I think the owners of this hotel are the nicest people I have met in wales. Supper hospitable and I was even able to get a room 2 hours in advance. Truly, words are too short to describe how well you are treated here. Thank you very much Brian and Angela.

Stopped at this wonderful place in the car park overnight in our Motorhome. Brian was very helpful and couldn’t be more welcoming. Excellent price for parking for the whole weekend plus a day visitor. Emailed initially and quickly replied with phone number and card payment. Had a swim in the lake and a great walk up Cadair Idris. If Carlsberg made Motorhome stops. 👍

A truly amazing place, in an amazing part of Wales. These types of B&B’s are sadly few & far between these days. It’s not a 5* Hilton, but that’s not what it claims to be or what anyone should expect in this venue. It’s well equipped and is perfectly suited to its environment. We’ve been a good few times over the last 15 years and I’ve never experienced anything of the negative reviews below….!!? As for the people complaining about the carpark charges - I can only assume they are just bitter that they were caught out and had to pay. The charge is CLEARLY signposted on the way in & it’s obvious you are on private land. Find a better setting for a picnic for £5 or a place to camp for £10 a night….! You’ll pay more for 1/2 day in most scenic carparks in Wales. As for the comments about the abuse & aggression - personally I find it impossible to believe. I’ve enjoyed many drinks with the owners and spent 20 mins talking to Andrea (I think is the Lady’s name) just last week. (While we stopped off on our way through in our campervan). The hotel industry has been shattered by the events of the last few years, any business still open deserves credit and is clearly reliant on a costumer base for support. To believe that the owners run around shouting abuse at potential customers is just ridiculous. I don’t have any vested interest in this review whatsoever - I’m a Londoner who’s been visiting Wales since I was a child, this is one of the places I return to whenever I’m in Wales. I could see the distress on the faces of the owners when they explained about some of the comments recently - I wanted to share my decade plus of positive experience and reassure any potential visitors to stop off, have lunch and enjoy the view for the sake of £5/Stay in their camper-van for £10 a night/Book a room in the hotel. We will be back next time we pass, without a doubt!

Avoid this hotel at all costs!! My baby was screaming terribly on our long car journey so we decided to pull over to try and calm him down! Within seconds of the car stopping and my partner getting out of the car, he was approached by a very rude women who was yelling that we couldn’t park there, my partner tried to explain that our little boy was very worked up and we just needed a couple of minutes to try to calm him down, the lady was extremely rude refusing that we could use the car park as a place to do this! My partner had our 5 year old daughter beside him as the women (Angela) was shouting at him, my partner just explained that I needed a few minutes just to change his bottom! within a couple of minutes a man came charging very aggressively towards my partner getting in his face and shouting that we needed to leave… my partner got his phone out to record for protection as the man (Brian) was very angry, Brian got so aggressive that his wife had to stand infront of him and push him back, telling him to calm down! Our little girl was very upset due to this altercation as she saw the whole thing whilst she stood by her dad, this was really not needed as I already had one very worked up baby and then had another because of some very rude inconsiderate people!! Avoid at all costs, horrible people!!

Stayed for a couples holiday for 4 nights. Immediately as we arrived hospitality was fabulous. Enjoyed a wine and beer in a beautiful lake-side beer garden. Breakfast included was hearty, homemade and delicious. Angela and Brian were the perfect hosts, friendly and accommodating - including delicious ham rolls made for us when we left early on a Sunday for Snowdon. Very knowledgeable about the local area. Perfect location, stunning views and 30 min walk away from the start of Cader Idris. Only fault is couldn’t function shower (heat or power) and little air flow through the room meant for very hot nights!

So happy we found this lovely Inn. It's a great base for exploring the Cader Idris range of hills and walks, driving down to Aberdovey or visiting the Tywyn Railway and maybe even Llywelyn's Castell y Bere. Strict Covid rules are maintained, which is assuring and done seamlessly. The food is sublime - the breakfast in particular is beyond scrumptious - the bacon and sausages are the best in Wales (supplied by Rikki Lloyd of Welshpool). Altogether a great experience, brilliant hosts in Angela and Brian - we are already looking forward to our next visit.

