25th April 2025 Ruminating over the last few weeks on restaurant options for a birthday meal, I experienced a curious phenomenon: for some reason, I didn’t feel like just going for a massive juicy steak. Whether or not opting for upscale French cuisine instead is a sign of irreversible progression towards middle age is something I want to spend less time thinking about, but that’s what I did. What sealed the deal in the end, aside from Petit Pois being new and a bit different to what I’d normally choose, was that my usual quick glance at the menu – long enough to gain an impression without ruining the fun of deciding what to eat while actually there – revealed a good half dozen or so listings I really wanted to try. With Mum, Dad and Elle joining us, it felt like a good way to do just that. Some average olives notwithstanding, that plan began phenomenally. Each of us went for a different entrée, and with my gentle encouragement Dad ordered 12 snails instead of six, and Mum six oysters instead of three. Completing the line-up were scallops, cod fritters in a worryingly-named ‘sauce chien’, and my French onion soup. Without everyone literally trying everything else there was still a lot of swapping and sharing, and the consensus seemed to be that the fritters – crispy on the outside, salty on the inside, with the sauce a sort of fiery chimichurri – came out on top. Dad’s garlic sauce was also very popular, and we ordered bread later to mop it up, but the snails themselves were a bit piddly. I really enjoyed my soup, but found myself trying to offload the giant cheesy ‘croutons’ – a meal in themselves – mostly because I didn’t want to fill up too quickly. I didn’t try any scallop but reviews were good; I’ve had better oysters more than once in Brighton. Between us, we also managed to sample the halibut fillet, the blood orange duck breast, the cassoulet and the wild mushroom crêpes. There was a lot going on. Strangely the duck was the only thing that came out as a full course, with dauphinois, kale and beautiful blobs of beetroot purée; the cassoulet in particular could have done with a bit of veg but we were all fighting over the one side of delicious sautéed greens we ordered (except Elle, who thought they tasted of mussels). Highlights were the duck itself, high quality and cooked to perfection (although the orange was very much front and centre), and the halibut (although the subtleties of the shellfish velouté were lost on my palette by that stage). The crêpes were the least celebrated: nice enough flavours but heavy and lacking in variety well before the end of the unnecessary second. Thankfully, it was only after all of that I realised the wall to my back was a ginormous blackboard charcuterie menu, because I would definitely have regrettably tried to squeeze in a few slices of jambon here and a gourmet fromage or two there. As it was, we shared the trio of unfortunate crèmes brûlées instead. I’m not an expert, but the layer of sugar was “too toffee apple” for those round the table in the know – for me the coffee one just didn’t taste very nice and so I left it there. Overall, it did feel that Petit Pois managed to disprove that old rule of thumb that the fewer options on a menu – the more a place specialises – the better, but in hindsight perhaps the fact that there’s nothing I’d definitely re-order if I went back contradicts that sentiment. Really good, solid food all-round, bordering on the spectacular in moments without ever quite crossing over, and a nice wine list, too. I would go back though. I’m just glad Petit Pois is in Brighton, as I’m not sure I could handle the look of disdain I’d get ordering just the roast garlic mash and a block of soft goat’s cheese if I was actually in France.

I’m rating it 5 because when it’s good, it’s amazing. But I think the quality can be quite inconsistent. It’s not always worth the price tag. I would recommend not going to for the 3 meat combo as the roast option.

If you're hungry, this is not the place for you. Whilst the food was delicious, the portions are ridiculously small. I ordered duck breast expecting to get a duck breast but no. A single duck breast probably serves about 5 plates. You get the tiniest portion of meat, a teaspoon of beetroot puret, some garnish and two tablespoons of potato. Don't get me wrong the flavour was lovely but I go to a restaurant to eat because I'm hungry, not to taste bold flavour. Equally, what's with serving 200ml of cola etc That's almost half a can of pop?! You think because you charge £3 for half a can I'll buy another 🤣 yeah right. These are mixers, not drinks. Please sort that out it's an insult. Needless to say after a meal here, we had to go to McDonald's after. Overall, lovely staff, great food,.just a lack of it. Drinks - again, too small.

