Pakefield Plaice in Waveney

Best fish and chips we have had in many years. Visited Pakefield from The Midlands and again had to have fish and chips and curry sauce. Never dissapointed 5 star

This was our second visit to Pakefield Place, and we weren't disappointed. The guys serving and cooking were friendly and efficient. The fish was flaky and good; batter perhaps a little thicker than go for but just a personal preference and were too full to eat it anyway; chips were excellent...crisp snd cooked beautifully; enjoyed mushy peas. Overall impressed and all the better for sitting eating them looking out to sea. We will definitely return.

The best fish and chips I have tasted in a long time. Friendly staff will definitely visit again. I will recommend to friends and family.

Friendly, efficient service at a good price. A very clean environment, well-signed menu. Great to sit in the covered galley to eat (they kindly reopened this facility for us, even though we ordered close to closing time). Beach and two great pubs nearby too.

Just the best fish and chip shop in East Anglia….the herd flocks to Southwold/Aldeburgh but completely miss out on the tastiest offerings from this wonderful little chip shop. My haddock was sublime - the batter perfect and the fish fresh and sweet. Husband had skate and it was perfect. Chips; just as they should be … crispy, hot and plentiful! Sitting in the nearby car park eating fish and chips, overlooking the sea is a blissful experience. Staff are so welcoming and friendly in the shop too. It’s a firm favourite for and we are grateful for their brilliant service.

Awful fish and chips. I have loved this place in the past. And told so many about it. And the squid was well over cooked and ruined. It looked like new people running the shop. We will try it again just in case this was a one-off disaster. Visiting Pakefield Plaice has been a part of our visits to Pakefield and I hope service will be resumed.

Returned here a year after I last visited, I had a poor experience then and I had one today. We had two pieces of haddock and chips, the chips were passable but the fish was awful. It was greasy, tasteless, mushy and a funny grey colour. Don't understand the good reviews and the amount of regular customers picking up orders, all I can think is they've never tasted good fish and chips, there are any number of chippies in Lowestoft that are much much better. They left a funny taste in my mouth in more ways than one and cost me £20 for the pleasure.

Plain RUDE IF YOU COMPLAIN. NO SORRY. JUST RUDE! Ordered pie still frozen in the middle. Have a Savaloy!! No..we asked for a pie?????

I have tried all the fish & chip shops in Lowestoft & quite a few in Norfolk & Suffolk. As well as other parts of the country. In my opinion Pakefield Plaice is the best. Better than the renowned French's in Wells-next-the-Sea

A very friendly chap at the counter but sadly the chips were very poor in quality as also tasted stale, This was my first visit so not a a good memory to have.

We must have been unlucky as it was probably the worst bit of fish ever had Absolutely dripping in fat and the batter was awful so over cooked almost orange in colour so had to pick it all off , wasn’t given or offered any forks or serviettes and 2 cod and chips cost £29!!! Will not return

Not too bad sometimes but a lot of days they cook in warm oil so food is wringing wet in oil when eaten . It has a seating area if you want to eat outside and a car park close by.

Couldn't eat the chips we had brought to eat overlooking the sea as they had a horrible old oil taste (the cooking oil needed charging) Gross!!

Great place, lovely food, spectacular chips, very friendly proprietor. 100 m from the beach. Obviously very popular with the locals.

Just wanted a light supper and this little gem came up trumps. Ordered a portion of scampi and chips to share. We waited whilst it was freshly cooked and certainly didn’t disappoint. The chips were first class, always a sign of a good chippy! We ate them in the small enclosed courtyard beside the shop. One of the highlights of our visit to the area

Great fish and chips, freshly prepared; quick, friendly and efficient service. It is reassuring to find a place that can produce this essential English dish in a town that has a glorious history of fishing. A popular outlet with local people so there will often be a queue. A couple of pubs in the vicinity can cater for your liquid requirements.

