Picnic Fayre in North Norfolk

My friend got some delicious garlic pesto for her mum, as well as a very filling and glorious pastry chorizo and bacon pie. I got some homemade tea tree soap, but I have to say, my favourite thing I ate there was the pear and ginger cake, which was the most delicious thing I have eaten in a while!!!!

Was looking forward to my visit but at 4.56pm was told we’re shutting now! Rudely spoken to by a grey haired lady putting food outside for the locals we were told. Sadly will not be spending our money there in the next 2 weeks even though we were recommended this place to visit!

This is one of my favourite places to get snacks. Although in recent months the opening hours have changed (not for the better) which has caught me off guard a few times and the staff are not alway as welcoming as they used to be. Hopefully it's because they're just finding their feet.

We called in to pick up something sweet for later that day. The cakes and pastries were absolutely amazing – seriously some of the best we’ve ever had. We’ll definitely be back (with a bigger rucksack).

Expensive, but handy local shop. Quite friendly service, but the prices here are phenomenal. Okay if you need emergency provisions.

Firstly, this place is not in Holt at all. It’s in Cley next the Sea, about 20 minutes away. It’s well worth the trip. Everything is wonderful. It is an Aladdin’s Cave of great food and drink, in a beautiful old forge. The staff are always the nicest people imaginable. But that’s not even the best thing. The absolutely unbeatable thing about Picnic Fayre is the home made cakes, and locally baked bread and patisserie. The croissants and cinnamon buns are the best I’ve tried anywhere in the UK. The croissants in particular are better than 95% of those I have tried in France. Don’t go expecting a bargain, but you will not be disappointed. Oh and the coffee is superb too. Just a reminder this is a (wonderful) deli not a cafe, there is no indoor seating.

Good selection of cheeses and baked goods on the deli counter. Artisan style breads. Fresh local veg outside. Felt a little on the pricey side. As the name implies it is the ideal choice for some interesting lunch or picnic treats.

Following disappointment that a local cafe is now a shop picked up lunch here today & we both recommend the Binham blue, pear & walnut tarts, delicious car picnic! Very good range of deli items, pastries & cakes.

Not a restaurant. Best deli ever. Top quality cakes, pies, sausages and more + cheeses, meats, olives etc. Locally made ice cream. Superb pickles, jams and a great selection of wines. I am addicted to their fried broad beans. Ran out during first lockdown. They replenished me within 1 day of ordering. Always excellent service.

A good and varied shop has almost everything you need. The sausage rolls were excellent and also the Ice Cream hatch was a welcome treat in the heat. Good Ice cream too

This place sells the most amazing cakes and lots of fresh locally sourced produce along with lots of other delights such as breads and wines and you can get a nice cup of take away coffee, I personally recommend the sticky pear and ginger cake.

I can’t recommend this place highly enough. The cakes… the pies… the pastries.. all fabulous. Also wonderful fruit and veg, home made and local produce. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Just superb.

I have to agree with another reviewer on here, when we visited it was very busy and chaotic is the right word to use. We looked to see how many people were inside and even with the restriction of 10 persons it was a bit over whelming. The counter was barely visible behind all the customers, so we didn’t get the opportunity to see what they had before managing to reach it. My daughter and I found it too much, so we exited and left my husband to buy the fruit, olives and hummus which we’d chosen from outside the shop and a chilled cabinet inside. These were all very good purchases, apart from the peaches, which we didn’t enjoy. This shops’s not for us, we like a shop where we can think about what we’re purchasing, but I can see the attraction.

Called in for picnic supplies and ended up with a carrier bag full of goodies. Lavender bread was delicious and local cheeses tasty and good selection. Star turn was pear and ginger cake. Absolutely delicious! Highly recommended!

The croissants are truly amazing. I bought a sausage roll for later and it was the best I’ve ever tasted. What is going on here? Everything we tried (we abandoned travel plans and did another 90 minute road trip to return) was ‘best we’ve ever had’! And the serving lady so polite and helpful.

Matthew took my phone order and went way and above what I would have expected from a store during lockdown. He managed to source produce for me that the store didn’t have in stock! And they delivered too! Quite a change from the usual substitutions...

Called in for snacks after walking from Salthouse and before returning to Blakeney. Excellent selection and well managed Covid security. Well worth a visit. Had the best Potugese custard tart I've had outside of Prtugal.

Pricey and service isn't impressive but very interesting range of snacks, breads, cakes and supplies.

Always such a great selection of wonderful produce. Tastes galore and really friendly service, definitely worth visiting, which we do. Every time we visit Blakeney, we walk to Cley specifically to shop here. I have to say that this is probably my most favourite delicatessen and wish it was in Edinburgh!!

