The Golden House in East Devon

Used to be good restaurant, probably the best round here. Since change of ownership the food gone downhill fast. New owners dont know how to cook the food or give a $#!+ about it, many chinese takeaways are now sold to people from mainland china as previous generation owners are at retirement age and their kids dont really want to work in the food business so they just sell it to one of their workers which is the case here, the mainland people in china cook food that are very spicy and taste quite a bit different from chinese/ Cantonese food outlets we know. Chinese people are proud of their nation and the reason you never see mainland chinese cusine on any food outlet is it is different kind of food and is less popular. Staff is rude especially the lady owner, who talks like they gave you the food for free and dont be fooled by the former boss showing up and serving you he is most likely there to disguise that the business is sold.

We had spent the day at Lyme and going to the restaurant was an impromptu decision. I was concerned that the restaurant was empty apart from one family. On a Saturday night this rang warning bells. However, our experience was excellent. The restaurant is very basic - quite literally tables and chairs although the architecture of the room is pleasing, boasting an ingle nook fireplace. We had the mixed hors d’oeuvres ( extra sesame prawn toast provided rather than ribs as we don’t like those), sweet and sour chicken and egg fried rice. The food had a finesse and lightness and was excellent. The service was attentive and could not do enough to make sure that our experience was an enjoyable one. I would definitely return again in the future.

So disappointed with my salt and pepper pork tonight. Nothing like the dish I have enjoyed for years-it was gristly spare ribs chopped up, dry and tasteless -awful. Golden House if you don’t have the ingredients or staff to maintain standards please say so instead of taking customers money and expect no one to notice!

Went here as other places not doing food. Staff friendly and welcoming. Food was nice. We had a bottle of Blush wine which they charged £22.50 for and only £6.99 a bottle. Was bit more pricy than expected..

Had tea meal as no where else open in Axminster on Sunday night nice enough lady serving and food ok But to charge 15.00 over top off buy price You gotta say charged way to much for Tat drink.

Ordered takeaway, arrived one hour later to collect, only to be told that there would be a little delay, waited 45 minutes more and gave up, asked for a refund and left. Always had delays with this place, but tonight was something else!!! Very rude owner telling customers that she is cancelling their orders!!!

Take out food here is absolutely lovely.

To be honest I don't understand why this place has a bad reputation. Had ribs for starters, very meaty and plenty of flavor. Followed by Satay beef and egg fried rice both excellent.

Been going here for 13 years and it has generally been fairly good but in the past 3 years or so the standards have slipped significantly. In particular we ordered salt and pepper king prawns which were completely inedible - pre-cooked prawns re-heated and dry and way over salty. Have given them the benefit of the doubt too many times now. Great shame that they don’t seem to care any more.

Lovely place, it was an impromptu dinner because the initial place we planned on going was closed, this turned out to be great and fantastic night, no flaws at all.

I would save your money, absolutely shocking food, I'd rather die from starvation than eat there rubbish, I wouldn't eat there food if it was free,totally bad,I actually can't put into words omg.the place should be closed down.

Just had chaw main as an eat out, absolutely never again, it was half cold and gross to be frank, save you cash and try lucky house, i wouldn't of fed it to my dog. Sorry guys.

Extremely disappointed with the restaurant, the tables had no clothes on, the menu wasn't appealing to look at and the older waitress was rude trying to tell us where to put our phones and how to eat our food. (Younger waitress very polite) Having not been here for a while ( when it was popular, friendly and the food was amazing) we won't be back 😒

Twice recently we have had takeaway from here & both times we both had upset stomachs for 3 days afterwards. We won't be buying from here again.

I got a take away from here last year and whilst it wasn’t amazing, it was ok so ordered here again as reviews are better than the other chineses. Well the quality was not great at all. I’ll go dish by dish…. Half duck was super fatty and on the undercooked side, no crispy skin at all. The cucumber and spring onion was a tiny tub, the same you get with the 1/4 duck. The hoisin sauce and pancakes were decent. I had ordered extra pancakes as usually we need it but here, the meet was so bad that we only managed to finish one pack of six pancakes. King prawn chow mein, one of the better dishes, good flavours, loads of huge king prawns so good value. Stir fried vegetables - avoid! No flavour, soggy and mostly bean sprouts. Young chow fried rice - waste of money. It doesn’t have the young chow flavour at all. Just regular egg fried rice with dry meat and shrimp. Egg fried rice - no actual pieces of egg and doesn’t have that wok flavour but it’s edible Crab meat sweetcorn soup - real crabmeat but not much of the meat. The soup flavour was quite nice but way too gloopy for my liking. Hot sour soup - not very spicy, flavour ok, shrimps were not fresh. Sweet sour chicken balls - good, batter not too heavy. Unusual sauce, I liked it but not all my kids did. Chicken ginger spring onion - one of the better dishes, gloopy again but flavour was decent. Clean chicken meat pieces. King prawn in garlic source - not nice, looked like porridge. Unbelievably gloopy, with lots of mushrooms. The prawns were large but I didn’t like the gloopy source. King prawn Szechuan - prawns were battered, source quite sweet and not very spicy, tasted similar to the sweet and sour sauce. Singapore rice noodle - ok, quite dry and flavour not special. Edible I won’t be going back.

We have to order takeaway every summer when we visit Lyme Regis, never let us down.

Never had a bad meal here. Service is friendly. Atmosphere is let down by the lack of people using the restaurant (opting for take-away instead) - as we are often the only table in use, but that's not the restaurants fault.

Came here on Friday evening, and the restaurant was empty. I’m not sure why as the food was excellent! The waitress from Singapore had fabulous customer service and took the time to recommend what to order. The price was very reasonable including drinks. We will be back!

