Good food and a nice garden. Quick service too. Would have been nice to not do all via an app and get some service but was fine.

Well what can I say we where given a warm welcome when we got there we did not book there covid regs where gd every member of staff wearing masks and where nice plus we where able to take are dog in which was gd the food was gd one of the best foods I've had in a pub they even loved the dog which was nice defo going back thank you for making us feel welcome and for the dog friendly pub

I went for my first drink outside with a friend since March last night and the Pen & Wig have got their Covid protocols perfectly in place. A strict and regimented list of rules that keeps their customers and staff safe. You use an app and they deliver to your table. I felt really safe and comfortable! Well done guys!

Solo me he aventurado a ir a pubs algunas veces desde que reabrieron durante Covid - 19. My wife and In have just returned from our 1st pub visit since lockdown. Yes, it's different but the whole set-up was brilliantly organised and managed. Whilst setting up the "track and trace" and ordering from the table via an app was a bit of a pain for us "oldies", we got there in the end and everything operated so well.Congratulations to the management and staff on great service and strict adherence to Welsh Government guidelines on social distancing. It made us feel really comfortable particularly compared to the scenes we saw in "Bumbling Boris'" London last weekend.Well done!

Flat lager, rude staff and a terrible, terrible atmosphere. If you are not a 'regular' you will be sadly overlooked.

Had a evening in Peg & Wig met our friends there after match & the pub was bouncing was a really good atmosphere & bar staff were brilliant also food was great a real nice change from City pubs after a big match

This was close to our accommodation and had a late license.Staff were friendly and a good selection of drinks.Despite a busy night staff served quickly and were attentive.We thought it was a great place to end the day without the real energy of central Cardiff.

This place is right for drinks, and back in Feb a few other friends and I came here for afternoon drinks before the Ireland V England game. Drinks are expensive, but the staff and decor of this place are excellent.

Had a fab night here (Tuesday 8/10/19) for a works gathering, the service was very prompt and friendly with ample staff on hand to serve. We chose a Tuesday for Quiz Night. There was lots to choose from the menu, also cater for vegan and gluten free, the food arrived fast and piping hot. After tasty meals we made 2 teams of 5 and enjoyed a few hours of competition and banter. I would recommend and visit again. Thank you to the Pen & Wig Team for your warm welcome and hospitality.

This a regular place for us to meet friends after work, have leaving meals and our start place for a proper night out. Theres plenty of under cover area which is great for smokers or to still be able to sit outside when we have our usual typical weather.

Just popped in for lunch, food was good and reasonably priced. Staff could not be more helpful and attentive. As a vegetarian there was options for me which was pleasantly surprising. The desserts were fantastic! Thank you!

A lovely welcoming pub within the legal district of Cardiff city center. Has a spacious beer garden in rear of establishment, and a small seating area out front. Food menu is quite unique compared to many other pubs in that it offers a modern spin to traditional pub grub. The prices are very affordable and the quality is excellent. Wide range of real ales and spirits. On street car parking available. Free WiFi. Highly recommended.

I joined some friends at this place for a leaving do. They had a reserved table. My friends went outside for a cigarette, leaving me, as a non smoker, looking after the table. A waiter appeared and without asking took a chair from our table. I pointed out that someone was sitting there, and rather than put the chair back, he replaced it with a chair from someone else’s table- the person at the other table pointed out that the seat was for his friend who was at the bar and the waiter shouted at him. He then came back to my table and shouted “happy now?” At me. I was nothing but polite but was met with nothing but aggression. It seemed like the waiter was interested in a woman who sat at the new table and wanted to suck up to her at the expense of the (9) people sitting at the other tables. I have never encountered such aggression, rudeness and unprofessional behaviour from a waiter before

Vaya timo. Esperamos más de media hora un 12 para un pequeño tipo de McDonald's, procesamos una hamburguesa con papas que parecían anemia y ni siquiera conseguimos un cuchillo y un tenedor o una servilleta. Came across this pub by accident and was so impressed we went twice on the same day - earlier for lunch when our burgers were very good and then later for a few more drinks. Very friendly staff, too!

You are no longer the budget student pub that you once were (£11 for a steak, £12 for belly pork...) so please consider changing your value, bog standard chips.

Had Sunday lunch last week, the starters were incredible and the staff were lovely! When the main came, the gravy was unfortunately thick, the vegetables and potatoes had obviously been frozen and the meat was dry, was very over priced for what we got. Generally love this pub but unsure if would return for Sunday lunch!

