Pig and Abbot in South Cambridgeshire

In 2024, you would expect most pubs and restaurants to have a menu catering for all tastes. We asked on a Sunday lunchtime for one vegan and one vegetarian roast dinner. When ordering , it turned out the roast potatoes were done in goose fat. The dinner itself was lovely, the nut roast, which is always a joke amongst non-vegetarians was superb, but we had to make do with chips. I would ask anyone if they could taste the difference between roast potatoes done in goose fat or roast potatoes done in rapeseed oil, not even the customers would know I am quite sure. Despite this, the pub was beautiful, the staff were excellent, but they really should have another option frozen for guests, vegan and vegetarian meatless loaves are easy to source and also cheap, maybe next time?

My wife booked 12 of us in for Mother’s Day two to three weeks in advance. Initial service from the manager, Pat, was great until she decided we no longer had a booking four days before and spoke extremely rudely to my other half - hanging up on her and promising to call back (she didn’t). She suggested my wife had simply imagined the booking. This wasn’t the case and to put this on a customer is poor service. My family and I won’t ever be going thanks to her appalling treatment. No stars if I could.

The food is amazing. Extremely friendly atmosphere. The staff are lovely. Pat the landlady is so helpful. Highly recommend this beautiful country pub.

As always we had a lovely meal at the Pig and Abbot. The steak pies are delicious- the pastry melts in your mouth.

On a drive for the last of the summer sun. Went to stop at the waggon and horses but it did not look good. So choose the Pig and Abbot instead. Glad we did. Very traditional pub, really friendly staff. But food was the best. On recommendation I had the chicken and tarragon pie, large portion and would highly recommend. well worth a visit.

Came across this pub on our walk. Got a friendly welcome and enjoyed drinks outside, in this cosy, +300yr old hostelry. The food looked nice so we'll return to try it shortly.

We met as a family here for a Sunday roast. The pub was roughly half way from our respective homes. Lovely location and excellent roast. The hamlet is unique with some lovely walks in the are to build up the appetite! Strongly recommended.

Our journey to this wonderful pub with a warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere is so worth it. Twenty minutes traveling and we feel like we’re at our second home 🥰 Pat the landlady is one in a million, a diamond 💎 Our son in law stumbled upon this pub one day on TA whilst searching for a Mother’s Day meal. We have never looked back. We will be visiting this pub for as long as we are physically able to. We love you Pat and especially enjoy all of the meals you have presented to us. We visited the Pig and Abbot this week for a lunch and was not disappointed. I had parsnip soup for starters white my partner had whitebate. Both were delicious. Main course was steak and kidney pudding for me and chicken and leek pie for him. The steak and kidney pudding was great……as good, if not better, than home cooked. My partner thoroughly enjoyed his pie. We had no room for pudding so cannot comment but I am sure they are great too. We like the atmosphere of this pub……..a bit quirky in the best way…..not ‘run of the mill’. There are too many ‘run of the mill’ places to eat in any town. The fires were not lit unfortunately but still a great atmosphere. Highly recommended.

We were lucky enough to have Christmas dinner at the Pig and Abbot. Our family group was large but the restaurant staff coped with ease, serving a wonderful meal and making sure we had a wonderful festive meal. We have had meals at the pub in the past and have always had top quality food and service. Cannot be faulted.

What a great pub this is. The event was a Gentlemen’s pre-Christmas dinner, 10 hungry souls all wanting to be fed. As always in this establishment, the food was good and the portions generous. The staff were all terrific and served us promptly, professionally and with very good humour. I would warmly recommend the P&A for a warm welcome and good value.

We “ discovered the “ Pig & Abbot, today ( Monday) after visiting National trust property Wimpole Hall near Royston , decided to treat ourselves to a pub lunch , being a Monday most pubs were either closed or not cooking 😫 Luckily the “ Pig &Abbot” was open & cooking, although they were busy & we hadn’t booked ( but certainly will next time); we received a warm welcome! 20 mins later we were tucking into a lovely freshly cooked lamb & mint pie, delicious 🤤 Pat (the owner) came across for a lovely chat & to make sure we enjoyed , we will be back with friends very soon.

