Website has a full & comprehensive list of cocktails to choose from. Downside is that bar staff do not know/understand their cocktail offer. Ordered Long Island iced tea, which initially bar staff did not understand and another bar person stepped in & said he'd have a go at making one! It was the worst Long Island Iced tea that we've ever had. Vey disappointing

We stopped here on a canal boat trip to fill-up at the water point. Then, as it was late afternoon, thoughts turned to food. But where is this place? Then we realised that the vacant site next the canal had to be it. It’s, a dead parrot, an extinct volcano, a late relative, an empty tank of petrol on the highway to eternity. What a shame: maybe the old model of ale, pub grub and peace-and-quiet wasn’t so crazy after all. Cocktails? Pah! - it sounds like it’s better gone.

Terrible experience. We managed to find a table (a small win) amongst the see of empty tables with “reserved “signs on them. There was a group of around 20 young people who endeavoured to sing, chant, swear and dance on the tables. It was 3pm. Staff did not intervene one bit and I felt extremely sorry for a party of four sat next to the rabble who’s average age was probably 68. The rabble consistently chanted at them; calling them the “old ones”, until they were driven out and the hooligans could spread out further into their seats. Other customers were videoing the whole ordeal so if you look hard enough you’ll probably find the whole saga on the World Wide Web. the Tables were sticky. Very slow service at the bar. Could probably do with a bouncer on during the day if they’re trying to attract the above described clientele, or at least some staff to nip the problem in the bud early before it escalates.

Popped in for a couple of beers before meeting Mrs Oaks. The Amstal beers not great at £4.95 a pint and i can only repeat what others have said a lot of drunk people even at 9pm. Its definatly not my first point of call when near the Mailbox.

Just visited PennyBlacks on arrival we had a long wait on the bar and staff just wondered around, I want to say they were busy however trying to look busy fits it better As I was waiting the few bar staff that were serving I witnessed 3 of them make cocktails dip straws in and then lick the the straws! I do not think this is hygienic and to be honest is disgusting. Followed by a dirty glass! Then got to the total! £38.80 for 4 drinks what a rip of! One drink and off we went not coming back

Called in as meeting a friend. Deffo 1 for the youngsters! Busy sports bar, seemed a bit of a mess to be fair. Door man let anyone in even if obviously pretty hammered already. Drinks were ok. Probably a nicer place earlier on in the evening or mid-week.

We were staying at The Cube and thought we'd try here for a cocktail... £17 for 2 cocktails and the worst long island ice tea I'd ever had... The Pineapple Mojito was no better.

Oh dear lovely weekend very busy having a great day out went to this bar my god cheer up the staff were very busy and all but one coped very well the young lady that served us eventually was shocking customer service nil a absolute disgrace 😡I should go get a job in a lighthouse so you don’t have to serve people management get some staff when you know every year you are busy it’s not rocket science

Went to pennyblacks while staying in Birmingham and it was very disappointing. The day we went there it was full of a foul mouthed rabble and the prices charged in there was exorbitant. The girl who served us didn’t seem to worry whether she served us or not I would not recommend it and I will definitely not be going there again

I like this place as the burgers are amazing, great selection of drinks and lots of TV's to watch sports!

THIS IS NOT A SPORTS BAR. Went here to watch the Rugby European Cup final. After checking in advance that they were showing the match given Birmingham is more a football city and it was a big day for promotion of Birmingham football teams to the premier league got my drinks and sat down to find the locals demanded football was shown and THEY CAN ONLY SHOW ONE SPORT ON ALL SCREENS. Really pi**ssed off..

Stopped in here for drinks on a busy Saturday afternoon. Sold gluten free lager. Absolute bonus, but had lots of drinks and cocktails too. It’s a sports bar and had lots of screens with sky sports news on and lots of people in there watching it. Good atmosphere, nice friendly place.

