Been a few times due to the location after a walk but just can't really get away with it. Have family and friends who love it but the queing system is so chaotic, food is just okay and l, last time we went, we had to sit in the poly tunnel due to having a dog and outside area being full and it was so dire.

Usually drive past because car park is normally choc a block. This time managed to get a space. Have been here a few times over the years and have never understood their queuing system. It all feels a bit chaotic and noisy. Quite quick service, coffee was nice, panini was quite soggy. Nice butchery and bakery, very few plants now for some reason. Quite disappointed really.

Visited after Herrington parkrun to sample their scones. We arrived 10.30 was a queue of around 20 people , however plenty tables You queue and pay then wait seated for food to be brought to you. It did take a while for the scones and two hot drinks to come so best not to visit if in a rush. Service was good, staff friendly, lovely atmosphere tables not to close together. Menu was good / reasonably priced. Scones were nice and we asked for them to be warned which wasn’t an issue. Lovely freshly made milkshakes you can take home from the farm shop area to and plants / fruit etc for sale (we ran out of time to browse) Added bonus of a walk to Penshaw monument before or after so you could spend few hours here.

Lovely to sit outside when the weather allows. Good selection of food, although some of the specials had finished when we got there at 1.15pm. Only 3 stars though because the pastry on the pie and quiche that we had was soggy due to being microwaved.

Visited over the weekend for a late lunch. It is always really busy, especially so on a sunny day, however the staff always do their best to get you seated and served as quickly as possible. I opted for the lasagne, which was amazing, the homemade chips are always a huge hit! The portions are pretty big, but it’s always worth making space for one of their cakes, I had lemon on this occasion and it was unreal! Forever a favourite spot ☺️

Home made pies; both variety and taste are always amazing. Credit to whoever makes them Lasagne, not at all for me. No taste except tomato; home made chips however are a must! Cakes; Kinder Chocolate Cheesecake, tasted purely of double cream with stale lumps of kinder Beauno on the top. Bought two portions at £4.50 each…….for that price you expect the beast. Addressed the issue with a lovely staff member; as all 4 of us felt it was an awful attempt at cheesecake. That said member of staff was then made to come back to us and stated “have spoken to the boss, who said we have sold a lot of the cheesecake, and haven’t had a complaint so because of that we won’t refund you.” So basically we were wrong, and it’s tough. Having been a customer at penshaw for over 20 years; we will no longer either visit or recommend. Exceptionally bad customer service

….. and across the road from Herrington Country Park (and Lilys tea shop) sits Penshaw tea rooms. With plenty of parking, the tea rooms are supplemented with a Bakery, Butchers, fruit and veg shop and outdoor garden plants, statues. The goods on sale look great as far from supermarket goods than you can get. However, you pay a premium for what you buy. The tea rooms were busy so it’s popular but we decided to take our bacon home and make our own sandwiches and save the prices of the tea rooms. Butchers and bakers are quite small, ramps are available for people with mobility issues and the staff were friendly.

There is a bakery lots of choice, & a butchers all grown at the farm, a veg stall, plants & milk machine for flavoured milk. You can sit outside (with your dog) undercover or on picnic benches

We popped in for lunch having climbed the hill to view the Penshaw Monument (it's a fair climb!). Extensive menu, super large helpings and delicious food. I had lamb and mint gravy sandwich, which came with salad, coleslaw and crisps. I have to say that it was the first time I'd had gravy, salad and coleslaw together, but somehow it worked. The lamb was tender and perfectly cooked, by the way. My partner had a quiche and we shared some chips. The pies looked really good and the various cakes and pastries even better.