We’ve visited this deli several times a year since 2008 when we first discovered it, and in fact I’ve previously left a 5 star review! But today I was left sorely disappointed in the customer service given. Yes it was Bank Holiday Monday, so they were busy - but a customer is a customer regardless of the day! I was served in the afternoon by an older lady with glasses who I haven’t seen before. She could barely raise a smile of greeting, which didn’t give a good first impression, and I felt like I was inconveniencing her! The cakes we normally buy here are fresh and generous in size, but not today. The chocolate cake was small and dry and had a big chunk missing off the back of the slice. The brownie broke in half as the lady picked it up - rather than picking a better whole one instead, she grabbed the other broken bit and plonked them in the bag together. Then as I passed her a loaf of bread to wrap, she queried whether I knew that it was sourdough - as if I might not be the sort of customer who ever buys it?! When in fact I specifically chose it! All minor things alone, but as a whole poor customer service combined with high prices and average quality has left me very disappointed today.

I bought the biggest slab, of Victoria Sponge, which myself, son and hubby shared...It was glorious, moist and flavoursome.We also bought a couple of red, which a helpful chap recommended..... ( We have yet to try these, but if they are any way, near as good as the cake, they will be superb!! )We also picked up some cheese..... Again delicious!!!I would definitely recommend this deli....Very friendly and helpful staff too!!!!

You just cant beat the variety and freshness of the produce in this store...the quiches were particularly scrumptious this visit ... as was the pear and Stilton tart. Fab ...

We have found a shop that sells excellent Norfolk Pasties and Norfolk Ice Cream including my favourite, Gooseberry. It has its own parking facilities and sells excellent deli stuff and lovely cakes. I acnnot wait to return

Camped near Cley Next The Sea over the weekend; stopped off at Picnic Fayre on our way to the Marshes Visitors Centre for some picnic food - we weren't disappointed! They have a fantastic selection of edibles; not cheap, but definitely worth it! A special mention for their piping hot, meaty/herby sausage rolls! Thank you very much. If we're ever in the area again, we would definitely re-visit.

Every village needs somewhere like this. Fabulous tiffin, great selection of local produce. Friendly staff.

Having been in this establishment for the first time, I have to say I won't go back. Was looking to purchase a fantastic selection of cheese, but felt rushed trying to make my decision, wanted to ask if could try some buy the lady who informed me she was 'the boss' made me feel more than anything uncomfortable and not welcome even though I still managed to spend £25 and a bit more on cream some disappointing cheeses, potatoes and a pint of milk. The Portuguese Custard Tarts tantalised me but after 'the boss' was once again sarcastic decided I wasn't going to spend any more in this over priced pretentious 'deli'.

Located just outside the main centre of Cley, Picnic Fayre has its own park. It offers very fresh fruit and seasonal vegetables, bread, cheeses, pies, jams, chutney, olives etc as well as lots of local and seasonal produce too many to list.

Great choice of local food - fresh bread, good wines, local milk etc. There is a shop car park at the rear which is a great help in Cley.

I selected my Asparagus bunch and walked in through the door to be delighted by the array of foods on offer. Rivals anything I have seen and smelt! Full of character and charm this Deli is delicious, well worth a visit even if you don't need a thing you will succumb to its magic.

We stumbled across Cley next the Sea on our way to Blakeney, and were shocked at what we found. What we thought was a quaint little village shop actually turned out to be a treasure trove of locally sourced, high quality and fairly priced food of huge variety.

As there are no other general food shops in Cley, Picnic Fayre is an essential establishment, selling fresh fruit, bread, wine & beer, and an excellent deli, and seems to be open most of the time.

Oh my. What a lovely find. An absolute must to visit when your in the area. Brownies to die for! Brays pies too were amazing . Wish I lived close by as you would be my go to store. I found the staff very helpful and knowledgeable. See you really soon I hope.

Excellent food of many varieties, from olives to lavender bread (both recommended). The only place I know to get hot garlic pickle, worth the visit on its own (you can try it before buying). Also an amazing range of cakes, good cheeses, a selection of wines, and chocolate, apart from the veg outside. We always go when we're staying in Norfolk.

When we walked in we could small hot bakes bread 🍞 and it was hot sour dough. I have never tasted such delicious bread and wish I had bought 2 loaves. Cakes look yummy and everything in here is yum...definitely worth a visit!

We've bought from here many times over the years usually in conjunction with a visit to the Smokehouse over the way. Consistently fresh and a good selection.

Great selection of food and drink including local products. Staff could have been more friendly and really shouldn't pick their teeth whilest serving.....

Bought their delicious pork pies and treacle tart. There was lots more to chose from. Easy parking off road too.

This is a little more than a village shop! The range of produce is so wide and varied that you may be in danger of leaving here with an empty wallet! Well done to the owners.

It is the easiest thing to drive by the Picnic Fayre thinking it's just a convenience store of village shop. When you see the signs for their good sized car park make sure you pull right in.

This is an Aladdin’s Cave of a shop with the most amazing selection of foods for such a small village. It’s just a pity that the person who served us wasn’t that friendly or helpful!

