Pizza Express in Chelmsford

Unusually for a Pizza Express both getting seated and the service itself were somewhat missing here. T came in mid lunch and told the restaurant was doing ‘bookings only’ - fortunately had pre booked. Sat down and lone server, who seemed to be covering eleven tables, was very pleasant and did periodically check in on us but the lack of staffing meant the food took over two and a half hours across three courses and the table took three hours to clear. The food itself was to the usual high standard, it was merely the service which seemed to be uncharacteristically haphazard. Manager in kitchen and only one server does not make contented customers. A shame as they have the potential to be superb,

Drinks and food order taken very swiftly, but always takes the time to check how we are and have been. Table was booked for 7.30pm on 23.12.24. Food was amazing as always, and although the team appeared to be having a challenging night, they remained professional throughout. Sandie her bubbly self. Constantly checking on tables and on us. Nothing was too much trouble. Merry Christmas to all. We highly recommend.

Very disappointing experience. We were turned away by the waitress, a young lady at 7:15pm. She had informed us that a big seating was arriving any moment and she would not be able to seat us, although it just my partner and I. However, upon walking past 30 minutes later, there was no ‘big seating’ and in fact other we saw her seating other couples, with still many empty chairs. I’m assuming the waitress thought she may have been able to close earlier by refusing us, without expecting other people to wander in. If there was another reason, honesty would have been appreciated. This kind of treatment doesn’t make me want to return.

We waited almost an hour for our starters to arrive and then another hour for our main course. Pizza Express seems to prioritise Deliveroo orders over and above seated customers in the restaurant itself. The good is fine and the staff friendly, but we are unlikely to go again due to excessive waiting times.

The service was impeccable. The food was perfect and came out quickly. Starters first with the perfect gap between getting mains. The waitress was perfect, Charming and funny. Atmosphere is only a 3 because let's be honest. It's a chain restaurant without much character.

Pizza Express in Chelmsford delivers an enjoyable variety of pizzas, including vegan and gluten-free options. Dough Balls and the mushroom truffle pizza are well-received, the quality of food and diverse menu make it worth visiting.

The food was great, the staff were very lovely too, especially Mauro! I only docked a couple of stars off the atmosphere as when there are more customers, it does get rather loud, especially with the music playing in the background, but this is fairly typical of a lot of restaurants. Besides this, everything else is 5 stars from me.

Waited over 2 hours only for it to be incorrect and stone cold. Been offered £6.80 credit for an almost £30 inedible order.

Had a fantastic time at Pizza Express this weekend for a children's birthday party - what a brilliant idea! The host who ran the pizza-making session was an absolute star. He was wonderful with the kids, showing them how to make their own pizzas from scratch with loads of patience and enthusiasm. Such a lovely touch having the children get stuck in making their own meals - If you're looking for a birthday party venue, I'd thoroughly recommend it. Great fun for the little ones and brilliantly organised from start to finish.

I think this is the worst Pizza Express me and my family have been to. The pizzas looked like a child made them. We also waited way too long and the restaurant wasn't even busy! I think that was down to the staff talking too much in the kitchen. They seem to forget they have customers to serve. We won't come back again.

Service was the best, the staff were really kind and welcoming. One staff member that really stood out was Carlos, he was lovely and made the whole experience really enjoyable. Definitely recommend great food and great service.

Rude staff our friends were ignored for almost 15 minutes and the restaurant was quiet. Staff are too busy talking between themselves. Manager was passive aggressive and rude.

We visited on Friday lunch and I must say that the service by Agnieszka was outstanding! Food was great but she definitely made our experience 10 times better!

I ordered a margarita pizza and garlic bread, the quality was awful, a supermarket pizza would have been fresher with more generous toppings. The pizza was small, hard and dry, I wouldn’t order there again, it’s expensive and terrible quality. Don’t waste your money. The delivery was prompt and the man polite.

So disappointed in the Smokey bbq chicken pizza. It was almost bald.. looked nothing like the picture and if we’d been eating at the restaurant I’d have sent it back. Such a pity as previously PE has been a good option for us as we need GF pizza alongside regular ones.

Lovely food & brilliant service

We celebrated my 7-year-old daughter's birthday at PizzaExpress in Chelmsford, and everything was just perfect! Mauro did a fantastic job keeping the kids engaged and entertained, and he even managed to amuse the parents as well. There was a great selection of ingredients for the pizza to choose from, and they had so much fun making their own pizzas. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. The pizzas turned out delicious, and everyone, both kids and parents, were very happy. Thank you for an unforgettable party!

Had my son’s 7th birthday here today and the party was fab! The host Maria was so good with the kids and kept them fully engaged in the pizza making. All the parents commented on how fab the party was. Thank you so much.

