Now called the Charcoa Carvery since its refurb recently and I was impressed with the new decor which was luxurious and classy. The staff were pleasant and eager to assist and for all it was Sunday lunchtime there was no queu to get served and plenty of choice re seating arrangements for all we had not booked. I chose the turkey which was perfect and my family all had beef which they enjoyed. There was a good selection of vegetables (even salad if we had wanted it) but I did find it difficult to access the veges as there is nowhere to put your plate down and you need one hand to open the lid and another to serve the veges. Also the containers at the back of the vegetable servery were very inaccessible - this must have been designed by a very tall person with no regard for shorter customers and anyone with a disability or only able to use one hand would have been at a severe disadvantage. Also we never discovered the sauces until we returned to select our dessert as the sauces are set aside from the actual carvery and vegetable area. In the past you paid at the end and it was all the same price. Now you buy a ticket at the beginning but the meals are more expensive than the carvery selection so how do you know what you actually want until you are at the servery and by then its too late - you have either paid for carvery or paid for a meal so that is a strange set up I found. BUT getting back to the food and that was good, plentiful and hot. It is described as the 'ultimate carvery' and I think that is rather optimistic - its tasty and the ambience is lovely but a few practical tweaks in my opinion are needed. at the vegetable servery and make customers aware that the sauces are available. I enjoyed my trio of mini desserts and the assistant brought the hot drinks to the table when she had made them. A pleasant afternoon while the piano man played in the background.

We have been to the carvery here many times over the years. Unfortunately it's gone majorly down hill. I would now put it below the quality of a Toby carvery, something which costs significantly less and doesn't position itself as upmarket. Meat - ok but not the full offering, given it's a Sunday that's a failure. Mash - I don't know how you can do such a bad job. It was somehow grainy, not even close to smooth. It honestly gave me the impression of being rehydrated. Stuffing - super doughy, like it had too much flour in it. It was like a thick cold porridge that tasted vaguely of sage. Roast potatoes - must have been old or something. They were very hard on the outside and quite tough when you bit into them. Cheesy cauliflower - very little source, very little care taken when chopping them resulting in huge pieces. Not a deal breaker just an example of the lack of care. Gravy - I was scraping the bottom to get any. I'm assuming at some point it's refilled but it wouldn't get to that point in a Toby carvery, it shows a lack of interest in standards. Lastly, when ordering at the bar we had to interrupt about 4-5 members of staff chatting just to get served. It would have been great if some of those members of staff were spending their time improving the standards instead of doing nothing. As a customer who has visited throughout his entire life I am sad to say I will likely never return to this carvery. Note we drove 40 minutes to get there, going past many alternatives because of our fond memories. Oh one last thing, the price on the board is out of date. Meaning they charge you more at the till. I actually think that might be against the law.

I have to agree with many others here that the experience was poor. Came for the carvery with a large, pre-arranged, group but only a choice of beef or turkey. No one had the turkey but those ordering beef were given a few pieces cut wafer thin, it was disappointing. The Yorkshire pudding was dry and not worth the space it took up on the plate and even lashings of gravy did not help. I gave a second star because the Cauliflower Chees was at least cooked properly. I'll not be coming back.

Expected the best but got the worst carvery ever Only two choises of meat when there was supposed to be four, the cauliflower cheese was raw it was not cooked whatsoever and swimming in liquid definitely not a cheese sauce The Yorkshire puddings were inedible and tough and overcooked the gravy was runny. The deserts looked okay. I chose apple crumble and custard but it was clay cold. The drinks were expensive l was charged £10 for a glass of wine I don’t get out much and was looking forward to a nice treat with friends Won’t be going back there again

Name has changed to Charcoa we had the Carvery. The menu advertises 4 meats but only 2 were available which was disappointing. Mash potatoes was burnt and stuck to the serving dish. The veg was alright. The desserts are not only a rip off but the selection was dire. One or two members of staff certainly need a course in politeness. It will be a long time before I return to this establishment.

Disappointing carvery, nothing like of old, miserable Yorkshire pud. Tough if you don't like watery beef gravy, nothing else. Cold meal sent back to be reheated. They couldn't care less. Shame! Won't be back.

I find it difficult to express how truly awful the experience was. There was a very small piece of beef and possibly pork left at 12.30 when we were supposed to be eating. They had some Yorkshire puddings and some mash. I ended up with three minute slices of beef ,cold on a hot plate and served myself some salad. There was one lad serving. I think there was moussaka on show, dreadfully overcooked ,ditto two lamb chops and something else unrecognisable. Yes there were waiters clearing up but old people with shaking hands carrying plates dripping with gravy. It was so yuk. People paying good money for this and they say there is a cost of living crisis. Oh and if you wanted a sandwich or soup there was a 45 minute wait.

