Don't be misled into thinking this is just a wine bar. Although their wine selection is impressive, they also provide superb food.

We came upon 22 yards after leaving another place for being too much of a crush on a busy Saturday afternoon in York. 22 Yards was doing a good trade but felt like a haven of tranquility. When we looked at the menu we weren’t sure it sounded quite what we wanted but we ordered a few small plates and each one was so incredibly good it really thrilled us. The service was excellent - prompt and informative but not intrusive in any way. The choices of wines were delicious and didn’t disappoint. We chose a relatively inexpensive red Languedoc and it was perfect. I would definitely go back when in York. The only tiny negative was no WiFi in a low signal area but then it did mean we spent more time talking to each other 🤣

We had a really lovely evening… staff were super friendly and helpful and indulged us. The high spend could easily have been reduced… we treated ourselves to a very expensive bottle of wine! Lovely place, food, people! Their lunch time deal is really good value…

This place offers very little for the hype it promises. The best thing from the menu was the wine, but could not make up for the of the food. Where do I start... with the cooked oysters with cheese on top which took away the seasalted ooziness and creaminess of the raw state and transformed it into something hard to swallow, to the appalling steak tartare which I believe could be renamed salted tartare, as it was so salted, perhaps to cover a subpar meat that I could barely taste it. And by the way steak tartare is served with a raw eggyolk on top, not a diffuse white sauce resembling mayo. Scallop - gummy as rubber and tasteless. The steak was a bit better if it hadn t been for the tiny hair found in it. But overall terrible. Will never return.

Called here for a glass of wine, after dinner at a nearby restaurant, very friendly and a great atmosphere so we decided to go the next day for lunch.Tapas dishes which were very nice ,however there was only one other table occupied so it was sadly lacking in atmosphere. This may be better as an evening venue

Looked this place up for a cosy supper with my husband last night but we left after SMALL plates as the food was very disappointing. We had ordered anchovies that were so minute it was ridiculous. The tempura courgettes were badly described as they were deep fried without tempura batter and the chicken thigh dish was really a little gem salad with burnt chicken croutons. Haven’t eaten this badly in a long time and it pains me to say it. Waste of time and money.

Not a great experience from start to finish. All the food came out in drubs and drabs with some finishing mains as others arrived. We asked for a bottle of fizz as a surprise for the birthday girl and the waitress came over and how many glasses we wanted for the fizz! Also we ordered espresso martini’s and I don’t think the bar person had ever made one before as they came in a wine glass, no coffee beans and was simply dreadful! See the pic! The whole experience followed by a substantial bill put a downer on the evening and was thoroughly disappointing! Try anywhere else but here in York!

What delicious food and wine! We’re not wine experts but this was perfect - we tried the Merlot from the specials (Trentino doc), which was very professionally presented. We shared four small plates with focaccia and then a chocolate ganache dessert - stunning! Couldn’t fault the food at all. The staff were very professional and friendly and gave us recommendations, which was so helpful. They were reassuring without being over the top. Already thinking about our second visit.

People be warned !! Avoid at all cost . This place excels at ripping off tourists with its lazy, substandard , expensive food. This place has to be my biggest disappointment in York and it worries me that establishments such as this fleece the tourists that frequent our beautiful city. I had been longing to attend this place for a while now as it looks so appealing from the street. But you should never judge a book by its cover . The food was worse than terrible. There was no cheffing skills apparent in the small plates we ordered. The charcuterie board at £32 was an embarrassment for the city of York , lazily prepared with no presentation at all, a few scraps of sliced meats and some non descript cheese sparingly scattered on a wooden board . The manager was an absolute mess. He hasn’t got a clue and when we brought the food quality to his attention he thought he’d try and palm us off with the promise of extra cheese … literally , not listening and just throwing cheese at the problem . This nonchalant,” couldn’t give a damn because we rinse the transient tourists” approach to hospitality is not what York needs or deserves. After the managers pathetically weak intervention, I simply refused to pay for charcuterie board. I explained to the manager that the other dishes had not been “cheffed” and he took that as an insult to his staff and proceeded to ask me to leave . I was taking about the food but he took it personally very quickly …. I think he and his chef are in the wrong job !!