I went yesterday with my daughter, for tea and cake. The tea rooms were busy but no more than usual and we placed our order and got seated without having to queue. But then it took 40 minutes for the order to arrive and by then we were both fed up with the wait. The front of house lady who’d seated us brought the order to our table and I told her I’d been about to leave because I felt 40 minutes had been too long to wait. She was quite offhand, her reply was, “Well , we were busy”. I said I appreciated that but it has still felt like an excessive time to wait and her reply was “You should have said, I’d have given you a refund”. What would have been better would be if they’d said when we first went in that there would have been that length of wait, then we could have chosen whether to wait or not. I’ve been going there for ten years now and this isn’t the first time they’ve been fairly rude if I’ve felt something wasn’t right - customer service definitely needs improving. Also in need of improving is the ladies toilet - there was no hook in cubicle door to hang a bag on, the flush button was broken and there were no paper towels, just a roll of toilet paper on the side of the hand basin. Given that the bin was full to the top with the toilet paper it looks like there hadn’t been hand towels there all day. Penshaw Tea Rooms do charge top dollar and the food is lovely, but there is definitely room for improvement, yesterday felt it was really all just be about profit for them. Luckily Love Lily have opened a branch up there now so the Tea Rooms don’t have the monopoly anymore, we’ll be going there next time.

Came for lunch with my sister for her birthday after being recommended by work colleagues. Found with ease, ample parking - a little dismayed at the queue for a table inside (would have sat either in the garden with a view of the monument or in the covered courtyard but it was too cold and drizzly) but the queue moved quickly and it gave you the opportunity to look in the displays cases with that day’s offerings and we were spoilt for choice, my sister had salmon quiche which was served with jacket potato, salads and coleslaw and I had the best corned beef and potato pie served with proper homemade chips we were stuffed when finished but still found room for dessert, couldn’t make our minds up between the Bakewell tart or the caramel chocolate tart so we bought one of each and shared having half caramel chocolate and half Bakewell tart and boy where they delicious.

Called in to buy meat at butchers and get a takeaway cheese scone. Visit every couple of months or so, last time was May this year. When given the cheese sciences asked for £2:40, I queried this but was correct. Said last time I was here it was £1:10 or £1:20 - she said yes but the scones were smaller then. I don't think it was smaller and certainly not half as big as the one I bought today. So double the price in just over 2 months. Can understand businesses needing to make the money back after covid, but doubling the price, disgraceful rip off, won't be going again to this tearoom, cheaper and better alternatives, Gillies and the Elm Tree to name a couple.

Visited with a friend for a coffee and the place was very busy. The setting is nice and atmosphere good, but I do think it's quite expensive at nearly £5 for a coffee and cheese scone. Although they were nice everything is served like a takeaway, so no fancy crockery or cutlery.I called into the Bakery and was barked at for attempting to cross a line I didn't know existed. As a first time visitor I wasn't aware of the queing system.I purchased a peach melba for my other half which was priced at £3.40. It was nicely presented but expensive for what it was. I've just checked my bank account and found I was actually charged £4.10 for it.This is extortionate for 1 cake and annoying that the price on display is not what you are charged.I paid by card and didn't check the card reader, and as you don't get a receipt I didn't know I'd been ovetcharged. Perhaps they charge a fee if you pay by card and it's under £5, but I didn't see any additional fees advertised.I would advise if you buy anything in the bakery you check your change or make sure you check the amount on the card reader. As a plus, my other half said the cake was delicious. In summary the food is very nice but you need to be aware of what you pay.

The food here never disappoints. The tea rooms are currently only offering take-away for drinks and basics, but the star of the show is the bakery, within the same courtyard. Fresh quiches, pies, bread, baked savouries and the cake selection is phenomenal. No matter how much I’m tempted, I have to go for the Peach Melba every time. Not the cheapest, but you’re paying for quality and the portions are generous.Lots of tables at the front, and now in the courtyard. They have small tubs with water dotted around for dogs. You have to be there before 11.00 to get a chance of being parked and secure a table. Also, with the food being fresh, some lines sell quickly. There are queues, but they go down quickly in the bakery and butchers. Tea rooms staff are friendly, but service is slow, and they don’t always work in order. I waited over 10 mins for a coffee and 2 teas, where as the lady behind me, her order was worked immediately. Another lady was waiting as I first walked in, and she was still waiting when I left, said she had been standing nearly 20 mins for 2 coffees.

