Absolutely awful ......poor service, had run out of salt (unbelievable), chips were terrible, sizzling duck plate in black been and green pepper sauce was burnt and hardly any duck, no green peppers but did have red ones in it and a tablespoon of sauce, squid rings were made from reformed squid which you get very cheap at cash and carry. Poor service, poor quality. If you like good Chinese food, go elsewhere. On the plus side the squid rings and chips were refunded but I would never have paid for them anyway!

Excellent food and excellent service by the young ladies working there …chicken satay and the beef in black bean sauce were amazing 🤩 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Parking lot had few cars it was early dinner, upon entering staff was attentive, the restaurant decorated nicely. Menu had tons of options. Priced reasonably. I will be back when I return to visit.

Food 10 out of 10 and Service 10 out of 10! Waited 30 mins for a table because we didn't book, but for a place that is so popular, the wait was nothing at all.

We had a wonderful date at Sidmouth - everything was delicious and our server was funny, thoughtful, and super helpful. We look forward to going back!

I visited for lunch as they were advertising a 2 course for £7.90, which on the face of it, represented value for money. It was a little after midday and I was the only one in there. I ordered chicken and sweetcorn soup, chicken curry and a pot of tea. The soup arrived fairly quickly, and was piping hot. I asked for some salt and pepper and the waitress managed to find a salt cellar without any salt in it. When she bought over the tea, the milk looked decidedly watery. I was informed that it was powdered milk. I declined any tea or coffee. The main course, a chicken curry with fried rice arrived and, on the face of it , looked ok. Why o why, do restaurants bring food to the table on cold plates? As a consequence, the food was cold in less than a minute. I know it was only £7.90, but, value for money? Not a bit.

Fair pricing for the amount of food you get. Taste was really good too. Family friendly and excellent service. Great experience overall!

My family and I went for the first time tonight. Our server was great, he helped us decide on what to eat and which sauces to try. The food itself was incredible. Seriously the best meal I’ve had in awhile. We cannot wait to go back.

Egg fried rice brown and burnt. Salt and pepper squid dried up, rubbery and very disappointing. Chicken curry thrown away as meat gelatinous and an all brown dish with no originality, Won ton soup gloopy and totally unpleasant to eat. Staff lovely but that’s the only positive (plus the prawn crackers but it is almost impossible to ruin these). Last time I was in was four years ago, had hoped for an improvement but no.

Solid spot for Chinese food! Came here with a party of 8. We got seated promptly. The service was great. The menu has a wide variety of food. I would definitely come back when I'm craving Chinese food.

One of my favorite restaurants in Sidmouth! The servers are so nice and they really know about the menu. The food is just perfect. Even vegetarian option and dishes with meat.

The food was terrible; mixed veg chow mein was mainly just noodles drowned in soya sauce, not a single chinese vegetable in it, just a bit of carrott and mushroom plus 1 pea! The prawn toast had 1 prawn and just tasted like oily fried bread. Just awful! The young waiters were nice, they asked how the food was so I said it was not nice; they apologised but I was still charged full price and not a word from the chef or management! Don't go there!

Sat down to a sticky table so moved to another. Food was awful. Ordered 3 dishes and all were soaked in soy sauce and oily, including the fried rice with egg. None had any distinctive flavour. In fact all virtually tasted same. Maybe it was all that soy sauce. Not to mention the small servings for the price! The roast pork was supposed to include ginger - couldn’t taste any and pork wasn’t roasted. Have often had roast pork at other restaurants and there’s a big difference. Garlic beef Korean style - couldn’t taste any garlic and beef was tough. Bad experience other than waiter who was a friendly fellow and served to please.

Called in here for an early tea whilst on holiday. There was a mix up with our order, quickly rectified by the young waiter. We had set menu B - the food was delicious and there was plenty. There wasn’t much atmosphere but it was 5pm so not very busy. They started getting busy with telephone orders so I think it is a popular place. If I was down this way again I would eat here or definitely have a takeaway. :)

This place has a 1 star for hygiene. Dirty toilets, sticky tables, dirty floor, goodness knows what the kitchens are like. We should have realised that everyone else knew because we sat on our own for lunch. Food pretty rubbish. There are so many nice places to eat in Sidmouth but this isn't one of them and wouldn't dream of returning.

Went to PHOENIX Asian Garden Restaurant for the first time a week ago. Very clean and welcoming atmosphere. I had a great time dining here.

