessert, great service, food was delicious and it was a good price. Thank you 😇

Food very good, waiter very good, manager unfortunately openly spoke rudely to staff in front of customers! Our waiter, Atilla, was attentive and efficient, food came out in a reasonable time and was very good. Unfortunately, on two occasions the manager was seen speaking rudely to two different staff. This was done in front of a room of customers at a volume in sure meant more than just ourselves would have heard. Even if mistakes are made, speaking the way he did to the waiting staff was unacceptable and would make me question dining at this restaurant again. Hopefully more senior managers can look into this, as it left us feeling uncomfortable for the waiting staff; completely unnecessary.

Update: Unfortunately our visit today was our worst. Our server was very disengaged. One of the childrens chicken pizzas arrived with no chicken on, not the end of the world. We were happy to just have a few bits of chicken brought out to pop on rather than have a new one made. Daughter started to eat a piece of chicken and said it was disgusting, it was freezing cold. Ordered dessert and after a very long wait and having to ask where it was we were told that they hadn't realised the desert chef had walked out. Bank holiday weekend and a busy Saturday tea time, I appreciate they are busy and probably tired. But the total lack of interest or care for paying customers was disappointing. I really hope it was just an off day as we enjoy coming here.

Our thin Italien pizza was delicious, crispy and well seasoned, bit over priced but not unusual in York. The interior of this beautiful building is stylish. Service was very friendly but we waited a long time when we wanted to pay even we said it twice the waiter was chatting with other guests and ignored us and the place wasn't busy at the time.

Impressive Victorian surroundings in the former Yorkshire Gentlemen's Club, great food and friendly, helpful staff.

Firstly, it was a Friday night so I expected the restaurant to be busy. There was a live band playing when we went. Unfortunately, I went with my family and it was quite loud, making it difficult to have a conversation. This is not the restaurant's fault as it was popular entertainment. Just be aware before you book if you want a quieter evening.

Midweek late dinner after a long train journey. Just the ticket.

Had mostly starters as I wasn’t quite in the mood for pizza. The calamari, wings and pesto dough balls were a delight, however the garlic mushrooms were less garlicky and more balsamic vinegary. The service was okay - it was a Monday evening, so pretty slow but it took a good 5-10min at the entrance with nobody to be seen waiting to be seated. My partner had the sloppy guiseppe, and it seemed very fresh and usual fare for Pizza Express. The highlight is always the Billionaire’s Sundae. They give a mix of caramel and vanilla ice cream with biscuit crumble and chocolate syrup. We shared one this time around but usually, we can easily polish off one each. Highly recommend this for dessert!

Went there last night. Arrived very early for our reservation but was assured by the smiling manager it was no problem. We were seated and very quickly our order was taken by a lovely waitress Ade’. The pizzas arrived very quickly and were hot. Dessert was warm brownie and gelato. I had travelled up from Liverpool to see my daughter and it was lovely to sit and chat. The staff were attentive but not intrusive. They allowed us to sit and chat over coffee, long after other places would have kicked us out. We had a really lovely evening together. Thanks

My daughters had a party at Pizza Express today the room that the party was held in was absolutely beautiful lovely and clean. They had the table set up ready as soon as we walked through the door. all the staff were so hard-working there was 35 young children in total at the party. The staff were so patient and kind to all the children. Chris the manger was very understanding and attentive. Hussain (german man) was so so lovely with all the children, they loved him. There was also another young chef unfortunately i didn't catch his name but he was very good with all the children. All the staff worked so so hard and my kids had the best party. Thank you so much.

Really don’t recommend this place first of all was blanked by staff multiple times when trying to get a table, when ordering food didn’t ask if we had any allergies, one of the pizzas was wrong, then when ordering puddings they brought the wrong puddings out so had to wait longer for them to make new ones not to mention how rude some members of staff were and how they dropped not placed things on the table and the way they spoke DEFINITELY DO NOT COME HERE!!!!

The only knock on this place is it’s a chain. Putting that aside, the surroundings are unique and attractive; the service was friendly; and the food was good for what it was.

