We had no reservation for this restaurant but they had a table to accommodate us when we walked in ,we chose the set dinner menu and it was very nice for the price. The place had a nice relaxed atmosphere and the staff were pleasant and courteous. We will definitely go back.

Lovely piping hot food, really tasty and well presented. Good value for money.

Been here a few times when visiting York and never been disappointed, the panna cota dessert was unbelievable.

found this when looking at reviews under hidden gems and it certainly is. My wife and I had a 2 courses set meal which was excellent and brilliant value. The restaurant was not particularly busy but it is on the edge of the City Centre and it was also a Sunday night. The chef is obviously extremely good so I would suggest that give it a go when next in York.

We stumbled upon this lovely restaurant while sightseeing and I am so glad we did! We went at lunch time so it was quiet with only a couple of other tables in. The server was lovely from the get go :). The food was some of the best Italian food we've ever had. I had the lasagne and it was honestly the best lasagna I have ever had. I will 100% be going again next time we are in York!

One of our friends randomly chose this one for us. We had no expectations prior to going in, and we were simply wowed by the food, service and hospitality. It's run by a small crew and we were a group of 10- and they went above and beyond to make sure that we got served to the best of their ability. I would highly recommend it!

After reading a the rave reviews we decided to give this restaurant a try for our anniversary dinner with the family. The starters were ok but the mains were nothing to write home about. My daughter and husband had pasta carbonara and it was dire. Tinned ham with lots of cream - no peas or anything else in the sauce and definitely tasted of tinned mushroom soup. My husband makes a tonne better version at home. My skewer steak was ok. But nothing to rave about. My son had the cannelloni but it too was bland and had massive chunks of cheese in it. For dessert the gelato for the kids was ok. I had the biscoff bannoffee but there was no toffee sauce at all. Just a very heavy layer of cream. My husband had the tiramisu but there was no alcohol in it and the coffee flavour was nonexistent. Again t was very stodgy and massive layer of cream. Service was good albeit slow after mains were done. Sorry all….I’d give it a miss.

I’ve never noticed this place before and a friend booked it for a birthday and it was absolutely lovely! A hidden gem and the food was amazing. Will definitely return

Fantastic service and food. Generous options for the set lunch deal. Delicious food at a reasonable price. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Only downside was not having the full selection of wine available and it was very confusing which door to use, so much so that we almost left thinking it was closed! Highly recommended despite this.

The food at 31 Castlegate is delcious and beautifully plated. Maria was the hostess extraordinaire and an added bonus to the delicious meal. She was warm and friendly, gave us great suggestions. Kudos to the Chef! We left full and more than happy we close 31 Castlegate for our meal.

This restaurant is a quirky old building with welcoming ,friendly ,attentive staff . Great idea of the coat hanger . The food was amazing, nicest meal out in a long time and will definitely be going back . Just a few of things we did notice that could be improved on but will still be returning , was ,the cocktail menu was slightly grubby , the menu book felt and looked well used. Also the menu outside could do to be replaced as faded and difficult to read. But please do not let these few things put you off visiting . All in all the staff and food cannot be recommended enough.

We found this restaurant near where we were staying, they did an amazing set menu and the food was unreal, we went to york again and seen it has changed name and menu, if it is the same people cooking we would go back as it was so good before

Went for my birthday dinner. Restaurant lovely, staff very friendly and welcoming. Although menu was limited we all managed to pick starters and mains we all liked. Food was tasty and full of flavour. The restaurant also accommodated my husbands request to get in a small birthday cake for me. We will definitely return when back in York.

We visited York for dad’s 80th birthday and day one we booked for his birthday meal. The food was lovely. Everything we expected. It was presented beautifully and tasted wonderful. The restaurant is tastefully decorated and feels special but welcoming. The best part of the whole experience was the staff. They went out of their way to make us feel special even bringing dad a sweet with a candle in it. We all left having enjoyed a special meal made better and memorable by the quality of the food and the attention of the staff. Really worth a visit and we will hopefully come back again.

Great muscles, decent roast, good service. If you feel inebriated walking out from your table it's not you it's the floors, adds to the charm though. Note I had eaten half the muscles by the time I took the photo.

We went as a group of four for our Wedding Anniversary - only one waiter working who tried his best but at the end of day delivered poor customer service. I can quite honestly say I have never had a more average Sunday dinner. So dry and quite frankly overcooked. I was only given one slice of beef which was as tough as boots. I simply can’t recommend this place and would never return. We only paid half the cost of the meal and our drinks. Which was the only bonus of this place. Please give it a miss.

This restaurant is located in an historic house in the centre of York. We both had a lamb dish which was well presented with a seasonal theme. The food was well cooked, service was good. We will definitely return next time we are in York.

My girlfriend and I dined at 31 Castlegate this evening during an overnight visit to York for her birthday. Whilst the restaurant was quieter than we would have expected, we were absolutely doted upon by Dennis, who was very efficient, polite, and couldn’t do more for us. The food was exquisite and incredible value for money. We had a range of options (both vegan and non) and all were presented beautifully and tasted even better; especially my vegan mushroom tart starter! Should we come back to York I’d love to eat here again.