Recently saw this place online and decided to go try it with some friends last night. It was amazing. The food was fresh and the sauces were so good. No doubt will be coming again.

We have eaten in the restaurant and we use the take away regularly. I’m surprised of the negative reviews as we love the food from here, it’s always delicious and hot. The staff are friendly and the food gets delivered timely. Highly recommend!

Very disappointed starter was just ok but not good, both our main courses had to be sent back, the premises where very run down, and not clean a big big disappointment. A small adjustment to the bill did not compansate for bad food.

We picked up a takeaway from Phoenix on a Friday evening. The staff are always polite, friendly and efficient. All the food we ordered tasted great and I would highly recommend the Beef Chow Mein (it is the best around)!

Went a couple of evenings ago, not a lot of people in there as it was quite early, the young guy took my order and the bought the heating stand for my table, food came quite quick and seeings it had only been open a little while the food was either over cooked or not fresh, also nobody had lit the tea lights in my stand so my food soon became cold, also loud banter was continuous from the kitchen which was amusing.

Visited here around 21.00! Think they were just recovering from a very busy period, just after the air show! Staff were pretty disoriented but were still trying their best and still polite and friendly! A mistake on the order not reaching the kitchen but once it did the food arrived quickly ! But when we go the food home it was maybe the best Chinese food we have had in a long long time ! So well done we did enjoy our experience and the food was excellent ! Those guys who worked that Friday night after the air show ! You deserve a pay rise you handled a difficult situation really good (their till system had gone down so orders were not printing in the kitchen and manual bills had to be done) thanks

It’s a shame really, as this place has got the monopoly in Sidmouth for Chinese restaurants.It’s only average at its very best.Until they get opposition in town, and they have to up their game,I would suggest you all avoid this place.There’s really nothing more I can say.

We were at Sidmouth folk festival week and popped in to get a take away. The service was fast and friendly and the food was lovely and there was lots of it. We couldn't actually eat it all. Three dishes would have fed 3 or 4. Well worth a visit.

Visited here earlier this evening (01/07/19) after travelling several hours. Decor was in traditional red with brick walls and wooden furniture. Piano music was playing in the background (ok for us). Had mixed veg soup starter which was packed with veg and it's fairly thick, mild and smooth in consistency. Followed by Beancurd Szechuan and side order of chips. Really spicy, flavoursome and filling. Other half had hot and spicy soup starter (fairly mild) followed by Beef Szechuan. The food was piping hot and served efficiently because it wasn't very busy. The hostess was polite and professional in manner. The only minor issue was she forgot to supply our drinks (only diet coke and jasmine) prior to having our soups served. Very satisfying though.

Went with my family the place was empty with us being to only table occupied which does not explain our huge wait for food and then some of said food was forgotten from the order. Then once the food did come the portions were tiny especially with the high prices with a small bowls of chicken fried rice (about half the size of a usual plastic container) costing £8. Aswell as the the toilets being in serious need of a deep clean and the soap being dish soap in a soap bottle. Over all I will not be visiting again.

Service was indifferent portions were small and part of our order forgotten. All in all a pretty bad meal. When the waiter was told we thought the portions did not deserve the £8 cost all we got was a shrug of the shoulders. We were the only table occupied in the restaurant so couldn’t understand why the service was so poor. We certainly won’t to be going back.

This was a lucky find. The food was fabulous and the service was brilliant. Callam served us, he was very helpful & knowledgeable. It was very good value for money. I definitely recommend it.

We get a takeaway for thefamily almost every week ,they serve a very good salt and pepper dry ribs ,and if you ask them to pep up the Singapoore Fried Rice it is terrific.My wife has vegetarian dishes from here too and they are very good. You can sit and have a Chinese draught lager while you wait too which is nice.Pleasant if slightly scatty but fun staff.

We love Chinese food and have frequented Chinese restaurants in Chinatowns in various big cities across the world. Sidmouth is not Chinatown and it should not be expected that the food be completely authentic. We had the peking duck with pancakes to start which was very good and by far the best part of the meal. The main dishes we had were typical Chinese take away quality. They tasted okay and filled our stomach but were definitely nothing special. I would return but just for the duck.

I am writing this as much to appeal to the owners as speak to prospective customers. From what I could see when we ate there recently, there is a lot of work still to be done in meeting expected standards of hygiene and cleanliness. The place could be very nice and the owners can cook, so why do they not get to grips with the basics. It could be so much better.