I went to pennyblacks to have a few drinks and watch the football however pennyblacks doesn’t seem to know what it is. On the night I went it had the football on the screen (winner) but no sound because there was a DJ playing with nobody dancing, at the same time there were also people trying to eat, was it a bar to enjoy a drink, was it a club with a DJ or was it a restaurant??? It seemed to be a little bit of all but not excelling in any! Safe to say we had one drink then went somewhere else, I may return another day to see what it’s like then but it’s not high on my list of recommendations.

Start with the good The staff are lovely, and lots of screens if you want to watch sports. Booked a table for 08 today to watch the premiership game and get lunch. Unfortunately the kitchen was 'broken' so no food (we could order in, which is ok), but a lot of the beers were 'off'. The toilets in this place are real poor, and there is no hand soap (mentioned 03 times to staff over a couple of hours. So food, off. Beers, off. Hand washing off. It's that kind of place now. It's ok, not a place to impress though

Visited here on a Thursday afternoon and it was empty, we were the only people in there. The barman was lovely and was running around making himself very busy! We didn’t eat, although the food is amazing here. But the cocktails were lovely.... highly recommend candy floss and they were 241. The pool table isn’t great, it’s a bit wonky and has no black ball! Haha

Visited pennyblacks has excellent food and drinks would recommend it to anyone looking for a night out in Birmingham city centre with work or friends.

Great location but suffered from lack of staff. A busy Thursday night and only one member of staff serving drinks. She did her best but, with a group ordering cocktails, there were several of us waiting to be served. Basic bar management would improve this place enormously.

Hey my name it’s Ryan We been on that pub with my family the manger there was so horrible her name it's Emma I think she been shout of one lovely staff there front of all the people he was going to make us have some fun to put some music on and we feel so sorry for him because of us that person shout on him and she is so rough to the costumer so I will never go there any more even if I will miss that stuff all the staff they was so nice and so friendly but her she is very bad and we spend lots money there when we want to dance she tourn music off that’s mean she don’t like her job anyway I thanks all the stuff who make me and my family happy there

I came here with my mother before heading on over to Birmingham Hippodrome for a quick bit to eat and a few cocktails prior to watching the show. Having explained to the staff that we were in a little bit of a hurry with only an hour before our show started, they were sure to give us a speedy service whilst still offering a service of pure quality. Our sever, a young mixed race man, went the extra mile personally recommending cocktails that he thought we would enjoy after telling him our preferred taste and being indecisive; a huge shoutout to him and his extremely friendly smile. The ones he advised were exactly to our tastes and were especially worth the money thanks to their 241 offer. Having order a selection of chips and fries along with pizza, our food was absolutely delicious and rather filling. I would recommend Pennyblack to everyone and will certainly be heading back after this excellent experience!

A nice relaxed atmosphere and clean.We were serviced by a lovely gentleman handmade wonderful, tasty cocktails.

We came in at quarter to ten and ordered two cocktails and paid £17 as the 2 for 1 cocktails advertised outside were no longer available We were told after we ordered that they were closing at ten although their website advertises drinks until 11. We requested the pool cues only to be told "I'm going to have to say no to the pool" as we went to sit with our overpriced drink the lights were turned to full power to clearly push us out. Wonderful nightcap

Just to say a big thank you to Nicola , the manager at Pennyblacks. We had a party yesterday which coincided with Englands football match . Nicola was good to her word and did everything that she said she would . The service and attitude of the staff was first class and the food was spot on . Great location and atmosphere . We just dropped in for a drink before dinner elsewhere. This place is great for sports and has a great selection of drinks. A little pricey though.

More staff than customers and still struggle to get served at the bar. Walked in and was asked what i wanted said we had booked a table and the girl behind the bar just said “I don’t know” well if you don’t know ask someone that does then maybe?? Then she went and stood talking to her mate and staring at guys, then when another member of staff came over I asked for a lime and lemonade and the bar guy wandered off and never came back, asked another member of staff for the drink again and got served. Food was ok but over priced for what it was the football was on and the tv kept losing connection. The girl that served the food was lovely though although the order was slightly wrong the fact that she was helpful and polite made the difference and maybe the rude girl behind the bar could learn her customer service skills from her!

