Phranakhon Thai Tapas in York

So the first time here and the place is very small and with little atmosphere. The tables were tiny, not large enough to hold drinks and a couple of plates let alone a mixture of tapas food! The service I found was by far the worst. The young girls on service were very robotic with no personality at all. It made for a very strange evening. Ordering 7 dishes they didn’t all come at the same time which I found very odd. Other tables I noticed had all their food brought out at the same time. 3 dishes were brought out and we had to start eating as the food would have gone cold. 10 minutes later the rest came out. Very disappointed that it didn’t all come together. When asking for the bill again got a very robotic response from service. There is really no personality in this place, it’s really uninviting. The only good thing: food was really good! Cannot falter the food at all. Other than that, place was not great.

Very little ambience in the restaurant. On arrival for our prebooked 7.30 table for a birthday meal, the first words we were greeted with was "you need to clear your table by 9 as we have another group coming". The young man serving us was very friendly but the whole meal felt rushed as the manager clearly wanted us out quickly for the next booking. Food was good but due to complete lack of ambience we are unlikely to return.

Amazing Thai tapas restaurant. Wide selection of food, with a large pork offering, and some of the biggest prawns I’ve ever seen! The sticky rice was great to go with the prawn red curry. I’d also highly recommend the chicken satay. 5 dishes plus prawn crackers and rice was plenty for 2 of us to share. Plus a bottle of wine came to £88 incl. tip!

Brilliant Thai, decent sized portions, couldn't fault any of the 5 dishes we had....watch out for those lethal chillies😂 sorry no photos...this time

We got a table spontaneously and because we weren't very hungry, each of us only took one dish. That was completely enough for us and filled us up. The food was super delicious and the conditions were simply nice, friendly and customer-oriented. The conditions took great care of me because I unfortunately have an allergy to crustaceans. I can recommend the pretty and cute little restaurant.

Hi Strange experience Everyone else seemed to get good service while we were ignored No offer of prawn crackers No how is everything No would you like another drink No desert menu Then rushed out at bang on 7.30pm having been completely ignored apart from having food All the other tables had good service but we had the best view looking out the window Maybe they ignore the good view people and focus on service for the rest Very nice food. Great shredded beef Doubt we will ever go back just for the weird poor service issue

Small, intimate, friendly. Food was good but disappointed with some dishes. Hot was not hot, mild was not mild. Some but not a vast selection of gluten free.

A lovely hidden gem overlooking a classic York Street. Food was stunning and good service from start to finish would highly recommend. Not the cheapest but very good.

No problem getting a table for 2 on a Friday afternoon. We opted for the meal deal of 2 tapas dishes with rice so had 4 between us. All were tasty with good levels of spice. We wimped out of a 3 star spiced tofu so want to go back to try that again. Small place so possibly worth a booking if you’re planning on being around instead of walking up and deciding like what we did.

I've been here a few years back and loved it. This time, I felt disappointed. Food was very average, and the portions were tiny. Staff is avoiding any kind of interaction. We've asked for another bowl of rice, and the waiter nearly shouted "no" and left. Obviously, we wanted to pay extra but couldn't get the chance to order anything more. There were only a few customers except for us, and no one tried to approach us.

Food was delicious with a broad selection of dishes to choose from. We were hungry so chose 3 dishes each plus a rice and broccoli (chefs recommendation - definitely worth it!). All dishes were superb. It was very busy but we hadn't booked and were seated straight away. May have been slightly crowded if looking for something intimate. Staff were knowledgeable about their menu and very helpful. A real treat on an otherwise dull Thursday!!

Hidden gem! Thai is my favourite cuisine and this does not disappoint. I love the tapas concept as I like trying lots of different dishes during a dining experience. A firm favourite, and we’ve been back many times. Thank you for a wonderful experience on each occasion! ❤️

I would recommend this place as the food was tasty. I didn't quite gel with the Thai tapas concept. The portion sizes are reasonable for the tapas concept, I had three dishes plus noodles and my wife the same. I don't think 2 dishes is sufficient. (They recommend 2 or 3 per person) Because of this it gets quite pricey as each dish is around 8/9 pounds each. The staff were lovely but overly attentive, once you've been checked on more than 4 times it starts to feel like they want you out, which was odd as it was literally empty when we sat down. I don't think it was malicious though, and I wouldn't let it put you off going. The menu is very wide in choice so everyone should be able to put together choices they enjoy. The building is lovely old and charming. The door is down the side passage and doesn't look like a front door but it is!

We did a monday lunch .we were the only people in the restaurant.the food was very nice but i dont understand why it wasnt hot at all ...maybe just the cold plates there was however a delay in the final dish which was piping hot as it should be ...the service was fast and the flavours and quality good.but why not hot? value for money excellent

Second time visiting this restaurant and both times have been excellent. Wonderful selection, it’s not run of the mill Thai food. Will definitely visit again on our next trip to York.