This place has a wonderful selection of fresh food as well as specialty items to take away. The coffee was good but not really hot enough. The sausage rolls are amazing. We would have bought more of the freshly baked items from bread to cakes to fudge, however none of this produce was covered and there were a lot of flies and wasps landing on the food. This was a shame because it’s easy to correct by using a screen/ covers.

We definitely recommend stopping by here! The staff are super friendly and the pastries are so tasty!

The pasties bought here are just what I like. They have a superb deli, and also sell wonderful Norfolk Ice Cream with flavours like raspberry and champagne and my favourite gooseberry. It is a quality store.

Charming local deli with a superb range of produce - mostly local - that are really high quality. Wide range of unusual breads and lots of nice homemade items too.

The staff are friendly and helpful the produce is fresh and top quality and the wines and beers good with some unusual examples. The fresh produce is great with a good selection of top quality food, coleslaw, chicken and ham pie, venison pie and a great selection of cakes.

This is an Aladdin’s cave of wonderful delights! From the Paxton Acre sourdough (not available on Sunday or Monday)fantastic pies and pastries, stunning array of fruit and vegetables, amazing nibbles, wines, beers or the spices you forgot it has it all!

Just like a village Deli should be full of very tempting breads, cold meats, local cheeses etc etc, plus they sell Norfolk wines. The fresh vegetables are a must. A big bonus is there own car park although you can use the village car park and enjoy all the other delights of Cley next the Sea then finish your visit by stocking up at Picnic Fayre.

Lovely little deli in the beautiful village of Cley, the only thing negative I would say is to cover your dishes of sunflower seeds and cashew nuts. I was tempted to buy some cashew nuts nut being uncovered put me off - sorry. We bought some local wine and wished we were staying in a self catering place rather than a pub. Next time....

Staying nearby I popped in for some salad items displayed outside but on entering was truly amazed at the vast variety of items for sale.

What a truly remarkable delicatessen / grocer/ gastronomically heavenly shop. It has loads of local produce including breads and cakes and cheeses and wines and chutneys and, and ......!!!! The service was very friendly, knowledgeable and helful.

Been going here for two decades nearly now. It is fantastically well stocked withe great bread from a village bakery. Excellent pies and pastries (there is nothing better than the Bray pork pies), huge, generous slices of cake and tart. The ginger and pear cake is always exceptional. The service is brisk but with a small crowded shop, it needs to be. It is a great deli.

Been for the last couple of years, just love the hot garlic pickle - came back for more. The Moroccan paste is excellent as well. Loads of fresh food, cooked on site. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Fantastic quality in everything, the Treacle Tart was very nice as was the Chicken and ham pie.. perfect for a snack (not really picnic weather unfortunately).

We've been coming to North Norfolk for years and a stop in Cley for a wander round the quaint cobbled streets is always on the agenda. It wouldn't be complete without a stop in their beautiful old deli either. The quaint little building is bedecked with tempting treats and fresh baked goods, the lovely fruit and veg is displayed outside in wicker baskets in beautifully nostalgic fashion.

We went to track down a local cheese and left with a huge sour-dough and some wonderful cakes, as well as The Norfolk Dapple cheese we were looking for.

Love this place. Delicious deli with wonderful wines, excellent cheeses fresh bread, delicious veg and fruits. There are lots of different types of chutneys and greek foods and treats. I have been buying Chevanceau wine there for many years, by the case from a small vineyard. It is a place with quality produce many items home made and fresh.

We were staying in cley and come across this lovely shop! It is so inviting from the outside you have to step in! It has so much fresh and local produce on display, it draws money from your purse. Inside there is an amazing selection of bakery and deli items you have to buy something. Also sells the Ronaldo ice cream. The residents of cley are lucky to have this on their doorstep!

What a lovely deli , lovely selection of fruit , veg, wine, cheeses , cakes, pies and lots more. Everything tasted lovely i spent quite a bit of money but well worth it,also good to get food from a local shop instead of a supermarket. Also all the assistants behind the till attentive and friendly

This shop is close to where we stay and we have used it over the years, mainly for ice creams. This year we found that it does a lot more. It has a superb cold counter where one can buy Norfolk Pasties, (a replacement source with Owl in Holt changing hands), and rustic breads, vegetables etc.

Wonderful fresh fruit and vegetables, excellent cakes and tarts, bread, charcuterie. A real find in Cley.

An excellent shop which is not at Holt but at Cley next the sea, 4 miles from Holt. A very interesting range is offered by this shop. They cook their own cakes, pies and lots of other fresh foods, very pleasant staff and an excellent shop in a small village, an eclectic mix of stock and a real pleasure to shop at. Visit!

We went in here to get some food for a picnic with friends and ended up getting far too much ! The choice of goodies is amazing and I've knocked off 1 point as when we were there the staff seemed more concerned with chatting to their friends than actually helping us. Still, we'd go again next year !

We love the Ronaldo's Norfolk icecream from here. They also sell delicious Norfolk Pasties, as good as the ones that I used to buy at the Owl Tea Rooms in Holt. Luckily the shop is even nearer base so they can expect a return visit.