⭐☆☆☆☆ Very disappointed with our experience at this restaurant. We had a full order, our bill was £300, but we were rushed out before we even finished our food and wine. We were not just sitting without an order, yet we were still pressured to leave, which was extremely unpleasant. The waiter handled the situation in a very unclear and awkward manner, making us feel even more uncomfortable. This kind of treatment towards customers is unacceptable. I do not recommend this place if you want to enjoy a meal peacefully.

Following the previous good reviews on Tripadvisor from other customers we were really looking forward to our booking on 20th September. Sadly we were really disappointed. The wine selection was very limited ( not enough to give a poor review), the starters were OK but nothing to shout about. The descriptions relating to the main courses were extremely inaccurate. I had rib eye steak which should have been accompanied by ratatouille and fries which were not on the plate when it arrived, Fries were supplied after complaining but ratatouille was not available. My wife's main course of cod should never have left the kitchen, to say that it was overcooked would be an understatement and any self respecting chef would not have tarnished his reputation by letting it be served to a paying customer. After complaining a satisfactory cod was provided however the advertised accompanying bisque was sadly lacking. Although the bill was adjusted for the poor quality of food the evening had already been spoilt. We also understood that the regular chef was not in attendance and the busy Friday night was obviously too much for the stand in non-French chef to cope with.

This place really is a 5/5. I don’t think there’s anything I could fault it on, it was food magic! I had thr smoked mackerel pate for starters which was so freaking delicious, contrasting with the bitterness of the pickled cucumber. Then I had the crepe roulee with mushrooms, leeks, creme fraiche and mixed leaves which was incredible!! It was well presented but the taste was OH MY GOD! Insanely good. Husband had the crispy squid which was perfevtion, followed by the sea bream which he said was beautifully cooked. He then had creme brulee which was so clearly homemade with a stick of cinnamon in! Service was perfect too. I couldn’t love this place anymore - best meal out I’ve had in years!!

I really wanted to go to this restaurant because the menu looked really good and I love French food. I was going to an evening event on Brighton seafront that didn’t have an end time. This restaurant is just off the seafront, up a little side road. So we thought we’d turn up hoping they had a table available. They did! We were welcomed with a big smile and seated. The atmosphere was bubbly, it has an open kitchen which adds to the ambience. Drinks came very quickly, the house Rosé was delicious, on the dry side with a bit of depth. My husband had an alcohol free beer. I had the sea bass special which was gorgeous, a thick piece of sea bass, cauliflower purée, tiny new potatoes, tempura courgettes and sauce vierge (? it was diced tomato, capers, herbs). My husband had ribeye steak, fries and bordelaise sauce, cooked medium, also very tasty, he particularly liked the sauce. For dessert we both had chocolate fondant served with vanilla ice cream, lovely melting middle, it was perfect. An absolutely lovely experience, friendly attentive service and fabulous sophisticated food, it really reminded me of my Uncle Pete's French restaurant, good food and good times. I will definitely go back if I’m in Brighton!

In today’s cash strapped world getting a three course lunch for £25 is a steal. Even more so when the food is this good. We had a couple of glasses of cremant whilst deciding what to eat. Two starters the chilled pea and mint soup was delicious and the assiette of meats came beautifully presented and with gluten free bread on request. Mains of sea bream on a bed of new potatoes ratatouille and samphire and a Toulouse sausage with a mustard sauce and a very garlicky mash were both good sized for the set lunch menu. One desert of a mixed cheese platter was again beautifully presented. The only downside was the card reader going down which at one stage had us considering which auto bank to go to. The restaurant should have a contingency in place for such situations. Luckily it came back up before we left. Overall great food backed up by great service.

Came down to Brighton recently for a conference with some colleagues, and it has been so long since I came down, I thought I would open myself up to a new dining experience, albeit for a quick lunch break. I had not heard anything about the restaurant before but the menu was right up my street and so I thought I would stop by. I wasn't sure if I would be able to get a table on such short notice, but my concerns were soon put to rest by the very welcoming and accommodating servers. Upon entering I was treated like a longstanding repeat customer and the atmosphere and overall mood was very relaxed and there was a noticeable attention to detail. I couldn't fault the service one bit, it was mirrored by food of an equal footing, my only grievance is that I couldn't stay longer before jetting back to the conference. Perhaps another visit on a future weekend away is on the cards.