I know businesses are being very tentative when opening after COVID but surely a pub needs some ales on draught? Mostly bottles but lets be fair you're paying for the stunning view which is second to none. Cash only if under £10 so be prepared (although this is against Mastercard and Visa's T&C's). Why not sort this out so passing travellers like myself can nip in for a quick drink without having to worry about having cash? No-one uses it these days - especially in the midst of a pandemic!

Due to the fact that myself and my husband were residing here for a couple of nights, we decided to have a meal here. I had ordered the vegetarian madras and my husband had the steak and ale pie. Both meals were delicious and my husband was even eating my chips! However, we loved our meals so much so that we dined here again and my husband ordered the same pie. Although I opted for the lamb pie, but forgotten to get a photo. Will definitely be returning, once myself and my husband are back in the area!

Booked her for our anniversary. Location perfect Quiet and out of the way Greeted by the owner Angela who gave us a very warm welcome and showed us to our room. We were the only ones booked in that night due the bad weather and very high winds. This did not matter and we were asked if we’d like to have dinner Felt bad that they were just cooking for us but nothing was too much trouble We came down for dinner where a fire had been lit for us so it was very cosy. Menu was basic but reasonably priced and very tasty Scoffed the lot! A good nights sleep followed by a freshly cooked breakfast with plenty of toast and refills of coffee and tea Angela gave us some ideas of places to go on our way home i.e Castell y bere Very pretty ruins Angela and Brian were perfect hosts and huge Game of Thrones fans so we had a lot to talk about Thank you for making our stay a memorable one

Visited the Pen y Bont hotel for a light lunch on a dry but cloudy day. We received a friendly welcome from the proprieters, we both enjoyed a pint of real ale on the patio overlooking the beatiful Talyllyn lake, we chose the patio rather than the grassed beer garden since it was more sheltered, it was a little windy that day. This was followed by an excellent light lunch the highlight of which was the Welsh Rarebit which both myself and my wife would heartily recommend. We will have no hesitation in returning in the near future.

This hotel was handy to split up out drive to Wales. It was very basic and a little tired but the bed was amazing..... the biggest bed I have ever seen in the UK and so comfortable, best nights sleep I have had in a long time. The hotel staff were friendly too. The restaurant is next door in a pub and offer hotel guests a 10% discount. The food was reasonable but quite limited in choice. Breakfast was very typical but plentiful.

We stayed at Pen y Bont in June for my birthday. In pictures it looked much better than in reality. I am not always in favour of this type of heritage buildings. Room was OK but the dinning area didn't feel too welcoming and we couldn't use the garden seating because dogs are not allowed. This deterred me even more. The area is so pretty that it compensates for it all. We still enjoyed the stay.

We stopped here for the night on the way home after walking up Snowdon earlier in the day.We had booked earlier, giving a approximate time of arrival. Plenty of parking just outside the hotel overlooking a large lake. We were welcomed, shown the room and told to ask if there was anything we required. We decided to have a drink in the beer garden which offers great view of the lake. Peaceful and relaxing. After a hot shower it was time for a few drinks, and an evening meal. We both had the garlic mushrooms, which were fantastic. We followed with one scampi, and one steak and ale pie, all delicious, reasonably priced and accompanied by a very drinkable bottle of red. The restaurant was fairly busy with everyone seeming to be enjoying their meals. We had a great sleep in the clean, spacious and comfortable room, followed by what I thought was the best breakfast I've had for ages. Local produce, and plenty of it.All in all a very comfortable stay made better by the friendly and helpful staff and owners. I must admit to being baffled by some of the earlier comments but can only report on our findings. I would certainly stay here again.