Everything was stone cold. Disgusted

I was really disappointed with the duration of being seated to getting our mains this evening! We had sat and waited an hour (or slightly over actually) for our pizzas by which time my 4 year old was too tired to eat his. My pizza was not great (Pollo ad Astra) hardly any topping and instead of the chicken being cajun, cajun had been dusted all over the top of my pizza and ruined it but I was so hungry as I had worked all day and missed my lunch break I would have eaten anything by this point in the day! Service was so slow as team were under pressure. Tables arriving much after us had their mains and had finished time our arrived. Do not blame the staff as they all seemed stressed but nothing was done to apologise for the wait time which I found bad. I work in hospitality so I know only how stressful it is when it is busy but more staff are needed and maybe focus more on customers in the restaurants rather than the take away orders!!

Have had many meals here over the years and always receive amazing service from Renny, Agnieszka and Andreia. They always go above and beyond to ensure we are happy with our food and answer any questions we may have. They are incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients which is very helpful to know while i'm pregnant. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.

It has been a long time I have not been to pizza express in Chelmsford, I went yesterday with my daughter and friends. We were table of 4. I’m pleased to say that the atmosphere was incredibly lovely, the waitress was working hard, checking on us if we need it anything, checking on our food and drinks. Amazing experience. It was a very relaxing Sunday late lunch served by Agnieszshka who was very attentive toward us and helpful on explaining about the food in the menu .I highly recommend pizza express in Chelmsford and Agnieszshka is an excellent member staff withing your team .

Awful. Waited 40 minutes to ge airbed. Another 40 for the food. All ingredients were incorrect. Manager was rude. Finally remade it..everyone else had eaten. It still wasn't correct . Tried to eat it as had now been 2 hours but it was awful. Staff rude. Amd hostile Totally ignored any attempt at eye contact at any point when my son wanted his dessert or we wanted the bill. No apology at any point from anyone. I'm absolutely gobsmacked.

Pizza was tasty but very few ingredients. It looked a bit sparse. Caramelised onion on one or two slices. A bit disappointing.

Waitress brilliant. Our order was in at least 20 minutes before a customer ordered 6 pizzas for takeaway. Inexplicably, he received his order before ours arrived. No apology or explanation. Aside from that, food and service, as good as ever.

the food is always lovely although portion sizes are very inconsistent across other branches i've been to. the worst part that i could not forget was that i overheard our waiter telling another waitress who was about to make our dessert 'oh they can wait' and we have been sitting there for a total of 1.5h already. he was a major disappointment to our family reunion dinner.

I’m usually a fan of Pizza Express, so decided to book a table for a family meal with 3 adults and 1 toddler. On arrival, the waiter was clearly irritated to have customers, and pointed at a table for us to sit at. When asked if we could please change a chair for a highchair, I was told to sort it myself (every other pizza express has always been very family friendly so I was shocked). The waiter disappeared and I had to ask another member of staff for a child’s menu, as we were only given adults. From ordering, it took well over an hour to bring the food. By this stage, my husband had already had to leave with our over hungry toddler to avoid disturbing other diners. We kept trying to get someone’s attention to ask where our meals were, but staff were chatting at the back. Other tables had come, and finished eating in this time. Only one member of staff came over to apologise, and chased up the food. All other staff were rude and had no customer service skills. When the food eventually arrived, my pizza was inedible due to pepper having been thrown on it, and another pizza was burnt. 2 out of 4 of us ended up not eating. The one female staff who had apologised previously brought another pizza, and discounted our meal. We were so disappointed we ended up leaving. The restaurant was not busy, and I can see no reason for the treatment we received. If you want a nice family meal, I would not recommend here.

We had to wait a good five minutes to be seated, another ten for our order to be taken, and three quarters of an hour for our food to be served. The starter we ordered was brought out with the main course, so we had nothing to keep us going while we waited for our pizzas. Note that the restaurant was almost empty at the time - besides ourselves, only three tables were occupied. The food was tasty, but given the high prices and long wait, I wouldn't recommend eating here.

Came for lunch on Monday afternoon. I was served by Agnieszka who was very attentive, helpful and polite. She guided us through the menu and ensured we had everything we wanted. She is definelty a credit to your team, the service she provided and kindness mean I will definitely return

I ate here yesterday and had a lovely waitress called rebecca. She gave me a good recommendation on what to eat and drink and I enjoyed every bit of it! Will be coming back very soon.

2 hours to be delivered, everything stone cold!