Had not been here for a while and was persuaded to go again. On arrival it all looked the same so went to the bar for drinks - very expensive and limited beer choice as no real ale. On to lunch and the carvery had a vey uninviting display of meat and other dishes. Chose beef but no roasties and no crackling for pork eaters. Vegetable choice limited and just the cheaper vegetables used and all this for £13.95. The beef was overcooked and tough and at least our dogs ate it as there was plenty left from our table. Overall tired and dated surroundings, poor quality food and not value at all - avoid as there are lots of good places for Sunday lunch in Durham

We stayed in the hotel for 14 nights and though we like to eat in different places we ate in Pembertons 4 times, once I had a roast dinner and 3 times lighter meals - soup/sandwich. The trick with the carvery is to look at the meat before you order. Sometimes it has been sitting there for a while and is best avoided but the roast I had was very good - nice meat, not dry or tough and super quality vegetables with a lovely Yorkie. The hot meat sandwiches / stotties were very nice (again have a look at the meat first) as were the cold sandwiches. The homemade soup was very good. The quality of the coffee was variable as some of the staff haven't been trained to make a cappuccino for instance and I had to send one back. The staff are all very helpful. Sometimes it gets a little noisy with large groups of male golfers which can be off putting.

Being going to the ramside carvery off and on for the past 30 years, and is usually good, but has never really been the same since the wonderful Belgique Chef retired many years ago. Took my family for Sunday lunch, and can only describe the food and service as shocking! My wife and I had the roast beef which was as tough as shoe leather and totally in edable. There were no carrots or roast potatoes left so had to make do with what was left. My daughters pork was full of fat and undercooked, and my sons turkey was dry and overcooked. Complained to staff (all very young and inexperienced with no customer care skills). She said she would contact the manager. She then summoned back to the till after a long wait to arrange a refund by the manager, who made no eye contact are offered an apology!...Needless to say we won't be back until there's an improvement.

The meat was not of great quality. The turkey looked and carved as though it was boiled in a bag . it was sat on a dish of water. the salmon didn't look very tasty either. The room is huge and very dark. It’s all self service no table service even if you aren’t having the carvery. We ordered sandwiches plus a portion of chips, sandwiches arrived but we had to ask for the chips. My beef and horseradish sandwich was in parts very chewy and the beef hadn’t been trimmer properly The whole thing smacked of school dinners or canteen dining

Diabolical Having dined at Ramside for many years it will be a long time before we return…we dined there a couple of months ago and thought maybe they were having a one off bad day.. no it was worse this time. The carvery was diabolical, we arrived at 6pm..there was one dried up yorkshire pudding, a dried up tiny end of Turkey, a half raw piece of beef and some dried up offerings in casserole dishes…looked like they had been sat under the heat lamps for hours..we had to wait for the chef to come to serve us even though the place was two thirds empty..I asked if he was bringing any more meat, Yorkshire puddings etc. he said yes..so we ordered drinks and took a seat..we waited and waited..there was no sign of any food coming out, after trying to find a member of staff I eventually spoke to a waitress and asked why there was no food available at 6pm on a Saturday evening..her reply was there was plenty in the kitchen they just don’t put it out..so we waited then eventually went back to the carvery..waited another 5 minutes to be acknowledged by the chef..I asked when the meat etc. would be ready as he said he was bringing it out..he very rudely replied “oh no I didn’t… and it’s going to be another 20 minutes” by this time it was nearly 6.50pm..I asked if I could speak with a manager..after waiting another 15 minutes and excuses to why he wasn’t available we left..I left my name and number for a call back and I’m still waiting. We went to an alternate establishment at Metal Bridge..we had a lovely meal..plenty of staff, plenty of fresh food..served quickly. So if you go out for dinner on a Saturday evening give the carvery at Ramside a miss..unless you don’t want to eat till over an hour after arriving or longer..staff running round like headless chickens..no experienced staff to be seen…rude chef. What should have been a relaxing evening turned out to be anything but.

I would tell my friends to avoid this at all costs. The carved meat was cool to cold, the veg consisted of sliced white cabbage (ready for coleslaw?) sloppy mashed swede and potatoes, the roast potatoes were almost inedible, there was no green veg - not even peas - and the gravy was like brown water. At least the carrots were edible. The only saving grace was the coffee (Illy) which couldn't be spoiled. Never again, and an enormous waste of money.

