visited here as my mother in law said the food was very good. Well the food was acceptable but that’s as far as it goes. 1. The staff are all dressed in scruffy washed out black sweat shirts , jeans and shirts or blouses that hadn’t been ironed or just didn’t fit. 2. One waitress decided that her chin needed to be protected more than the customers as we constantly watched her tuck it under her chin when talking to customers. 3. We were placed in the corridor without any windows and directly opposite the kitchen and toilet doors where the staff congregated and talked so loudly we couldn’t hear our own conversation. 4. The wine was served in cheap crappy pub glasses which you find at a boot fair. 5. There is attentive and bloody annoying. We were asked 9 times by different staff if our meal was ok ??? They clearly don’t work as a team and it’s a free for all because 3 different members of staff tried to take our dessert order ‍️ 6. We ordered Auction House Chardonnay and were served something else . When I questioned it I was told they had rebranded it ???? This could be such a nice place if they decorated it properly and not like it had just had a 60 minute make over. Smarten the staff up and train them on the content of the menu. Give each waiter/waitress their own tables so that the customers feel like you care and not just passing by the table and casually ask if everything is ok on their way to the kitchen. The whole experience felt rushed , from the moment we arrived to when we left the total time spent was 1 hour 15 mins , it felt more like a conveyor belt meal than a Saturday night out. Would we go back , absolutely NOT !! And my mother in law was going to take her friend for lunch on Wednesday, not now !! Go to Tripadvisor | Privacy Policy | Contact Us

We went for Sunday lunch for our son's 18th birthday. It was a beautiful day so we sat outside on the patio area overlooking the lovely gardens. The service was excellent even though we were outside. There were a few of us and everyone had the 2 courses option. We all had a great meal and dessert it couldn't have been any better. Lovely afternoon.

A disappointing Sunday lunch and not for the first time recently. The establishment over the past few years has been living on a hard earned reputation. This is being spoilt by trying to host too many people, with seemingly less and inexperienced staff. Managerial presence and hospitality has long since declined. Booking requests for seating location has been ignored on our last two visits. Furthermore roast meats have, by the agreement of those at the table, become very poor. A great shame; if a few more patrons spoke out in these forums then perhaps the management might wake up. Serve a few less people but do it properly.

We sat in the bar, with a lovely view over the gardens & decided to have the set lunch as it was such good value and we were thrilled with our starters - hubby waxed lyrical over his seafood risotto and I really enjoyed my very tasty spiced cous cous arancini. However our main courses disappointed. Hubby's Slow Cooked Beef Featherblade was tough & tasteless and my Pan Fried Red Snapper was overcooked and tasted poached not pan fried at all. Such a shame.

We were a party of 11 on a Wednesday evening which extremely busy and needed more staff to be fair, the staff there worked their socks off...but we had to keep asking passing staff for more drinks. Not enough attention was given to tables due to them being very busy due to a weekly Rotary Club dinner we were told when we commented it was very busy. However, having said that the portion size of meals and value for money was fantastic. Bottles of wines purchased were only £15 which is a lot less than other restaurants charge. There were some let downs with some of the meals but overall it was VERY GOOD! Lovely friendly staff and sumptuous surroundings made our Parents' Golden Wedding celebrations memorable and very enjoyable.

Booked Parkers as we were staying for one night in the Sweeney Hall, so just expected a passable hotel restaurant. However, it was a very pleasant, welcoming quality experience that absolutely made our stay. Professionally cooked and presented produce made this a memorable meal. Great portions, very reasonable prices and all delivered with prompt, friendly service. This restaurant is a real local treasure.

Have eaten at the Sweeney on many occasions as a couple, with friends and family and with business colleagues and it never fails to tick every box. Not an easy feat when sometimes Sean and his excellent staff have a wedding in one room a full restaurant in another and people eating in the bar. This time it was with my family in the bar. I won't bore you with our choices just say that although we all had different things everything across the board was EXCELLENT. Steaks sourced locally were juicy and tender - homemade puddings were mouth-wateringly delicious - make sure you leave room for a pud! Not an easy task as portions are good. Service was superb - Kristian - one of Sean's children is the Front of house manager - he's one to watch a charming young man. All in all a wonderful time was had by all and we left with full tummies and a wallet that hadn't suffered any pain! 10 Stars for Sean his Son and his stafg

