Great place good ales, and excellent homemade food. The Sunday roast is the best I’ve had. My wife is vegetarian and she enjoyed the food very much. Recommend to everyone who likes a family run bar.

An absolute gem in the centre of Ventnor. A real old fashioned welcome from the congenial host Graham. The traditional home cooked food is excellent and there is a good selection of ales. The memorabilia and decoration is really quite special. Definitely worth a visit.

This is our regular eatery for great food and at an unbelievable low cost. I do not know how they can do it for the price. Half price of what you would expect elsewhere.

My husband and I stopped on the off chance to have a drink in this small but brightly decorated hostelry and ended up having an excellent freshy cooked two course lunch from a wide ranging menu served by a welcoming and convivial landlady. The service, atmosphere and quality of the food could not have been better. And great value!

Myself and partner with two Canadian friends visited Perks of Ventnor at the end of February for a drink and some food. We had used this little gem of a place several times in the past . Due to the Covid Virus We had not been to the Island for nearly 2 years, We were delighted to find that Perks of Ventnor in particular and Ventnor Town in general had changed very little. Some licensed establishments that you visit are either a pub selling good beer with bad food and wine or a restaurant selling good food and wine with bad beer. This place is neither, it sells good beer/wine with good food. The Owner and staff are both friendly and professional. A previous reviewer had left a very negative review with what appeared to be a rant about an anti Gay owner and manager/staff . This is not true as both of my Canadian friends are openly gay. They know the owner and staff well having lived on the Island in the past, they both were treated the same as every one else over the years and thought that the review was unfair. I will be visiting Ventnor probably over the Easter bank holiday and will most certainly make a bee line to Perks of Ventnor.

Dave the manager suddenly banned me for no reason. His conduct is Draconian and totally out of touch with the modern world. He is the Only person in my entire life who has ever banned me out of all the businesses I've visited over the years. Everyone else has Welcomed my custom and accepted me for who I am, without question. When I asked him Why he banned me, he said "I don't 'have' to give a reason" then gave an insincere apology. I then explained to him that there are plenty of other businesses that I can visit. I had no wish to argue the issue with him so I left shortly afterwards. He is always the complete opposite to his other customers. I then e-mailed the owner Graham Perks. He has clearly chosen to condone his manager/barman by ignoring my e-mails, then letter requesting an explanation as to why I was banned for no reason. Graham clearly has more loyalty for his Staff than his paying customers, which shows this business's lack of respect for their customers. If Graham had any decency, he would have responded, apologized for Dave's rudeness and offered me a long overdue explanation and resolution by now. The very reason Dave is unwilling to give an explanation, and Graham is unwilling to relay to me an explanation, is because it would reflect on the truth of the matter that Dave is discriminatory against anyone who is Goth and Autistic and who Cross Dresses part-time, like at a local music & comedy festival I attended. Dave knew I was alternative from the start, yet, out of the blue, two months after my first visit, he suddenly banned me unexpectedly on the Sunday evening. I never visited cross dressed, but that shouldn't be an issue in this day and age. I also didn't have any piercings or tattoos, which are very common with alternative people, including in the Goth scene. Again, that also shouldn't be an issue. I'd merely asked him for a drink and I'd also complimented the food I'd eaten at Perks of Ventnor the week before (I visited on a Friday), which I thoroughly enjoyed. The two female staff on duty that day who spoke to me were very Welcoming, and like all staff except Dave, none of them requested me to leave. Dave had pre-planned this, as Miles called out for Dave upon my visit to the bar counter, who was clearly counting on me coming in so he could berate me in front of everyone in the room to end my custom on a whim for the sake of it. Dave acted indifferently, showing no interest whatsoever in the fact that I'd enjoyed my food the previous week and complimented it, as all he was interested in was having His say and humiliating me in front of his staff colleague and customers. Dave’s exact words were “I don’t want you coming back here again”, without saying why. I’d never caused any trouble to anyone there or anywhere else, as I am always very civil wherever I go, but there was no point me trying to reason with Dave, as he was unwilling to listen to reason. Although I remain very disappointed that Dave felt the need to ban me for no reason, and that he's refused to give a reason (as it would reflect upon the reality of his complacency that he's discriminatory against anyone whose face ' doesn't fit ', even though I was always very respectful of everyone including Dave's repeated rudeness, and my alternativeness is mild compared to some goths' appearances), the environment was far better whenever he wasn't on duty, but Dave's and Perks's loss, as Perks doesn't have a captive audience, and there are plenty of other businesses within and outside of Ventnor whose staff act Professionally towards Their customers, so Perks is of no loss to me as a customer. During an early visit last June, I once, unintentionally, forgot to put my mask back on as I approached a wall with memorabilia. I quickly rectified the situation then apologised to Dave, who insisted on saying "Rules are Rules", even though a further comment wasn't required from him, as I'd already made my apology. He just wanted to throw his weight around at any opportunity he was on duty. The environment was the opposite whenever he wasn't there. Just a week after he unfairly banned me for no reason, he carried on his charade while he visited an Indian restaurant, intimidating me after he'd booked a table for him and his friends there for the next evening. I was merely viewing the restaurant's menu to think through what to order, then, making himself obvious that he was there to make a nuisance of himself, with no witnesses (as the Indian staff were out the back by this stage), he stood in the room for several seconds then sniggered at me on his way out. For someone who is given the responsibility of managing one business, he sets a very poor example of running a business when he then intimidates a customer he had banned the previous week in a restaurant he doesn’t even work in. I ignored his immature attitude, but this man shouldn't be intimidating people within his business or especially somewhere else where he doesn't even work. My 1 star rating reflects the incident relating to 29 August 2021, the occasion I was banned for no reason, as most staff were pleasant to me and the food was very tasty, which I would have bought more of for future lunches, if it wasn’t for Dave bullying me not to return to Perks because of his hang-ups, despite me being a customer there from June to August 2021. To this day, not one other business has banned me anywhere else, as they have Respect for Their customers. Likewise to when I've bumped into staff of other businesses on occasions outside of their premises who've always been very welcoming to me within And outside of the businesses they work in. I am posting this review in the hope that no other customers are treated appallingly there or elsewhere by this rude member of staff and to reflect upon the business owner’s ignorance to take customers’ complaints seriously, which could easily have rectified this matter instead of repeatedly ignoring it. I have also notified various people of the above incidents relating to August and September 2021, who are equally as shocked and appalled at how I’ve been treated. It’s their call as to whether they return to Perks, visit for the first time or never go there, but at least some have refused to visit there for the first time, on principal, in case They are also subjected to the same treatment. I don’t blame them.