I remember when this was three poly tunnels and a garage selling plants. Over the years, it has improved and now boasts, tea room, covered courtyard, butchers, bakers and fruit and veg shop. All that's missing is the candlestick makers! There is also a good sized car park and of course, they still sell lots of good, reasonably priced plants. Whilst there was plenty of hand sanitising stations, we could not see any QR code to scan for track and trace. It was also disappointing to find the tea room empty, with all the seating being outside. Whilst it was pleasant enough outside, the lack of cups, saucers and plates, with proper cutlery was poor, considering the price being paid. There was no sign of tables and chairs being cleaned and sanitised after use and the appropriate sign being placed upon them. This is not a game of Russian Roulette we are playing and we cannot be blase and leave things to chance. A stringent sanitisation regime has to be in place at all times. Hopefully indoors will reopen along side outdoors and proper crockery and cutlery provided. They appear to have plenty of staff, so no excuses.

Ordered a bacon sandwich and a latte to take out as no indoor seating area. It came to 7 pound which I thought was a bit over the top. But it did come in pretty packaging and bacon was nice and thick and came in a nice role but definitely not worth 7 pound. Staff behind counter weren’t brilliant, saying they couldn’t hear us because of the masks and they can’t lip read which didn’t create the best experience! However outdoor seating area is lovely , it was a beautiful autumn day and was nice to see the little birds getting their lunch at the little bird feeders . I was so looking forward to it.We did not have a problem with the set up for the food. Where we had the problem with was the attitude of staff in the butchers then the bakery. We didn’t have a problem with queuing outside but the woman had a terrible attitude then the woman at the bakery was even worse with her attitude. She shouted at us to use the hand sanitizer. We were not in the shop. Both myself and my friend are highly intelligent people and clean. We carry our sanitizer in our bags and use on entry and exit.I think if the staff were trained in customer service and spent more time cleaning the tables for customer use as per government guidelines we would not of had to sit at a filthy dirty table with stains all over.I rest my case.A very very couple of in happy customers.

I have always enjoyed my regular visits to the excellent Penshaw Tea rooms and have been twice recently under Covan restrictions but yesterday the level of hygiene under any conditions was atrocious , let alone when everyone must take additional cleansing and safety measures. The weather was wet and tables were only available in the polytunnel. That wasn't an issue but the fact that in that small area 4 dogs were allowed to roam around the full area without anyone challenging the owners or anyone cleaning after them was disgraceful. One dog actually urinated on a chair leg and another jumped onto the bench and had its paws and mouth all over the table. No member of staff cleaned this afterwards and the owners of the dogs certainly didn't You have a wealth of loyal regular customers. Please don't destroy all the good work and excellent reputation of Penshaw Tea rooms by permitting people to let their animals roam freely

This is one of those places that has just got better over the years.Long before the tea room was opened it was always the go to place for plants and garden essentials as there was always a friendly aura about the place without the hard sell. Now that the tea rooms are opened it is one of the best tea rooms in the region in my humble opinion. The selection of home cooked goodies on display from pie to scones to sumptuous cakes and all unbelievably good. The service is outstanding and is the same every visit with all staff so very friendly and helpful - with nothing too much trouble. The separate cake shop is fabulous and you literally do not know where to start or which cake to choose such is the selection. The butcher shop is outstanding with a great selection of home reared meats and sausages - with the black pudding being my particular favourite. All in all it is outstanding - and if you have not been yet - ask yourself why?

Called in for a bite to eat on our way back from hospital & we weren’t disappointed. At first glance it looked really busy & we were worried about getting parked but we managed to find a space. On entering the cafe the staff immediately found us a nice table & took our orders. There was a little wait for the food but well worth it. The quiche was superb & the little picture of the monument stencilled tonto the piping hot coffee was a lovely touch. Thank you for making us feel so welcome on our first visit we will definitely be back.