We so looked forward to this evening and it was such a massive let down. I was given a gift voucher by my daughter for my 62nd birthday to this establishment. To start the evening the wine we ordered was sold out so a similar alternative was offered at a more expensive price, so we had that. We then ordered a half meat board and half cheese board to share. We were assured this was enough but could order more as we went along. Well both boards were very measly in portions so when finished we ordered another two cheeses and crackers. 25 minutes later, having finished our bottle of wine, still no show so we spoke to the waitress and cancelled. Floor manager knew about our complaint but he hid from speaking to us. When the bill came they tried to charge us a service charge. We had that taken off. Still no show from the floor manager. No apologies if from the staff. We usually go to Pairings Wine Bar, which is always great, knowledgeable staff, wide selection of food and great service. This place is the exact opposite. Our main complaint is with the floor manager who we saw speaking to the waitresses but he hid in the trenches and lacked the backbone to apologise. Won’t be back, average at best food with measly portions and a spineless manager. Absolutely rubbish.

I went here with my grandma the other week, it was so lovely! She has mobility issues and staff assisted her in walking across the restaurant when needed and everyone had beaming smiles, it was really welcoming. When we vocalised our dietary requirements staff stood at the table and listed off all the food and drink we could have and were really attentive. The only reason I marked the food down was because of the vegan options, I could only eat potatoes, bread and one of the small plates, but my grandma loved her side of the meal.

Absolutely fantastic meal with family for my dad's 75th. Staff really welcoming and friendly, they seemed really pleased to see us. The food was stunning, basically ordered all the starters/small plates plus focaccia, children had small version of the tagliatelle carbonara (amazing btw). The Anchovies, chicken thigh, steak tartare, and cod cheeks were superb. As always for dessert, while the others had doughnuts, and "strawberry mess", I had a starter: the BBQ Hipsi cabbage with anchovy sauce - Oh My Goodness! Outstanding dish. Absolutely delighted we chose this restaurant, it was fab and I really recommend it.

We hadn't realised that this place had been open for in excess of two years - clearly we are not very observant - however, having come across it recently decided to go on a Sunday lunchtime. The place was very quiet so we were able to sit in the window over looking the Minster which is clearly a lovely view and watch the world go by. The restaurant is mainly tasting dishes so we opted for a few and whilst relatively small portions everything was beautifully presented and very tasty . There are some very interesting options and the chef clearly knows what he is doing - I heard that he had come from Skosh so no surprise. Excellent choice of wines and very attentive service - all in all a nice place but at central York prices so no complaints.

We were really looking forward to visiting but were left feeling disappointed at the customer service. The vibe and the setting is great. We’d booked for 9pm, and despite advertising that they were open until 11pm, they suddenly asked for last orders at 9:30pm, and told us closing was 10pm. Upon querying this, the staff member responded by saying they always shut at 10pm. I then probed further and stated they’re advertised until 11pm and she then replied that they are closing early and “you’d booked for an hours slot so thought it was alright”. Shutting early is fine, especially if the place isn’t busy, but it was the dismissive nature of the customer service which left a bad taste. There was no advanced warning upon entry about shutting earlier than advertised. To their point, whilst a lot of bars give you an allocated slot, it’s standard for you to not be held absolutely to this, and if the place isn’t full it’s pretty normal for you to be able to extend your stay. We even saw another couple (who arrived around 9:30pm) being allowed to order a whole bottle of wine without any mention of the fact they’d be shutting soon. Largely an unfortunate experience for a place with a lot of potential!

Relaxed place with fantastic views of the nearby Minster with very good service and importantly, excellent food. This is not a "regional" restaurant, the cooking was splendid - a characterful tartare steak, satisfying bitter leaves salad, substantial lamb rump and a perfectly cooked pork chop. Wonderfully selected and presented British and Irish cheese board (enough for two) and interesting madeleines with miso, a savoury/sweet delight. As you would expect from a wine bar - pretty good selection of wines. Highly recommended.

Lovely wine bar - we were recommended to go there by the Polymath cocktail bar, which also looked great but we were in the mood for wine not cocktails. The staff were very knowledgeable and welcoming. In addition to the specials, virtually every one of their extensive wine list was available by the glass, which is very unusual. 22 Yards was extremely disappointing! Having worked in hospitality for over five years, this place was truly terrible. I have never experienced such poor service. The “large cheese board” was embarrassing, consisting of three small match box slices of cheese and no crackers. The “selection of cured meat” was also just one type of meat. The waitress was unfriendly and rude when we pointed out the white wine wasn’t chilled. When leaving we purposely said good night to the staff. Zero response as they were busy chatting and tasting the wines themselves. Honestly a terrible experience and much better wine bars around York.