Visited after being out for Sunday lunch just for a drink having walked past many times and thought it looked inviting. The inside was interesting with tributes to its history as a sorting office & nice view out onto the canals. The focus now is sport with big screens & pool table & you can imagine it gets busy & loud when events are in full swing. When we there on a Mothering Sunday afternoon there were a couple of families obviously just meeting up & a group of stags so not busy at all. I think the polite term for the staff was indifferent as a mere smile or some kind customer service was not on offer. Drinks were expensive. Sadly disappointed by the whole experience.

Reminds me of an American bar but on the canals of Birmingham . Great for casual drinks and food after work or a place to start before moving onto some of the many great bars nearby . Pricier than the average pub - 10.00 for two bottles of corona

Came in here on a Saturday afternoon after a meal with the girls. Looks good and pretty interesting from the outside, but the atmosphere inside was just non-existent. We were unlucky enough to be in there when a football match was on and the TV's...

Went here with a friend to watch a bit of Saturday evening football. Screens everywhere so you never need to miss any action. Great atmosphere but the drinks are a tad pricey. Overall though, it was a fairly decent night bit would only recommend it...

I came to Pennyblacks on a Saturday afternoon and overall I was impressed by the location, which is on the outside of the Mailbox, and the interior of the venue as well as it having lots of screens for football. On the other hand though...

Have just been here with a few work colleagues. Last time I was in they had a reasonably priced cask ale or two, making it a decent venue for a few drinks. However, having ordered a pint of IPA, assuming it to be a normal IPA price, ie. around £4 at the most, I was asked for £6.20!

Fuimos allí dos noches seguidas, fisuras y comida y cerveza un buen ambiente para el fútbol y en la noche del miércoles donde estaba bastante llena. Un lugar estupendo en el canal y Pennyblack Pollo hamburguesa era de primera categoría.

Perfectamente bien para una copa y es un buen lugar para encontrarse con amigos. Pensé que sería un poco blokey pero no en todos. La comida es bastante normalito, nada diferente o emocionante. El servicio era agradable en todo. Lo mejor es la ubicación detrás del buzón donde se puede acceder fácilmente al parque y disfrutar de un paseo por el canal antes de comer

He comido aquí antes, pero no durante unos años, mi hija y yo acababa de terminar un viaje por el museo y me sugirió venir a Pennyblacks para comer. Ella tiene no aquí antes y nos encantó el lugar cuando llegamos. Nos las arreglamos para conseguir una mesa cerca de la ventana, así que tenía una vista excelente de todo el tráfico, ya que cuando narrowboat y hacia el canal. Pedimos algunas bebidas y ambos pedimos los perros american caliente. Cuando llegaron eran enormes, con un buen cruce de criss de salsa de tomate y mostaza y cebollas. También vine con un aliño de ensalada, patatas fritas y delgado. Buena comida y buen gusto a un precio muy razonable. Tuvimos un fantástico almuerzo seguido de un bonito chill y otra copa de vino viendo el mundo. por fuera. Este es un lugar muy popular para comer y beber, hay una zona de estar exterior y un par de mesas de billar en el interior. Gran selección de vinos, cervezas y licores en oferta. Si no has visitado este lugar me sugirió que ponerlo en tu lista cuando visite Birmingham y estoy seguro que no te decepcionará.

