Run by a passionate young couple with a good knowledge of the history of the place. They've been there themselves for 18 years. We had haddock and chips to share, which was perfectly cooked and full of flavour and the best curry sauce I've had to date! Good portions and lovely service. Lots of places in the town to sit and eat with a view too. Would recommend 👌

The shop was full of acrid smoke when we were there for a takeaway. Fish was ok but dripping in fat that didn't taste great, but we were really disappointed with the chips.they were awful ,over cooked dry and a strange dark colour ,they tasted like reheated oven chips. Really disappointed .wont go again

Visited there Friday 30th June at 18:00. Food was greasy n was given wrong size of chips asked for large and got given a small ! that or they are really tight for the price - all the tables were empty and it was freezing ! I said if I was to pay money in tip jar could I use them ? No - I was told ! table service is a different price I offered to pay for table and clean up but was still told no so had to go sit out in the cold being attacked by seagulls !not the shops fault but indoors was empty!! Asked for a large pie n chips n curry sauce- £10.50 - needless to say won’t be going back!

Philpotts is in my opinion, the best Fish and Chips I have ever had (and I have had a few Fish in Chips!). I used to frequent this chippy as a kid in the 80s. And I have been in love with it ever since. Any trip to Hythe has to include a trip to Philpotts! Absolutely delicious.

Just had dinner from Philpotts and it was lovely! The fish was huge and everyone said it was very nice, I had battered sausage and it was lovely, the chips were some of best chips I've had from a chip shop. The man working was very friendly and we will certainly be going back.

Just finished a delicious fish and chips from Philpotts. One of the very best I’ve had. Fish was lightly battered and very tasty. A rare compliment I can say is NOT A SINGLE BAD CHIP! All were crispy yet soft inside. Thoroughly recommend. 🐠

Best fish and chip shop in the area by far.! I am a bit of a fish and chip connoisseur and quite picky. I found that every chippie in the area disappointed me in one way or another.... Not this one Chips are cooked to perfection (slightly crispy, fluffy in the middle and not too greasy) Fish is always fresh and also cooked very well. Service with a smile

This is a great shop. Firstly we we turned up 2 minutes after opening. The owner asked if we wanted in or out. When we took the opportunity to eat in he opened up the whole backend. The young lady serving was not experienced in the menu (hence the drop in the rating) but food was excellent and the location was excellent. The owner was so nice and kind.

As an American coming to England, this is what I think of as a real fish and chips shop. First the outside is so inviting....with the name of the shop is a pretty green and white. Walk in and you have a ceiling about 6 feet so if you are tall watch your head. But once you are in you REALLY feel like you have gone back in time. Now you have a choice.....in front of youare some yummy items that you can buy and take away. Or you can order off the huge menu in front of you on the wall. Several types of fish are available.....some breaded, some battered. You can put in your order and wait to take it out OR.....head for the back of the shop where there are lovely little tables with much more head room. Outside you will see the beautiful Solent....great view. Most likely the owner will be here to take your order. He is he son of the original owner and a really nice person. Don’t be shy........if you aren’t familiar with a traditional fish and chips shop, ask any questions.....they are happy to help. And don’t be afraid of the mushy peas......they are just peas...mushed. I don’t get why.....must be a British thing. Anyway do try Philpot’s Fish and chips. The fish is perfectly cooked and just delicious.

Good quality traditional fish & chips that compares well with any in the Yorkshire heartland of fish & chips. Writing as a connoisseur of this food, Phipotts has a varied menu and very friendly and helpful staff. Good quality fried fish should - like at this shop - have the fish skin removed before cooking. Many fish & chip friers in the south of England don't remove the skin because they use deep frozen fish that cannot withstand being deskinned. Only fresh fish are suitable. Philpots does it better - the traditional way.

“Very disappointing, unfortunately not what I would expect.” Albeit this is a lunchtime special for £3.20 but the size is ridiculous, the chips are almost non-existent and lucky too as they were hard and cold, the fish is no bigger than a large fish finger. The batter was like a cake mixture and under cooked. In all a very disappointing lunch, will never be returning. Visited September 2015 1 of 5 stars Value 1 of 5 stars Service 1 of 5 stars Food

This is purely a review of the restaurant, very similar to the one I left on Trip Advisor, but with a 24 hours later update: After a challenging weekend in the New Forest, (not the Forest’s fault) we decided to try and salvage something by having a posh afternoon tea at Burley Manor before returning home. We rang and booked the day before as wifey is both vegetarian and GF, and we wanted to give them a fighting chance. I wish we hadn’t bothered. Let’s start with the parking - there isn’t any if your vehicle is bigger than a small family gadabout. We were in our motorhome, and ended up parking in a field that was open for a separate event. Burley Manor assured us this was fine, and that neither gate (big or small) would be locked. You guessed it - wrong , but we squeezed out thanks to wifey’s skilful driving and steely nerve. Then let’s talk about the perfectly coiffed member of staff who seated us, took our drinks order, sent somebody else over with them, then ignored us for nigh on 45 mins. Finally our afternoon tea arrived and was placed by a disdainful waiter, who when he was confused about who’s was who’s and I pointed out the ramifications of getting it wrong snapped, ‘well I didn’t take the order, did I?’ The food itself was fine, just fine, not excellent or amazing, and certainly not worth £61! When we challenged our disdainful waiter on the horrific wait, he was more than happy to throw his colleagues under the bus, saying that his previous establishment had been much more professional! His excuse was that they had had been overbooked for lunch and had several afternoon tea bookings. They had our phone number, if they couldn’t handle the number of guests, they shouldn’t have taken the booking, or they should have cancelled us. To be honest, the nice man who had accidentally locked us in the field, on his Penny farthing and talked about deer and pigs, but reassured us we would easily get Buzzy the motorhome out was the highlight of the whole debacle, and he didn’t work for Burley Manor! 24 hours later - reader - Wifey got glutened - she is so poorly today! Luckily she is only intolerant, not allergic and should recover within 24 hours. If you are actually allergic, coeliac etc, avoid this place like the plague.
