Great food and the best atmosphere! The Brazilian culture is very beautifully reflected in the decor of the place, making it a very cozy restaurant to eat with family and friends! If you want a taste of authentic Brazilian cuisine, this is the best place you'll find in England! Ps: the owner is a very lovely and friendly Brazilian lady who will make sure you have the best experience!

On a wander round haunts of long ago, was disappointed with the Pheasant, which had run out of Guinness, charm, and, it seemed, hope. But no sooner had I left to plod sadly back into town than I came by this small cafe. Decided to revive my spirits with a coffee. Inside was greeted by the proprietress, a most welcoming, smart, erudite Brazilian. A Brazilian coffee shop on Mount Pleasant, Reading! Wonders will never cease. Of course, being Brazilian, Pau Brasil sold wonderful cakes. I asked about them, and the lady described the displayed delights enticingly. I couldn’t resist and took a seat outside on one of the two tables. Well, my cake was terrific–think it was called Ladrez or something–a sponge with chocolate chequers round the edges. Coffee excellent too. Pau Brasil had triggered a moment of Zen. The lady chatted to me out front and, when I asked, explained why the shop is called Pau Brasil, which involved a fascinating slice of cultural history. At the end, she said, “Thank you for being interested”. Que senhora maravilhosa! She and Pau Brasil made my day.

This little gem is a little out the town centre but well worth the visit. I have taken many friends over the last few years coming from different backgrounds, countries and ethnicities and everyone has enjoyed the food. The lady who runs it i believe is called Evie is a lovely charming woman who makes everyone feel welcome straight away and takes time to speak to all her customers. The food for me is exceptional there are a few dishes witch have an acquired taste but i have enjoy every one i have tried so far My only complaint is it shuts fairly early so you would need an early dinner and you couldn't go there after work but if you are free during the day give this place a try

First visit for a couple of years to an old favourite. Despite the genial owner apologising for possible slowness due to cost of living pressures (use it or lose it!) we were served as efficiently as ever. The feijoada (Brazil’s national dish) was to die for, as ever; rissoles and other unusual sides were great too. Also a wide selection of amazing cakes and regional ingredients. Still a hidden gem in a quiet corner of Reading, but if you haven’t been, you’re missing out on a real treat.

10/10 - Delicious! I am not kidding when I say this is the best meal I’ve had in weeks - if not months! The bacalao fritters and the chicken Frango a Milanesa were perfectly cooked. Portion size is generous for mains. Had flan for dessert - my only pointer would be that this portion seemed a bit too small. 10/10 recommend you all to go

Popular with both Brazilian and Portuguese people living in Reading, this is a little gem of a find and quite not where you'd be expecting to find such a place. Downstairs is the kitchen plus a Brazilian shop selling lots of imported fare from there and Portugal and upstairs are four or five tables for snackers and lunchers...and if the weather is fine, a few seats outside on the pavement too. The menu is not huge, but quite varied and you'll be sure to find something you like. I started lunch with a Bolinha de Queijo (a cheesball with very hot sauce) and followed this with a mixed plate of Feijoada and Vaca Atolada (black beans with stewed pork, rice, greens and some shredded beef with cassava) and a 660cl bottle of Antartica Brazilian beer, ice-cold and served like they do in Brazil - in an insulated bottle container! I finished with a slice of almond tart and an expresso. Very slightly pricey for a cafe, but the food is good and service is warm and welcoming, attentive and very helpful. Yes, I'll be paying them another visit.