We have always admired the location of this hotel and have stopped for a drink once on the way back from Aberdovey. We always intended to have a longer stay next time. Not anymore. My husband and a work colleague were driving home to Shrewsbury after a business meeting when my husband's car broke down near the hotel. Without any mobile phone signal, they asked the barmaid of the hotel if they could use the phone to contact the breakdown service. To give her credit, the barmaid very kindly showed them to the phone in the kitchen. But whilst he was making the call, the owner (Brian) stormed in saying that, thanks to my husband's call, he had been disconnected from the bank actually using the words "I do have a business to run, you know". My husband apologised profusely but explained that he was kindly told he could use it by the barmaid, to which Brian responded "Well, she shouldn't have said that!". I'm speaking now to the barmaid - you seriously need to find a better employer. It sounds like you're much underrated there!Brian followed this up by "Finish your call and give the barmaid £1". THIS IS ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL - especially when you bear in mind that the RAC is a FREEPHONE number!!It is such a shame as this hotel really is in a beautiful location and, if only it was run by people who had an ounce of common decency, I'm sure it would be a great place to stop.I can see other reviews about this Brian's shocking behaviour and, in light of the above, I can safely say I am not surprised. I will NEVER again visit this hotel - certainly not whilst it is run by the same owners - and I am making sure I tell everyone I know not to do the same (as you can imagine, being fairly local in Shrewsbury, a lot of people here know it well and now know to steer clear!)Avoid at all costs! You have been warned...And Brian - enjoy your £1! I hope it was worth it!

Popped into the hotel when on a walk through the area.Beer garden looked a bit tatty with lots of empty glasses, and too many no dogs signs. This was better than the interior of a very old and dark hotel. We were booked in for the Saturday but Friday was an unplanned visit. The staff were very accommodating with us, we arrived fairly late. They put together a limited menu that they could not for us in the time allowed. One of our party was arriving later by train and would join us about 9.15 pm. They said they would prepare their food when they arrived. The food on both days was excellent and the warmth of their welcome and their accommodating ways were fantastic. We visited the restaurant and bar after a very eventful day to say the least - we were offered a comfortable place to unwind and a friendly personable experience. The owners were enthusiastic and upbeat, listened to us and served us with no rush. We had a room in the pub to ourselves, and were offered a spot on the sofa by the fire which they lit especially for us. They were so hospitable and made us feel so welcome. And the food was superb - we had the Cadir Idris and Snowdonia Burgers, and both were beautifully cooked, and the portions generous. The prices were spot on what they should be, and we were happy to add an extra tip as we were just so happy with the experience. The little welsh-flag cocktail sticks keeping the burgers together were a lovely little touch. The menu looked local and a little bit different to standard pub grub. Just a lovely, warm experience. Exactly how good service and good food should be. Thank you!

While on holiday we decided to treat ourselves to a steak meal and the pen-y-bont seemed idyllic next to the lake. It seemed to be on the expensive side but we don't mind paying for good quality food and thought that is what we would get for £20 for 8oz sirloin. What we actually received was terrible, there we no griddle marks on the steak it looked boiled and was swimming in a plate of oily/buttery liquid (we had asked for a knob or garlic butter on the steak to replace the mushrooms they didn't have). The chips were not home made and were unpleasant and the veg was overcooked to the point that the carrots turned to mush under the most gentle touch. I returned the food to the bar and asked for a refund, the waitress asked me to wait a moment and then the chef (Brian) came up from the kitchen, he was very aggressive, refusing to take any criticism/feedback and started shouting at me, he refused to refund us our meals. Honestly the quality of this meal was shocking but he seemed to believe that this was the best quality you could have. His partner Angela then came to see me and told Brian to go back to the kitchen, she said I had been sent by someone to trash their reputation and i could stand there all day because they would lock me in the building before giving us our money back. The chef came up a further 2 times to shout at me and was inches from my face waving food at me, it was quite a scary experience. All this went on for about 15 mins and I couldn't really believe what was happening. These people have ruined a beautiful place, please don't be taken in by them. Visited for Sunday lunch, usually advertised on board outside, but told no Sunday lunch. Four in a party requested same but then left. We decided on another meal, the meat of which was okay, the chips were not very good although another board outside had previously been advertising how good the chips were. The carrots, four batons which would hardly make one whole carrot, were pale, soft and unappealing. The location is stunning but let down by the appearance of the bar/restaurant with illuminated signs in the windows, weeds hugging the external walls and hanging baskets probably left over from last year. It needs a serious injection of cash and vision to bring it up to something that is worthy of the location. It would be an absolute gold mine.