What a lovely little gem of a restaurant serving authentic Thai food at a bargain price !!! Wandering around York, looking for somewhere interesting for dinner we came across this tiny place. What a find. A warm welcome from the waitresses, two charming young ladies, and we were seated, although we hadn't booked. The surroundings are what you would probably call shabby chic. Just seating for 14 downstairs and the waitress told me they had seating for 18 upstairs. The food on the menu was amazingly cheap, with most dishes between £8-9. In fact the whole bill with Prawn crackers and dips, 3 main courses and rice and a bottle of wine only came to just over £60. But the cheap price belies the authentic flavour of all the food. Truly delicious.

We called in for lunch and had a selection of dishes between us. Portions aren't huge, but perfect for splitting between tqo and trying a variety of things. Every dish we had was delicious. If we lived locally, i think we'd try to work our way through the menu as there was lots more we wanted to tey.

Amazing food , just enough for two of us choosing 3 dishes each. Service was excellent. The door to the restaurant is tucked away in the alley way, so not in an obvious position. Decor was authentic, we had the table by the window upstairs which was nice .

Very hidden away restaurant in the heart of York, this was an real find! Amazing choice of fabulous dishes, all really tasty - especially talay tord, park tord, khao suay all excellent. Very quick service and yummy prawny prawn crackers!

I've been coming here for years, it's consistently fantastic, really great food, a bit cramped and the tables are close, but none-the-less a 5 start experience each visit and reasonably priced considering.

The food here is exceptional. A nice cosy atmosphere ideally located in York city centre. Unfortunately, the service we received on our last visit was poor. We were a group of 4 friends on Saturday night. We were given 1.5 hours for the table, but waited 20 mins for a drinks order to be taken on arrival. Throughout the sitting were constantly being rushed and told we didn’t have long left. Ordering was difficult due to the menu options not being numbered. Half of the food items we ordered didn’t arrive at the table, but then we were charged for them. The staff were hit and miss. All in all we left disappointed on the service front. It’s very competitive in York for food & drink establishments, service should be top notch. But the food and location in York is great.

This place has really friendly and attentive staff who gave us the table with the best view of outside despite it being far away from their serving station. The green curry and Tom Yum were amazing, full of flavour. We weren’t waiting long for dishes or drink orders. The interior is beautiful too with cute decorations and great views of York outside. Would visit again and recommend to anyone visiting York.

Food was excellent. Service was good. Waiting staff seemed a little snooty and we had to ask for the correct change when paying which was annoying. They then made a comment about removing the service charge which we'd already paid. Slightly odd

Super evening out with friends, lovely table and atmosphere. Food was delicious, my only negative is the tapas style makes for an expensive evening with most priced at £8.50, and portion sizes fairly small, (4 small grilled prawns for this price is too steep). Aside from this, great service, lighting, ambience, and tasty flavours.

Honestly, after reading all the glowing reviews it would be fair to say that our experience was disappointing. The staff were friendly and the service was good but the food was not as tasty as we expected from the reviews. Perhaps we just ordered the wrong thing?

The food was unbelievable: full of flavour. My mum and me were very lucky as we sat in the best table and enjoyed the whole experience. We went two days in a row because we loved it so much! Our recommendation is the duck spring rolls and traditional noodles.

We visited Phranakhon on the evening of the 4th August. It had been recommended to us earlier in the day. We are both vegetarian and the very helpful waitress guided us through the menu so that we had six dishes to share. Every dish was delicious from crisp tofu to Pad Thai. A good bottle of wine and pineapple fritters made for a superb anniversary treat

Honestly can’t recommend this gorgeous restaurant any higher! Having travelled Thailand extensively, it’s often hard for food to measure up, but this absolutely blew our minds. Incredible food, lovely staff, & a stunning building & atmosphere to top it off, what is not to love! 😍

Booked the day before. We then had several phone calls on the day to confirm we were still planning on going. On arrival the first door was chained off with a customer looking to be squeezed in and partly outside. We were taken upstairs where another couple were eating, There were 2 other tables for 2. Also in this small room was a large group (possibly a hen party) very loud and having a good time. We asked to be sat at the empty table furthest away, but were told that someone had just arrived and requested that table. We were sat so close to the group that we had to shout to be heard and could barely hear our waitress. After seating us the waitress took our drinks orders and expected us to know straight away what we wanted to eat from a very large menu she had literally just given us. By this time the noise from the group was so loud we couldn't even discuss what we wanted to eat. We left. We are not blaming the group and hope they had a great time, but we never should have been crammed into such a small room with them.

Fantastic setting and even better food. After several visits the quality of the cuisine has remained excellent and never fails to impress.

We used to come to this place for many years. We used to think it was one of the most authentic restaurants in York. High quality and very tasty food. Unfortunately this time the culinary experience was the opposite. All prawn dishes had the same taste, which was not a pleasant experience. The glass noodles were saturated in rose water and were inedible. The beef and beans were left untouched as the taste of coriander was so overpowering we could not eat it. The soup tasted like dishwater. The famous crunchy pork tasted of pig and not proper pork. It was very chewy and tasted only of oil. The dessert was straight forward disgusting. Unfrozen and then refrozen ice cream is a health hazard. Previously much loved by us, the pineapple fritters, tasted vile. The mango sorbet tasted like it was made out of fruit powder. Unfortunately we will not be returning and I cannot recommend the place at all. 0 stars. I’m not sure what happened to this once prestigious restaurant, which we would drive 40 miles to come and eat at.