I've heard they've got a new head chef around July and having eaten at places he's previously worked (name dropping Skosh) and knowing the quality of person he's worked under I've been wanting to try this place out for a while. Spoiler... It wasn't a disappointment! The menu reads well, a selection of small and not so small plates that you can order to share, or not! I love this style of cooking as you get to try more of the menu. I couldn't fault any of the dishes we tried. The potato pave was crispy, but unctuous from the duck fat, topped with a delightful black garlic puree and a hefty pile of finely grated Old Winchester (a British version of parmesan - almost). The joyous slow cooked lamb belly, a slab of deep fried breaded goodness, rich but not cloying with some blobs of chutney and sauce to cut through the richness. A classic endive, goats cheese, beetroot, dukka, and orange salad just done well. To complete, the veg tempura with a batter so thin and crispy you'd think the chef had trained in Japan. Not forgetting the brown crab rarebit, absolutely delicious, if I could just get my hands on the recipe of that one! A classic apple tatin for dessert, well executed. Lots of wine by the glass and after a couple of glasses each £141 to pay for 3 of us seemed very reasonable for a meal I couldn't fault. I I had to be mean the scallop was just good. Looking forward to next visit, just hope the dishes I didn't get to try are still on there. I wouldn't pay any attention to those one star reviews just below 👇 sound like a bunch of people who value quantity over quality. £4 for four good chunks of good quality bread is pretty average for any decent restaurant. Hats off to the chef, I wish him and the team every success!

By far one of the best establishments in York. My (now) wife and I visited for drinks a couple of times earlier this year, and found it so pleasing that we chose it to host our wedding reception last month. We were going for an intimate cocktail party vibe, with champagne flowing, good food, good music and good drinks, a brief that 22 Yards absolutely nailed. Everything was utterly perfect from start to finish. One of their staff Hannah also happens to be a very talented florist, so she decorated the venue with beautiful arrangements that matched our autumnal colour scheme. The staff were amazing; Daniele, Lottie and the rest of the team went above and beyond to take care of our guests and ensure no one ever had an empty glass. The food was everything we wanted it to be and everyone commented on how incredible it was - the phrase 'best wedding food ever' was even uttered! The chef even took on the challenge of creating steak tartare canapés as it's one of my wife's favourites. As if this wasn't enough, we also had one of the best views in York right outside (which was very handy for grabbing photo ops with our photographer during rain breaks!). We can't thank 22 Yards enough for helping us have the best wedding day possible, and making the reception everything we hoped it would be. We'll be customers for life now and I can't recommend them highly enough. (Photos attached were taken by our brilliant photographer Joe Dodsworth)

What a find! We visited on a Sunday evening and so were treated to some lovely jazz to go with our amazing food and wine. There is a huge selection of wines by the glass, something for every taste and budget. In addition to the main list, there are also a number of 'bin ends' to choose from, displayed on the walls around the place to browse through (feel free to ask them for some advice to help you choose). The food is simply devine too! There's plenty of choice from both small and larger plates to share, so we kept grazing in exploration of the menu with our extended wine flight. The duck fat potato pavé was probably our dish of the night, but we also loved the tempura tenderstem broccoli, padron peppers, parmesan gnocchi, and the mackerel. Everything was perfectly cooked and deliciously packed with flavour! The staff are just lovely. Hannah and Lottie were so friendly and knowledgeable and really made our evening. Brings to mind the phrase "arrive as guests, leave as friends". We will certainly come back anytime we're in York, and only wish it wasn't so far from home!

Looked forward to visiting here. Staff accommodated the two of us on what looked like last free table. Unfortunately that’s where the experience ended. Waited about 15 minutes so got up to order our drinks. Was told it was table service which we knew from being told on arrival though that hadn’t been apparent from lack of attention to us. Asked if one of the specials was a red wine to be told it was. 5 to 10 minutes later told it was rose and given a taster. Chose a red which had to wait a further 10 minutes for. In the meantime we got stuck to the dirty table that I had seen wiped over though the cloth must have been pretty rotten to start with. This negroamaro very dry and not great. Had the cheek to charge a greedflation 10% service charge too and didn’t ask if this was ok like we had been asked in previous establishment. Wont be returning which is a shame as it had a nice atmosphere but staff have put me off.

Knock out. You have to eat here. Food is stunning. Justin looked after us and recommended the best red wine I’ve had in a long time. Great music and atmosphere. Very highly recommend 👌👌

Lovely little wine bar, excellent selection. Was really looking forward to the cheeseboard from their online menu but they no longer do this. Made up for it though with a fantastic bigod English brie style cheese that was outstanding! Will definitely come back 😁

Lovely setting right over from the minster. Great wine selection. We were disappointed to find the cheese board on the websites menu wasn't available. These little things really should be kept up to date so customers aren't disappointed. The food we ended up ordering was however, of a very high quality. Notably the Bigod, a Suffolk cheese in the brie style.