This is my second visit to Perks, and if it stays the same it wont be my last!. Visiting a friend who is now a Ventnor Resident we wanted somewhere for a nice lunch with good food and somewhere we could have a chat and catch up over Lunch. This as before proved to be just the Place. The inside is fascinating dedicated to everything British and britishness! You could spend hours just trying to read and look at everything on the walls here!. The food is great . Nothing too Fancy or posh but that's what's great. Its good home cooked meals. Nice beer or wine to go with your meal. No rush to get you to eat and move on so your table can be freed up. Its a very relaxed atmosphere. I agree with the comments that say the only problem is that its on the Isle Of Wight and not nearer my home!

We were very thirsty in Ventnor so chose to visit Perks for a quick drink. It's almost like stepping back in time with all the British memorabilia everywhere, and the traditional lunch crowd (we brought the average age down by a couple of decades). Had a lovely evening in Perks. Stepped in as a stranger, and it was the sort of place you're made to feel at home straight away. I heard around the island the owner has several bars and knows what he's doing. Wasn't there himself; instead the bar was staffed by a most affable fellow called Miles, who helps out on Mondays. A likable group of locals accumulated round the bar, including me in the chat.Perks has a British theme, with a large dummy of a soldier in the window, various pictures of Spitfires, and other such bric-à-brac all about. Apparently they do a very good lunch certain days of the week too. As in a lot of places I visited in Ventnor, there's an air of eccentricity about Perks. It's a one off: good beer, good company, good fun.

My husband and I try to visit Perks every year. This year the old fashioned warm welcome and great food was as good as ever. Perks, however, is located right on the high street which now seems to be part of a racing circuit for the local boy racers and their noisy revved up engines which marred the cheerful atmosphere that we usually enjoyed in past. Perhaps a sleeping policeman might restore the peaceful atmosphere?

A re-visit to "Perks of Ventnor" after an unavoidable absence of four years. Nothing had changed much, Thank God, still just as welcoming and just as great fun as from years ago. Mine Host (Graham) really knows how a good pub ought to be. He has a lot of knowledge, having been involved with most of the Pubs of Ventnor at one time or another and he is, in fact, in the middle of buying "The Volunteer" just down the road from Perks. Frankly, I was rather apprehensive about going to Perks after some of the low-star reviews I've read. I am indeed a local, but little known in the town; I went with a friend who is slightly known at the restaurant. I was expecting blatant jingoism. What we got was extremely friendly and helpful service from really lovely people. The food is home-cooked, wholesome, hot and appetizing. I had a generous portion of cottage pie, with tasty gravy and four fresh vegetables - a very nice meal by any standards. As I am a "senior", I had a great "pud" included in my deal - I chose spotted dick and custard, again, hot and tasty. I've never considered my politics to be right-of-centre, but to be honest, if this is the kind of service one gets in a restaurant whose philosophy is based on those values, then great - I'll be going again! I did not, incidentally, hear a single tendentious political remark made by anyone at all, customer or staff, during our 90 minute meal. So, book (it's popular) and either enjoy all the Union flags on display or overlook them - our experience is certainly that you'll be welcomed. Food is served until late afternoon, so if you happen to be here around 2.00pm you're more likely to get a table.