Wife & I headed here on our trip to York. We ordered 6 tapas dishes and they were delicious. 2 of them (seabass and pork belly) were exceptionally good. Service was fantastic: attentive and friendly. This had been recommended to us by a friend and it was spot on. Really cool restaurant setting as well.

I have now been a couple of times and the restaurant never fails to impress. Good food and service in this quaint little restaurant. I would suggest that 2 or 3 plates will do for most people.

First time dining at this restaurant as I’m not from the area but it did come highly recommended from friends. Small little restaurant with so much food to choose from! You want to order everything because it sounds so good. We really did order a lot and there was nothing we didn’t enjoy. Everything was cooked as it should be. The service was excellent. Very friendly and welcoming. I wish they had a more extensive drinks list maybe some flavoured gins or something but other than that still absolutely 5 stars!

We ordered ten dishes plus a couple of rices between four of us, and that felt about right. It's not somewhere you longer - the food arrives quickly. Enjoyed everything, particularly the curries and the Legendary pork belly.

Had the best Thai food I have ever had. We were three people who got 3 dishes each + 2 portions of rice. There was plenty of food and we all got to try the different dishes. I couldn't fault the service and thought it was very reasonably priced. Will definitely be back! Edit, went back again a few months later and had another wonderful meal with the friendliest staff. Definitely a hidden gem in the centre of York!

Enjoyed a great lunch here with friends on Saturday. The food was delicious and there was plenty of choice. We were all impressed. The restaurant is cosy, clean and tidy. The staff were welcoming, friendly and efficient. I went for the set menu of two tapas and boiled rice. Yum.

Incredible Thai food. Wasn’t sure what to expect in York, but I walked out impressed. The tasting menu concept is a lot of fun cause you get to try out lots of different dishes I normally wouldn’t order. They also had a lunch special when we visited which came with two small plates and rice. Very filling and delicious. Well priced too. I’d highly recommend anyone looking for a flavorful lunch spot in the city.

After reading other reviews we thought we would give it a 'go' since my wife loves Thai food. Reception was good and we were seated quickly. We were advised that since we hadn't booked a table we would need to free table up for 8pm....

Charming restaurant with very tasty food and very friendly waitresses. The format of the dishes is called tapas because they are "small" portions of about 8-9 pounds, so that each person orders 2-3. The size is very well chosen and they can be shared perfectly between 2 people, so we ended up taking 5 for two people and it was abundant and varied. Me gustó todo mucho, pero los curries creo que son especialmente buenos. Mi favorito el Massaman Gai.

Fantastic Thai tapas restaurant. Visited Phranakhon in Leeds previously and was impressed by the choice of dishes and quality of the food. Decided to visit the York restaurant as a result and it’s even better. Really quirky premises with gorgeous food. So good. The spice level on this menu is high. I loved it. If you don’t like spice though, watch out. The chilli squid in Particular had a big hit. The concept is tapas, you order plates to share at the table. Don’t be trying to order separate dishes just for you - they’ll arrive in a random order, you’ll be confused and the people you’re with will think you’re a fool. Embrace the tapas approach, try a bit of everything and enjoy the range. The belly pork and duck spring rolls are also excellent. The beer is Chang. Change for the people. Booking is probably a good idea at the weekend. It’s only a small place so could fill up fast. The pineapple fritter is good 👀 Definitely coming here again. 🙌🏻

Very small portions hardly any meat in the beef and lamb dish only 2 king prawns in the yellow curry such a shame been going for a few years but not worth the money now !!

Out of 5 dishes that we ordered 2 were good, 3 was below average. The quantity of food is quite small and the prices are high for the quantity. But Great atmosphere and great service. Sorry 3/5 for this time.

An incredible culinary sensation. Some places get a lot of hype and don’t live up to it. This is the opposite: not enough hype for the taste and quality. I’ve had loads of Thai food around the world, including Thailand. This was one of the best we’ve had. Hands down. The Pad Thai is exquisite. The curries are delish! Husband loved the duck curry. Parang was so good. Everything was super tasty. And it’s a small cozy atmosphere. Try it! You won’t be sorry. I’ve been twice. Can’t wait to go again!

Food portions have got smaller , they are expensive really anyway , very overpriced , and toilets where dirty. Won’t be going again , came away still hungry but didn’t want to pay for anymore dishes.

Have been here a few times since it opened and had found it really tasty - enjoyed it but seems like the portion sizes have got smaller, for £8.95 a dish it was overpriced for what we got. Spending over £90 we were still hungry.

This is a nice little restaurant in a lovely old building, well located in York. Being a Tapas restaurant you are advised to order 2 or 3 dishes each plus sides (rice etc) to share. Three of us had 8 dishes between us to share....