Discovered on the off chance this place is a great little find. Staff are ever so friendly, which makes a pleasant change these days! Good choice of real ales and cider, including various Welsh varieties. Food was excellent and everyone in our party rated it excellent, especially the Wagyu beef burger! Would definitely come here again and recommend it to anyone.

We arrived for Sunday lunch and werebt disappointed. I'd emailed before as we had a vegan dining and wanted to make sure they could cater for them. They were very friendly and immediately offered numerous dishes. Very reasonable prices as well, we had 8 clean plates!

A short walk from where we abandoned the kids was a pub we had not visited before. The pub has a great range of ales and big beer garden at the rear. They served food until ten. The food was enjoyed by all as was the choice of beers. I would go again.

It was my grandmothers birthday and sadly my grandfather passed away this year so it was always going to be a tough one. She wanted to go somewhere quiet with no fuss and where she could also take her dog Rosie. We looked online and stumbled across the Pen and Wig as a dog friendly pub, very close to the museum so easily accessible parking, and therefore decided to visit.. and what a visit it was! The lady on the bar was extremely friendly and picked a nice quiet table by the window which is exactly what we asked for. The waiter was also very friendly and promptly brought over a bowl of water on arrival for our dogs Olive and Rosie. We ordered our main meals which were served quickly and to a high standard and were delicious! The fish and chips was huge and definitely worth ordering if you ever visit! Our tables were then cleared promptly and we were offered further drinks.

John and Louis were really good and way above me looks wise. I’m 49 with my partner and thy made us both feel special.

1 hr 15 min to receive main meal when only about 25 people in the pub. They just didn't have enough staff to deal with a low volume and a quiet day. The food was cold as well.

Decent place to go for a quiet pint or two early to mid pm (especially if thinking of eating) but can get rather busy once offices start to shut up shop. Location is good; central if slightly hidden away.

Simply outrageous prices for average food and beer. Another Stonegate scam. Avoid avoid avoid. They raise their prices almost on a weekly basis.

Visiting Cardiff for the weekend and popped into The Pen and Wig, hidden away with a lovely welcome and range of beers. Soaked up the sun and our meals of calamari and pulled beef croquettes hit the mark. Looking forward to coming back.

Nice traditional pub, great selection of beers. The food is average in both taste and price. Excellent beer garden.

Visited here with some friends from New Zealand. Haven't actually been here before. Really impressed with the selection of beers. A little bit pricey but it was better than just going to your average spoons!

The Pen and Wig is tucked away in a side street near the museum and is a great hidden away place to know about. Extremely popular with university staff and students. They appear to have a great menu though I haven't yet treated myself to a meal. Instead, it's my favourite place to go for an after work drink. Prices are reasonable with a good selection of drinks and the pub itself is really cosy. Popular in the summer for its beer garden but just as equally a good cosy winter pub. Great atmosphere and great place to meet colleagues after work. Can get busy though and sometimes takes a while to get served - but that's down to its popularity.

Don’t bother going after 7pm on a Friday or Saturday - place is rammed with students and staff are in no rush to serve! Very disappointing.

As a keen ale drinker this little pub is one of my favourites when visiting the city centre from Penarth. They always have a vast array of ale ready to serve, you really can’t fault it. The pub itself is cosy and well maintained and the beer garden is just impeccable, though I do hope those building works behind them have gone by the summer!!!!

The food here is pretty good 'pub' food for the price. Had the 2 meals for £12 risotto which was nice but the only veggie option.

Usually the service is good but totally not so... I had to wait over 40 mins for my food and considering I was on my lunch break that’s a long time.. I was late getting back to work as well!

A big group of us came to the pen and wig for food and for drinks. Wasn’t a great selection of ale, but other than that drink selection was fine. Our food came out very quickly and was very tasty! I had a burger and my husband had a pie, both tasted great! We then went outside to smoke and were delighted by all the outdoor seating and the outdoor heating was great. Will definitely come back

This traditional pub is located not far from Cardiff museum. It has a garden to the rear and the atmosphere of a country pub. They have an impressive range of hand pulled beers and ciders. The staff were very friendly we enjoyed our visit.

We booked a table a couple of months ago for our office Xmas celebration. We arrived early and were surprised how quite it was. We ordered a drink and awaited our pre orders to start arriving. Unfortunately one of the four starters arrived very late (the other three had all finished) the food was well presented and very tasty. The main course was also slow in all arriving which again meant that some of the group had nearly finished when the last main arrived. Once again however the food was well presented and tasty. My rump med rare steak was cooked just right.

The Pen and Wig has a lovely atmosphere and is always my go to when in Cardiff! They offer a great selection of ale and their food is always so good. Sometimes there isn't enough staff on and you have to wait at the bar for a while before getting served. Also worth a mention is the fantastic and spacious beer garden, they offer you blankets so you can still enjoy it in the winter months!