A group of us recently spent the weekend camping, and had a wonderful time. We decided that after packing up we would go to our favourite restaurant for dinner, unfortunately it was fully booked, so we drove around and found this place. Each couple ordered their meals, which unfortunately we only had a choice of Turkey or lamb roast. My friend asked the barman if there was any chance that the chef could cook a plate of chips for the children to which the answer was no! So fair enough it wasn't an issue and the children had a dinner. The service was absolutely diabolical! We had to wait ages for the meals to start coming out in dribs and drabs. My husband and my friend were the only two that hadn't had their meals and everyone else had eaten theirs. So my friend went to the barman and said that they hadn't had their meals and in fact they didn't really want them now.The barman said he would have a look to see where the meals were and that he would get the manager, around 10minutes later the meals came out and they looked pathetic, they must have literary thrown the leftovers on their plates it was an insult!!! My friend only had two small pieces of lamb and the both of the meals looked messy but the barman was told that they didn't want the meals anymore and there was't any knives and forks given to them. Eventually the rude and patronizing wife manager came and said that she didn't know what the problem was!!! Her first excuse was that because couples had paid separately for their meals it was classed as separate tickets, that's fair enough but why was it that my friend and my husband hadn't had their meals when it was clear that myself and my husband had ordered together on the same ticket? Realistically the restaurant wasn't busy and they obviously couldn't cope. When that happens it's time to give up!!! She was very rude and argumentative! Not only that she wanted to have an argument about the chips we enquired about earlier!!! As far assume we are concerned they did forget the meals, that's why they were thrown on a plate. When one of our party took the little boy to the gents the grid had been raised, that's dangerous and the toilets were dirty. I really do not recommend this restaurant as the Service, Attitude of management, Quality of food really does need alot of attention and update, just like the toilets do. Very rude wife manager and she will say anything to get her own way and refuse to accept any responsibility. ABSOLUTELY NOT WORTH ANOTHER VISIT!!!!!!!!!!!

Popped in here for a drink and some time to sit outside and admire the gorgeous view of the lake. Friendly bar staff ( young girl) small glass of wine and a pint of Welsh ale was £5.80 I believe which isn't bad. The entrance to the pub bar at the side is a bit confusing as there is no signage and to the left on entering could do with a tidy and spruce up as could the toilets. Just minor niggle. That aside we had a good visit and will certainly be back...might eat there next time.

We stopped in for a pint our first night in the neighborhood. Good traditional ales on tap and a friendly bartender. We came back two evenings later for supper. The building looks a bit dilapidated, but a warm traditional pub inside. The food is good. Two of us had the steak and ale pie, another the shepherds pie. Both excellent. The pub also has several vegetarian entrees, much appreciated by our vegetarian member. If you're in the neighborhood definitely worth a stop. The beer is good, the food is good, and if the weather is nice the view of the lake is grand.

We would not of come in to this hotel to eat had we not read the reviews first on Tripadvisor. It is in a beautiful location , but the building itself is tired looking , and when you open the door to go in there is a large ,empty , cold room before you get to the bar area. However once inside , the young man behind the bar was very friendly and we were served quickly .I had the steak and ale pie and my hubby had gammon and egg. Huge portions of good old fashioned pub grub. No frills but very tasty and very filling!. I would eat here again .

We stopped off here for a bite to eat and found it to be a nice little pub in a lovely tranquil location by a lake. It's very 'traditional' inside, rather than these new pubs nowadays which are a sort of 'designer rustic' but it was perfectly adequate. We ordered the Steak and Ale pie, which had plenty of meat in it, a burger which was advertised as coming with a 'few' chips, and I had a starter of pate with a side portion of chips. They certainly don't skimp on the food! There were loads of chips (proper chips too, no frozen nonsense here!!) and the main dishes were a good hearty size. Prices are what you would generally expect to see in an upmarket gastro-pub, however I'm not sure it really lived up to the prices, but it was very filling, that's for sure! The lady behind the bar was pleasant, as was the chap who brought our food out.I would have rated the place 'excellent' if the prices were a bit cheaper.

