I thought hard about this bad review as we have had some good lunches here but our latest visit was a rip off. We paid for our drinks at the bar and then asked for a menu. We were given a full menu and looked at the section labelled Lunch as it was lunchtime! We placed our order at the bar as we couldn’t see another staff member. Our food order was £12.50 each on the lunch menu. We are and food was ok. My husband paid and we left. He then mentioned it cost over £30. I assumed they’d made an error by adding on our already paid for drinks. We returned and apparently because we hadn’t stressed we ordered from the lunch menu they had charged us an extra £5 per meal even though it was exactly the same as the £12.50 meal. We ordered at lunchtime!! Worse still they added on a tip of £3.50 without asking! A total of £38.50 for a £25 meal. Sadly won’t return and will not recommend.

I got together with my family here on the weekend. Large group of 10 and we all had a wonderful experience. The Sunday lunch was superb (my beef was out of this world!) and the portions generous and reasonably priced. The staff, both front of house and the head chef, were friendly and helpful and ensured we had a good time. We had a couple of young kids with us but never felt in the way or that they were a bother (it helps that the place is huge!). There’s a pleasant garden in the back with trees for climbing and a little stream that kept my son’s attention between courses. Dogs welcome. Plenty of parking right outside. Ramp to the door. Just a really nice spot for lunch.

Sorry to say but we did not have a great experience, staff seemed friendly but could not provide an average customer service. We went for lunch and were very pleasantly surprised at the varied menu. The food was really good although portions were a little small for the price (I had a burger). Service was somewhat slow at times (we had to search for them to order dessert) but that's often the way with lower wage, younger staff and they were friendly and thoughtful just young I think. The only thing that would stop me coming back is the portion size not reflecting the price as I was hungry afterwards... I think pubs forget vegan food usually has lower calories so you kind of need a few extra chips or something to reflect that. Some vegan mayo wouldn't go amiss either. Compliments to the chef though!

Had a meal here tonight. Despite quiet restaurant service was extremely slow, only one person on waiting tables and bar, so long delays between courses, sometimes thought food for the restaurant was forgotten while tending bar, the lamb I had was tough and vegetables cold. Chicken schnitzels were overcooked, the desserts when eventually arrived were better. Would suggest one person not enough to cope.

I've been here twice with a friend in the last couple months, both with lasting impressions. Strap yourself in! The first time, we ordered 'lunch size' meals. When the food arrived it became apparent 'lunch size' was Pelican-hieroglyphic for 'child's portion'. The fish and chips my friend ordered resembled a sad little battered sausage with an equally depraved entourage of chips, and the steak sandwich I ordered, rather graciously, saved me from a second slice of bread (my primitive brain always assumed serving a single slice of bread amounted to 'steak on toast' - alas, I am not a man of culture). Today, we returned - fuelled by our ill-informed desire to support local business. With rumbling tummies we opted for the big-boy portions. To our delight, these were bigger than the 'lunch size' portions of yestermonth, but to our dismay, not by much. My friend ordered fish and chips again, eager to right the wrongs of the past - but the fish was more batter than it was actually fish, the chips were unsuccessful in their efforts to recruit many more members to their entourage and the thimble of tartar sauce was predominantly occupied by several whole capers that looked rather pleased with themselves - but to be fair, my friend was able to extract two full teaspoons of mushy peas with a syringe from the cute little ramekin it was served in. I had ordered the Korean chicken burger, that previously teased me on the menu. When it arrived, the chips were served in a trendy pot to remind me just how fashionable the whole affair was - but neglected their duty to satiate my appetite once again. The minimalist presentation also caught my eye, it's just so boorish for a perfectly bare porcelain plate to be smeared by an attractive garnish. The burger itself seemed somewhat palatable, but upon closer inspection with the aid of a microscope, I was able to identify a wafer thin slice of chicken in the mix - I can only thank the senior Pelican management for making the executive decision to spare me the injustice of paying £16 for a juicy and succulent steak I may accidentally sink my teeth into. The Pelican is pricing itself as a Bistro Pub, which ensures mind blowing-flavour in exchange for mind-blowing prices. And yet, I must commend their commercial success in delivering only half of this equation - modern solutions for modern problems I say! My friend and I usually get a rewarding high from burning our money (though that's probably because the notes are made from fancy wash-proof plastic now). However, when the Pelican offered us the same opportunity in exchange for war-time rations we jumped at the chance. If you're looking to trim some belly fat but still entertain the facade that the cost of living hasn't hurt your bank balance, they've got your back! But on reflection, we're still pretty hungry. It must be Putin's fault - I'm sure the Pelican has devoted most of its resources in supporting Ukraine. I generously donated an extra star because although the food left me wanting, it did not leave me hanging over the toilet. Looking forward, the holy Mecca of KFC beckons once more - please forgive our lack of faith, Imam Sanders.