Tried this two nights running, never again, burnt grossly overcooked meat, beef could be used as shoe leather, and the other joint which Chef said was Pork (was actually gammon!!), but completely burnt and dried. Roast potatoes, left out completely tasteless, and dried out rock hard. Stuffing with no taste at all, just a mush. Yorkshire pud cremated. Choice of veg, mash like prison slop, cabbage completely white, again no taste. Carrots that actually tasted like carrot but boiled to death. Gravy like brown water. I thought breakfast might be better, but same again all burnt and dried sausage and bacon that looked like cooked in a incinerator. Mushroom that were raw etc etc. if you like toast, top tip give 20 mins notice in toaster, would have been quicker with a box of matches! Selection of fruits is good 👍🏻 Complained at both Carvery and at Breakfast, but was met with a shrug, and comments like “Oh Ok” On check out was hilarious, I was asked everything Ok?, when I mentioned the food in Carvery, the receptionist never even looked up but just said “enjoy your day” almost like a AI Robot 😂

Haven't been for a while now but wife wanted to give it another go, attended around 5pm and the guy at counter (wouldn't call him the chef) put a good amount of meat on the plates along with a large Yorkshire pudding brought out fresh, (good timing) then on to the veg, shredded cabbage (warm but dry) cauliflower cheese, (sauce was insipid and not much there, cauliflower was rock hard and almost raw) carrots and peas, (barley warm and again, carrots were literally rock hard and raw), mashed potato and turnip didn't look appealing so didn't get any, gravy however was boiling hot, thick and tasty. This reminded me of why we hadn't been for a while as not much had improved and probably won't until the cooks actually boil the veg for a while instead of just threatening them with hot water.Like another reviewer on here, I feel Ramside could (and did once) do a lot better, feels like they are now living on the reputation of the past

I have eaten here many times and commented on the consistent high standards. Separate pudding counter with good selection, including hot puddings and coffees. Good spacious seating area, although it was quiet at this time I can imagine a good atmosphere when more tables are full, as there is a bar area in the restaurant and a piano for live entertainment. They were just setting up as we were leaving. Extremely good value, and nice to have that offering in an upmarket hotel.

A fabulous slice of Beef and another of Pork, badly let down by lukewarm and over cooked vegetables. Desert was great.

Have never been here before and came with friends for the early evening special. I was very impressed as I thought it was good value for money. I had the ham and turkey which both meats were lovely. Not a huge variation in veg and no roast potato, which I would expect on a carvery, however there was plenty on my plate and the yorkshire pudding was huge. Tasty gravy too. I was spoilt for choice with dessert, and went for the marshmallow with blueberries. It was fab and I was given plenty cream with it too. Staff were pleasant and attentive, so all in all I thought it very good and will be back.

Came here with my friend. First, the waitress was really rude to us the moment we walked in. Hadn't booked, wanted a table, she was clearly very irritated. Great start! My friend ordered a glass of wine. The choices according to the barman, "Italy, Argentina, New Zealand." Unbelievable lack of training / knowledge. My cocktail was served with ice cubes in it because the girl couldn't use the mixer. Said, "Oops sorry" as the ice cubes came flying out of the cocktail shaker. The carvery buffet area looked unclean and disorganised and the man serving was miserable. The fish and chips were awful - swimming in oil, loads of batter and little fish. The place smelled so strongly of cooking and oil that I couldn't wait to have a shower and put my clothes in the washing machine. Plus, the doors at the entrance and carpets are dirty. Couldn't wait to get out and will not be back.

We used the carvery which offered a good choice. The food was good at a reasonable price with early evening deals.

Ramside is brilliant in most respects (see my review) but the carvery is a huge disappointment. Think ‘motorway service station’ and you’re not far off the mark.

There are some restaurants which remind you how far the UK catering trade has come since the dark days of the 60s and 70s. This carvery is one of them as one enters the brown and slightly sticky world of the transport cafe circa 1970. A disused gambling machine in the lobby sets the tone for the whole depressing experience. The table we sat at, and others nearby, were old, chipped and dirty and the menus on the table were a microbiologists dream. Best handled with surgical gloves. The couch-style seating has had years of culinary adventures and wears its stains with pride. The carpet was strewn with food detritus, presumably from lunch time or previous years.

