Peggy's is now under new management. Peggy has returned to Greece and been replaced by a relaxed Antipodean. Good quality, home cooked food right next to the train station. A choice of toasted sandwiches and home made soup. Nice choice of teas - not like chain coffee shops which make dreadful tea. And a good range of cakes for afternoon tea - very handy for Strawberry hill station but also the University and Strawberry Hill House.

My husband and I were on way back home from a very early funeral- having had nothing to eat. Went into Peggy's off the train to get a bacon roll. She had run out of rolls so offered to make a bacon sandwich. Ok- fine. Mine was ok- not particularly fresh bread but edible. My husband's had one piece of bread which was so stale it was curling up. The other slice seemed OK- not brilliant! I told him he should say something but he wouldn't. Think we felt it a bit ridiculous to make a fuss about a sandwich. In the end he left half the top slice and just ate the bottom half and the bacon. We had already paid so when we left said the bread was stale. Peggy looked at us amazed and said we should have said something. I said I had told my husband to say something but that I was surprised she had served it up. We're talking sandwiches here- not a gourmet meal. Anyone knows when they are making a sandwich whether the bread is fresh or not. I would never have served this to my family let alone to people who are paying me £3.00 for it. Won't be going back which is a shame because it is just down the road from where we live. Peggy needs to up her game. Wouldn't recommend!

Popped into Peggy's with my chicken vindaloo that I had just bought in Manchester. Like all typical local station cafes she didn't mind me eating it there and then. She stopped serving all other customers to attend to me....yes me....me me me ....because I ....yes I had a train to catch! Look at me - the person catching the train! She then had a bath, laundered all her clothing and hosed the cafe down with disinfectant before making me a coffee, which I didn't really want. What I did want though, was to use the bathroom! Yes that's right. the public go int o the cafe so it must be a public toilet. When I say public I mean me....yes me....rememember me? I'm the person catching a train! I didn't have anything and I couldn't pay by credit card, not only that, Peggy muttered something about my Cath Kidston bag which upset me so much that I came on Tripadvisor to be jolly rude about her. Because that's what I ....(the person who catches the train) do. Altogether a lovely experience.

Went in for the first time to grab a coffee while waiting for my train in a completely empty cafe and service was all normal and nice enough as expected. Realised while drinking my coffee that I had a half eaten protein bar in my bag I could grab now while I drank my coffee. Same as anyone would do anywhere really when they’ve bought a hot drink (in the context of a casual station cafe). At this point the owner who was sat at the table opposite huffed and puffed and walked into the kitchen then back out muttering “what more can I do”. I thought maybe she had just received bad news. Then a woman walks in who receives a very warm welcome by name so I’m assuming she’s a local regular and the owner lady launches into a huge and loud rant about how she hates young people in the cafe because they bring their own food and don’t they know she has a business to run. I’ll say again I was literally the only other person person there until now. No hoardes of people waiting for a table. The local woman leaves and owner lady sits back down with her paper. I’m just finishing off my coffee to go catch my train when another woman comes in (I’m assuming maybe a nurse friend) and literally starts replacing a dressing for a wound/burn on the owner ladies hand out in full view. I notice she wasn’t wearing the blue plasters you need for handling food. Literally at the table. So I get up and leave.I can only assume that the cafe must be struggling financially or something really bad has happened to make the owner so bitter and petty, but then you’d think she’d go out of her way to be warm and welcoming to everyone to encourage good reviews due to the amount of traffic that must come out of the train starion nearby. Now I’d rather just grab a drink from the station stop and sit waiting on the platform.

I have visited this cafe many times now as there is not much else around Strawberry Hill but every time hoping that it might be a slightly better experience... it never is. The attitude and rudeness you get on arrival is absolutely appalling, the owner makes you feel like you are a massive inconvenience for making her do you a coffee! How dare you pull her away from her paper! The menu is bland and boring, often get stale bread, no salad, no baguettes,Jacket potato’s or anything exciting, basically if you’re looking for some ham or premixed tub of tuna mayonnaise into some hard stale bread this is your place to go! I regularly walk past and often see the lady in the same clothes as the previous day, not great hygiene for somebody working with food. No gloves, no hand washing after she touches her hair and face. It is such as shame, as a local resident I would love to spend more time here as it is in a great location, sadly just run by somebody who has clearly lost any passion and enthusiasm she may have once had. Poorly run but could be fantastic with a change of hands! After reading a lot of other negative reviews one would hope she might take some of these comments on board but obviously she thinks it’s all fine there!

If you have to wait to get your tea/coffee/sandwich it means that Peggy is dealing with other customers who got in first. As any decent cafe owner would. Just take a magazine, sit down, enjoy the atmosphere of a busy neighbourhood cafe, and Peggy will see to your order as soon as she can. Failing that, if you are in a really big hurry, ask around to see if any of the other customers will mind if you go ahead of them. People are generally so nice there that they will let you jump the queue.

Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to have the tea I politely asked for. I came into the cafe, waited for the woman behind the counter who was chatting with her, I assume, friends. I asked for my tea, she huffed and asked if I wanted it to take away. I said “no, in please” which was greeted with more huffing. I stood at the counter, thinking I would have to pay upfront. She then said “we’ll go sit down then”. I went to sit down to which she muttered “wow”. To this I was disgusted by. So I simply said “actually, don’t worry about it”. As I went to walk out she said “unbelievable”. I had had enough at this point. I turned to ask why she said that? And she shouted “I have other orders to make”! I was more than happy to wait but this woman was honestly awful. I was embarrassed. She should definitely not be in customer services.

This place has a really devoted customer-base. Peggy seems to know by name everyone who regularly comes in, and she greets them warmly. Her coffee is excellent, the cakes and sandwiches are delicious, and I have heard, though not tested this out, that her bacon rolls are a staple breakfast item for a large swathe of the local population. Peggy's Pantry is not at all like the high-street chains of coffee shops, so if you are looking for an extended menu of different coffees, teas, milks and syrupy additions, or mass-produced sandwiches, don't come here. If what you want is a smaller choice, higher quality and made before your eyes, then Peggy's excels. As for the few grumpy reviewers...all they had to do was go away and never come back.

Hoy, en la entrada buscando un sándwich y un café, para ir ya mi tren era debido en 10, ella me dijo "Yo no soy para bruscamente abierta". On returning to Peggy's Pantry once again for refreshment, a number of things really stood out. The superb quality of the coffee, the delicious food, the excellent service, the handiness of the location (next to Strawberry Hill station and en route to St Mary's University). But do you know what, my fellow reviewers and readers? The key differentiator is the uniqueness of Peggy's! Oh yes....it's not one of those bland chains that you find anywhere with the same dull people bidding you a meaningless 'Enjoy' or ' Have a nice day'. Peggy's is real! After my first visit I did toy with the idea of a review entitled Peggy's Purgatory - the service was rude to almost a comic level. But I'm a fair man and I thought a second chance was deserved. I was also quite hungry. So I stepped in with my wife and we enjoyed two freshly made sandwiches (with Walkers crisps garnish) and some very tasty cake. The tea was also very good. We did almost see her wobble when there was some indecision on sandwich filling - extra parma ham could have been a step too far but she came good in the end. Perhaps the only small sign of possible rudeness was when asking about her range of teas she abruptly asked us for more information. We gave it and moved on quickly to our table. As John Lennon once said Give Peace a Chance. I say give Peggy a chance too.

After a long journey, mostly along the road less travelled and with a change at Clapham Junction, I chanced upon Peggy's in the beautiful hamlet (other cigars are available) of Strawberry Hill. She greeted me with warmth and we shared an anecdote or two about the use of existentialism in Dostoevsky's later work. 'Do you have eel?' I asked with a twinkle in my eye...'No Sir' said she...'But will a surfeit of lampreys on olive focaccia do?' 'Just the ticket!' said I 'And I only have 42 seconds to catch my train'. I've been here a few times to grab some food before my train and I've now learnt that if I want a sandwich, she will take at least 10 minutes to make it so I no longer buy one so some crisps will do. I offer her a £10 note and she huffs and says "I have no change, you can't have it". No apology or resolution. So I put them back and ask "I don't suppose you have a toilet here I could quickly use?" Huffing and rolling her eyes she replies "well it's for customers, so no you can't"She was so rude and treated me as if I were a child. Never again, don't give them the business.

Such a disappointment - there were four of us, two down from Norfolk for the weekend and we were so looking forward to some refreshments. I felt I had to write in when I saw the review mentioning the 'friendly' service; possibly I came on a bad day but the woman behind the counter was really far from friendly: brusque was more like it! When we were ordering, she barely looked up from the sandwich she was making at the time. Pretty much none of the breads were available for our sandwiches, for which she did not apologise. I also heard her making a fairly rude remark about the customers ('I'd like to put classical music on but "they" wouldn't like it'). The food was reasonably priced but the drinks (which come in bottles in a fridge) were very expensive. I felt as though the woman didn't want us in her cafe; it was towards the end of the day on a Saturday and I got the impression she just wanted to close. Great location and good service but they need to re-think their wrap. I upgraded to the larger one and got the tiniest bit of chicken in it.

The staff made us feel very welcome and the service was both friendly and efficient. We had a family reunion with lots of children of various ages . We had a great lunch and have fond memories. Would recommend this pub . Special thank you to Jade .

Just wow! Have ordered a takeaway on a few occasion from here and it has not disappointed. The pizza is magnificent. Although the tiramisu portion is big it is too creamy and lacks that coffee hit! But the pizza will have me placing my next order soon!!!

Terrible experience, mixed up our drinks;which was only two coffees. Lots of staff milling around doing nothing to help.

Have been a few times now and the food is amazing, I have never had anything bad yet. All staff are very friendly and welcoming. They have loads of space to sit and enjoy you food. The little shop they have has a lot of lovely stuff for sale. Will Defo be back and Defo recommend.