If you were to fall asleep on a journey and suddenly wake up in this bar you could be forgiven for thinking that you were in an ex-pat bar in Gibraltar or Spain. You are certainly left in no doubt that the owners are very pro Brit's! Love the adults only policy, actually able to enjoy a very good pint without rugrats screaming or charging around unsupervised. That said the education that kids could get about British history at Perks is probably better than the current schools system can give them. There are a very good range of beers, ciders and wines and it's service with a smile. It would appear that this is the favourite watering hole for locals and 'ex-pats' from the mainland that are kicking back and enjoying their latter years, so war stories and banter abounds. We could do with a few more bars like this where we can celebrate being British without fear of upsetting some minority groups, well done Perks!

This establishment purports to be a 'wine bar and lounge'. However, it is not a wine bar as might normally be understood in terms of ambience and wine list; rather it is a 'lounge', resembling, in décor and ambience, the room in the house that some people are pleased to call their lounge and where they while away their evenings griping at the television. Just as you would scarcely be welcome if you walked into their lounge, so you will not be here. You may, of course, ignore the belligerent UKIP banners and slogans outside and think that it is merely a place of harmless, quirky English eccentricity with a lot of flags. This feeling will soon be dispelled as you ease your way apologetically through the muttering and glowering, resentful stares of the clientele. You will be made acutely aware that you are 'not from round here'. Once you have made your way to the bar, you will be obliged to order and receive your drinks across or between the unbending heads of yet more glowering locals. You will feel mildly conflicted between being glad that you did not spill your drinks in the process and almost wishing you had. At the bar, you will also encounter the proprietor, a UKIP stalwart who does not trouble to set aside his views in the interests of hospitality but makes them known through a combination of leery-jokey, xenophobia-lite asides and a plethora of passive-aggressive dog-whistle notices setting out what he expects the 'ladies and gentlemen' who frequent his establishment to do (and, of course, by implication, who he expects them to be). Whatever drinks you choose will probably not thrill: the wines are the kind that leave you yearning for a nice schooner of British sherry and the beers are either fizzy Euro-lagers (served, one presumes, without a hint of irony) or unremarkable Bass, It is unlikely that you will stay long enough to have the food or feel remotely comfortable enough to sit down and eat it but it appears to be standard pub fare. We did not stay.

Been to Perks 3 or 4 times and every time i have had a lunch time dinner it has been excellent. Food is very good home cooking and the staff are very friendly. I wish it was bigger inside so you didn't have to book.

A great little find! Very welcoming and so much cider choice! I tried the black fox organic cider on recommendation by the other customers and even got an information leaflet! Just fab!

Perks is a 'shop-front' pub in the High Street, we popped in there prior to eating elsewhere and had a quick pint. The atmosphere is great - décor is "British" through and through! Marvelous!!

My wife and I dined here last Friday and all I can say is Wow! I had the most tasty Beef Wellington that I've had in years!! My wife also raved about the Lamb shank she had. Generous portions, beautifully cooked vegetables and the most polite service! Thank you 'Perks'...well be back soon!!

Perks is very quirky, but the soul [and the success] of any pub is made up of its customers. There is an eclectic mix of clientele, and the sound of many chattering voices [no music & no slot machines or video games] reminds you of how pubs used to be.

We dined there (need to book) and it was great fun. The main room is stacked with memorabilia and apart from Churchill and The Queen, there were the Beatles, Sean Connery (in Goldfinger) and much to appreciate for those of us raised in the 60's.The food was well-prepared and we ate very well (British menu of course) but the whole atmosphere of relaxed friendliness was amazing and our dog was admired and petted so many times. A lovely evening (adults only) and a less-than-usual wine list.

We love returning to Perks as its so friendly - been coming for a few years now & always find locals & staff amazing . Called again one evening but around 9.45pm I started feeling unwell. We tried local taxi companies but they couldn't pick us up for hours :-( upon hearing this Graham the owner offered us a lift home - I was so grateful what a lovely gesture . If you are in ventnor I recommend you visit you won't be disappointed

We walked up and down the high street trying to find a nice pub to have a couple in before eating at Foggs (exceptional grub, see separate review) and were delighted to find Perks. A pleasant buzz from the regulars, eclectic décor and good beer. What's not to like. A much better bet than the other options, all plastered with Sky Sports banners.

