A spectacular hotel. We feel lucky to have had the opportunity to have stayed here. Rooms were spotlessly clean, the bathrooms were fantastic (had a lovely long soak in the roll top baths). Boutique hotels try to recreate these features, this hotel has them for real. The staff were so polite, professional and helpful, showing us to the outside swimming lake and sauna. I can’t say enough to praise this gem of a hotel. I strongly recommend booking here. Excellent cask ale at the bar too Helpful notes: Breakfast is at 8:30 Dinner is at 7:30 There is WiFi

Spent a lovely evening here with family playing monopoly until closing time. The bar man and the chef are super friendly, the place is incredibly cosy and full of history. It was the highlight of our trip. Definitely stop here for a visit if you want a memorable experience.

It was 'very' closed when I went there at lunch time today. Car park chained off, note on front door saying 'residents only'. Couldn't see / find anyone around to ask. Website looks like you can stay there ? But (as far as I could tell) not open for non-resident guests to call in for a meal ? No idea if 'permanently closed' .... or I just struck it on an off day !

This place is proudly unchanged since the Everest expedition trained there....that applies fully to the cook. Prices are roughly double what they should be and the quality is low. Chef should be given a massive wake up call that food has moved on. Bland soup...miserly portions... inedible porridge...thin cardboard bread...hugely overpeppery sauce on the pork...slapped out puddings...it's lazy and bad. Go for a pint Fter your walk to see the place but don't eat.

Went there today with a friend to show them the history of the place and to have a drink and a meal if possibld after a hard day on the hill. Wanted to pop into the residents lounge to see some of the artefacts. Told residents only . Understandable I guess to a point but the attitude stank .No need for it . Didn't even get the drink order right .There were 2 of us ffs. Won't be calling again in a hurry .

Stopped for lunch, which was quite good (I recommend the Welsh Black Burger), but this is a shabby place, living in the past and on its connection with the 1953 Mt.Everest expedition. It's the only time I have walked into a pub and encountered a barmaid who did not know what draft beer is! But it was the generally surly and unhelpful attitude of the employees that I disliked. I asked for the wifi code, but I was told this is "for residents only", which was quite a bore in an area which seems to have little if anything by way of a mobile phone signal. All of this makes me rather sad, as it used to be such a jolly place from which to walk and climb. But until someone boots the Pen y Gwryd into the 21st century's standards of customer service, I would counsel fellow travellers to take their custom elsewhere.

Visited this famous pub today and noticed there was no welcome or friendly smile from the staff. The pub itself is charming, the fire was blazing and we especially came to see Sir Edmund Hillary's signature as we are from New Zealand. It wasn't busy and a friendly smile would go a long way.

Just back from 2 nights here with 14 friends for a 40th birthday. First comment, is that it's perfect for a walk to Snowdon. We left the hotel and could walk up the new path to the car park to start the Pyg Track so it's great to not stress about cars. The hotel itself is quaint and full of character. The staff are amazing with a great warm welcome and friendly demeanour. Now, if you are wanting 5 star facilities and pristine condition then this isn't the place for you. The rooms are basic and bathroom facilities functional (hot water was a problem at peak times), and with no phone signals and poor wi-fi you'd better make sure your party all know where they are going prior to arriving. The food is up to par and I loved the whole "gong dining" where they announced the fixed time dining. 8.30am for Breakfast and 7.30pm for Dinner. It creates a very social environment and adds some structure to the day. Despite these quirks (or perhaps because of them) there is something very charming about this hotel. The smoke room (obviously non-smoking now) was a lovely place for a post walk beer or three and the reception room with its sofas and roaring fire was perfect for a glass of red to relax. We'll definitely be back!!!

As avid hikers & the history of this hotel, relating to the Everest Expeditions We were excited to pop in for a drink & hopefully a meal as in the area. We were welcomed at the reception window replete with beer pumps, doubles as bar! Drinks ordered, we enquired about WiFi, For Residents only came reply, oh. Went to sit in Lounge area, Sorry that's For Residents only, oh, We tried to enter snug area behind bar/reception, you've guessed it, Sorry Residents Only! A little perplexed & feeling slightly crestfallen with the experience so far. Where are We allowed to sit I enquired? In there, room pointed to, at least this was the famed Everest Room replete with signatures of many famous trekkers. We decided to forgo a meal by this point. Its rather a shame to be met with this experience, the place didn t seem particularly busy & could do with some modernisation & redecoration. I guess they only want Residents to get the full Experience!

