My friend attended this cafe on the 4th of June in the Lanes in Brighton, she was served by a vile woman who made it clear she was opposed to serving black women. She was rude from the get go, even though my friend was perfectly polite and only wanted a vegan cake. When she was served she slammed the cake on the table with complete disregard of customer service, and apologised to the white woman who was being served next in the line, implying that my friend had done something wrong, when all she had done was attempt to study in a cafe as a person of colour. This behaviour should be regarded as unacceptable and hope the staff will find a way to correct this issue.

This new branch of Pelicano (the other is in Sydney Street in the north laine) is in the location previously occupied by the much-missed Taylor Street Baristas. Taylor Street was a tough act to follow, but Pelicano is doing pretty well. The coffee is very good, as is the hot chocolate, and to accompany your drink they do some seriously nice cakes, which come in large slices, great for sharing. The interior is fairly similar to back in the Taylor Street days, basically standard Brighton coffee shop, but with fewer tables than before - it's less crowded than the Sydney Street shop, which is nice. A welcome addition to the growing collection of good cafés on Queens Road. One bit of advice for the staff - while I don't know the details of their predecessor's demise, it was one of those places that always had the single person with the laptop occupying the four-seat table for hours on end with one coffee. Discouraging this kind of behaviour will be good for business, and this place deserves to do well.

Absolutely LOVE Redroaster. I booked the venue to celebrate my birthday and it was undoubtedly the right choice. The team - particularly Flora and Amba - were so accommodating. Any question or idea I had the response was "of course, no problem!" We served canape-style food which went down a treat (shout out to the egg dish!) and the team were just a delight to be around, taking great care of my guests. I would massively recommend Redroaster in a heartbeat. Oh, and if you're simply looking for a good coffee shop to visit during the day, it's great - amazing coffee, pastries, glorious venue, and - like i said - great team.