We had a birthday party for our daughter's 7th birthday yesterday with 14 children. Josh was our personal chef and he organised the children really well - they all listened to him and followed his instructions to make their own pizza. There was some free time after making the pizzas (colouring was on the table but it can get a bit chaotic!). They had dough balls as a starter, then their pizzas came up then there was ice cream for pudding. We were well looked after and everyone had a great time. Would definitely recommend a Pizza Express party!

I was really looking forward to a super pizza but when it finally arrived 20 minutes late, it was appalling. I’m sure it had been over cooked, I could hardly cut through the base. It was dry with a very thin topping and only just warm. Pizza Express used to be the best……

Another great visit to Pizza Express, Chelmsford - delicious food and excellent, efficient and friendly service. Agnieszka looked after us perfectly, as always.

The food was incredible! I particularly loved the dough balls al forno, but can also recommend Fungi Di Bosco pizza, the dessert pizza, and the chocolate fondant. The restaurant was very clean throughout. Food was brought out very quickly, nice and hot. This experience could have been made even better by the staff being friendlier. They barely spent any time with us, made no recommendations, and only checked if everything was okay once. Overall, I'd recommend Pizza Express for sure. The Chelmsford branch is okay.

Despite ordering at around 6:45, the delivery estimated time was constantly pushed back with the courier waiting at the restaurant for around 2 hours, all for one pizza and a salad

Visited on a Monday evening, great time to go as it was less busy than usual. Service excellent, food very tasty. Only one minor criticism was the burning smell when we arrived, just assumed that the chef had just burnt something but there was a horrible burning smell about 4 times during our visit. Would have been nice to have the lovely aroma of pizza rather than burning, hence the four rather than 5 stars.

We booked via the app and came on Friday 11th May - the restaurant wasn’t overly busy but it was very busy with Deliveroo - our waitress was so good at keeping us in the picture about how long our starters and pizzas would be - giving us a free drink because we were waiting so long - Big shout to her she was very friendly and helpful - we were table 7 at 6.15pm - ( sorry I didn’t get her name)

Hadn't been for a whole and wads dying for a Fiorentina Pizza and they didn't disappoint. Yum ! !

The delivery time just kept getting later and later. I tried tried to cancel and was told I could not because they are “already preparing my food” - yet they took one hour and 10 minutes for it to arrive and when it did arrive it was stone cold. Absolutely disgusted. How on earth can they take peoples money and provide this appalling service? They simply do not deserve Peoples custom.

My friend and I had such a lovely evening and dinner at the Chelmsford Pizza Express- our wonderful waitress Agnieszka was, as usual so attentive and friendly. It made our evening so much more enjoyable! Thank you

This is the second time I've been to this pizza express. Staff are friendly and don't rush you. I love that they have a proper vegan menu, not just one option. So, why 4 stars and not 5? The toilets are up a spiral staircase, I don't know whether there is an accessible toilet downstairs, but there is a step to get in. Also one of the toilets doesn't flush well.

We make a point of dining out weekly. Sometimes for lunch, sometimes for dinner. Pizza Express is always a top choice. Staff are always friendly and the food is always as expected. We always enjoy our time here. Highly recommend.

Delivery person was very polite and followed instructions to find the back entrance to work building in the dark, big thank you to him.

Clearly a bad day today, the service and quality of pizza left a lot to be desired. Pizza base was soggy and greasy and altogether not pleasant, looked as though it had been sitting about for a while before getting to me even though it was hot. On the plus side, the gluten free option for my husband was good.

It’s been a long time since I last visited their Chelmsford branch, and I’m pleased to say it was a refreshingly pleasant experience compared to previous visits! The new dough ball options were great, and they even do a square pizza! All very tasty! Staff were great. The lady that waited our table 'Agnieszka' was fantastic! very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was very busy but the team did a great job and the food was excellent. My son is quite fussy with food and we love Pizza express!

Wasn't first choice but greeted well & taken to our table upstairs. No real greet by the waiter but was attentive and took our order. Asked for water, brought by another waitress, got the jug but no glasses. That was quickly sorted. Timing, it was a Saturday night & probably a busy service however food took over an hour to be sent. We asked the waiter and was told they had a lot of deliveroos. Food, when it arrived, tasted good. Waitress forgot a starter, not surprised as waiter didn't write it down initially but memorised it. The table beside us, with 2 kids and we had our 1, the kids food came alot sooner. Seemed like they weere regulars there. All in all, food when it arrived was good. Waiter was very polite and helpful but couldn't help but think the poor guy had already put 1 and a half shifts in already that day. Would it be my first choice? Maybe not. But you won't see me there next week or month. One to go to once or maybe twice a yesr

We just had our daughters 6th birthday party at Pizza Express. Mauro and rostik was great with hosting the party. The kids enjoyed it. So friendly highly recommend them! And the pizza was yummy! Thanks guys :)