Well what can I say, our first visit to Ramside for a meal and I always thought this to be a good high class establishment, wow how wrong can you be, on entering building the door glass hadn’t been cleaned for weeks, the entrance dirty, going onto the suites my god, yes there had been a wedding on previous so allowances made for that but the decor is dirty dusty, I wrote a in the dust on one table. White stains on wood tables, torn wallpaper dirty carpets. The pemberton suite is where the carvery is served, the tables were grubby sticky and my god the carpet needed a dyson or 6, the serving area is grubby with a strange food object under the oven on the floor, looked like a breakfast sausage, oven doors all marked and the vegetable serving area messy and lids broken, saying that the dinner was hot and quite tasty, coffee overpriced st £3.50 and not served with a biscuit!!!!! We decided to have a dessert, big error , served in a very small cereal bowl with cake sitting on top of sides and the pouring cream sitting below, looked as appertising as their cabbage!!!!!! Not cheap at £4.50. Will NOT return and glad we were not staying overnight like our couple we were with, they had rejected their first £130 room. Like the saying goes don’t judge a book by cover well this one was a bad disappointing read

This was our second visit for lunch in a matter of weeks. On both Occasions we had our 4 year old grandchild with us. There is absolutely no provision for children’s portions and both times we had to get a huge pizza for the 4 year old. The first occasion we paid £2 less for the pizza than we did today! Today my husband was told if he had the carvery then the child’s meal would be free so he ordered it ( he was going to have something else) after ordering a member of staff came and said that the children’s meal was not free, that offer didn’t start till 3pm so we had to pay £9+ for the pizza which is far too big for a child.

Chose this venue because of it's lovely setting. You pay extra of course but if the service and food is good then fine. However today the length of the queue was long and never cleared all the time we were there. The cook cutting the meat was very slow and served the smallest amount of meat ever known, and never smiled once.Smile..speak.. serve that's the way to do it.The lids for the veg were broken.I'm afraid you need to up your game!!!!

We often go to this Carvery at Ramside Hall and it is always brilliant. Lovely roasts, salmon, cottage pie, curries and more. It's a 2 course with a good choice of desserts.

First impressions, rather dated and worn out furniture. We both had the carvery which was lovely. The service could be a lot better, no staff on the counter for carvery, no table service for drinks, had to wait for custard ice cream machine not working.

the carvery was warm and the food had been there for a while and was tasteless. Next time we ate from the menu and had fish and scampi which was delicious and hot. No table service for drinks so best to get drinks first before getting your meal

The carvery offered a good choice of meats and alternative dishes, as well as a reasonable selection of vegetables. All were fresh, hot and nicely cooked. Unfortunately, no salmon was available on the day we visited. However, a bonus was an excellent selection of salads for those who were watching their weight after the festive season! The staff were friendly and helpful. Our group included young children and the informal atmosphere was ideal. Not particularly cheap but reasonable value for money and less costly if you visit later in the afternoon.

While staying at Ramside Hall we decided to try Pemberton's carvery....and we weren't disappointed. The quality of the food was very good and it was also very reasonably priced. Between 3-5pm there is a two course offer for less than ten pounds, fantastic value !!! Would definitely recommend.

Had Sunday lunch here today and it was amazing. The beef was the best we have probably had on a carvery. The Yorkshire's were delicious as was all veg and gravy was extra special. We could not fault this lunch. Well done Ramside and staff were great !!

Myself and ex-colleagues have have had lunch annually for the last 3 years. I had hoped over the last 3 yeasr, the management team would have recognised the issues surrounding the process of navigating the carvery offering - for example, it's a neat trick to balance your plate of food and pay for your meal at the till.... not a good experience. Nevertheless, decided to give it another go .... the chef was dour and personality-free, although, to be fair the pork was absolutely delicious - probably, the best-cooked meat I've had in all my years of eating in Carveries!! I shouldn't have raised my hopes as the vegetable offerings were not as good as they could have been - shrivelled cabbage, garden peas and fresh carrots served together??, no roast potatoes .. and of course the balancing act at the till to top off a poor Customer experience. The Carvery, at £11.95, is not particularly good value for money which was reflected in the number of Customers in the restaurant .

Ordered two 'Croque Monsieur' and what arrived was two ham and cheese toasties lathered in poor quality English mustard? Why English Mustard? With stale crisps and wilted lettuce. Very poor and given the price quite surprising, especially given that there are numerous much nicer cafés in the city. Staff rather surly as well.

We had fish bites (generous portion of large fish "chunks"), large sausage, chips, gravy, peas and scraps! It was a lovely treat to have and take onto the beach nearby to eat. Really friendly chap who served me.

Warm welcome and lovely food. My wife loved the naanza and my curry was spiced perfectly to my request. Would love to visit again but it's our last day in the area.