The hotel restauarant does a lovely 3 or 5 course meal. You choose the courses from a set menu. The soups are particularly good. The cheese selection is also good. The main has a choice of two and there is a cold starter. Plus very good coffee for after dinner in the residents' lounge or the Smoke Room. Breakfasts are hardy two course affairs. Lunch can be ordered from the bar.The chili seems always to sell out.The beer is good and the wine selection perfectly adequate.

The emphasis is on fuelling and refuelling walkers and climbers. Portions are mountainous but this is simple good food cooked with care and love. Of note on my two-night stay were the slow-cooked brisket and the chicken and leek pie. Served with vegetables piled as high as adjacent Snowdon. A selective but good quality wine list. The hearty puddings will finish you off and leave you contented on the sofa in front of the log fire with a Penderyn whisky and coffee. Service is chatty and warm. Sleep on it then repeat same experience with full Welsh breakfast. Highly recommend - mainly for resident guests but they do allow outsiders if they have room. Recommend highly.

We went to the PyG for a dinner of the Alpine Ski Club in November and it was marvellous to be back at this iconic hotel which I have been visiting for about 40 years. The same small bar and behind it the residents bar with guests swarming about with dogs under their feet. The various rooms downstairs have not changed over the years - the signatures of the legendary mountaineers are still on the ceiling - and the cabinet of Everest memorabilia is still there. Our dinner was typical PyG fare and good enough - especially for hungry climbers and walkers. I am pleased that the owners manage to retain the charm of the place and its slow pace in these rather frantic times.

Looking for the standard hotel experience, such as choosing the time you eat, having a menu, being able to lock your door, or a tv in the room, look somewhere else! This place is like going back in time, with a set meal time (19:30) with a set 3 course dinner priced £25. You get called for dinner by the ringing gong which is quite amusing. The doors don't have keys, they never have, and our door didn't lock from the inside either. Breakfast is 8-8:30 which is quite old fashioned and inflexible. All that said, it adds to the charm. The hotel is a beautiful building with log fires, the staff we very helpful and you can order a quick breakfast (coffee, fruit, toast) earlier than 8 if needed. The location is perfect and the views and walks around are amazing. The history of the place is fantastic to read. All in all if you are a keen walker and looking to break with the modern world for a while I recommend this place.

I have been a regular customer to the Pen Y Gwryd bar over many, many years of hiking in Snowdonia and has become THE place within our family that we always have to stop in for a pint or we just haven't 'been' climbing!I first visited as a young child (just one the fizzy pop then!) and decided I was going to climb Everest just like all those that had signed the ceiling before me. 30 years on and I haven't quite managed Everest, but I have managed every summit in Snowdonia and have stopped into the Pen Y Gwryd for a well earned pint of delicious local ale each and every time.A great location, open fires, climbing photos, boots, axes, pictures everywhere. A warm proper pub vibe on the wettest of Welsh days. I just love the place.

An isolated traditional mountain inn with great character and interest. Rooms and food are available, but we only stopped for coffee, which was very good. The place is a centre for climbers and has objects, photos and graffiti from the days of Hillary's expedition. There are lots of small, dark and cosy rooms, some decorated with climbing boots hanging from the ceiling! Worth a stop!

This old inn situated in the heart of Snowdonia has a wonderful panorama over hills, valleys and lakes. It was used as a base by the mountaineers training for the assault on Mount Everest led by Sir John Hunt. The rooms have not changed since those days and signatures of the climbers are on the ceiling of one of the rooms, old boots hang from a beam in another and photographs of historic moments hang on the walls. If you are after "posh nosh" this is not the place for you, but if you enjoy good helpings of local produce cooked plain and simple you will be happy here. Locally brewed real ale is also on offer. A real blast from the past and friendly staff.

The combination of cosy old world charm with great food and friendly service in the very heart of Snowdonia is hard to beat. We have passed by this place many times and have always wanted to pop in for dinner so we left it to our last night in the area. We arrived at 7.45 and received a very warm welcome, but as we hadn't read the reviews we didn't realise it was only one sitting of a minimum 3 course menu. We were too late for the 7.30 sitting and as there is no other food available we didn't even stay for a drink. Shame.