It is by far the best restaurant in Reading! I have been several times as I used to live in Reading and I still go every time I visit the city, because it is in my opinion the best choice. The quality of food is outstanding and you can really feel the authentic taste of Brasil through their traditional home-made dishes. I definitively recommend the Fejoada and the freshly prepared fruit juices, but I have to say that all the dishes I had were always beyond my satisfaction: incredibly tasty! Also, you cannot leave Pau Brasil without having an espresso (the unique coffee I have ever liked in Reading) with a Brigadero (a delicious chocolate small ball which melts in your mouth). The staff is very kind, always helpful and friendly. Since the first time, I was there I felt like at home. The atmosphere is cosy and familiar with relaxing brazilian and portuguese music. The owner is not only an excellent chef but also a fantastic host, always offering everybody the warmest welcome! In Pau Brasil, you can also buy some genuine brazilian and portuguese products so to bring with you at home a piece of your wonderful experience there.Pau Brasil is a must in Reading! This is a small cafe rather than a restaurant and the lunch options are limited, but it's independent and the food is homemade. There are either toasted sandwiches on the menu, or a couple of specials on the blackboard. There were three vegetarian choices in total; a toasted cheese sandwich, a dish with beans or soup. This is fair enough given the size of the overall menu. Reasoning that I could have the sandwich anywhere and not wanting to spend £10 on the beans and rice dish, I opted for the soup which was £3.99. It turned out to be a good choice - really tasty - though I had to ask a couple of times for bread with it. My friend ordered the authentic sounding 'platter' in order to try a few different things. This was okay, but the presentation as a bowl of deep fried 'stuff' wasn't great. Laid out on a plate with a bit of garnish, it would have looked a lot better. I spotted the separate juice menu after I'd already ordered a coke from the main menu, a shame as these look exciting and worth trying. The spicy chilli oil that came with our food was excellent. Staff were friendly and the upstairs seating area was lovely, light and spacious. The cakes we had were amazing and although I don't think I'd return for lunch, I would definitely go back here to meet friends for tea and cake. The shop area downstairs is interesting, the atmosphere is good and it's a sweet little place where you could convince yourself that you were on holiday.

If you haven't already, make sure you pay a visit to not only experience all of the wonderful things on offer, but also to support a local independent business.

Went here several times with a varying number of friends and always come back. Above a deli is a very lovely little coffee that inspires with Brazilian atmosphere and serves good coffee an fantastic cake (ie the coconut one). Staff is also friendly and always up for a joke. Just parking a little tricky sometimes if you come by car ...

we had some lovely food and the experience was really nice. The lady that runs it is most welcoming and gave us plenty of information to help us choose. We'll definitely come again, such a nice place!!

Visited in March on a Wednesday lunchtime after reading good reviews on TA. Nice friendly service, very quiet but nice ambiance all the same with traditional music playing, and displays on the walls. We had a selection of starters (deep fried pasties) that were very processed and served with a hot chilli sauce. The main course was off the specials board (inc. refried beans, rice & diced Chorizo). All the food was just OK. We much prefer Las Iguanas in town. The egg custard tarts though, we agree with other reviewers are excellent.

If you are not too keen on the paraphernalia and would like to focus more on the quality of food, this is a place you should visit. The menu changes daily, based on whatever is being prepared for the day. This is another indication of the food being cooked freshly which is a big plus when you are eating out with children. The restaurant serves Brazilian and Portuguese food and you can really work up your appetite after the climb upto the restaurant. The hostess was kind enough to explain the menu and the ingredients. The beans and black pudding served with rice was rich in flavours and was cooked to perfection. Do not miss the freshly prepared fruit juice. There is a decently priced grocery shop downstairs which stocks Brazilian and Portuegese wines - worth a try. The seating accommodates only 16 guests, so booking ahead of visit is a must.

Restaurante aconchegante que por fora lembra as casinhas de Parati, no Rio de Janeiro. A decoração, a música, a comida caseira e o ótimo atendimento em português me fizeram me sentir em casa. Também tem uma venda de produtos brasileiros e portugueses no primeiro andar. Maravilhoso!

Tried coffee and some savouries for a late breakfast when staying room-only at a nearby hotel having read the good reviews. Friendly, low-key cafe/shop offering a pleasant alternative to 'chain' coffee shops and a variety of unusual tasty snacks to try. Will visit again.