A most enjoyable lunch today with children and grandchildren. The staff were particularly welcoming and helpful. Real ale was very well kept. We'll be back.

We were recommended the Sunday roast by a lady in our village, so we went on a special birthday weekend to try it. The staff were great, as was the service and the atmosphere amazing. The toilets were fabulous, better than any pub I’ve seen in a long time. However the roast was just ok. The roast and veg was good, but the meat lacked flavour and the dynamic we like for a good roast was very low. The gravy was also very dull. I regretfully write this as I so wanted to love everything about this pub.

Was recommended to try this Gem of a place by a friend. My husband and I visited for the first time in September and loved it here. Returned with sister and brother in law last night ( Thursday 22nd October ) and again it didn’t disappoint! Was given a table by the roaring fire which was lovely, the staff are very helpful and friendly and the pies ( which we all had !) were just amazing! Good wine and great ambience in this friendly place set in a beautiful village and we will definitely be returning! Cannot recommend highly enough !

Well,11 ladies went to have a meal,as because of Covid,we hadn’t had our monthly lunch club,so I decided to speak with Pat and take a group of ladies.We had the restaurant to ourselves.Two tables of six,socially distanced,oh and the husbands were banished to the bar,for their meal! What excellent fare we were served,minted lamb pies,lasagnes,fish pie etc,nothing like telling the landlady what you want on the menu choices!Also I asked for a sticky toffee pudding to be on the puds list,it was.That’s why we keep coming back,as we are so well looked after.Not only that Pat made pies for the ladies and delivered them personally a week later,Individual pies!What a star you are Pat.See you in DecemberThank you.Lynn,and Potton ladies club.

Well let me tell you we visited for lunch yesturday after coming for a drink two weeks ago. This pub is how a good English village pub should be! Cosy with an open fire, oak beams and a beutiful bar. No grey paint and fairy lights here my friends. Wonderful friendly bar staff and superb welcoming landlord and landlady! I had the Barnsley lamb chops , cooked to perfection and my partner had the steak and kidney pie, which was homemade and to die for!! Cooking at its best!! Vegetables cooked to perfection and chops cooked to perfection!! The toilets are fantastic. I will leave you to check them put. When we left, all the regulars we saw on pur first visit, all waved and said goodbye, as did the landlord!! We felt like a local!! Thank you guys!! See you soon!!

What a great find this was. Local rural pub with great food. All pies made to order, the beef and ale pie was best I've ever had. Good value for money and friendly staff. Will be back.

Had a meal recently as always food is excellent all freshly made, always plenty that you wouldn't go home hungry . Steak and kidney pudding very filling always reminds me of my nans and that says something 😋. Thanks again Pat and mick.

If you are looking for a great take away traditional Sunday lunch then look no further than the Pig & Abbot in Abington Pigotts. Just finished eating our roast beef and Yorkshire pudding with all the trimmings - very generous portions that guarantee you won't go hungry! The quality of the beef was superb (served medium rare). Great value too at £11.Many thanks to Mick and Pat for providing such excellent home-cooked food during the difficult times.

Frieindly, welcoming old school country pub. Well kept beers at sensible prices .Varied menu, good portion sizes. Thanks for the advice re not ordering a side of fries as portion served with one meal were enough for 2 of us.The mixed salad on the plate was fine although more dressing would have been better. A trip with Mr Pavey ! White bait starter fantastic and then steak and ale, beef and Stilton and a lamb and mint pie with a selection of veg and potatoes ! Fantastic all round ! Staff and land lady brilliant and the tall blond waitress must have been having a rest from the super model catwalk, all so nice and food brilliant value and cooked superbly would recommend to anyone ! You will need to book though and dog friendly !!