Tofu was overcooked, barely any other ingredients with the sweet and sour. Vegetable curry was bland and was mainly bamboo shoots and water chestnuts. Very disappointing but served a purpose. Will not be returning

Went there the other day when it was very busy and the staff told us the wait would be 20 minutes for food and that service may be slow. The warning was much appreciated but not needed as service was very quick as well as the food. I ordered the szechuan chicken and i have to say it was one of the best ive ever tasted. Staff were very friendly and although they were young they were very polite and couldnt do enough for us. Will definitely be coming back next summer

Booked a table, arrived, nothing for 14minutes, then offered to take our order. Asked if we wanted the three courses bought out at the same time. Dirty plates, forgot to light the dish warmer on the table, ineffective staff, average food, bland surroundings, didn’t ever ask us if we wanted more drinks. 2 hours for a three course meal. Avoid like the plague this place only deserves to fold just to stop embarrassing themselves. £90 for the meals for 3 people so not budget and therefore marked down even more - I would give half a star if possible.

Very surprised to read recent reviews after visiting this restaurant we had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The food was very tasty and fresh, the Peking duck starter was lovely and variety of main courses we ordered were very nice especially the ribs and the chow me in. Many thanks to the very nice hard working young lady who served us.

Awful food. The waiting staff were pretty much prepared for us to complain, offering a 20% discount before the complaint was out of my mouth. Imagine your Nan coming Cantonese food. That's what you'll get here. Just awful.

I wouldn't say I am an expert when it comes to Chinese cuisine but I have eaten at enough Chinese restaurants to have an opinion.

Went back again 16th June. Again very good food with very helpful staff. Great value for money. Recommend a visit. Not sure how staff would cope if busy but can’t complain at all about anything. Went early evening with only a few tables occupied. Lots of takeaways being ordered and same staff dealing with this as well. Will return.

We were staying in our caravan at the Salcombe Regis site, good food, polite staff, well priced and with delivery at the time we wanted - can’t really ask for more

My visit was for lunch. I was meeting a group of people I didn't know. Everyone chose the cheap option and I didn't feel I could be different. The 2 courses were only £6:90, so I my expectation weren't high. I was prepared for a small meal at that price but unprepared for such low standards of cooking. Squid that had been cooked at too high a temperature, pork ribs that were just about warmed up and tasted stale .Others in the group had various battered meats etc. As far as I could see they were over cooked and very hard. The person opposite me and the one next to me had to leave their's as they could not drive a fork through them! Our orders had to be taken twice, the "waiter" hadn't written things down correctly. He said he normally did the cooking but when asked what Kung Po was he didn't know! Now add to all this the room was very, very cold, serveral poeple kept their coats on. At the end of the meal the owner, in kitchen whites, came to the table.How he had the brass neck to show his face I do not know He must have a very thick skin, I didn't speak to him I just left.

My wife & I had the set lunch and it was really good, with nice ribs for starters, then beef/chicken chow mien followed by banana/pineapple fritter. Food all very tasty and served with a smile, all for £7-95 inc tea or coffee. Recommended! We'll be back. Only downside ...it was quite cold in the restaurant, though they put the fire on when we pointed this out. Thanks.

The decor, layout and menu, make make you wonder what it will be like, but for standard English Chinese food it was good. In fact the ribs where particularly good examples, and nice to see yuk sung lettuce wraps. The guy waiting was also very polite and attentive, good service.

Food is delicious especially the thai style chicken and egg fried rice, great atmosphere and very polite and easy to talk to staff who couldnt do more to assist me.

We have visited the Phoenix several times over the last few months as we only live a short distance away, and service is usually provided by several young people and the food is reasonable, not memorable. However, last night the food arrived very quickly and was only warm, and of very poor quality, obviously just reheated precooked food. The green prawn thai curry was more onions than prawns in a very thin unappetising looking sauce, the chicken thai was rubbery and in a congealed sauce and the vegetable chow mein was about 90% noodles and 10% vegetables. The rice was basically one lump. There only appeared to be one very young girl serving, very casually dressed, and there seemed to be little point in trying to express our dissatisfaction to her. This place has deteriorated seriously since the summer when it was busier and is now very disappointing. We will be using the takeaway up the road in future.