We arrived for lunch on 16.2.24 with my guide dog on arrival we were told they don't allow dogs even guide dogs and were asked to leave. Eventually a manager was found and we were granted access but we shouldn't have to fight to be allowed into a premises with my assistance dog that I need to be able to get around. Very upsetting experience.

Unreliable service. If you can not do the delivery you should reject the order quickly. Ordered via deliveroo. Pizza express cancelled the order 5 mins before order was due to be delivered. Had been waiting for around 40 minutes. No explanation = poor customer experience. Plenty of other places for a pizza in York, so will make sure to order elsewhere in future.

Standard pizza express venue. Food was fine. Service from a female waitress was good. Toilets were dirty. In fact the train station toilets were cleaner. One male waiter looked like he had had his clothes on all week. They were filthy. Shirt untucked and food stains all over his top and pants. Quite off putting for eating food.

We went in for takeaway. It's Valentine's Day and half term, so seemed better to not try and get a table. The woman behind the desk was lovely and gave us kid's menus for the children to colour in while we waited. Then a man came to replace her on the desk. We asked if we could order and he said takeaway would be a REALLY long wait. I said we'd go then, and he said we could stay, but takeaway would be a long wait. After a quick deliberation he came back and we asked for a table. He asked if we had a booking. Ummm... No. We came in for takeaway. He looked at us like we'd asked him to cook a pizza while flying us to the moon. "Madam, I have 300 bookings tonight." I said I thought he'd just said we could stay. Apparently I was under the misapprehension that when he said we could stay it meant we could stay. In short, don't come here for takeaway unless you're happy leaving again feeling disgruntled, frustrated, and hungry. No idea how the food is. One star for incredibly poor communication and service.

Very decent visit to celebrate a birthday to include a long term friend. Unobtrusive non persistent professional service from Attila. An enjoyed trip.

The food was very nice and Marta was lovely, very cheerful and efficient. However, we were not particularly impressed by the person which showed us to the table (I’m afraid I didn’t catch his name, but he was wearing a striped Tshirt). Very curt, we didn’t feel welcome at all. I would suggest choosing front staff with better social skills.

Beautiful setting and amazing pizza. Staff were friendly but clearly too busy. We didn't get a drinks order in so gave up in the end, drank water and went elsewhere afterwards.

Five of our party of seven were nearly an hour late as the centre of York was gridlocked. However, Pizza Express kept our table open for us. Even though they were really busy as it was the lead up to Christmas. The food was good and the guy who served us very pleasant, informative and very efficient. The only reason it didn't get 5* for atmosphere is because we were in the entrance room with only a few tables and not on the main room. Apart from the atmosphere, it wasn't really an issue being in this room.

Booked a table today for a family meal (three adults and 5 children) prior to heading to the Pantomime. Amazing service as soon as we walked in. Great food and good value for money. Nothing was too much trouble for our waiter, Liam. Including making my nieces birthday special with a candle and a song with her dessert. Thank you, we will be back.

Brilliant Pizza Express! Standard fare from their menu but the restaurant is in an old Gentleman’s Club and they’ve tastefully retained the grand decor.

On a day trip to York to attend an organ recital at the Minster and as my family and I were tired of walking and absolutely starving, we popped in here. I enjoyed a delicious spicy meat feast pizza and glass of red wine. Good value - I was expecting much higher prices due to being in major tourist area.

I’m only giving one star so I can actually leave a review. Terrible quality and over priced cold food complete with an obnoxious waiter who was full of himself. The only reason he didn’t get a bust lip was thanks to my wife. Absolutely avoid and eat somewhere more upmarket.

Pizza express is what it is - a chain pizzeria but this one stands out for its lovely setting and professional friendly service. Have eaten here 1/2 dozen times and have always had a good experience. Last night we had a calzone and a pizza and both were hot and well cooked. Prices aren’t that cheap though - these were about £ 18 each so above / on a par with what pay for a stone baked artisan pizza - but we usually use Tesco vouchers so food is free.