We were staying nearby and popped in for an evening mid-week meal. The views were stunning over the lake, surrounded by mountains. The pub is an older style and could do with a bit of TLC however dont let that put you off because the food was really good. I had garlic mushrooms and the prawn madras, my partner had the prawn ocktail and then a steak. This restaurant accepts Tastecard as well which will save some pennies.I would return, the food was good and the lady behind the bar was pleasant too.

Its a real shame that the drinks here are well over priced considering an establishment in this location needs all the trade it can get.£10.95 for a pint of average cider and a glass of house rose....Yes we did ask the bar staff to check the price. We were gob smacked at the price!I have been visiting this area since a small child and I'm well versed in how trade operates in the area. Offering prices like this will not do you any favours and tourist s are well up on where to get reasonably priced drinks....

Stopped for a bite to eat here on a nice Sunday afternoon. The staff were attentive and helpful, the views were wonderful at the lake side but overall I felt let down. - What was right, the staff were great, polite and were happy to check if we needed something while sat outside.- Location is amazingWhat let it down,- £4 for a warm beer - Taken off the bar as a display beer and before I could say anything in my glass. I know its a little thing but it was unnecessary although I should have complained there and then.- Rustic was turning in to run down and dark, I know its an old building but it was so cold in the toilet that one could see steam - Food was very expensive for what it was, when you added in extra...like chips it became silly for greasy spoon type food. I hate leaving negative feedback for what clearly were nice people doing the best they can but I wouldn't eat here again unless changes were made.

Every time I have been to Wales (4-5 times per year since I found out about my Auntie's caravan), I have been drawn to this hotel. First as a place to enjoy an excellent glass of house red overlooking the stunning lake, then a mandatory dining experience. No matter whether it's a lunchtime bowl of tasty stew, a stunning dinner worthy of a gourmet chef or just a quick coffee after a brisk breakfast walk round the lake, I have always been made to feel most welcome here. It seemed the obvious choice to stay for a long weekend last year (2012) when the caravan was all sewn up for winter. I cannot imagine more helpful hosts than Angela and Brian when my car was written off by a local driving too fast in the rain. They made me feel quite cared for and could not do enough to smooth the horror of police, insurance and hire car agents. I was welcomed and supported like a family member. This is definitely a place I would recommend unreservedly to anyone.

I and my friends prefer to relax and unwind in beautiful and friendly places. This restaurant covers all of that. Then there is the amazing freshly cooked food, carefully selected ingredients; hot, plentiful, beautifully and colourfully presented, and so good it almost stops conversation!Everyone's tastes are catered for, but for those of us who are Vegetarian or Vegan, this is a Paradise on Earth.Unusually, Several Menu options to choose from and all of high qualityWarm, friendly but not intrusive Patrons and Staff , with a wonderful lakeside patio looking at the whole vista of the Tal y Llyn for the many sunny days that come so unexpectedly in this part of Wales. We have certainly returned many times during our Summer Holidays, and also plan a Winter break or two, (just as we did last Christmas Day!) at the Pen y Bont.We have already booked a mixed Vegetarian cum meat-eating party in for the "One Enchanted Evening" celebration of the natural world with a specially researched firework display, a talented Lounge singer and of course the Carvery (including the famous Pine Nut roast option, not to be missed). This is a good place to relax, whether they are hugely busy, as so often in High season, or just for a lovely quiet off-season meal and relax to chat with a friend or two.

