Sunday lunch for 6 of us. Absolutely lovely atmosphere, so relaxed, staff friendly, no rushing. Ordered various roasts - the potatoes were crispy and we all cleared our plates. Eton mess for dessert and coffee. I chose the Fox and hounds because it was equidistant for me and my siblings but it was well worth the hour’s drive!!

Wonderful little place, stopped in there today just to get a cold drink, unfortunately I'd arrived just as they were closing, but, the two people there were happy to let me get a couple of drinks which I enjoyed outfront before popping the glasses back by the door! What a lovely place. Food was fantastic, however service seemed a little abrupt at times. But saying that, with only two working out front and only open for 3 hours over a lunch period then maybe politeness is sacrificed for hot tasty food!! But as I said the food was good and hot. Big thumbs up for this place and would definitely return.

It was good that the pub was very dog friendly and we were looked after attentively but, despite the external appearance, internally it was rather lacking in character and with as many tables crammed in as possible. When I phoned to book, I was told that there were two veggie options but in fact there was one. There's trade to be had, so why not give people proper options so that they might come back?

Food nice enough, well cooked and enough choice to keep you well fed. Wasnt any atmosphere, or anything different for 14th February. Havnt been here for a while, and due to the fact they automatically add service charge, will not come back again. Service was good, but nothing worthy of the additional charge. Best part of a £100 for 2, it isnt exactley cheap either.

Good - Food, a refreshing change from mass-catering, bland, uniform pub grub. Nicely presented, tasty and nothing seemed microwaved. A miracle nowadays. Wine, nice choices by the glass, fairly priced and served at the right temperature. Wonderful, heavy cotton napkins - almost extinct in all but the most gastro of gastro pubs. A joy to find. Thank you! Not so good - slightly frosty, brusque reception. You can't underestimate that first point of contact and it certainly could have been warmer. What a pity for such a potentially fabulous experience. Will be back for dinner and, hopefully, a little more welcoming welcome.

Took ages to find it as signage is inadequate (had to ask a local for directions). Had spoken to someone there earlier to make sure they were open as we were driving 30-odd miles to get there. So disappointed. We have been to The fox on so many occasions, we are a walking club and always, when in the area, call in to have numerous pints and food. There’s always 4 or 5 of us and although we never think to book the staff can usually accommodate us. Went in today and were surprised at how empty it was. We thought nothing of it and ordered our beer and food. To be fair the beer was great and the food, chicken pie, was very tasty. When we got the bill we discovered there was a £13 charge for service. £13 for bringing the food from the kitchen to our table. Needless to say we will now eat in the pub down the road when we walk there. So so disappointed.

My friend and I have often meet up at the Fox and Hounds and usually the staff are helpful to our needs. She has to have a gluten free and a low sodium diet, so menus can be quite limiting for her. But this pub has always been very good at making Gluten batter for the Fish, until now. The waitress seemed really put out that she had to ask the Chef if this could be done, the answer came back no. So she asked if the fish could be cooked without the batter. At first the waitress said no it was all pre-battered, then decided to check with the chef. It turned out it was possible to have the fish without the batter, great! Our food arrive, I will say my Green Thai Curry was very nice. I noticed my friend looking very carefully at her fish, then I asked her if it was cooked? The middle was raw, I could see it wasn’t at all flaky in the middle and cold to the touch. When our plates were cleared we were asked if everything was ok, my friend said her fish was raw in the middle, to be told it was the bit near the skin and just looked like that! Rubbish! The plate were taken away and the fish was going to be checked by the chef, but nobody came back and said anything, until my friend asked the waitress as she passed by. Only to be told that the fish was cooked, which it obviously wasn’t! No apology was given, no money taken off the bill, no free coffees offered, No customer service! I thought pubs were trying to encourage customers, but not this one!

What a disappointment!!! Despite website saying they still cater for gluten free customers, I was told that I had to have let them know in advance and prebook, so no I couldn't have the gluten free battered fish with chips, which I usually have. This has never happened before. The website just says: “please tell the bar staff on arrival and they will inform the kitchen”. The waitress did go and ask the chef if he could help out, but no he couldn't. I then asked if the “catch of the day” came pre-battered and if not could I have it batterless - many restaurant and pubs are able to offer this option. She consulted with the chef who said it was possible! Hurray, I thought. Not so. The fish appeared to get cold very quickly, which I ignored and then I found the last quarter was not cooked through. When I explained why I had left quite a lot of fish, she insisted the fish WAS cookethrough, it just looked that way because it was the bit near the skin, and after showing it to the chef he apparently agreed with her. However, I KNOW it was definitely not cooked through. It looked uncooked, and if you touched it with your cutlery it was not flaking apart, it was still in its raw state of being stuck together. I should like to refer them to the seafood nutrition.org site which clearly confirms that cooked white fish flakes apart!! Needless to say, we won't be returning.

We booked the private room for an 80th birthday lunch and were so well looked after by all the attentive staff, considering how busy the hotel and restaurant were that Sunday. The room was quiet and warm; perfect for elderly guests. We rather over-ordered, particularly the sharing platters, as each piece was huge, but we were able to take them home afterwards as they were so delicious we didn't want to waste them! The roast beef was appreciated by everyone but the treacle tart was a bit disappointing, it was dry, lacked flavour and needed custard (which had been pre-ordered but wasn't available to us all on the day) and so that was a little disappointing. Otherwise, we had a lovely day and would definitely return. Thank you very much.

I thought hard about this bad review as we have had some good lunches here but our latest visit was a rip off. We paid for our drinks at the bar and then asked for a menu. We were given a full menu and looked at the section labelled Lunch as it was lunchtime! We placed our order at the bar as we couldn’t see another staff member. Our food order was £12.50 each on the lunch menu. We are and food was ok. My husband paid and we left. He then mentioned it cost over £30. I assumed they’d made an error by adding on our already paid for drinks. We returned and apparently because we hadn’t stressed we ordered from the lunch menu they had charged us an extra £5 per meal even though it was exactly the same as the £12.50 meal. We ordered at lunchtime!! Worse still they added on a tip of £3.50 without asking! A total of £38.50 for a £25 meal. Sadly won’t return and will not recommend.