My wife and I sampled a lunch. The soup of the day (locally produced vegetable) was absolutely top notch - slightly spicy. My wife had mushroom bruschetta - loads of mushroom ! The main course of Thai red curried breast of chicken with Jasmine rice and a dish of vegetables was both filling and very enjoyable. Highly recommended

Having been to this beautiful restaurant a few times before, I have to say that yesterday's meal was brilliant. The building itself is wonderful, the staff are always helpful and cheerful and the food was amazing. As I was a guest in a large party of people, I had the 3 course menu. The apple and cinnamon crumble cheese cake was to die for! Can honestly say that was the best ever cheescake I have had - and I have had lots of cheesecake in lots of different places over the years. You never feel rushed at this restaurant either. Thank you Sweeney Hall.

Having never visited The Sweeney, but hearing great things we decided to give it a go for the first time. The location and building were beautiful and gave me hope for a delicious meal. The service up until our meal arrived was exactly what I would of expected but when our food arrived the excitment turned to disappoinment. Over cooked steak, fish and pork, microwaved mash to the point it was hard. Frozen chips, advertised as hand cut chips......the list goes on. The waitress was however very curtious when we complained and took items off our bill. I don't know if the chef was overworked or having a bad day. But the place could be amazing if the kitchen and bar were of the standard of the waiting on staff.

If you look at Sweeney Hall, the drive to Sweeney Hall, the scenery, the restaurant table... you would expect a five star restaurant with five star meals. Sadly it isn't. The reception was okay, waitresses were friendly and the food was certainly good food. But you would expect more of it. It is now rated 17th out of 91 restaurant on tripadvisor for Oswestry. I haven't tried the other 90 off course but i can imagine that there are 16 beter price/quality restaurants in the area.I wouldn't recommend against it as it was indeed good food and a lovely scenery. They also made a special posh like fish and chips kids menu for the 8-year old in our group. Had 5 2-course meals (1 kid, 4 grown-ups) without wine for 120£.

We were on our way home from a holiday and phoned to book a table for 10. We wanted to sit outside as it was a beautiful day and we had our dogs with us. Despite very short notice, ( less than 2 hrs.) when we arrived the staff had set a table outside for us. The service was excellent despite it being busy and the food was outstanding as usual. There was even a bowl of water for the dogs. It was the perfect end to a lovely holiday. We have had christenings, birthday parties and many family celebrations here over the past 20 yrs. and have never been disappointed. The hotel is set in beautiful surroundings and has a relaxing, friendly atmosphere. Many thanks once more to Sean and his team.

The situation of the venue is very pleasant, that's the good news. Now down the the luncheon on Tuesday 29. The service from the onset was bordering on "slack" there were six of us and after being shown to our reserved table, we ordered our drinks, after waiting quite a while, a member of our party had to go over to the bar to fetch our drinks, not a good start, we then perused the menu and decided what we wanted, again we waited, eventually we caught the eye of a waiter who took our order, again a wait, then hooray a young girl started to bring our starters, 2 at a time. I had a prawn cocktail, small frozen shrimps, oops I mean prawns, it was poor, served in a cocktail glass, all the cutlery I had was a knife and fork to eat it with, so I asked the young lady for a spoon, she bought me a desert spoon which was too large to get into the bottom of the glass. Onto the main course, it really goes down hill from hereon, I ordered plaice fillet which arrived curled up on the plate, impossible to get the fish of the skin, a mash of some kind, under-cooked leek, a boiled potato ditto cauliflower and a sauce which could have been anything, we did not have a dessert (cowards) one member of our party told the manager what we thought of the lunch and informed him, NO we would not be returning, We have eaten there 3 times in the past and this restaurant has really gone down.

Since moving to this part of the world, we are at our wit's end trying to find a restaurant who can not only provide good food, but good service too. The meal we had at Sweeney Hall was faultless, but the waiters and waitresses were very young (I got the impression they were working after school). I asked for a Bellini before dinner and some 15 minutes later was told they did not serve cocktails. We had to wait until almost our dinner was served before we got our pre dinner drinks and had to ask for a wine list. We were told that it was a busy night which was why service was a bit slow, but in reality it was because there was not enough staff on duty to cope sand certainly no experienced staff to help the ones there were.