Awful service and food! We were waiting for 40 minutes for our order to be taken, wouldn't have minded but it wasn't that busy as we had an early table. Starters took 20 minutes to come and then a further 40 minutes for mains. No mention of a wait when ordering. The food wasn't that nice. Myself and one other person had chicken strips for starter, we were ill for a few days afterwards. Mentioned we needed a highchair when the table was booked, that wasn't there when we arrived. Asked the Waitress if she could bring a hair chair, she didn't bother so we got our own in the end. Not a big deal but just adds to the poor customer service. People serving us were really uninterested, everything was just so slow including taking drinks orders. We have been to The Pelican a few times before and never had any issues. We booked on Saturday afternoon for the evening and they had space. Lovely friendly staff, who were really welcoming. We had a bottle of wine between us and asked about the ‘4 sharers for £24’ deal, which only had one customisable vegan option, and asked to add the soup starter as a fourth (it was cheaper) and was outright told no. We ordered four starters/sharers and two meals. When brought out, one of the starters had been forgotten, when enquired about, we were told it would be a few minutes. My vegan starters the hounds and bread and soup were fantastic. His chicken wings were a bit dry and the belly pork tasted nice but was undercooked and not crispy. I had the one vegan main, the wellington, which was really tasty but the veg was super salty. He had the sirloin, which he said was good but moult worth the £31 price tag. We had puddings. My fruity Belgian waffle sundae was a delight! His sticky toffee pudding was the best he’s ever had and said made up for any niggles with the rest of the meal. Overall we really enjoyed our experience and would go back.

Took my grandson for his Sunday Roast this afternoon (8/10/23) which I can’t fault the quality of the food although very pricey for a child, but anyway, that aside & the reason for this was the two sloths serving behind the bar…totally appalling in their attitude & customer service. They both found it very funny how much they were yawning between themselves & how tired they were…in front of customers, while serving as they were paying their bills. Neither smiled or were particularly pleasant to these guests. I went in to re order my grandsons pudding as the girl who took my original order (or so I thought) hadn’t put it through, even though I’d asked for the menu & I said I’d have the multi ice cream sundae. So I re ordered saying I’d have every flavour offered. Out comes just chocolate with the explanation that the kitchen couldn’t basically be bothered to add all the variations that id asked for!! Seems petty, but it was the girl’s attitude that annoyed me, working in the hospitality industry myself. Conclusion…good (pricey) food, rubbish staff…there must be other better people out there fgs.

Just popped in for a quick stop after visiting the wonderful Lacock Abbey. On the positives, the staff were kind and seated us quickly. We had cream tea which was nice. Unfortunately we must have hit rush hour because it was pretty busy, we waited for a while to be served and it took a long time to pay.

Sunday lunch for 6 of us. Absolutely lovely atmosphere, so relaxed, staff friendly, no rushing. Ordered various roasts - the potatoes were crispy and we all cleared our plates. Eton mess for dessert and coffee. I chose the Fox and hounds because it was equidistant for me and my siblings but it was well worth the hour’s drive!!

We booked the private room for an 80th birthday lunch and were so well looked after by all the attentive staff, considering how busy the hotel and restaurant were that Sunday. The room was quiet and warm; perfect for elderly guests. We rather over-ordered, particularly the sharing platters, as each piece was huge, but we were able to take them home afterwards as they were so delicious we didn't want to waste them! The roast beef was appreciated by everyone but the treacle tart was a bit disappointing, it was dry, lacked flavour and needed custard (which had been pre-ordered but wasn't available to us all on the day) and so that was a little disappointing. Otherwise, we had a lovely day and would definitely return. Thank you very much.