Lush dinner today, beef beautifully cooked along with parsnips, broccoli, peas, carrots and roasties with 2 Yorkshire puddings good portion & great value one small thing carrots were not cooked but once soaked in the lovely gravy they were edible. We were asked if we wanted extra roasties & yorkie’s which were much appreciated & quickly wolfed down.

We came here as a couple with our parents for Sunday lunch and chose the Roast Beef, Pork and Nut Roast options. The food was tasty and we were really impressed with the meals, all cooked to perfection. The pub is a hidden gem of Cardiff and has a lovely warm atmosphere. Staff were very helpful and friendly too. Thanks very much guys and we'll definitely return .

I visited yesterday lunchtime for the first time recommended by the friend I came with. Oh boy, I'm glad she did! The atmosphere was very chilled, and the decor around the pub was lovely. We decided on what to eat and went to the bar to order and we were greeted by a very friendly and polite bartender, didn't catch his name but he was tall and broad with dark hair. He served us efficiently and with a great deal of care (also asked us for ID which is great cause that hasn't happened to me in a while!). He was able to answer all my questions about the food and certain ciders and even took the time to explain to me lots of details about the speciality ciders. Our food came out in about 20 minutes and tasted amazing! Don't know how they cook their food there but it all tasted fresh! I had the hunters chicken. After food we stayed for another drink. Overall I felt very relaxed and enjoyed my time visiting. I will definitely be back!

The atmosphere here is usually exciting with lots of business people calling in for lunch or drinks.

I came here for a Sunday roast with my boyfriend. The pub is very hidden away and close by, I'd been for food before and it was nice, so I wanted to take him there.

Get pub with such a variety of real ales and great good. Lovely atmosphere and a great place out the back which is a good place to have a beer early evening

Visited this Gem of a pub today for lunch with some visitors from Canada. There was a very good choice of ales on offer and our guests from Canada were given the chance to sample them before picking which was a nice touch. There were 7 of us in total and we had some meals from the Sunday menu and were allowed to order some food from the regular menu. We had a variety of dishes, Roast Beef Lunch, Scampi, Club Sandwich, Chicken and Bacon Salad, Calamari, cheese plowman's , all were very good. The staff were very helpful and the atmosphere was very good. All in all we had a very enjoyable time here and fully intend to visit again.

My second visit with a group of friends from Haverfordwest tothis lovely pub which is a short walk from the City centre. The staff were very friendly and courteous taking time to explain the wide variety of beer on offer and allowing us to have a sampler before deciding.The Sunday Lunch menu had a good choice and something for everyone - I had the lamb shank which was first class and recommended. Everyone in the group enjoyed both their food and beers and I am looking forward to my next visit.John Daniels

Visited this pub last night with my boyfriend, and we had a great evening. It was busy but there were still plenty of places to sit and there was a hubbub of noise but it was still easy to talk and chat, in fact it just added to the atmosphere.My boyfriend likes to try new and different beers and Rob was really friendly and helpful, talking through the guest ales and letting him try different ones. We were really impressed and thought he was fantastic, so a very big thanks should go out to Rob. I was very impressed with the gin selection as a bit of a fan, and I was pleasantly surprised at how reasonably priced it all was. A hidden gem and definitely worth a visit..next time we'll try the food!

we didn't know what to expect as we had been given an eating experience voucher as a xmas pressie. This is a very busy pub/restaurant with not a lot of choice but staff were friendly and helpful

Terrible customer service. Remarkably rude in fact. They messed up an order then acted as if we were trying to rob them of a portion of chips. Will never go back here.

Staff were SO rude and snotty. Will safely never visit again. Unwilling to help and service was disgusting.

Visited the Pen & Wig last night as we had been given a Gastro Pub experience voucher. We were greeted on arrival and made to feel special. The experience was explained cleary to us by the manager, he was welcoming, helpful and attentive. In a word Perfect, thank you. We were extremely impressed with the food, the quality of the combo sharing platter was fantastic value for money and the long bone steak and beef and ale pie was fabulous. Great atmosphere and service. Would highley recommend.

We had a lovely late lunch, enough choice for 6 of us with reasonable prices. The service was friendly and the food good, there is a good choice of beers/ciders too. It was a sunny day so it was nice to be able to sit outside in the beer garden.

Called into this pub while dropping off our granddaughter in town for a drink and found it had a good range of beers and a good menu. It is in a good spot near the city centre. The staff are very friendly and they also have a beer garden out the back. Ideal for having a drink before going into town.