This is the 2nd time that I have been here in 9 months, both times for a family reunion Sunday Lunch. Both meals were excellent, but this time I appreciated the beautiful gardens ( and a cool pre-lunch drink in the sunshine) and the rabbit warren of rooms that can hold up to 200 diners! We were a group of 13 and were given a private room at no extra cost -much appreciated. Everyone of all ages praised their lunches. Traditional food, well presented with generous portions. As a vegetarian I would have liked a more exciting starter choice than vegetable soup or melon, but the melon with a sorbet and coulis was delicious. The main course vegetarian option was vegan (a good idea if there is only 1! but a choice would be good). Luckily it was really tasty, a Moroccan-spiced vegetable charlotte which made me feel included with the others as I was able to share the veg etc with everyone. They were flexible with sauces and cream, ideal for diners with allergies and various dietary requirements. Good puddings too. A bargain for less than £20 ( the set Sunday Lunch)Friendly, calm staff on a busy afternoon. The Welsh speaking waitress (in England-just!) was particularly appreciated. Diolch yn fawr!A lovely old building, traditionally furnished and decorated, much larger inside than I had realised on my first visit. A very relaxing and convivial afternoon was had by all and we will return.

We had Sunday lunch and were not disappointed. We were greeted by a friendly face and looked after with drinks in the bar while we waited for our food. We were lucky enough to be shown to a table in a small room where we were all on our own so it was nice and private. We had gone for the 2 course special offer. Our main meal was very tasty with a very good choice of veggies. My only criticism was that my Yorkshire pud was far too stodgy and not very warm. Our desserts were lovely. WOW!!!! My new husband and I held our wedding and reception at the hotel and booked exclusive use which from the minute we arrived made it feel like a welcoming family home. From the breakfast in the morning arranged in a private dining room so me and my bridesmaids and family could all be together as we got steadily excited, to the morning preparations of the hairdresser and make up artist arriving Sean the owner and his young professional staff took total control of setting things up and letting us know about the timings etc. nothing was too much trouble and they made us all feel calm and relaxed as we already knew we were in good hands. I left all the wedding stuff in boxes and everything was set up perfectly with lots of additional touches. When it was time to come down for the ceremony Sean himself came to collect us from the bedroom and he looked as happy and as excited as we all felt. It really did feel like it was special to him even though he conducts lots of weddings at the hotel and this was what was so charming. The fact that he and his staff all looked as happy and excited for us as we all were!!!! The ceremony room is so majestic with its floor to ceiling windows and chandeliers and lends itself to wedding ceremonies perfectly with the light streaming through the windows and glimpses of all the beautiful countryside all around. Once the service was over the staff were immediately on hand to congratulate us as they handed out drinks and canapés to the guests while photos where being taken. Sean once again discreetly kept us advised of when the wedding breakfast was ready and then arranged a receiving line for us so we could greet all our guests individually before they were seated for the most delicious meal. Everyone complimented the sirloin beef especially and it was cooked to perfection. My brother is a chef and even he was extremely impressed with the food and commented in particular about the pastry base of the lemon tart he had as it was all hand made and to die for! I had the sticky toffee pud and personally felt I had died and gone to heaven with that! Again the staff were constantly on hand without being intrusive to ensure everyone had condiments, drinks topped up etc and moved efficiently between the tables to serve us all. And no mean feat to serve over 60 guests so we all had the food served at the same time. Incredible!!! After the wedding breakfast our guests mingled in between the bar and reception hall chatting and enjoying looking at the hotel and grounds while the staff very quickly and efficiently turned the room into the evening event with disco. During this time my new husband and I had the chance to catch up with our guests and every single one after complimenting us on my dress and the ceremony etc then went on to rave about the food, the hotel itself, the staff, Sean the owner and the brilliant choice we had made for our wedding!!The evening reception was again amazing, Sean had helped supply the disco and it was great. Everyone danced and then again raved about the evening buffet which was set out in the dining area and looked so beautiful and colourful it looked too good to eat. Guests as they were leaving the dining area with full plates were already commenting on how fantastic the food was once again. At the end of a long but magical day as our guests left or retired to their bedrooms the staff were quietly tidying up quickly and efficiently. We chatted to two of the lovely young girls who said they had thoroughly enjoyed being part of our wedding which was so nice to hear. On retiring to a very comfortable bed in the Bridal Suite we had the most sound sleep before all gathering to have a full cooked breakfast and say our final goodbyes to our families. And that ends our magical special wedding day that Sean and his staff played a huge part in making it so fantastic. We can't thank them enough and will be travelling from Nantwich to visit frequently now we have discovered a jewel in the Shropshire countryside!!!!!! ,

