Would not recommend - very chewy crispy beef, prawn smelled off in special fried rice spoiling the rest of the dish. Not worth the £36 we paid, Sainsbury’s meal deal offer better quality. Can you?

I moved down to Surrey July last year, from London! I say this as in all my 40+ years of living there, I've never had such consistent and tasty chinese food as this restaurant! Always hot, always tasty, never greasy and always get a large free bag of prawn crackers too! 10/10!!

I use this place every time I visit Ottery, I come from rugby which has many many Chinese takeaways and I wish even one of them was half a good as this one.

Used to eat here in 1998 during school, would get the "China Chef Special" and it was amazing but I didn't see it anymore, used to sit and watch Jerry Springer while eating before heading to class, Went back recently and was super disappointed

Having done in France a professional training, eons ago, in Restaurant and Hotel trades as well as nearly twenty years in private PA/Host and customer service plus commerce, 12 years of it in the USA, I know about judging if a business or ommerce is good to very good or not. China Chef has been doing their foods since 1982 and it is THE BEST value/quality I have seen in Devon! A 10 on my coolometer and it goes up to...10! Merci China Chef!

We ordered Mongolian lamb and it was inedible...no vegetables as advertised, just a tub of salty fat, absolutely horrible! We won't return to this place.

I ordered beef rice and beef curry and I am no means very fussy when it comes to take away and I don't ever leave reviews but the meal I attempted to just eat was disgusting. The meat was slimy and the rice was stodgy and it made me feel sick when trying to eat it. I'm so disappointed and what a waist of just over a tenner. I will not be going back ever again.

This was one of the worse meals I have had in several years, parts were still raw like the batter on the chicken pieces for the sweet and sour. The sweet and sour source was like very runny water with little taste. The egg fried rice was so stoggie it had no taste and lumpy. The mushroom and chicken was I cold just as if the hot mushrooms had been added to cold chicken and a stock which I could not identify. Will I return for another take away, no.

I only needed a quick all in one meal. I chose roast pork fried rice and was impressed with the taste and quality of ingredients. Great value for money.

Just got a takeaway was dreadful fried rice was mushy overcooked, crispy shredded beef was stodgy and tasted like pickles, chow mein was more stodge and the rest was much better will not be going back there could if last Chinese in Devon yuk

Always go here rather than You and Me. Wonderful Singapore noodles, chicken balls and sesame prawn toast. Plenty of it and always hot. Thanks!

I’ve had some bad Chinese food in my life but this somehow has managed to top it. Went in to order, the person who took the order was rude and zero knowledge of customer service. The chicken was foul and everything was soggy. And on top of that we had to wait 45 minutes for the order to be done. Even tho we ordered for 2 people. Oh and it’s very over priced for terrible quality food. Will definitely not be going back there, even if it was the only Chinese available !

I don't think so then funny how when you live somewhere with limited takeaway it becomes over priced and rubbish

We had a takeaway from China Chef whilst on holiday in the area, we had already had a takeaway from 'You and Me' the other Chinese takeaway in Ottery but we preferred this one. The food was cooked to order whilst we waited and was fresh. The food was tasty, good quality and the portion sizes really generous. We enjoyed our takeaway.

This is the first time we have used this takeaway and we definitely won't be returning. We ordered lemon chicken which came in a jelly, the consistency was very different to ones we've had before. Rice was a dark color suggesting oil was old & the sauces were very thick and gloopy. Considering it was quite expensive we were very disappointed.

Crispy chicken? More like soggy chicken. Probably warmed up from the night before. This has always been an OK Chinese, nothing special, but tonights offering is the last straw. Will be avoiding like the plague from now on, food is disappointing average at best

We've just moved to the town. You and Me was closed tonight, so thought id try china chef. I so regret it. We had 2 types of chow mein, a rice dice and 2 types of chicken sweet and sour dishes. None of them tasted like they should and we threw the most of it in the bin. If we are not ill tomorrow i will be surprised. I am even more surprised that there was a queue when i walked in (usually a good sign on a sunday night). The 'chef' who took my order was wearing a filthy apron, the place looks very tired and quite dirty and the manner of the service was quite rude. All a sign that there is little passion and a lack of pride in what they do. But my biggest compliant is that the food was simply disgusting and the worst takeaway i have ever eaten. AVOID

Best chinese ever! Never had a bad one!!

