Very easy to miss this cafe, tucked away in a lay-by just past the rugby club. Varied menu but you can not better the breakfast, freshly cooked to order, exactly as you want it. Rachel the owner is friendly, helpful and makes you very welcome and appreciates your custom.

A great café is as important a pilgrimage site as a cathedral, a world-class museum, an ancient ruin or a modern architectural marvel. Some have licences to serve booze, some will be known locally as bars, many do food – but these iconic cafés put their niché and a chat-conducive vibe at the centre of their operations. Paxcroft cafe is no different, as Wiltshire best (in my honest opinion) breakfast, the glitz and glamour is heavily disguised behind the faced of a roadside truck stop yet the soul and personality that eminates from the staff is both familiar and heartfelt inviting you to engorge the biggest of emotional comforts, a True English breakfast. The breakfasts here make u pine for the sanctuary of Monday opening hours to heal and recover from a heavy weekend or just to start off your week with a protective dousing of those Monday morning blues. If you haven't yet visited I implore you to take that chance as the best memories are made only when you take that first step.

I will place my cards on the table and say that I use this cafe every week and sometimes several times a week. That, in itself, should say something about the reliable quality of everything that Rachel serves here. I usually have a breakfast when I visit most Tuesdays but to day, Thursday 26 October, I called in between appointments and had a bacon and sausage bap. Whatever you order from a gut busting breakfast to a simple sandwich and everything in-between Rachel cooks it when you order. The result is that, even in this commercial establishment, things taste like you just cooked them in your kitchen at home. Piping hot in a "fresh this morning" soft bap couldn't be bettered anywhere. And the price, well I couldn't do it at home for less. And all with the minimum of wait. A soft flour topped bap with 2 sausages bacon and a cup of tea £3:60. I think that anyone who drives past this cafe in the lay-by and doesn't go in needs professional help. Well done Rachel. May you go from strength to strength. In an age of designer half hot, half plate full meals you stand totally alone. Thank you.

Great food, great prices, great banter. I had the Big Plate all-day breakfast, a meal so generously portioned that I didn't finish all my bread (and I rarely leave anything unfinished). The food was tasty and well-cooked and the owner's witty repartee kept us amused. Looking forward to going again.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I started to use Paxcroft Cafe a few years ago. It was an amazing place to get breakfast, or indeed any meal, and my weekly visit has seen this truly great place to eat just get better and better. I have never had a better breakfast even in some 5 star hotels I've visited around the world. This cafe has had many well deserved awards for food hygiene and food quality and variety by independent organisations. These aren't just handed out, they have to be earned and Rachel has certainly earned every one. When you find the best it's a waste of time trying the rest and Paxcroft is by far the best. Everything is perfectly cooked to order and your personal liking. I like really runny eggs and bacon that is just cooked but not overdone. Every single time my breakfast comes cooked to perfection. Although the cost is less than you will pay at most places, the bacon is the thickest cut that you will find anywhere and the sausages and similarly delicious. Rachel will do pretty well anything you choose just as you like it. When the breakfast is served it is really difficult to remember that this is a lay bye cafe with no mains gas or water. Everything is shipped in daily. There isn't a purpose built restaurant anywhere that can better what Rachel manages to deliver day in day out with no drop in standards. Add this to the uplifting banter, which I will admit may be misunderstood by non regulars and mistaken for "offence", but is quit innocent, and you have a perfect place to drop into and unwind over a truly unequalled meal. Anything less than 5 star rating is quite simply wrong. There will always be people, who, for whatever reason, will find fault. This cafe makes that impossible in my opinion and after hundreds of regular visits. So next time you are passing the Paxcroft lay-bye, don't pass, drop in, you will not be disappointed. But make sure you are hungry so that you do justice to what Rachel will serve you!!! By its very design there are steps up to the door but that should not put of wheelchair users as the sort of clients that use Rachel's cafe will certainly be willing to assist wheelchair users. Well done Rachel and your merry team of equally gifted helpers. Long may you continue to go from strength to strength. Today, being Tuesday, I will be in for my usual. I can't wait. Many thanks dear lady.

When driving home from a longgg journey, as per usual, my younger brother kept whining because he was hungry! The first thing we came across was Paxcroft Cafe and we were very skeptical because of the typical 'greasy spoon' stereotype but I kid you not, I've never been so thankful to my brother for being hungry! The food was AMAZING! Perfect portion sizes and Rachel makes sure your food matches your picky needs and wants. Never felt so welcome, really proves not to judge a book by its cover! Stopped in with a work colleague on our way down to Exeter for a meeting, as we had a long drive ahead, so we fancied a hearty breakfast to set us up for the day. I have eaten here before and found it to be very nice, however my 2nd visit was not so enjoyable. The food wasn't bad and the portion sizes were good and didn't let things down in that area. The bacon was cooked to perfection I have to say and I am quite particular about my bacon, however what really spoilt it was the lady cooking smelt extremely strongly of cigarettes and had possbily just been out for a smoke and the smell was very off putting and it could be smelt when we ordered our food and also when it was brought over, it left a lingering smell.

Based on the portion sizes, the value is pretty good and the quality of the ingredients are as you would expect from a roadside greasy spoon.

Been here for breakfast in the past and it used to be pretty good. Went recently and it was a little disappointing if I'm honest. Watery beans, overcooked bacon and small portions compared to previous visits. Constructively mentioned my comments to the lady when asked how it was and was looked at with daggers. It was followed up by the words that I'm the first person to complain. Won't be going back anytime soon.

My son recently stayed here (pre-booked by the people he was visiting for an interview). He hasn’t got an account with Tripadvisor but insisted I give feedback on his behalf because he was so impressed. The staff were excellent and hospitable and the hotel was lovely. The staff were so kind and drove him to and from the train station. The whole experience certainly calmed his nerves; the Garden House will be fondly remembered and he has promised to recommend you to anyone looking to stay down that neck of the woods. Thank you from Frazer and the wider Cresswell clan.