Customers all stared at us when we walked in. Not a friendly welcome. Clearly for locals who are "in favour" at the time, all sitting around the bar making it difficult to get served. Would not return to this establishment as holiday makers are clearly not welcomed.

Return visit, a little apprehensive as returning can sometimes be a disappointment. We found Perks last year, we needed somewhere to sit & have a drink while we waited for the next bus. ?? buses & 3 hours later we left to catch bus back to Sandown, it was a'home from home' experience. As we waited little plates of mixed topping french stick kept being brought to the table, same again this year & we met the young man who makes them. You are welcomed as family & everyone is happy to share their life on IOW with you. Met lots of lovely people, drinks very good value, we enjoyed the added extra of a 'charity auction' silly money for silly things but all in a good cause. I am now the proud owner of Lg white china (signed) wash basin & jug (forgot i would have to try & get it in suitcase), sml travel clock & bought husband signed copy of Dickie Bird book. The whole experience was worth every penny. It us a must visit place if you are in Ventnor. We will be back there next year.

Attended Perks for a family meal during a weekend stay on the Island. The restaurant is very cluttered but gave you something to look at whilst waiting for food. We ordered vegetable lasagne. When it came to the table it was served in a pudding dish on a plate and was a very measly small portion of lasagne accompanied by three very small roast potatoes and a lot of vegetables. Two other family members had lasagne and their portions were just as small. The lasagne was thick and stodgy with just some bits of mushroom in it, very disappointing. Desserts on offer were old-fashioned ones such as trifle, banana boat, rice pudding etc. I love trifle and was so disappointed when it turned up to find it was the bottom half of a Bird's packet trifle for the jelly, topped with runny tinned custard and a squirt of cream. As a family member was paying for the meal I did not feel able to complain and upset her, but I felt that the prices charged were far too much for what was essentially home-cooked food that was not good enough for a restaurant. We will not be returning to Perks

Nothing to dislike about this place, Sadly the owner was unavailable. Made to feel welcome by regulars at the bar. We didn't eat here as we had a reservation at The Cantina a few yards away along the High Street.

The frontage looked good, it looked okay so popped in for a coffee. Horrible instant coffee, served in a old cup and saucer...it reminded me of a dated old pub snug, that had seen better days. Won't be returning, didn't finish the coffee, truly awful.

At first consideration, Perks of Ventnor is a cross between a wine bar a pub and a curiosities shop. I am glad to report that it is a completely happy and seamless blend. I knew Graham many years ago when he and wife Sue ran excellent pubs on Hayling Island. As he told me, they moved from one island to another 25 years ago as they felt once-sleepy Hayling was going the way of big next-door neighbour, Portsea Island ( known to its denizens as 'Portsmiff') After running a number of pubs around the Island, Graham and Sue moved in to the High Street at Ventnor. In another life I travelled around 2000 pubs, being paid to work on their image and making up PR stories about them ( I know, why did I ever retire?). To start with I could not work out was what exactly made a great pub. It certainly wasn't location or décor. I have visited hundreds of characterful pubs in fabulous settings with the atmosphere and appeal of a dentist's waiting room. Then the penny dropped. It was all down to the guv'nor and his or her partner. That is a rule which has pertained for centuries, and is exemplified perfectly at Perks. Good food, drink and customers...and a great atmosphere even when the Perks are not behind the jump.

lovely atmosphere here, nice decor, really interesting looking round the walls, loads of old pictures that brought back memories to all of our group. Coffee was excellent plus we were given biscuits which was a nice touch. Shame we could not stop to eat here as it looked really nice.

On a very wet and windy day we found this little gem - very interesting place full of eccentric people which I love. The walls were covered in photographs of celebrities and there were many books to read if you so wished! We were dining out in the evening so we both chose crab sandwiches washed down with a pint of best for my husband and a rather good sauvignon blanc for me - thoroughly enjoyed the couple of hours spent here - staff were really friendly and nothing was too much trouble - hope to be back the next time we visit the Island.

Service is terribly slow and all I hear is bar staff arguing about who's taking the order to the table. The decor looks good and the features around the place. However whether you order at the table or stand in the queue, the service is painfully slow.

Enjoyed all areas of this characterful establishment many times over the years. On this occasion a family gathering in the adjacent "boatshed" was just the ambience we needed away from the (enjoyable though it was) bustle of the bar. Good pub grub in generous portions, and well kept local ales. The staff were all so accommodating to any dietary foibles, and were exceptionally friendly and welcoming (as were other customers too). I nearly forgot to mention the stunning sunset views across the sea. Not much out there until you reach the Caribbean. Look forward to returning.

The Fishbourne is a super place for a nice relaxed meal. We always go there before getting back on the ferry to the mainland.
