Pear Tree Inn in Norwich

Had the most awful experience when dealing with the ‘landlord’ he was clearly plying certain girls with free drinks. My girlfriend ended up sitting next to these girls after being reassured that that seat was not taken and that the landlord was really friendly. The ‘landlord’ in question walked over and sat in my girl lap and was clearly very drunk and was clearly taking advantage of these girls, they’d told us they hadn’t payed for a drink all night. On our way out we spoke to a member of staff and asked them about the landlord and they apologise profusely about his conduct and that they didn’t know what do do themselves as he was their boss because he’d done it to several customers beforehand. Awful experience, would never return

To insinuate that we "twisted" words said or actions done on that night is reductive of the entire situation, we have nothing to gain from lying about this, we were frequent patrons of the pub and we just wanted to share our experiences to inform other people who may think of visiting. Our group did not verbally abuse you, we were in the pub for a short period of time, and when refused a reason for not serving our friend, we left. No slurs were said. You have every right to refuse service, yes, but we have every right to question why, especially when another friend with the exact same type of ID was told that he could be served. Us speaking out about our experience is not "ridiculous", after walking out of the pub, he was incredibly upset, not only for himself but he told us "What if that happens to someone else too?". That was the sole reason for our reviews. What we said happened, happened. There's no doubt or error. We're incredibly sorry about the abuse you have to endure from other people, I can't imagine the burden that must put on your shoulders and your family, I do not envy you. We just wanted an apology, much the same as you would if this situation happened to you, not to be called liars. We wish Nick, Lesley and the kids all the best. We hope you can reflect and learn from this. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Went out for valentines drinks and the manager (who was obviously hammered) refused to serve my friend who had a valid ID, he wouldn’t give us a valid reason other than “You need to leave”, another friend of a similar nationality went up to him to ask about what the problem was and got the response “You’re not from here”. Obvious racism, disgusting, dismissive, and he staff genuinely seemed scared to stand up to him. Used to be my local but I won’t be funding the establishment anymore due to this disgusting behaviour. Have anecdotes from ex-staff talking about how horrible he was to work for, didn’t see it in person until now.

I visited this pub with a friend who, despite having a perfectly valid ID, was blatantly refused service. The owner’s behavior was not just dismissive—it was a clear case of racist discrimination, driven solely by my friend’s nationality. I’m outraged by this blatant disregard for basic decency and equality. If you value respect and fairness, steer clear of this establishment.

Cosy pub with some decent beers

Just like a pub should be. Friendly, warm, and with good beer. Fully recommended to locals ane visitors alikec, and open late seven days a week.

Really nice and cosy pub with good outdoor seating. Nice choice of draught beer/ale. Everyone who works there is really nice. Only downside is it’s a bit more on the pricey side and I always struggle to get a place to sit - sometimes it’s a bit too popular for its own good. Not much they can do about that though

End up paying for doubles but get less as they don't want to get a new bottle... Plus they seem happy enough to lie to your face even though you've just witnessed it. 🤷

A great example of this pub’s excellent hospitality was back in December of 2020, when lockdown rules decreed that you could only order a drink if it came together with a ‘substantial meal’. Of all the Norwich pubs a mate and I visited one evening, to find out their take on a ‘substantial meal’, nowhere had put in as much effort with their food offering (nor priced it as reasonably) as the Pear Tree. A big pot of delicious stew was bubbling away, complete with dumplings! I have been in many times since, with every visit reminding me of what a lovely pub this is.

Honestly, this place has immaculate vibes and the bar staff were lovely!

Great pub. Surprisingly quiet for a Saturday night. Really good feel to the place. Loved it. We'll be back for sure.

Drank our drink and left. Kitchen closed except for bar snacks. Jack Russell Dog was welcome though after about 15 mins of sitting quietly was told he wasn't allowed on the shabby couch, where he was asleep on my wife's knee. Suddenly, it felt like we should leave.

Fabulous food, fabulous owner and great atmosphere! Went the first time as our son was playing footie in Norwich, kids were desperate to go back for the burgers, so the next time we were in Norwich we went back! Owner is very personable and all had a great time! Highly recommended! Can’t wait to visit again!

Greaaaat pub, feels like a country pub with live music and other events, theres and a nice fireplace, really nice owners and staff are always cool. Lived next to it for 2+ years and i never got bored.