Went with friend and had an excellent lunch of home made fish pie, couldn't be better, as it was topped with mashed potato we opted for a salad with it, very fresh and the addition of coleslaw was a welcome addition. The restaurant was busy so we had to wait a while for a menu and the meal.

I don't usually make it to pud as I am full up after the pie and great quantity of veg. Shared the home made sticky toffee pudding amongst 3 of us last night. Oh that was to die for.The dilemma next time is pie or pud!!!This place has wonderful home cooked food with good portions and the sarnies are good as well.Booking is very strongly recommended.

Two of us called in for lunch this week as we were feeling the need for a hearty meal.

We visited the pig and abbot with four other friends on Saturday evening so table booked for six. These friends had never been there before. I have to say the feedback I got from these friends was amazing. Everyone enjoyed their meal and thought it was such good value for the price. Just a shame every one was so full and could not take on desserts!!! Excellent service and very busy.

Ate here for the first time in October 2019. The pub is lovely and cozy with a real fire and excellent atmosphere. Seating was comfortable and the beer was excellent.

Welcomed to Sunday lunch by young and friendly staff. Generous portion sizes with lots of extras. I enjoyed the turkey roast which really did have all the trimmings; cranberry sauce, sausage, bacon, stuffing, yorkshire as well as lots of veg. Glad we left room for desert as they were good too. Rounded it all off by a walk from the village. Will be back.

Being somewhat new to the area we visited this pub on a recommendation. We had Turkey and Lamb roasts with fresh veg, nothing frozen. Food was excellent with good portion size. Lovely friendly pub. Will definitely be back.

It was my Husband's birthday so we make a quick choice to go back to the Pig and Abbot just four of us. What a lovely welcome back and great food. My husband and daughter had those amazing pies which they loved.

Nice village setting. Warm, friendly service. Good choice of homemade fayre. I went for fillet steak which was melt in the mouth divine! Highly recommended.

Thank you to Pat and her team of staff who helped us out with my Mum's funeral lunch at short notice as the Three Tuns in Guilden Morden could not cope with a party of 30 so let us down.

We visited The Pig & Abbott for lunch with our friends and, despite being just outside the kitchen opening hours, Pat and her team went the extra mile to accommodate us. Having been a number of times, we know all about the mouth-watering homemade pies and tasty fish and chips. Our friends were equally impressed with the quality of food, range of traditional beers on offer, the pub’s unique charm, wonderful historic decor and the general ambience which fills every corner of this place - something so rare and hard to find in this day and age.

A lovely country pub, unspoiled by the usual music/TV etc. Always a great welcome, and the food is excellent. The pies are now our benchmark - and I wonder how many other country pubs serve Movenpick ice cream as standard. There can be quite a long wait for the food to arrive - but it is worth it. Thanks to the team there for their help with our party's mobility and dietary issues. They can't do enough to help.

The best home cooked food you could asked for generous portions, all the staff friendly and welcoming would definitely be going again.

The portion sizes and vegetables/salad that came with the mains were also superb. And all was reasonable value for money.

Country pub that has recently laid a new carpet. On our arrival, the landlord greeted us and made us take our shoes off. Reminded me of my Auntie Carol who left the plastic cover on her three piece suite for the first year. We had a shoeless drink and then endured a trip to the toilet wearing socks. A first (and last) for me!

We visited the Pig and Abbot at lunch time and were greeted by very friendly staff. We requested two of their Steak and Kidney Puddings, a Hunters Chicken and the Pork Loin in a Cream and Prune sauce. All utterly delicious, served with generous amounts fresh veg/salad/choice of potatoes. We were all so full we couldn’t unfortunately eat a dessert. If you want a really tasty, well cooked and presented meal you can’t go wrong with the Pig and Abbot’s fare. We will definitely return!