Went here for a birthday meal , given a choice of tables we wanted , waitress was pleasant, food was lovely and worth the money

4 of us went to Pennyblacks for one of our best friends 21st. When we arrived we were served by a lovely waiter who showed us to our table and even went to search for candles to put in a dessert for our friend! The drinks came which were lovely (I had the Bubbleguum martini). The starters then came and we ordered nachos and doughballs. We were told by our new waitress (who was also the manager, named nicola) that the nachos were a large portion size that would be enough for 4 of us - she was very wrong! They only were enough for 2 of us, so it was lucky we ordered dough balls as well. After starters, 2 of us decided to order the 'Giant Pornstar' which was £25 thinking it would definitely live up to its name! The only thing giant about it was the glass, which was half empty and NOT worth £25. So I wouldn't recommend getting that! Then came the mains. When they arrived they look so so good! We couldnt wait to eat them, so we took some pictures and dived in. As I took a bite into my chicken kebab I saw something black crawling around in the salad and it then emerged onto the plate! It turned out to be a beetle and I have never felt so sick, I said to everyone else stop eating theres a bug in my food. We got the manager, Nicola over again and said look at this. She offered to move us and change all our food, but to be honest by that point we had no appetite and just wanted to get out. All I can say is the way Nicola, THE MANAGER dealt with us was appalling. She refused to take drinks of the bill that had not been drank at all and left. She then began to shout at us, saying that she does not know where the bug came from and that how did she know it came from my food! I can prove that it came from my food, because before we ate we took a picture of our food and if you zoom in you can see the big black bug sitting on top of my salad! We were so shocked and angry with the way we were treated, especially by a manager who told us she had been there 10 years. The way she handled the situation was out of order, she was not professional at all and how can you shout at customers?! Afterwards, we were dealt with the same lovely waiter who showed us to our table and he was genuinely so calm and kept apologising - which nicola, the manager did not do ONCE. To sum it up, we were left hungry, shocked and just disappointed with the service we received from Nicola. If you are looking to eat somewhere before you go out in the Mailbox, this is not the place! its more of a sports bar and we felt so dressy!

A large group of us popped in to Pennyblacks to watch the football. We also ended up having dinner in there.There are lots of large screen TVs scattered around the bar, with a mixture of table and chairs and sofas. The food was very good. A bit expensive, but that is what you expect from a bar in the Mailbox.Overall we all had a great evening.

We travelled from Bradford to Birmingham for a work event, there was 8 people in our party altogether at roughly 8pm. We sat in the restaurant and waited 15 minutes until someone came to take our drinks order. We than waited another 30/40mins until we had to get up and ask a member of staff to take our order since it was about 9pm by this point and we were all starving. The waiter took our order who was very pleasant but then we had a wait of 1 hour before our food came to the table. Other people who had arrived after us were getting their food before us. We saw the burgers sat under the heat lamp for about 25mins until they were brought to the table. Luckily, when we eventually got our food it was very nice, especially the mac and cheese although the garlic bread was disappointing. Busy bar located on the bottom level of the Mailbox development out by the canalside. Very popular and great atmosphere. Atmospheric surroundings in converted brick arches. Good bar food and helpful service. A destination in itself and the best bar in that development.

The food at Penny Blacks is great. To start we had nachos which were some of the best I've eaten in a while, then fish and chips for main. The fish was lovely and soft with not too much batter. Staff are friendly, the atmosphere is nice and chilled out.

Had such a good time here on a random Saturday night in May. DJ was great and drinks were worth a visit !

Came here for my nieces birthday celebration, lovely place with a nice atmosphere. Although we didn't sample the food, the range of beverages was impressive. The staff were very friendly, will be coming back soon

Wanted to go somewhere with friends to watch the Rugby. Pennyblacks ticked all the boxes. Comfy seating. Great view for the large screen tv's. no lengthy queues at the bar. Friendly staff. Deffo a great meeting place.

The canal side setting and a very good beer choice are the main drawer. It's a smart venue that has great seating. Tall tables or cosy sofas. Perfect for a night out with a large group. Was last stop before keg and grill which can be easily reached

Nice location out back of Mailbox. Although normally a big food place it was a great location for the 6 nations rugby which was being shown on many screens. Friendly staff serving a couple of acceptable ales.

Penny blacks is a traditional pub in the mailbox development. Does a good range of draft beers and cider. Unpretentious.