Worth every penny. Went here on Easter weekend and not only the staff polite and welcoming and friendly, the service was swift and the food was absolutely phenomenal. I've been to a lot of high-end restaurants in Brighton, and after my visit to Petit Pois, it has soared to the top by considerable amounts. I have paid twice the price at other establishments for a poorer and slower service and honestly a much lower quality of food. I highly recommend it.

Protestations that the chef is French from La Rochelle were irrelevant! Don't call ot bouillabaise. Other dishes OK but sort of overrated.

If you read this, it may be because you are interested in going there but you wonder if you have to. All these reviews with 5 stars are giving you a hint but let me tell you how much this place has to offer. First and very briefly because we're not here for that, food is a 10, staff is a 10 and cleanliness is a 10. Petit Pois is way more than a french restaurant to go to, it is an experience. At first, the entrance makes you feel at home as it's warm, small and it already smells great cuisine. You will be welcomed quite quickly by the lovely staff (french sometimes but we don't bite I promise) and they will lead you to your table. I would advise a table near the windows as its' pretty lovely.. Once here, you'll have some water and the menu will quickly arrive and with it, wonders. If you think you've been through what this planet has to offer, wait to go to Petit Pois. You have the choice and you may already think about what you'll get online on their web site, the menu is there. You can look for anything on the menu, you'll see a great choice of starters. I tried them all, they're all exquisite. My favorite is the goat croquettes. If you want to try snails, that's the only place to get the proper experience. Then you have les assiettes, which are all very well balanced and worth the money compared to the quality and amount of food. You'll love the Gourmet one where you can select the fromages you want and the charcuterie you want. As I'm always pleased, I love a good laugh in asking them to pick what they want as I'm sure I will be delighted. When it comes to the plat de résistance, you'll be able to travel far from here and back to France with delightful meats and creamy sauces. Of course you'll have some fish and vegetables for our vege friends. My partner being vegetarian, they'll always find the best dish here, special mention to the amazing Leek and spinach gratin, a must try. The accompagnements, you'll love them. It's a great quantity so be careful. Then, the desert, oh dear it's fantastique. Truffles are amazingly well made and the poached pear is incroyable. My favorite? The Trio de Creme brulée. You'll travel from a cinnamon creme to a lemon one, all being very well made and prepared with Amour. Overall, do not hesitate and book your table. Whether you're with friends, family, or with your Love, you will have a great experience. Merci.

Delicious! A little gem After 5 years, I came back and had the cod fritters as a starter and the pork chop as a main. Both of them were cooked lovely. However l, my partner had the duck breast and thought that it was a bit bland and overcooked. I still think it's a little gem and would come back again. I think on the day that we went they were extremely busy (Saturday afternoon).

Excellent little Gem, with authentic French Chefs. Explosion on the pallet, highly recommend the Oyster's followed with Duck. Apologies for no photo of the Trio Creme Brulee, it was gone before I remembered to take a photo, great size for sharing, but I wouldn't be sharing it again, far to good to share. The Portion size of the mains could be a little more, but still great value for ££. The Staff were very attentive, constantly on the look out for when service was needed. They let us stay a little longer to finish our wine whilst they prepared for the evening bookings. This is where we found out it's a family run business which I Love, I personally can't stand a chain Restaurant. This is 100%not a Chain. The atmosphere is relaxed, great for romance or group's, would be great for a little bit of light music in the background. We will definitely be returning to this little Gem. Let them know Brian Recommends.

Fantástica comida y servicio. Preciosa presentación y una buena elección de comida disponible. Pudín de café pegajoso y tarta de frangipane eran deliciosos.

Food was fantastic - me and my partner went for my birthday breakfast the other day. We ordered the French toast and the breakfast muffin - both came reasonably fast and tasted amazing. Everything was clean and presented well. Little bit on the pricier side but definetly worth it.
