Food was excellent, restaurant is nicely furnished and staff were polite and friendly. Not cheap, at just under £300 for dinner for 3 people- we had a couple of drinks each, starter, main and dessert. A place for special occasions. A few niggles which, if ironed out, would have made it a 5 star experience: my £12 Aperol Spritz (without ice) measured about a third of a wineglass, which seemed rather mean, very little prosecco in it and it was room temperature. Two of our desserts were forgotten completely, with a half hour wait between mine arriving and my family receiving theirs - only a brief mumbled apology from the waiter. I think a bigger apology and/or discount should have been offered as it spoilt the flow of the meal. It would be nice if they'd offered to take our coats on arrival. We did really enjoy the food, but the niggles might put me off returning.

I recently dined at Pearly Cow and, unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations. The portions were surprisingly small given the high prices, and the food lacked the depth of flavor I was hoping for. I ordered the £36 duck breast, which was disappointingly small and lacked seasoning, making it rather tasteless. The mashed potatoes were another letdown, tasting more like pre-packaged supermarket fare than a freshly made side. My partner opted for a salad with prawns, adding £17 for the prawns, expecting a generous portion of quality seafood. However, what arrived was a small bowl with only six tiny prawns, which felt like poor value for money. While the atmosphere was fine, it didn’t leave a lasting impression, and overall, the experience did not justify the cost. We left feeling disappointed and definitely won’t be returning.

Had been wanting to visit for a long time, the insta reviews and claims of "York's best Sunday lunch" etc. It did certainly deliver. Perfect service and food. It's at a premium to most Sunday lunches but well worth it for a lovely experience

I recently visited this restaurant for a Sunday roast and was initially impressed by the lovely decor and cosy atmosphere—it definitely set the stage for a nice meal. However, the Sunday roast itself was a huge disappointment. The plate looked sad and lacking in color, and the flavors just weren’t there. It seemed like the whole dish was missing even basic seasoning, which left everything bland and underwhelming. At £34 per person for two courses, I expected much more, especially given the price tag. Sadly, I don’t think the meal justified the cost, and I left feeling unsatisfied. While the setting was charming, the food really let the experience down. I wouldn’t rush back for another Sunday roast.

Sadly it was a category of errors. More ‘semi alive cow’ with blue chewy cold roast beef (and I like rare). Really bland and flavourless roast dinner and sad Bloody Mary with no spice. They served my 8 month pregnant friend a vodka in her virgin cocktail after she clearly stated she was pregnant and expected her to pay for the full priced alcohol one. We were then rushed to leave when the waiter was ask to amend the price accordingly. Nice decor and crème brûlée. Recommend going to the old liquor store or anywhere else if you like good food and service : (

Had dinner here on a weekend break in January. Starters were very good: we went for oysters (very fresh) and the artichoke salad (pickled veg, but the chickpea sauce was very clever). Mains: outstanding. Duck was perfectly cooked and the balance of the dish was wonderful. Guinea Fowl not quite perfect - almost moist throughout, but just a little dry at the edges. "A very commendable effort" as my wife put it, but again the balance of the dish was really good. Chef clearly has a gift for conceiving plates of food - these are top quality dishes, wouldn't be out of place in top end London restaurants. Desserts: need work. Creme brulee was executed fine but twice as large as it needed to be. Sticky toffee "souffle" a disappointment - it was the size of a generous Yorkshire pudding, quite heavy, and incredibly sweet. Walked around York afterwards in -1 degrees with no coat on to get rid of the sugar overdose. Cheese menu isn't thought out - I don't want just one cheese for £12 and I don't want three for >£30. Just offer a cheese plate at a sensible price. Overall: worth it for the mains, and the starters are up to par. Get dessert somewhere else.