Went here for our Easter lunch.Our waiter, Sion, knew all about the food and the bev and was super friendly to top it all.I chose the beef and double Gloucester pie with a side of sweet potato fries.It sounds like a very fatty and heavy meal but was actually very nicely done so that it was relatively light.The pie was a short-crust pastry (i prefer puff) but was delicious, but I unfortunately didn't get the double Gloucester bit...The dish came with nicely baked carrots, freshly steamed broccoli and a yummy gravy.Of course the sweet potato fries were delicious and not even that fatty.I tried my partner's nut roast which was an aromatic dream of vegetarian loveliness.The cookie dough explosion was a nice finish to this meal.

Whilst visiting our daughter in Cardiff, we wanted to find a place for a meal. We struggled to find anywhere due to having our 4 legged friend with us Stanley. We managed to book The Pen & Wig over the phone. When we turned up we asked if we could move from our reserved table to another table due to some extra space for Stanley, not a problem what so ever. As soon as we sat down, a new clean filled water bowl was brought out to Stanley. As well as a mothers day treat to my wife. Sean and his time were relaxed and friendly and very welcoming. The food was spot on. I have ate a lot of pies in my life but the double Gloucester steak pie, has got to be in the top 3 I've eating! The sunday roasts my wife and daughter had were excellent. The beef was thickly sliced, non of that wafer thin beef you can get. Everything about our experience at the Pen was a raging result. Will certainly be returning on our next visit.

The food here is very good and they have a good range of local ales on offer. For the summer months there is also a nice sized beer garden. Well worth a visit if you fancy a pub lunch!

I booked a table here a month ago for 11 people to celebrate my sons 2nd birthday and even over the phone the staff couldnt help enough and today was no exception. From the minute we walked in the staff were extremely welcoming; especially Sion who went out of his way to make my son's birthday so special and could not do enough for us. The drinks arrived promptly and the food was beautiful; everyone enjoyed and we will definitley be coming back when we are in Cardiff next time. Thank you so much Sion and everyone at the Pen and Wig for making our son's birthday/mothers day one to remember!!!

We were down in Cardiff for mother's day and popped in for a drink. We received a warm welcome from friendly staff who also gave us mother's day treats even though we were not eating. Food looked good so will definitely do back and visit.

Visited twice over the weekend to watch the Wales/France rugby Farce, then for Sunday Lunch.Saturday, settled in for a few drinks at a table with a reasonable view of the telly. The tables had been noted as reserved for 8:30 pm when it was only early afternoon, it was a bit strange and did put some people off until we and some others flagged-up the timings.As we were going for a meal later on, we opted for the fish "finger" sandwich with a side of chips as a sharer. The focaccia with a small cod inside was very nice - the side of chips however was rather measly in quantity, especially when subsequent meals at other tables came out much larger. Sunday, decided to go for lunch after visiting the Museum art expo. Opted for beef and a turkey so we could each have a try of the meats. Both meals were very nice, excellent gravy to add, so wasn't swamped. Just a little short of roasted spuds - which was a result of them running out - roast dinners ceased shortly after we ordered.Both days enjoyed the Tenby Harbwr M V Enterprise Pale Ale (being our local) which was very well presented.

I've booked a table for a group of us for the last Autumn internationals and the 2 recent 6 Nations games. On each occasion our table has been ready for us and the food has come promptly despite the fact that they were extremely busy.Even better was the choice of beers and the way in which everyone is able to get served quickly due to the efficiency and number of the bar staff.Despite the pressure they must be under on match days, all the staff are really pleasant and ready to help.Looking forward to my next visit.

Excellent Sunday roast for a tired traveler, but be sure to get here early. We arrived just before 5 p.m., and they only had five roasts left. Everything was really good, though.

I have been meeting friends here for a pre rugby match beer and a meal for some years now. Visited again last Friday evening and had a few pints in the beer garden out back. Was surprised to see that despite a packed pub they still offered a full , normal , menu. Well done. And no price hikes for match day either. Very impressive range of ales ( I'd guess one of the best in Cardiff ) and I should also take time out to compliment the serving staff who dealt with a very busy evening with charm and good humour. I had the bacon and cheeseburger which , at less than a tenner was outstanding value for the quality. My friends all thought the same. Fantastic.

I have to admit I've always liked this pub ever since it opened. However haven't been in a very long time so called in yesterday. Fantastic selection of beers etc had a pint of Tenby Harbour Amber ale which was very acceptable. weather was foul but on a good day this place wouldbe a good find. Nice touch with the blankets for outside.Great photos of old Cardiff on the walls. Food looked very good.