Just what we were looking for! We were staying across the road for a few days and wandered over for a drink after dinner. The owners Lesley and Nick were so welcoming! The pub is cozy w a fire in the hearth. It feels like a real place, family owned & run. We liked it so well we returned the next 2 nights! Be aware that Monday nights there’s a cocktail special that attracts students, so the vibe is a little different. The other nights there was a mix of ages but on Monday it was mostly young people. The food was also very good! Would recommend!

Went for a pub crawl down unthank Road last night and this was the best. We had drinks, played boardgames and all had food. The food was really nice I had the brie toastie. The service we received was really good especially from Lesley. Will definitely go again

Went with some friends and got told to be quiet when all we was doing was talking and laughing just having a nice night so would not go there if you like to talk or laugh

Absolutely love coming here. Great choice of drinks, great atmosphere. The staff are lovely as are the owners. The pub is dog friendly too which is really nice. Lovely to sit by the fireplace they have on during the winter months, and put on fantastic events all year round. Love having this as my local!

Just a quick note to say thank for a great night last Friday. Thoroughly enjoyed the 80s theme night and hope you raised some money for Cancer Research. Great stuff. I noted the review from Myles Chrips saying the Pear Tree was a very good pub, ie I’m guessing, well run, good staff and pleasant atmosphere, but only gave one star because the owners we’re having a drink and not running the pub? This seem to me that Myles is being a little oxymoronic as you’ve already noted the pub was very good. The staff are excellent and know their jobs. Being a landlord who has lived and worked in a pub it can feel like a 24/7 affair, but even landlords need a day or two off (outrageous) and like yourself Myles and many people they sometimes unwind in a pub. Just happens it’s their own. Not just this, but being a small family business it’s good business sense sharing a little bonhomie and largesse with your locals and good customers. Maybe one star for, as you say, a very good pub is a little amiss. I must say I admire your surname. It’s very rare (I’m a bit of a historian) and shares an acronym with The Centre for Human Rights and Policy Studies in Kenya. (I did a spell in Africa). Keep up the good work Pear Tree!

Bit small for a pub if you ask me, take arrangement could do with some adjustment. The service was average, a few fire risks with candles on the table with no proper holders, our table got knocked and the candle fell nearly on me but I caught it and hot wax dripped on my hand. Selection of alcohol is standard. I only had 1 pint and left.

Came out on a day trip with my best friend and had food at The Pear Tree. The staff were super friendly and the chef, Scott, was very approachable at the carvery deck!

Lesley was an amazing landlady, helped us retrieve an ID from under the decking, was working at it for over an hour. Drinks are great at amazing prices and offer student discount. Would highly recommend!

The owner Lesley was so helpful and amazing. Spent an hour trying to retrieve my friend’s ID card and successfully got it. Mad skills. The drinks are good quality and there is a student discount. The atmosphere is amazing and I would recommend to anyone in Norwich.

Absolute gem of a pub,great location although a bit understaffed I think the poor lady looked like she was serving on her own bless her but she was doing magnificently,atmosphere was also great,lovely seating outside to watch the world go by.

Good local pub under great management. sometimes it does get filled to the brim with dirty grotty students, however, in the less busy times, it is such a charming pub with brilliant interior design and the odd events that the owners put on now and again.

Lovely place with plenty of cosy indoor seating and outdoors too. In all honesty, bar service and time for any acknowledgement from staff behind the bar seems a little lengthy, but made up for by friendliness and also regular table service.

This is the best pub in Norwich by far. The pub itself is beautiful looking with some amazing decorations and vibe throughout, with a cozy fireplace and brilliant atmosphere. The pub also offers students a discount which I always feel is really helpful for me when drinking out with friends. They have a great selection of on tap beers and ciders, also offering some amazing wines, spirits / shots. The prices are a bit steep, but I don’t mind paying that in such a nice place. There is always dogs running around the place which always adds to the vibe of the pub making all customers happy. Would highly recommend!

Outside seats and tables are falling apart and a danger. Staff whilst mainly pleasant don’t have a clue about the food they are selling. Didn’t know what a vat receipt was or a shamrock!! Fish and chips was way over fried and difficult to stomach served with salad not peas , the salad consisted of 4 pieces of lettuce. Salt was served in a paper ramekin. When the waitress came to remove what I’d left I told her to tell the chef they should be embarrassed to send food like that out of their kitchen. No response no apology.