Came in here for drinks for my mates 40th and a double celebration as she has just over cancer. They could not of done enough. What a lovely bunch of people. Amy, Abel and Matt made us feel very welcome. Great place :)

This occasion was a Friday glass of beer (or in my case red wine) after the working week. The team I work with usually drop in (our office is in The Cube, directly above Penny Black's) after work on a Friday and we meet up with a recently retired member of the team.

Ridiculously expensive, food is average. Cocktails are poor, barmaid is rude. Sound appealing? We've been here a number of times but it has gone downhill more recently.

i arrived with friends who had never been for a late lunch and was greeted with a smile and hello from a woman behind the bar. apart from a few other people it was pretty much empty.we found our own seats and settled in well before ordering our drinks.the booths are comfortable and clean, although one friend found the step a little too high for her to step down.we thought we had decided on our food until we were informed of special deals they had on offer-a vast variety. it took a reasonable amount of time for our food to arrive and when it did we could see why. everything was fresh and presented very well. everything was cooked very well. even the salad was fresh and very cold- the little things.we spent a lot of time there and left just before the after work rush. the staff were very friendly.my friends were very impressed with the place we will be back!

My friends and I visited penny blacks after a meal in the cube, we was surprised at how queit it was as it was one other party and ourselves, the drinks were reasonably priced and as you expect a cocktail bar to be. I would recommend this bar, but perhaps on a day it would be more busy, to allow a good atmosphere.

Just another pub at the city centre of Birmingham, no ambiance at all. And since it's at the Mailbox, food and drinks are expensive. We just went there for a few drinks. My mate likes their sweet potato fries.

Stopped here for a few drinks whilst in Birmingham on business. Firstly, the do not allow you to run a tab - I have never come across this before ever. Secondly a bottle of prosecco costs £30. Outrageous price. Go somewhere cheaper.

Visited today with my friend for my birthday, went in had a look at the drinks menu, only one other customer in the whole building! Decided on a drink from the menu to be told he has no idea where I got the menu from its over a year old, which I replied here on the bar! I then asked for a similar alternative to this drink for him to ignore the request and move on, we then waited for a further 5 minutes for him to come back to us and then told us to take a seat and he will charge it to the table! Terrible service, no interaction and lack of atmosphere

Food was fine, although nothing special. I enjoyed my chilli dog & the french fries it came with. I was very concerned at how short the beer measures were and didn't think the bar staff took requests for pints to be topped up very seriously. The beer quality was not good anyway so I certainly wouldn't visit the place again when there is so much choice locally.

I visited with a group of friends on a Friday evening. The table we booked we ready and waiting for us. The waiting staff were friendly and efficient bringing jugs of water without us requesting them and not trying to sell bottled water. The menu is pretty standard for a pub and pricing is again average. I would say the dimmed lighting is better for drinking than eating.

At a works leaving do and penny black's was the chosen venue after a lovely meal at Red peppers. As we settled there me and the girls wanted to ask the DJ what music they were going to play for the rest of the night. It was either a friend of the dj or a member of staff, but the ignorant being replied with 'Bhangra' then looked at his friend and laughed. Now, being Asian I found his comment offensive. I know DJ 's get a lot of music requests but there was absolutely no need for him to reply back with that comment. I will be taking it further. I didn't let his comment spoil my night as you will of course have simple minded people like him in this world we live in!

A quirky pub at the waters edge on the quay in the centre of Birmingham.Great food and great service with Multiple large Televisions, perfect for watching all the major sports, which they always show. When the weather is nice, sit by the waters edge outside and watch the day go by. Situated right next to the Postbox shopping centre, perfect for a visit after your shop.