I really wanted to love it here, but it was pretty bad. They brought our food out and then didn’t even so much as look in our direction again. I hate chasing servers down and also shouldn’t have to. We ordered cote de boeuf medium rare but it came out blue, practically inedible because it was so raw. We had a concert to go to afterwards so didn’t have time for it to be remade anyway. The chips aren’t chips, more like potato pave which is fine, just don’t call them chips. Didn’t check if we wanted any sauces, extra drinks, or to check if the food was ok. We kept looking over to the waiters by the entrance, trying to catch their eye, even staring at them sometimes- I’m sure they saw, but they just didn’t care it seemed. When making the booking for half 5, the email said they needed the table back by 7. But they didn’t take our food away until 7, and didn’t ask then if it was ok (even though it clearly wasn’t because barely anything had been eaten). We had to leave at 7:10 so had to just get up and pay on the way out. No time for desserts. When paying they asked if everything was ok and when I mentioned what was wrong with the food the waitress was rude with her tone of voice, clearly bored and frustrated by us. No offer of any kind of compensation. And then had the cheek to add a 12.5% service fee when we weren’t served at all!! We asked them to remove it. I can’t recommend this place. They clearly just don’t give a stuff about their customers at all.

This was our second visit to the Pearly Cow, first was at the end of June for a significant birthday celebration whilst staying at the equally impressive No.1 Guesthouse. Planning another trip to York for the Christmas market, we couldn’t resist the temptation of another excellent meal at the Pearly Cow, we weren’t disappointed, as before the food and service were exceptional and we had another really enjoyable evening. The question now is, do we have to come back every time we visit York? (To be honest I would just for the beef fat chips!)

Visited Pearly Cow on a Saturday evening while in York. We couldn't have chosen a better restaurant. We started with a tempura oyster each. Our starters were beef tartare and heritage tomato and burrata. All dishes were incredible. Our mains were a rib eye and sirloin steak with fat chips and seasonal vegetables. Everything was cooked to perfection. The service was great and the staff were extremely pleasant. It's fine dining so expect a hefty bill at the end but for this quality of food it is worth every penny. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough.

Ok so when you look at the prices you start to have different expectations. Inside this place is very nice designed in a wonderful old building. Unfortunately as soon as we stepped in this is where our experience did not live up to expectations. Service -We were left in the bar and 15mins after our table should have been ready we had to remind the staff of our booking. -Multiple times food and drink from other tables came to our table. -We were given the wrong bill - We had to ask for our coats back and the staff we unsure where they were (Bill is 12% for service) Food Our main of beef was fantastic and the thick chips were brilliant. A side salad we ordered was so salty we could not eat it. We both had to get a bottle of water from a local shop after the meal. Overall brilliant food but with a chef who must have shares in a salt mine and lousy service.

This place was recommended to us. It was very overpriced for not overly special food. I was especially disappointed that I had to ask TWICE for spoons so we could put the sides of vegetables onto our plates, whilst our meals were getting cold. One of the sides was exactly the same as the veg on my plate, so why would I want mire of the same? The menu is not very inspiring. Disappointed all round.

This is an upmarket fancy restaurant that's so close to being excellent. It's still very good and worth visiting for the fish tacos alone. I've been twice and there been three things that have disappointed on both occasions preventing it from being excellent and up there with the very best . 1 the butter isn't served at a spreadable temperature. 2 the table has been wobbly. Both times the staff have fixed it when asked but it's annoying to ask as the tables are quite tight it's awkward. 3. They've got this stupid wicker table in the entrance with a flared base that sticks out more at the ground level that the top and I've nearly tripped over it both times. I would pay good money to put that ghastly thing on a bonfire. It's a very good restaurant that with a few tiny tweaks would feel more worth the price.

¡No puedo decir suficientes cosas buenas! Good food and service was great but we were immensely poorly after, having saved ourselves for dinner we brought this to the attention of the establishment and were told an investigation had been raised. We were unwell for multiple days after and we were told the investigation proved they had no other customers mention so there for we were not compensated. We had multiple seafood dishes and raw meat and would have thought due to the making two people unwell that they would look at support our worries raised but our email responding to the inquiry was not replied to. This honestly made a wonderful experience turn very sour as it’s one thing to make us ill but another to not support our complaint and upset with any response. I would not recommend as they didn’t have an answer as to why we were so unwell so I don’t trust they have a good supplier and therefore I shall not be return. I would think twice before booking as clearly they are just out for your money and not your wellbeing!!!