I have been visiting the PyG for over 40 years and love going back. On Saturday 30th May a group of us had made a great crossing of Crib Goch before reaching a very crowded summit of Snowdon. We later stopped at the PyG for a couple of pints on the way home and I felt the place was looking in good shape. There was lots of fresh paint and yet they had sensibly kept much of the fabric which makes this historic place so famous. The man who served us was a member of the Pullee family and the grandson of the late Chris Briggs who ran the hotel for very many years. The PyG has a certain Marmite factor - either you love it or you don't. I certainly love it.

Great little hotel with an impressive history of British mountaineering. Located in the heart of snowdonia, a stones throw from snowdon the glyders, the hotel is perfectly situated for walking and mountaineering.Rooms are rustic but well kept and comfortable. We did not have our own bathroom but instead shared a large authentic Victoria bathroom and toilet with a few other rooms. You are summoned to a hearty breakfast each morning by a gong after which you leave fully invigorated and ready to tackle any peak ( we chose the mighty tryfan). On returning in the evening you are greater by warm welcoming staff, and after a few well earned refreshments the gong summons you again for a hearty 5 course meal. Which featured the largest cheese board I have ever seen. The collection of mountain in artefacts in the hotel add a lot of character to the place. Unfortunately their famous Tibetan shrunken head was away for financial evaluation when we visited.Overall a brilliant holiday and all for a very reasonable price. Highly recommend and will be returning in the New Year

Nothing we could not cook ourselves at home. I guess if you have been out walking on the mountains all day you would be satisfied with the 5 courses set before you for £30.A gong is heard at 7.30pm for the single sitting and diners make there way to the dining room. The place oozes history of bygone days and was the training base for the first accent of Mt Everest in 1953. We were really excited about going to this place, a set menu with a 7.30 sitting heralded by a GONG, all sounded fun. What a disappointment it was. The starter of soup was fine, followed by beef and ale pie (sounds great). The meat in the pie needed several hours more cooking (I put it in a napkin for the dog) and the puff pastry was totally undercooked. For pudding we had rhubarb trifle - again sounds good. Masses of cream following very sour rhubarb made it pretty disgusting.A surprise to see other people eating the above, we can only assume they had been on a long trek and were desperate for ANYTHING, failing that they must have been used to very poor cooking.ALL THIS FOR £25, not. Exactly cheap, would have preferred a macdonald Don't go if you have any sort of a palate.

We called today at 11.50 and wanted to stay for lunch, but we weren't even allowed to look at the menu until they started serving at 12.00 and felt we were actually being a nuisance for asking! What a shame, we've spent many a happy time in the Pen y Gwryd in the past, the perfect place to land after a long walk.... but the place could now do with quite a lot of tlc and a warm welcome wouldn't go amiss!

Awful experience. We arrived around 2 pm, and we asked what the soup was. We were told it was Parsnip and immediately ordered. The member of staff went to the kitchen to ask something and then came out to say they are no longer serving food. We found this odd given that she had just confirmed the soup with the kitchen, and the cafe is open until 4 pm. Fair enough if we were trying to order at 3.45pm, but this was at 2pm. We ordered coffees and welsh cakes, which took 20 minutes to come (cafe was empty, save for ourselves). The rude member of staff then slammed them on the table, didn't even take the items off the tray, and walked off. Never have I had such an awful customer service experience. Complete letdown to what is a lovely area.

An out-of-town farm/campsite/farmshop. Reasons for 5* = service (friendly), quality (.take a look round the shop), price (very good value) . I thought this was a lovely place. As a family we’d all happily revisit. Good value for the quality of produce. In Leeds (where we come from) could charge a lot more. We’d happily happily revisit

A most welcoming local pub with an excellent chef who happily adapted starters into a main for me - veggie! Although menu catered for everyone. Mine hosts were so cheerful & hardworking - many could take a leaf out of their books! The place was absolutely buzzing with people of all ages - locals & holidaymakers having the time of their lives singing along to the live musician of the evening who sang everything from Beatles/John Denver to modern day...talented chap! We will definitely be back - next time we may stay if not during the summer months, perhaps for an Autumn/Spring walking holiday!