Very good traditional pub. Well kept real ales and varied guest beers which change regularly. Good food in large helpings, not really 'gastro' pub, but that is sometimes a good thing. Friendly staff and owners.

Came to this pub for lunch with my friend, had been here previously many time with family and it’s been wonderful however this time not so. I ordered the whitebait as a starter which initially was okay as I got to the bottom of the pot there was a dead fly with the food which had been cooked. After a complaint we then moved onto mains which was of average standard myself eating the ribs and my friend eating the lasagne. My friend picked out a piece of plastic that was mixed in with the lasagne.

There is always a very warm welcome from Pat and her staff at the Pig and Abbott. The food is home cooked and A varied menu to suit all tastes.

Beautiful country location and great choice of food all prepared to order. The home made pies are delicious and all served with home touches like extra gravy. The staff could not have been more attentive and friendly.

Last night we had dinner at the Pigg and Abbot.All four of us ordered the home made pies which were delicious, with crisp Pastry and the extra gravy was just yummy. Unfortunately for me I was given the wrong pie but it was dealt with in the most amazing way. Thank you Pat.

Had been recommended this pub but sadly we did not have a good experience ..I don't know if they have a new chef !!

took a man from San Francisco to sample the wares. . he did not say a word from the moment that pie,mash apeas dish hit the table...which for hin is a veeery long time. . you can keep your Boluga and Truffles Pats pie's take the biscuit...the lady who wrote in the unfavourable fish review should have spoken to the Landlady or staff member whilst at the table all would have been resolved. the Pub sells the best Pies in Christendom ....you don't go into Boots and order cheese . if you go back and have a pie just say to Pat (the landlady) John is paying for mine . . she knows my credit is good,,LIKE HER PIES. Oh dear. We were two of only six people lunching. After 10-minutes we managed to attract the attention of the waitress who came over and asked "Yes ?". It went down from there. We had the fish pie which was 80%dry potato with some mashed up fishy stuff in the bottom. The beer was OK.

After having a scrummy Sunday Lunch the weekend before we decided after our walk to go for lunch today so the thought Fish and Chips kept us motivated!

Get your GPS ready. Without it, a couple of years ago, we went around in circles. But, oh, it is worth it. Truly, it is one of the finest little pubs you could ever imagine. The food is great. The beer is great. You probably should make reservations. They serve traditional British food with flair. If you have a car, it is not so far from Cambridge, but definitely in the countryside... a lovely experience.

A beautiful pub, in a quaint little village with beautiful thatched cottages. Both log fires were smoldering giving off a lovely aroma but not roaring too much as surprisingly it was a warmish day. We had starters and Sunday roasts which were all delicious with lots of lovely vegetables, plenty for all five of us. Very reasonably priced and good service. This pub is also dog friendly which is great.

We had a delightful lunch at Pig & Abbot. Tried the haddock, Goan fish curry & Avocado salad. Enjoyed the English sun on the deck outside. Service was warm & owner even drove us back to South farm.

Our table was booked for 7.30 on a Sunday night and we arrived about 5 minutes later. We were served with our drinks and taken to our table promptly enough and ordered our food. We were still waiting at 8.30 pm and getting a bit impatient (and hungry) but the lady behind the bar told us that our food was now on its way. Unfortunately that was not true as we had to wait for another 30 minutes, our dishes only appearing just gone past 9 pm.

It is consistently good. Lovely walks around the village - if you have time to burn off some calories!

When you enter the Pig' passing through it's vestibule you enter the main bar area there is an aroma of seasoned logs burning to the right and left of you .TURN LEFT and over the mantlepiece you will see the Pie Chart , the steak and ale one is the finest meat cooked in ale then that traditional pastry. no puff here mate . once ordered these pinnacles of the culinary art will be served by the wonderful young staff while Pat slaves over a hot oven to provide such socculance ....Mike the landlord proudly samples his beautiful ales...sorry i can't go on i've become overcome with the desire to revisit this mecca of gluttony . see you there john