We had "Afternoon Sea" - actually a tasting menu lunch, but served with all the appearance of a classic English Afternoon Tea. There were six superb dishes (they generously replaced the oysters, which neither of us like, with superb cured salmon), of which the best, for me, was the Cod and Crab Taco (followed very closely by the Scallop with Peas and Bacon) - or was it the Moules Mariniére, a very generous helping with exquisite sauce? We'll just HAVE to go back, to be able to decide! Excellent service, that catered very well for my wife's temporary mobility problems, as well as recognising my birthday with a complimentary glass. Just couldn't fault it - thank you!

Do you recognize your restaurant? There must be at least 100 more photos, when my wife said that this was her favorite place, she wasn’t joking. You haven't checked anything. You accused my wife without even doing an investigation. You allowed yourself something that is not acceptable. You work in hospitality, you must try to resolve any conflicts. Went yesterday for the afternoon Sea I decided to treat my husband to his favourite food seafood. We started with tiger prawn cocktail, oysters then a trio stack of dishes arrived mussels, cod and crab tacos, scallops in Smokey bacon and peas and finally a smoked salmon scone with horseradish crème fraiche . Everything was delicious very fresh and imaginative. I will definitely recommend and we will be back to try other things on the menu. The staff were very friendly and efficient and attentive.

One of the best dining experiences in quite a while! The atmosphere, decor, food and staff were 10/10. Our first time dining here after a recommendation from a friend who lives in York. We would not hesitate to come back, and urge people who enjoy good quality food to visit!

Absolutely fantastic find! We love visiting York and The Pearly Cow is on our foodie list now. What a hidden gem we couldn’t recommend highly enough. Very attentive staff and the food was truly outstanding. Thank you for such a lovely evening for our anniversary. 10/10

Interesting experience. The food itself was 10/10 and really, that's what you're there for. However we had a couple of minor niggles. No stock of the one apple cider they sell. Our table was wobbly (tried to fix, couldn't, eventually moved us). One of the dishes wasn't exactly as outlined on the menu (in fact made without two of the listed ingredients) but then they took that off the bill without us asking. Overall a good time, felt value for money despite a high price, and the food was magnificent. Wouldn't rush back though.

On arrival, we were greeted nicely and shown to our table by the front of house, but not offered to take our jackets (which all other consequent guests seem to have offered to them). It took around 15 minutes to have our food and drink orders taken and around 20 minutes later we were served our starters, but still no sign of the two diet cokes we ordered. Our drinks arrived half way through the starting course with a healthy level of melted ice filling up the bottom of the glasses. The soup of the day starter was lovely, but the ham hock terrine was slightly bland. There was another lengthy wait between courses, allowing plenty of time for the roast beef Sunday lunch we ordered to get cold. The mushroom and pumpkin Wellington as well as the roast veg were tasty and the right temperature however. Once finished, we had our plates sat in front of us for an extended period before being removed. The main issue we encountered was a lack of attentiveness by the staff who were well mannered and polite when they finally got around to seeing you, but with the restaurant not entirely full and not being very big in the first place I would suggest it is probably not worth the 12.5% automatically added “discretionary” service charge.

Do not go here, party of 6 went here 5 people ate oysters and all 5 were ill for days. The restaurant will not accept any liability or even give a refund for the £1100 bill they could not give a damn. Absolutely appalling.

The Pearly Cow was recommended to us and it did not disappoint. Better than expected. Try all 3 tacos! And the oysters. The duck and steak were delicious. The service was fantastic. Thank you to Alice for waiting our table. My 1 gripe is that the tables are too close together. Other than that it was tip top

Simply stunning. The salt-aged duck is sublime. Even the while-you-wait sourdough is great. The cheeseboard (I had Harrogate Blue) was spot on and the flavours combined beautifully. With my main I had the Vina Tondonia 2009, probably the best glass of red I’ve ever had the pleasure to drink. With my cheese I had the fine tawny port. If I were to say one thing, I’d have liked a larger selection of port - although this is very subjective and probably doesn’t reflect the taste and preferences of most. Overall superb and would recommend to anyone and everyone.