We have always enjoyed our takeaway from here,but to night the food sent to the bin!! The plum sauce tasted of sweet and sour and all of the food was in a brown gravy.not pleasant at all. We were so disappointed having sung your praises,now nearly £30 in the bin we will not be returning...... Maybe you have changed your chef? I would not recommend you to anyone after tonight's experience and waste of money.

Very popular take away. Food was good quality and hot, with free prawn crackers on our £26 spend. Highly recommended over Golden Pond in Rockbeare.

Excellent service and the best Chinese around Sidmouth

We always get our chinese from here and we will never go else where. Everytime it is tasty, fresh and not greasy. The service is friendly and quick. Reasonably priced too.

Good food never had anything to complain about

This is our favourite one in the area. Over the years we have had many meals from here. Had probably one or two orders which were missing items but that would probably add up to less than 1%, of the meals we have had. Very good quality food and nice and handy for us to pick up.

Absolutely the beast Chinese takeaway meal I have had, delicious tasty food well presented and fresh, I wouldn’t consider anywhere else.

Definitely the best Chinese in the area! We go here often and love their Singapore chow mein and sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style. We've ordered from them when we haven't had time to cook or have family visiting and want to relax.

In East Devon, the quality of Chinese Take-Aways, particularly those in Honiton, is often rather poor, which led us to try the China Chef Take-Away in Ottery St. Mary just a 15 minute drive away, and what a good find it was. China Chef is just a short walk from the free Sainsbury's Car-Park in Hind Street, their premises are clean and tidy, and placing our order by telephone was straightforward. The extensive Menu contains some interesting variations of Duck and Lamb dishes, but we stuck to our "usual" as we wanted a direct comparison. The portions were generous with a good helping of meat. The Sweet & Sour Pork Balls were huge and nice and crispy. Our Chicken Chow Mein & Chicken with Green Peppers & Black Bean were both good and very tasty. A free bag of Prawn Crackers and a Photo Calendar was a nice surprise. Another good feature is that all major credit/debit cards are accepted here.

Ordered a few items, one of which was Singapore chow mein, I specifically requested no sea food due to allergies and was informed that the item would be cooked without shrimp (as opposed to removing them). We also ordered food from the local fish and chip shop for other members of the family so that we could all eat together. On getting back and dishing up the food we found lots of shrimp in the chow mein!!! I called to inform them and was asked if I was sure it contained sea food, informed the chap I was looking at them, he then asked if I was sure, that bothered me as he implied I was mistaken. Then finally said I needed to bring it back and if it contained sea food he would replace it!!!! Told them the other food would go cold but they insisted that I should keep it warm in the oven or reheat it. Really? This was YOUR mistake and as a customer I don't like my integrity being questioned. After a 20 minute round trip the other food looked undesirable and the replacement chow mein was scrutinised instead of being enjoyed!!! But they did give a token goodwill gesture.. A bag of prawn crackers!!

One star because they did at least provide food. Only half the food though. We live a way out from ottery and it is a half hour round trip. On return home we had the rice/ chips/ sauce part of the order but the meat element was missing. Apparently their mix up, they agreed, on ringing. The rest of the order we had paid for was still there, not given to us. (good eh?) They would not replace the chips etc that would be stone cold after the 45 minute delay caused by themselves. Their best suggestion was the microwave. Nice. Microwave chips and warmed up rice, no food hazard there! Also despite their admissions of fault, no apology. Poor in the extreme does not begin to describe it.

We have been searching for a good Chinese since we moved to Devon 6 months ago, and pretty much given up until we found this one.....Best Chinese we have ever had, you can tell its freshly prepared...... Prawn toast is packed with prawns, best chicken balls I have tasted.....Well worth travelling 7 miles 😊😊

Best chicken balls in town, best curry sauce in East Devon. Absolutely banging. Lovely chap behind the counter always polite and welcoming. Highly reccommend to all.

My local go-to chinese takeaway - always friendly and always tasty.

Absolutely wonderful. Recommend the Manchurian Lamb. Discovered them when on holiday in October. Will be returning in April specifically to be near China Chef!