If u are thinking Wales, u must see this place. From a short distance from a hotel(10 min by car) You will find a magic escape intro nature, through waterfalls, hidden caves, flora and fauna,King Arthur labyrinth, Hobbit trees, and breath taking mountain views. If you are the one seeking a luxury and meal in 10 minutes to be ready for you do not be fooled. Did ever seen a home made food to be ready in such a short time? People do not have a patience these days, they are like spoiled kids screaming ''feed me now''. I waited for my food to come longer than usual but the quality was delighting. Every morning we were welcomed with fresh veg or watermelon juice and garden salad. My partner is a meaty person enjoyed local beacon and free range eggs. The rooms were very clean with comfy bed, and supply with drinks on arrival. The staff were very polite and helpful. The owners night stories about Celtic legends and Druids only assured me that was a place we will be back shortly. Kasia and Derek

The food was delicious, large portions and you could tell that it was homemade (regardless of other reviews). This was a refreshing find! Having visited several pubs/restaurants in the surrounding area where good customer service didn't seem to be a priority, it was nice to feel welcomed (and not a hassle - as other places have) and it was nice to have a scrumptious homemade meal that was enjoyable to eat! The chips were real (non frozen) and close to the best I have eaten and the ale was great. We were sufficiently impressed to return for a lunch and a supper and in each case it was pub food at its best. I can recommend the stake pie. My husband and I stayed in the church opposite this restaurant and on Sunday July 14th, were pleased that we could just pop across the road to the Pen-Y-Bont for Sunday lunch. We were asked, on arrival, whether we wanted 1,2, or 3 courses, but we didn't know at that point as often when you set out hungry, you find later that your eyes are bigger than your belly!! We said we'd start with one course and decide afterwards. We did have a 2nd course, but as a one course meal had already been put through the till, it took about 5 or 10mins and 2 staff to sort out the 2 course meal deal. I've never heard of this system before.i.e having to decide on how many courses, and pay, when you go in. However, whilst the food was plentiful, it arrived cold and had to be sent back. The whole place looks very tired and lacks lustre. The room where people, who unfortuantely have a dog with them, are banished to, even worse. The smell of the toilets hits you before you even get to them. Very distasteful, particularly as people are expected to eat in the room outside. On this occasion the toilet doors were propped open by chairs adding to the aroma.Adding insult to injury, at the end of our stay, we walked across to get an ice cream and were £6 worse off for 2 Magnums!!!The view outside is beautiful, but don't be taken in by that before you enter the premises.

The Pen-y-Bont hotel has a cozy restaurant that serves "pub food" - simple dishes & simply delicious. We stopped there one cool rainy day in June 2013 and were delighted with our experience. I had the Welsh lamb baguette and my wife had the prawn platter. We decide mine was better, but both were nice. The staff was nicer still - helpful and friendly. My one disappointment: the sugar pie (a specialty) got eaten by "others" (I know who) while I was outside enjoying the incredible views of the lake that abuts Pen-y-Bont hotel. I imagine that the restaurant's outdoor tables and chairs are quite popular during warmer weather and when it's not raining. So, if your travels take you on the B4405, consider dropping in for pub food. You won't be disappointed!

We went her to find an ice-cream sundae for our 5 and 8-year old boys who had been promised a treat for climbing all the way to Llyn cau on Cadair Idris. It started well with the bar staff agreeing to "dress up" their normal 3-scoop ice-cream dessert with some whipped cream and sauce. We sat in the rather attractive beer garden by beautiful Tal-y-llyn which would have been great (apart from the fact it was blowing a gale) and (45 minutes later) retreated to the rather attractive courtyard, which was a little more sheltered. Making enquiries at the bar eventually produced (to my horror) ONE ice cream sundae, when I had ordered two. Another 20 minute wait for another sundae, and an apology re the apple pie that we had also ordered: apparently it could not be found. So we ordered another ice cream......although what eventually turned up WAS the apple pie. I can't say that any of it was worth the wait.