My Parents in Law seem to like this place or more accurately they like the Chinese owners. It is a bit worrying however when the Chinese owners only walk in to the restaurant at closing time-the chef and waiter were both English! Frankly a poor effort at what Chinese food should be. My Hot and Sour soup was disappointing, the beef red curry pale and anaemic, the Singapore noodles dry. Sweet and sour dishes were not bad though. Zero atmosphere although it was sunday lunch time. Not sure if there is another Chinese in the Sidmouth area but if not it is probably worth a drive to find it.

Took my daughter and family here for birthday meal. Staff very attentive and answered questions about dishes but food was disappointing.

absolutely brilliant, started off with the 1/4 duck which was beautiful (highly recommend), then for the main i ordered the Kung Po chicken which once again was to die for! and lastly my dessert was the banana fitter with vanilla ice cream which is something i wouldnt normally chose but the texture and flavour was exquisite. The evening was made special by the very charming waiter with blonde hair.

This place does a two course lunch special for £6.90. The food was good the young man front of house was both attentive and helpful. My husband had two courses I decided to finish my meal with a Pineapple Fritter we both had Jasmine tea and the bill was still under £15. Brilliant.

We had a great meal at Phoenix. The menu was varied and prices were reasonable. Service was quick and our waiter was friendly and could offer advice on dishes to choose from. We would definitely return here.

Although I have had Phoenix's takeaway on several occasions I realised I have never left a review. credit where credit is due their meal for two (which we always have) at £21 is amazing value for the food you receive, it consists of Peking spare ribs, Hong Kong style sweet & sour chicken, beef in black bean, stir fried mixed vegetables and 2 portions of egg fried rice. We always have a bit extra for the following day. Unlike many other Chinese takeaways/restaurants everything tastes different and is not smothered in a bright red sickly sauce. Always a pleasant welcome when picking up the food and when phoning through the order. Well done Phoenix

Ate here last night after walking past it numerous times. Really tasty food, nearly as good as our local back in Oxford. The staff were really friendly and coped well at on a busier night than usual. Price was really good and the portions were generous. Would highly recommend.

Booked the day before but when we arrived we were not seated in the restaurant part so that was a bit disappointing as it was first visit. Staff were friendly & helpful but not very efficient. Our table heater had not been lit. When the food arrived it wasn't very hot. My tonic water was not very cold & had no ice or lemon in it. Because I have recently moved here, would probably want to visit Phoenix quite often, so I have just picked up on a few little things which they could improve on.

As always, the food is good quality here but customer service is a little slack. It seems as soon as they get busy, they can't cope which lets down the general feel of the place. We were served promptly enough but others were told that there was no room for them when, clearly, there was! We ordered a liqueur coffee which wasn't forthcoming so left a little disappointed. Come on phoenix, up your game or you will lose customers!

Most of the dishes weren't bad but my sister ordered chicken curry which had hardly any chicken but mainly consisted of large chunks of onion, which wasn't obvious when the dish came as it was covered in the sauce. Not great as it would have given her an upset stomach if she had eaten that much onion in one go. The bill was something like £42.70 so we asked if there would be money off in view of the fact we had paid for a meat dish but there clearly wasn't much meat in it, but were told no, even if the bill had been £40 it would have been a gesture on their part. As per a previous poster, they obviously don't give refunds if there is a problem with any of the order so be warned, and don't order the chicken curry! Personally I wouldn't recommend it because customer service is clearly not their priority.....

I was visiting Sidmouth for the weekend and i found myself with some spare time and a craving for some Chinese food. Firstly, I noticed the Silver King and instantly noticed that it was only a takeaway; however, i also wanted to enjoy a few drinks with my meal. I later found the Phoenix Garden Restaurant. From the moment i walked in the door i was greeted by polite well dressed staff. Although, it was clearly a busy day they were still able to attend to my needs at a quick pace. I got my drinks within 5 minutes and later my starters. I had meat pancake rolls for starter which came with a dip of sweet chilli sauce. Later for my mains I had Singapore Rice Noodles and Kung Po chicken. All came out promptly and still steaming hot. Again this was very well made and beautifully presented.

What a lovely restaurant. Fabulous food, service fantastic and staff more than helpful . and friendly. Went on a Saturday night and returned on Sunday night to find the restaurant closed. Very disappointed. Would definitely return.

We ordered take away from here and both the Singapore chow mein and chicken chow mein were really dry. Plus side, we didn't have to wait long to collect and it wasn't very expensive