Plenty of choice hot and cold beautiful really fire in the winter, friendly staff fab views of the monument. Easy parking and plenty of interesting relaxing walks on the doorstep. Such a lovely tea room. Real fire and amazing food. It was very busy when we arrived and we waited for a table for 4. The staff were excellent. Always very aware of each customer and caring for their needs. The food was delicious. We all had drinks and cakes and couldn’t eat all the cakes. The tea room is a lovely place to go for savoury or sweet food. They also have a butchers and bakery next to the tea room. Thank you for your excellent service.

I have walked, cycled and driven past this tearoom hundreds of times, without crossing the threshold. Definitely a mistake… I had a breakfast which was freshly cooked, had good quality ingredients and all of the items I would choose for the ‘perfect’ breakfast. The staff are friendly and the coffee decent. However, the place has more to offer. I knew there was a nursery associated with it, but I didn’t know about the butchers and deli. In both of these separate buildings, the food looked equally as good as the tearoom. I will definitely return.

Fantastic tea room and this is proven by how busy it gets. It can take a little while to get seated but the staff do a fantastic job in making tables available. Great range of savoury hot and cold food with locally sourced ingredients used. The service is always great, very friendly and very chatty too. The cakes...these should be on a MAN V FOOD challenge because they are HUGE with a capital HUGE and delicious too. The log fire that roars in the middle of the room is a great feature. We love popping in and the experience is well worth the few minutes wait.

Very busy had to queue for a table which I don’t mind as obviously very popular. Food lovely, but service very poor unless your a regular you receive second class service, moved from a window seat twice as saved for clearly friends of the waitress who moved us, if you going to do that don’t make it as obvious, will definitely not be back which is a shame as food was very good, but good service whether first time or regular is equally important

Went for coffee and cake one week, and went for breakfast a couple of weeks later, both very enjoyable. Service very good, and quite speedy - although I am willing to wait a bit longer to have my food properly cooked. There is also a very nice artisan bakery and a good butchers on the site

Penshaw tea room is a short walk through Herrington Country Park away from my home. Food is so amazing that you may need to queue for a table at busy times. If the weather is good you can enjoy your food or drinks in the garden. There is also a bakers, farm shop butchery selling the family farm meat and you can take a stroll up penshaw monument or a walk round the country park to burn off some calories after your visit.

Visited on a busy Saturday lunchtime. We were greeted and only had a small wait before a table became free in the main building. Lovely quiche/ pie/ sandwiches/ soup/etc available, and a delicious selection of cakes. Food was very tasty and filling. We had no room left for cake so visited the on site bakery and took some home. Coffee was a bit cold for our liking, so will ask for extra hot drinks next time. Also, it's a shame people with well behaved dogs are not allowed in the main building, as so many similar cafes/ tearooms seem to allow this now.

The whipped large ice creams in plain cones were tasteless & in my opinion overpriced due to this. I’d not recommend it for a whipped ice cream. Save your money. There are better quality ice creams in and around for £2.50.

Food was good service only passable. Couldn't belive that the Fire Escape Route was a blocked by tables arranged by the Manager/ess. When challenged she just told us to F off which we did. Shame that a good pub was ruined by arrogant owner/manager. Hope she doesn't other premises to ruin!!!

Been previously to Love Lily both Roker and Herrington and always enjoyed. Today at Roker food wasn’t up to usual standard pancakes don’t seem fresh slightly colder than normal and harder on the surface with a slight chewiness. No one came to the table to ask if everything was ok. Service ok from the 2 younger members of staff both smiley and bubbly. The older blonde member of staff with tattoos and a nose ring was rude and miserable (no name badges to identify other than a description) Overall disappointed last treat of the hols, normally I don’t mind the price for the novelty and quality but today I’m a bit disgruntled at what felt like a waste of money. Lastly music too loud we could barely have a conversation?! What is that about in such a venue?! Also expecting 5 people to squeeze on a small table for 4 people is madness. No room for food or drinks?!