Staff was in experienced and flustered. Our party of 7 decided to order of the menu . This was a big mistake. The food was severely overpriced over 8.95 for a burger that didn't come with any chips or side salad. The chips was an additional £3.25 . When the food eventually arrived we was greated with 7 plates of greasey roadside cafe style food. The burgers could only be discribed as tinned and flavourless.and the chips were frozen bits of chips that was in edible and not fit for human consumption. I addressed my concerns to the chef (a term I use loosely.) About the quality and value for money of are food to be told what do I expect when we ordered greasy food . I was shocked that she was blaming the appalling quality of food on our choices and not the way it was prepared . We were all dreaming of a roast dinner, prefereably lamb, and our hearts sank just a little bit when just the beef was on offer, and the lunch was £10.80 a pop! very hungry, we decided to go for it anyway, and were definately rewarded! Our plates arrived without much of a wait, several slices of beef topped with giant yorkies and two huge roast potatoes on each plate, covered in lovely gravy. Accompaniments arrived in the form of cauliflower cheese, red cabbage with sultanas, mashed potato and mashed swede and carrots and there was plenty to feed 6 very hungry, and admittedly greedy, campers! Had a meal there while visiting the area, had tried to book one of the restaurants in Aberdovey but couldn't get in. Owners were friendly enough and the location is great, inside however was fairly dismal and lacked atmosphere. As a starter I had pate - tasted ok but was very wet and sloppy and came with just 4 tiny triangles of very thin toast. Sirloin steak for the main course, I can honestly say I have never had a steak like it. It hadn't been trimmed, loads of fat on it and it had clearly been cooked in the oven rather than on a griddle. I ordered mine medium, it was grey and dry with no seasoning, and looked like it had been cooked for about a week! It came with chips which were OK (again I believe oven cooked), onions & mushrooms (which were quite nice) and beieve it or not - tinned peas! (surely even frozen wouldn't have been difficult)To me this felt like a place run by people who either lack experience and don't really know what they are doing, or simply don't care any more. Unlikely I will be travelling aound the area again anyway but I would recommend anyone visiting gives it a wide berth.

I visited this restaurant with six of my friends over the May bank holiday. We originally met on a South African tour five years ago and each year meet up in a different part of the UK. This time we chose North Wales and as we had no previous experience of this area, we looked to Tripadvisor to give us ideas of where to have that 'special' meal in a memorable beauty spot.Pen-y-Bont Hotel is certainly in a lovely spot overlooking water but that is where the satisfaction finishes. It was a really cold evening and as soon as we entered the 'restaurant' it was obvious that there was insufficient heating. After initially removing my coat, myself and another of our party replaced them. I noticed that the only other people in the room, were also wearing their coats. We ordered our initial drinks - beer and lager and none of us were happy with them. I actually sent mine back but did not take a replacement, preferring to wait for the red wine with our meal.I didnt order a starter but the rest of the party did and they appeared to be satisfied with them.We requested the menu (I had already been sent an email which said that there would be a 'special' of pan-fried sea bass with king prawns) but was told that this had been taken off the menu at lunchtime. However, I was told that this item was still available and three of our party ordered this dish. The rest of the party either ordered sirloin steak, liver and onions or the 'special' of Welsh lamb chops with port and red currant gravy. The first of the dishes to arrive was the sirloin steak which looked very pale in colour, limp and edged with considerable fat. The next to arrive was the sea bass which again (when I managed to find the very small portion) was pale in colour and mushy in consistency. It appeared to the three of us who had ordered this dish, that it had been frozen and then thawed. The liver and lamb chops also had the same anaemic look and I was told that the gravy, which was supposed to contain port and red currants, tasted like Bisto. The only item worth mentioning was the home-cut chips which indeed were delicious but because the room was so cold, soon turned hard and uninviting. We had pre-ordered our taxi for 10.30p.m. but as the room was so cold and we had been so disappointed with our meal we did not bother to order a dessert and asked for our taxi to arrive earlier than arranged, leaving at approximately 9.15 p.m.The total restaurant bill was £207.80 and I can honestly say that I have never had such an appalling meal at such an outrageous price in all my life. I do not usually write reports on Tripadvisor to complain - only to praise but I felt I needed to prevent anyone else from being so disappointed. I feel the 'independent' reports given on Tripadvisor were not genuine and should not be taken as being a true reflection of this restaurant.