A great addition to a thriving food and wine scene in York. 22 Yards add something a little bit more bespoke and unique - it is fast becoming my favourite spot in the city to show to friends and family.

Delightful space, good wine and well placed next to the Minster. Essentially a wine bar that serves large plates - beware these are small portions, expensive for what you get and not what you’d class as an evening meal. Maitre’D did not respond well to a complaint that one dish served was not as listed on the menu…

Lovely lovely place. We visited later, on a Sunday. We had a small selection of plates, and a couple of glasses of wine each. We asked to moved to another table, as there were two women next to us who behaved exactly like Edi and Patsy from AbFab. Very loud and raucous. This was no problem for the staff who very good. The live music added a nice touch. The food was top quality and wine just as good. Would definitely recommend.

An extensive wine list, including two rather splendid orange wines (English and an Australian). Staff are very good, attentive in that perfectly lovely invisible way, no fuss but lots of consideration. Food generally good, a small issue with the steak but we’ll see if that improves next time… a real potential five star experience.

Friendly, non-pretentious place with great wines and platters. Lovely staff and on Sunday nights, mellow jazz from the Jazzville Duo which added to the great ambience. Welcoming place in the shadow of York Minster. Highly recommend.

What a delightful time we had at 22 yards. We weren't too excited by the food menu and decided to go for a sharing plate of meats and cheeses with taramasalata to start. My wife doesn't particularly like taramasalata but loved this, as did I. Each element of the sharing platter was delicious. The bottle of wine that we chose also exceeded our expectations. We finished with the custard tart which was nice but not outstanding. We had a long and entertaining chat with Richard, one of the owners, and it was one of our most memorable meals out in York.

Lovely bar and the staff were wonderful. We hadn't booked anywhere for lunch and it was a small family reunion (five of us) but thankfully 22 Yards had space. Drinks were good, prices fair, and the loaded hot dogs were absolutely fantastic. I would definitely go again. Thank you for such a lovely time.

Such a lovely place. Great, knowledgeable but friendly staff (don’t worry if you’re not a wine buff!). Fantastic small plates / sharers - delicious cheese, amazing tempura veg, fantastic hummus- it’s great for vegetarians and non. Am keen to try one of their more substantial meals, based on what I have tried it will be delicious! A lovely spot for drinks, food, and catching up. It has a vibe but isn’t noisy, so somewhere you can talk to one another :)

Saw this place while walking around York. Popped in around 5ish and got a table for a drink and nibbles. I really enjoyed the place, service, food and drinks. Although not the cheapest place I want to return. And the olives were so nice.

What a great find ! If I could give it 10 stars I would . If you're in York and near the Cathedral go find this little gem of a place. The food is amazing, I had the special and it was sublime. We shall definitely be going back, infact we're booked in for their new Sunday lunch this weekend 😋

I love having a glass of wine or 2 in here. The staff are really pleasant, and the menu throughout is just enough. This is not a slur on 22, but don't sit near the door in winter. It can get chilly, especially when people don't shut it properly behind themselves. Fab for people watching if you sit by the window...

This is an upmarket fancy restaurant that's so close to being excellent. It's still very good and worth visiting for the fish tacos alone. I've been twice and there been three things that have disappointed on both occasions preventing it from being excellent and up there with the very best . 1 the butter isn't served at a spreadable temperature. 2 the table has been wobbly. Both times the staff have fixed it when asked but it's annoying to ask as the tables are quite tight it's awkward. 3. They've got this stupid wicker table in the entrance with a flared base that sticks out more at the ground level that the top and I've nearly tripped over it both times. I would pay good money to put that ghastly thing on a bonfire. It's a very good restaurant that with a few tiny tweaks would feel more worth the price.

This restaurant is a little gem serving a limited, but wide ranging, menu which ought to satisfy everyone. The food is, without exception, interesting, innovative and very well cooked or, in the case of deserts, very well prepared and put together. The two dining rooms, while not glamorous, are cosy and comfortable. You don't come to this place to show off, rather you come here because the food is superb. Service is brilliant too. Very friendly and helpful staff and no rushing. 2 minutes from the Minster, 10 minutes from the station, and backing onto the city walls, this place is easy to find and very accessible. I really can't recommend No 8 Bistro highly enough

Service was quick and staff pleasant. They did not come to ask if we were OK and did not offer any grated cheese for the very dry cannelloni.