We often drop in for some pasteis de nata, also tasty chicken coxinhas or bolinhos de bacalhau. We always have a friendly welcome and a good chat while we stock up on our Brazilian and Portuguese essentials. We also like the Pilao coffee, and sometimes have a warm snack straight from the oven, perhaps with one of the wide selection of fruit juices, or Guarana.

I go here regularly for all sorts of foods but especially the custard tart that is so traditional :) followed by coffee and maybe some form of acai smoothie. You can also buy food to take away and cook at home. I love it there and the staff are lovely along with the hard working smiley owner :) big thumbs up!

Fantastic service! We were looking forward to coming here after reading all the positive comments, however food was terrible, definitely Not everything was homemade, the stuffed squid that I had for lunch they sell downstairs I noticed later in the freezer and the meat (beef dish) was tough. The homemade desserts were tasty though.

It was a rainy day in Reading but we didn't notice. We were in a Brazilian kitchen eating the most delicious rice, beans stewed and stewed meats followed by delicious hot custard tarts, cinnamon cake and the best coffee I have had a long time! Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. If you like home cooked authentic food then you cannot go wrong at Pau Brasil! We are definitely going again - hopefully soon.

The staff are so beautiful and friendly and really cannot do enough to make you feel welcome and at home. The food is great, the Feijoada is incredible. :) The prices are very reasonable. They have lots of Brazilian products on sale, snacks, meats, home-made things. It's a bit out of town, but well worth a visit. :)

Visited Pau Brasil for lunch today with my partner and two friends and the experience really was wonderful. Never had Brazilian cuisine before, wondered what the choices would be.The food was sublime from the tapas-style fritters to Lulas Recheadas (squid stuffed with chorizo), Feijoada (black-bean stew with pork & rice) and Quorn vegetarian stew with angu (polenta). Desert was coconut cake in syrup and pasteis de nata (egg custard).Service from the owner was charming, patient and helpful as she explained all the dishes. This place will become a new friend for me. Brilliant service, food and taste. Heaven!

Thanks to tripadvisor, my wife and I went to this unpretentious little restaurant for a birthday lunch after a bit of shopping in Reading. The delightful owner, Evie, and her assistant Susannah looked after us superbly and were very happy to explain all the items in their authentic Portuguese/Brazilian menu. We enjoyed all the main dishes followed by truly scrumptious speciality cakes and perfect Brazilian espresso.Don't expect sumptuous surroundings, but enjoy the pleasure of Evie's and Susannah's attention, delicious food, authentic Brazilian cocktails & beer, Portuguese wine, lovely samba and Portuguese music and a very reasonable bill!Well done, Pau Brasil. We'll drop in next time we're in Reading.PS. There's 2-hour free parking just round the block on Highgrove Street. That's a real bonus!

20241108: This was my first time trying Polish Street Food, and ‘My Warsaw’ served up such a delicious treat, insh'Allah I'll be back for more. The ‘Classic Zapiekanka’ was a tasty, slowly enjoyable munch over fifteen minutes, as it was huge – and I needed to let the melted cheese over sliced mushrooms, cool down a tad. Meanwhile the ‘Pierogi Ruskie’ was quickly and gratefully dispatched, reminding me of tales my mother told me of this dish (enjoyed in her childhood), and my own delight in similarly shaped Momos, enjoyed in Bhutan and Nepal – although neither of these South Asian delights offered the perfection of a Soured Cream dipping sauce. That both dishes came with a sprinkling of Crunchy Fried Onion, and joyful service, took my enjoyment to whole other level. Do yourself a flavour (that's not a typo), and try this excellent, economical dining surprise, right in the heart of Reading – highly recommended!

We had heard of this new Romanian restaurant in Reading and took our chance. It was a delight. The place has recently moved to be able to offer seating as well as take-away and deliveries. The small six-table dining area is tastefully decorated and the staff just wonderful. And the best part? The food is almost entirely home-made and genuinely Romanian. The prices are very reasonable, so this is good value for money. This was a loverly discovery, and we will be back.