Had lunch with a friend one Tuesday lunchtime in March. Have had a good number of meals at various times and also at various functions over a number of years and the food has always been 10/10. It did take a long time to find a member of staff to assist us, could not find any staff at bar or reception. Eventually we were served and the staff were young but very polite and courteous. I had salmon for main which was perfectly cooked and presented and tasted super. For dessert the raspberry brulee was absolutely ammmmmmazing! Went here for Mothering Sunday, lovely setting and views. We were welcomed in and sat at the bar for a drink whilst waiting for our table. As it was Mother's day it was quite busy and they were obviously turning quite a few tables but the staff seemed to be very organised. Our meal was nice, lamb and pork quite dry, wishing they had offered a jug of hot gravy to go with it. A good selection of desserts to complete the meal in which we all had something different, these were delicious. The only problem going on such a busy day is you do feel like just a number and it really lacked atmosphere despite the grandeur of such a lovely country house. We will come again but on a quieter day. I have given it three stars for this reason and for the food which was just average. It was nice enough but that was it, your average Sunday lunch. We were given a lovely plant at the end of the meal which was a nice touch. Thank you.

Unfortunately they ran out of bananas so no banoffee pie, although they did offer us 'offee' pie with a skeleton of other fruit, so at least they were prepared to try. We had booked for an evening meal and arrived by taxi to find the place in darkness and found a hasty note saying that they were closed due to a power cut due to the weather. I knocked on the door and eventually it was opened by a gentleman, possibly the owner. He explained that the power had been off for most of the day and I asked why he had not phoned earlier to inform us of the problem as we would have cancelled our reservation and taxi and made other arrangements. Barely apologetic, he said the telephone system was down as well, what about mobile phones? I'm sure had we not turned up if it had been business as usual, they would have been quick enough to phone us for an explanation. Yes, I appreciate that they had circumstances beyond there control but think they could have been a bit more proactive with their clients. Sadly I'm not in a hurry to try them again.

We visited most recently for a family Sunday lunch. A party of nine, with ages ranging from fifteen months to eighty-six. We knew that this would be an ideal destination. We enjoyed leisurely aperitifs seated outside. Our two younger children explored the gardens with us. The menu is excellent. A two course meal for £12.95. A great and interesting choice. Those who had starters all found them delicious. Our chosen main courses of beef, lamb and salmon were lovely. The vegetables were generally good. Personally I do not like cauliflower cheese with a roast dinner, however that is a minor point. One thing did surprise us a little, the roast potatoes were not up to the usual standard, fried or frozen? We've found them to home cooked standard previously. Puddings were delightful. The creme brulee was fantastic. This never disappoints! The staff are all lovely and very helpful, especially with the children's requirements. We could not fault the service at all. Whether you are just looking for a great place to eat or somewhere for a few days away the Sweeney Hall Hotel is definitely worth a visit.

My wife and I had lunch here today. We both chose lamb Henry which was ,we thought ,braised lamb on a bed of mash etc. In the event it was a lamb shank which was so fatty it was inedible. There would have been more meat on a lamb chop. The bill was reduced by the value of the main course. This didn't' in anyway compensate for a ruined special occasion not to mention the cost of an indigestion remedy. We are local and will never be returning to the Sweeney.

We have been visiting Odfellows for over 8 years now and have never been disappointed! We reserved a table for 21st August for my Father in Laws birthday. As always the food and service was 10/10, we can not fault a single visit to Odfellows! As a local, I always recommend to everyone that we meet, and hopefully they will also attract some new custom from further afield!

Had a carvery today and it was lovely 👍. Great service & super friendly staff. 3 kinds of roast meat, good selection of vegetables, potatoes, stuffing balls & gravy. Everything was cooked to perfection & piping hot. Will definitely book again.