Very disappointed....... all burgers sold out on arrival. Pulled beef Guinness so poor. Wine good. Won't be back!

Wow what an evening , booked a meal at a restaurant which let us down. So we said get a chinese and take back to the appartment. Popped in the pear tree inn before getting chinese. After a few drinks we were asked you two look smart are you off to the theatre ?.No I said it is our wedding anniversary and we were going out for a meal but the restaurant has let us down ,so we popped in for a couple of drinks and we will get a chinese and take back to our appartment. WHAT!! said the landlord I see what I can do. About 10 mins later a bottle of Champagne on Ice turned up on the bar Happy anniversary from us all they said . My wife is chinese what would you like off the menu on the house. No your ok thanks I replied ,No we insist. So the landlady made us a meal for free . Pop corn chicken with chips and bang bang sweet chille sauce, Hat Yai Chicken garnish with corriander Rice. Pork Belly Stir fry whith green beans chille and rice. Plus drinks all night . Thank you Leslie & Nick for your hospitality it was a fantastic jester to 2 strangers to your pub , you made one lady very happy saving the day .And we left as friends what a couple thank you again.❤❤❤❤

Thing is, we stayed all night because the place has the perfect atmosphere. Super friendly and really well run pub. A good mix of locals and UEA students. Reasonably priced beer. Fast service, the guy on the guitar was decent. It was packed on a miserable Tuesday night. Yes it's that good.

I always love coming into this warm and friendly pub. Lesley accommodates for everyone and is such a hostess it’s unreal! She picks her staff so well as I’ve never felt unwelcome or in the way. I’d recommend this place to any person of any age! The open mics are good and the menu is delicious!

Lovely pub & lovely staff, but don't buy the food! I paid £10 for 'loaded fries' which were literally just a small portion of fries with BBQ sauce and liquid cheese squirted on top- what an absolute rip-off!!

03.09.2022 Came on a whim. Pub was very clean and kitsch. Menu was reasonably priced and decent sized portions. Would visit again. £4 minimum spend on the card. £1.90 for a coke. Friendly and well-behaved husky in-situ.

We had a fantastic evening there last night, we arrived without booking and the friendly staff accommodated our large group. The food is fab with lots of different choices on the Menu. Thanks for making my friends wedding evening special.

Really lovely staff - we came after our friends married and they were just fab. We were a big group but they did their absolute best to sort us out with food and drinks. They also have a stunning huski called Norway which was a great bonus!

So after going for a few drinks with my friend along unthank road we went to the pear tree sat at a table ( just by the toilets) drinking a half and chatting to my friend when I felt an almighty bang on my head !! It was a jack daniels bottle which had a candle in , these are around the pub ! This fell of a shelf and cracked me on the head a man assuming the manager who was at the bar got up and picked it up and went to put it back so my friend said don’t put it up there , whilst I’m holding my head hoping it didn’t spilt my head open NOT one SoRRY from a single member of staff in fact I got spoke about at the bar because my friend dared to tell them not to put it back on the shelf ! This is very rude of the manager and I’m trying to find out the brewery to report this ! Because the manager was to busy at the bar drinking the staff congregate behind the bar or sit the other side of the bar ! This is not gd practice for any pub I shall NOT return

Lovely atmosphere although food wasn't being served when we visited, however, it was late Sunday afternoon.

The old Lillie Langtry now a student / teacher bar city end of the golden triangle. Well frequented with the limited indoor space and most of the extended outdoor seating full most fair weather days. Not a grand choice of beers due to the very small bar. No pool any more but no room for it anymore. Much more civilised than in the past and still a landmark of Norwich.

Rude staff selling over priced drinks in warm glasses and handing you the wrong change, will not be returning.

Absolutely beautiful find - so many people and very good atmosphere. This place is genuinely loved and it really shows. Still true 6 months later!

I really like this place. The owner, Norway the dog, the interior etc is fab. They make a big effort across lots of parts of the business. Recently, though there’s been some really dodgy staff and (15 bloke strong) uni bar crawls crashing in. I went in for a quiet pint and the barman was licking his fingers (in a gross not really aware how gross it is way) and didn’t know about a basic question to do with their beer. He was young, no problem. But just because you’re young it doesn’t mean you can just assume everyone is ok with a bit rough around the edges. It’s tricky when you like a place so much, but it’s not enough to keep me coming every time.