Absolutely DELICIOUS food. Yes, it can be rather expensive, but I personally believe it's worth it.

Decided to have takeaway for a birthday meal as away on holiday, prices are dearer than what was used to, but the quality and taste was well worth the extra and i certainly didn't mind, enjoyed it so much we decided to do it again a few nights later, on are last night, totally recommend to any one, the only thing I will say is, it says cash on the online order system which is great and it gives you a time slot, but option to pay by card was also offered when collecting 😀

Went in there last night just for some chicken balls with sweet sour sauce staff were nice but food was terrible the chicken balls were dripping with Grease and the sauce taste and smelled like a bottle of vinegar first and last time I’ll visit

We ordered take away and the food was very nice with portions big enough to feed us. We had 3 different noodles chow mein and dim sum. We also received prawn crackers as an extra. Thank you

Food lovely but disappointing customer service .. called in day to check opening hours .. called 40 mins before closing time to be told already shut. So left trying to make food at 10pm unexpectedly. No apology.

Visited with friends on a Monday evening, an all round great experience. Friendly staff and attentive service, lovely food, we had the dim-sum, seafood wrap and squid starters which were all really tasty and a variety of meat, seafood and vegetarian main courses which again were really lovely. We all agreed one of the best Chinese meals we've eaten out for a long time and we would definitely return.

Very poor. On getting order home two dishes were incorrect even though checked by person at desk. Would normally go back and change but staying 9 miles away with a family we just had to make do. So paid for chicken got chips. Paid for egg fried rice, got plain rice burnt Noodles were horrible, oily and burnt. If you are holidaying in the area avoid as I think they rely on you not complaining. Don't believe the reviews or the overpriced menu. Really wished we hadn't bothered

Good food,friendly atmosphere and great service.

This is the best Chinese takeaway I've had in years. Everything was freshly cooked - vegetables were crunchy and everything we had was tasty, which included meat, seafood and vegetables, without the sauces being overloaded by sugar as is usual. In fact I couldn't taste sugar at all, just the food itself!

Visiting friend's treat for us, takeaway, ordered online, paid in cash upon collection. Superb food, well presented, bang on time, delicious although quite pricey.

this is the most expensive chinese take away i have ever been too , the food is good but overpriced, nearly £35 for 3 dishes and 2 curry sauce , under £25 in my local in Bristol for the same food .

Have been using Golden House for around 35 years, which has been very consistent for the first 30. In recent years it's been a little hit and miss. Mostly okay though. Ordered takeaway online and collected on time. Unfortunately one egg fried rice was missing. Not the first time this has happened but decided to email them this time to mention it, hoping for a reply and resolution. Nothing heard 4 days later. Aside from the lack of rice, the meal itself was really salty, specifically the special pancake rolls and the curry. And this is coming from someone who likes salt on their food. All in all, a combination of poor customer service (a simple reply), as well as missing rice and the overly salted food has initiated this review.

I have ordered a Chinese this evening, the chow mien tasted burnt and super salty to the point where 2 hungry young boys couldn’t eat any of it. An expensive meal that was overpriced (happy to pay) providing the food tastes good. Awful won’t be eating there again

Delicious food, large menu, accomodating to my requests. Order could have been taken quicker but we were hungry! Same for drinks. Could have been improved with some back ground music but we enjoyed our evening and got doggy bags for the food we didn't eat.

What a lovely little restaurant, food was fantastic and the staff very friendly. We were the only ones in the restaurant, which was unbelievable, but the takeaway was very busy. I would recommend to any of my friends, this was the best oriental restaurant I have ever been. Thank you for our lovely chat and for the gorgeous food.

We had a pleasant enough family meal, the waitress and staff were friendly and helpful. One of our group chose duck with plum sauce, which came with pineapple, which was the predominant flavour, apart from that, it's a good quality local Chinese restaurant offering both eat in and take away.

Lovely food but decor is bare and feels cold.

This is only the second time I have used this Chinese in a few years ( takeway), as I do not live in Axminster. Exactly the same as the first time. The food is great but the portions are far too small. You really do not get your money's worth compared to other takeways. They really need to give customers value for money, as they are not cheap.

Tasty food, get takeaway from here about once a month. A little on the expensive side, but most of the dishes are worth it.

Incredible Chinese restaurant and take away, cannot fault the place. They have recently introduced a new menu with a veggie section (veggie chicken, duck, ribs etc) and it is delicious! First time I’ve seen this offered at a Chinese locally and I was so impressed with how good it is! My fav Chinese by a mile 💙

Superb food and they will create veggie versions of most dishes if you ask. Lovely atmosphere and excellent, attentive service. We sat for 2.5 hours for a family meal for 9 people and weren't rushed or hassled, proper hospitality. 10/10

Pretty appalled really and won't be going back. Ordered a takeaway yesterday and have spent the whole night in the bathroom on the loo and still now during the day. Like someone laced the meal with laxative. Avoid!

Had a fantastic meal out at Golden House. Waitress was very attentive and friendly, portion sizes were very good and food delicious. Best Beef in Black Bean Sauce I've had in a very long time. Also a huge range for the vegetarians and vegans in our group, which tasted excellent. Would happily return again

Had a few good meals here in the past but tonights takeaway was really poor. The prawn toast was literally wilting & soggy, the beef in green pepper so peppery it was barely edible & the chicken w oyster sauce just tasted horrible. It will be a long time until we revisit the Golden House, if ever.

The Website is easy to use. Very clear. Having had several takeaways over the several months I have experienced nothing but prompt service with a smile.