Our party of seven went on Friday evening and had a very nice meal, drinks and excellent service from the restaurant. Unfortunately 6 of the seven came down with fevers, diarrhoea and vomiting leading to us all having to take Monday off work - some unpaid. We raised this with management and they are responding to this news in a proactive manner. They’ve said no-one else has come back to them with these symptoms. The only member not to have the symptoms was someone who didn’t have oysters. It was brilliant aside from the obvious.

Really recommend, we visited as a family and service was perfect and the food was such a high standard. My daughter hasn't stopped talking about her delicious pasta dish from the children's menu. We were lucky enough to eat from the dinner and breakfast menus, wow you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended.

We were so excited to visit Pearly Cow after reading some reviews and seeing the menu online and we were not disappointed at all! The restaurant is beautifully designed and laid out. The entire place has a very refined yet friendly vibe and the staff reflect this perfectly too. The staff were very friendly and attentive and the food was uncomplicated and fantastic with amazing seasonal flavours. It's a great thing to see a chef letting high quality produce speak for it's self. Everything we had to eat was beautifully flavoured and seasoned and paired with extremely complimentary flavours.

For visitors .. if it helps you choose where to eat .. York has a substantial and varied range of dining options but there’s only a handful of really nice restaurants that stand comparison with any around the country . Star in the City set a new bar for dining in York , and still retains its place due in no small part to the perfect riverside setting ..and was latterly joined and possibly usurped in quality over the years by Skosh and then Roots as quality Michelin recognised dining in the city exploded . I think the Pearly Cow , formerly the Grange Hotel (which always struggled with a dining identity ) now immediately deserves to be in that elite group, and carves a little niche for itself as the finest steakhouse in York .. not necessarily because it has the absolute finest steak , as that is subjective .. but it has beautiful fire grilled steak along with a classier , baroque style dining decor tailor made for special occasions than its rivals .. because although nice established places like the Whippet , Tomahawk and Gaucho can each on their day match the steak quality , they simply can’t replicate the quality of ambiance and upmarket architectural style of the Pearly Cow. The restaurant is totally relaxed and unpretentious, has shall we say , “ premium pricing “ and a classy high end vibe . The staff who served us on Saturday evening were exemplary.. well spoken , attentive and courteous. The food , our table had seafood and steak , was superb .. we tried the toffee soufflé for dessert and that was great also .. The sides were probably reassuringly expensive if you’re from London but asking a Yorkshireman to pay £8 extra for a handful of chips with a steak is a stretch .. never mind beef fat I’d like them dipped in gold for that price .. and the cheese course at £12 a pop isn’t good value anywhere ..so little tweaks may be necessary going forward so the quality of the experience isn’t overshadowed by a memory of how much they charge for sides and cheese ! The wine list is ok .. certainly inclusive to all , but maybe a little pedestrian.. more South Australian and Napa red options would be just as profitable for the business I’m sure but suit the steaks well at competitive prices for the diner . I think I can sum up this restaurant perfectly by saying that I’ve been waiting for Hawksmoor to open a restaurant in York , and I think these guys just have .. and called it the Pearly Cow ! Fabulous restaurant..Highly recommended..

Well, following on from my previous 'mixed thoughts visit' we thought we would give the PC a second visit....and glad we did, as i mentioned previously, fantastic setting décor, on entering this occasion it seemed like a different place, the tables were full, it seemed to have a all round good atmosphere. Our table was ready and we was shown to it by the waitress, who was pleasant and informative on all the dishes and wine throughout the evening. For starters we shared Oysters (my favourite) and Tacos, mains opted for Steaks, and the Halibut, once again all cooked to perfection...note to all get the Chips !. finished with the Soufflé, and cheese board, and again the right choices. I had opted for different wines throughout the evening like to try and pair with different courses, and the waitress was very knowledgeable, and recommended some good choices. The Food Overall the evening was twice as good as our previous visit, and that was made by the service, so thanks to Jordan and his team, also big thanks to Sergio, an interesting guy. Not forgetting the Chef.. Yes we shall return

We dined with friends at The Pearly Cow and our experience from start to finish was first class. Staff were friendly, professional and very knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. The ambiance of the restaurant was lovely and our waitress and other staff were very attentive throughout. Our party ordered oysters and the duck tacos to start, followed by steaks and Halibut as main courses. All cooked to perfection with lovely flavours and beautifully presented. We chose cheese board and the sticky toffee soufflé for deserts and were so pleased with our choice. The cheese board was plentiful and the sticky toffee soufflé was delicious, the best I’ve ever had. Thank you Early Cow, we look forward to returning to dine on Christmas Day and would highly recommend.