The customer service at this place is awful. We had booked for a group of us to eat to celebrate a birthday. From the moment we arrived we were met by the the most miserable member of staff who didn't crack a smile once the whole time we were there and clearly needs training in customer service skills. The food was great except for one of the meals. When we received our bill it included a suggested service charge of 10% which after some debate we decided not to pay as we felt the service we received was appalling. We paid our bill in cash and I checked we had the exact correct amount 3 times before handing it over to this miserable waitress. We all left and as we were outside walking away we were chased down by the restaurant manager who shouted he needed to speak to us now. I have never been so embarrassed, as the area was packed and people were staring. I and a couple of us went back and asked what the problem was, we were told we had underpaid on the bill by £12. We asked them to check again, this miserable waitress then counted the money again as we checked against the bill, it was clear she was wrong and had herself got mixed up between the total and the suggested service charge, but instead of apologising for chasing us down like common criminals, she tried to save face by saying the cash was 12p out. I knew she was still wrong but I was so angry I took out 20p and told her to keep the change. The manager didn't apologise and made some flippant comment about I know it's only 12p but its 12p out at the end of the day and then he walked off. Safe to say we will never go back there again !!

Stopped here for a quick drink after eating somewhere else. On the whole it was okay, drinks were reasonable, we were served quickly and it was very busy. Could have been a bit cleaner. Tables were left covered in dirty plates long after people had gone, sitting around other peoples leftovers isn't my idea of a nice night out but on the whole it was okay.

Whilst ordering a drink at the bar the staff were very grumpy & rude. I felt like it was made out to be such an effort to make my drink! The food looked amazing & the atmosphere was good but the employees let the place down!!

Utterly abysmal staff attitude towards work and customers. Customer service none existent working behind the bar. Slow and lethargic, some staff not knowing how to make some drinks which slows up orders. Employees were too interested in their appearance and mobile phones!!

I had to sort out a meal for my nieces 21st birthday within a week for nearly 30 people! Lastmin.com!Nicola was so helpful and made room for us all.We preordered our food. It is pub grub but the prices are soooo good for town. Not one complaint, everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food and said they would 100% come back to Penny Blacks!! Everyone found their dinners tasty and any special requirements were catered for no problems.Everything ran smoothly, food came out as expected, no hiccups. Cannot fault the service at all!! The bar does get busy but that is expected for the mailbox. That will be the case anywhere you go so...Big thank you's for attending to us and doing such a great job. X

Very inexpensive meal when buying two meals. Lovely food and large portions as well. The staff were very helpful and even took our order from the table instead of us going to the bar to order

Use Penny Blacks as a meeting place prior to a crawl around the city centre. Early evening and the bar was already four deep with mainly half drunk customers. Service is so slow. The bar staff's time is taken up making cocktails which seem to take forever. I was passed by several times to people who had just gotten to the bar. When I was finally served the order of four drinks was completely wrong. the drinks are also very expensive. Would I visit again? Only if I was dragged across burning coals.

We went to Penny Blacks as a surprise for our nieces 21st birthday, a surprise set up by her Mom. Penny Blacks cornered off a corner section of the bar for the evening, the food provided looking lovely (I never tried anything though because I'm on a healthy eating kick at the moment) the atmosphere, the staff and everything was really lovely. It really was a total surprise for her. A really lovely evening!

Try the fish and home chips, it's great. In the summer sitting overlooking the cable, this is a great place for a pint and a pub lunch.

Today I had a steak wrap with sweet potato fries and it was lovely, also the the waiter who severed us was very helpful i would defo return back. :)

My boyfriend and I both ordered cocktails and we ended up with a glass of ice each. There was nothing in the description about the overload of ice. Both of us had to leave our overpriced slush's as the brain freeze was to much for us. Also the barmaid could do with learning how to smile

A so so place over priced , but expectation I would expect but it's all rather bland , the whole experience will not be remembered which is a shame as if it was a little more enthusiastic about its approach it would be even better.

We stayed locally and decided to try out some of the bars in the Mailbox - This place was really good in design and service. I think personally the Football on every TV with sound was a little OTT but it does say it is a Sports Bar on the window so maybe to be expected.

Over priced drinks, average food and awful sport coverage!! The blue screen of death was constant for a single football match