Incredible experience, my wife has been previously in the summer and upon her return was equally as blown away as my first experience here. The quality of food was outstanding, well curated and explained brilliantly by the team at Pearly Cow, we spent two nights at the hotel next door only to eat there both nights as we were intrigued to try the rest of the menu. If you’re planning to visit York we 1001/10 recommend

We visited for our anniversary last month and every detail was beautiful. The little note on our table, the gifted glasses of Prosecco and the gorgeous surroundings ❤️ Our waitresses were lovely and informed about the food. One helped us decide between the two dishes we were contemplating. We had the tacos to start which were like a party in my mouth 😂 We then had the beef to share which was exceptional. My only feedback would be to include a couple of sides. I can’t wait to go back - I’m looking for any reason ❤️🫶🏼

Appalling service right from arrival. Yes we arrived early we were asked if we wished to be seated at our table or in the bar; we opted for our table to be told that wasn’t possible as the table was still occupied. No problem to the bar we went ! After being seated for at least 10 minutes I approached the bar to be advised that the waiter would take our order. To be fair the bar staff were good albeit harassed and under pressure. We finally were seated at our table and we waited and waited 20 minutes. The couple seated at the adjacent table were seated and their order taken before ours, I even commented that I felt we were invisible ! Finally our order was taken. The food was average/good nothing exceptional and whilst the mains were averagely priced the the sides represented very poor value ! The mains were cleared; no effort made to check whether everything was satisfactory . The desert menus was offered and left again our adjacent neighbours who sat down 15 minutes after us their order was again taken and their desserts delivered before our order taken!! I had to summon the attention of a passing waiter to place our order. Finally as the restaurant emptied we felt invisible having to loudly attract the attention of someone to ask for the bill. I obviously refused to pay the service applied to the bill as clearly customer service is plainly non existent. Clearly a shame as the restaurant and adjoining hotel is very well appointed but clearly its staff let it down ! We won’t return and can’t recommend

We had the most amazing dinner at Pearly Cow. The staff were exceptional, with great knowledge of the menus, both food and drink. Service was fantastic and the whole evening felt like a special experience. To start we tried the salted cod and crab taco and the beef fillet tartare taco, both were delightful. We then shared the cote de boeuf and added beef fat chips - these were the star of the show. Everything on the plate was rich and flavoursome, as well as perfectly cooked. To finish we tried the sticky toffee soufflé to share - amazing. Fantastic menu, small but perfectly formed. A true quality dining experience, perfect for a special occasion. There's no doubt that this place should hold accolades. Would absolutely recommend, thank you to the whole team for a wonderful evening.

Nice ambience. Prices were on the higher side, but the menu had a good offering, and we knew it wouldn't be cheap. Our main observation about the starters and mains were they weren't very hot, warm at best. They should have been hotter. the lobster starter was good, and the cauliflower was tasty. My Duck main was nice. Sides were a reasonable price for the setting apart from the beef fat chips - £8 too expensive (plus service) desserts ranged from £10-£12 which seemed also excessive (plus service) other than that the food was enjoyable. No draught lager/beer which I guess is the norm for a lot of restaurants (large profit margins on bottles and obviously small quantities relatively speaking) Although this wasn't a bad experience, and I wanted to try this place, I probably wouldn't revisit. It just wasn't special enough overall.

Such a cute rustic cafe (fits perfectly with York’s aesthetic). So much choice on the menu, I went for a build your own. Service was lovely and so quick! Came here before over a year ago and everything was just as good as I remembered!