I had walked past The Pakefield Plaice on many occasions over the years but only occasionally gone in for chips. However, I have now tried their food on two consecutive nights and the quality of the food and the service was outstanding on both occasions. The first occasion (a cold Sunday night) saw me have fish and chips which was a large portion and freshly cooked, top marks. The following evening I just wanted chips but ended up with chips and sausage again really good quality food. I fear that some of the traditional fish and chip shops in Lowestoft have seen a reduction in quality in recent years under pressure from their cost inflation (smaller portions, cooking oil used for longer etc). The Pakefield Plaice is worthy of your business.

Lovely fish and chips cooked fresh to order. Standard for my husband, gluten free for me! Really courteous service, so friendly, helpful and attentive.

Don't bother, the worst I've tasted for a long time. Fish overdone, chicken breast overdone and dried out. Most of two plates went into the bin.

Such a shame had great potential as in an excellent location but after ordering cod and chips what we were given was not cod. I am not totally sure what it was but it had a very strong flavour and and was more like plaice....

Huge portions. Ordered cos and chips 3 times and 2 would have been more than enough for 4 of us. Fish was lovely, nice light crispy batter and chips not greasy. Only slight annoyance got curry by mistake instead of mushy peas but don’t let...

We have always had our fish and chips from Pakefield plaice but we will have to find somewhere else, the fish was delicious but the chips were rubbish just like mc Donald's chips, please go back to the old way cooking nice chips.

Crispy batter, light, white cod, delicious chips with not a hint of sogginess, good mushy peas. Price was £16 for one medium and one small portion, which is okay. Best of all you can stroll 100 yards and eat them sitting on a public picnic...

Our chippy of choice. Brilliant value for money with their medium Cod and medium Chips portion often exceeding what some chip shops give you under their large portion sizes. Quality and taste are another bonus. Staff are friendly and quick to serve you, probably helped...

We had a long walk from South Pier to Pakefiled and accidentally came across this place. It is not very well advertised but a gem of a place. It is a shame they do not accept card lucky we had some cash on us. Lovely...

every visit is a treat of excellent fish and good chips. it is a pity that they use polystyrene boxes and not recyclable cardboard but a wonderful experience. Fabulous that chip shop owns such a lovely park with an overlook to Pakefield beach.

Those who give this chippy five stars are spot on. The guy who ate better fish and chips at Southwold probably paid twice as much. We are fortunate being pensioners as we only pay less than a fiver each for delicious fish and chips and four pounds for pie and chips. The portions are good The service very efficient. The guy who complained that someone laughed at him probably encountered a cultural barrier as the owners are Cypriot. There is always a queue outside, and deservedly so. Highly recommended.

We live locally and have a choice of 3 chippies within walking distance. This is our favourite. but we have to make sure we have cash to pay, as they do not take cards.

My husband and I Were staying around the corner from this fish and chip shop. We had take away medium cod and chips which we ate at home. Food was freshly cooked and hot. Food was very tasty and a good size portion. If the weather had been warmer we could have sat on one of the benches overlooking pakefield beach.

I only ordered 2 bags chips and 1 can of coca cola,that came to £4.40,and because I was going to pay with my card,they would charge me to the nearest £1 so I would have to pay 60p extra with card,so annoyed about that,no warnings about using cardsso I had to pay cash which I thought was normally shops do not like cash,so yes chips were nice,but did not like being charged to use cards no warning before to alert you

We were holidaying in Pakefield and heard good things about this place. It is a takeaway chip place so having placed our order for a cod, and a haddock both with chips, we waited in the car and it was brought out to us when cooked. We drove just up the road and parked in the car park overlooking the sea to enjoy them. You can’t best fish and chips by the beach and these were really delicious - and excellent value too. Good choice on the menu - including spam fritters!

What a lovely establishment run by such friendly and inviting people, nothing was too much trouble, fish cooked to order and was so tasty and even had a free bottle of vinegar because we spent over £30, you won’t be disappointed. Yep

Quite nice chips and enjoyed sitting on the beach eating them...but i've had to stop going here as the owner has laughed at me a couple of times and stared longer than is normal, not very polite tbh. I've had better chips in Southwold and the staff were friendlier.

An ideal place to park enjoy tasty fish & chips then an inspiring walk along the prom to Lowestoft town centre. Not much open but the walk will promote good health. Your health is your wealth!

These were the nicest fish and chips I have had for years .The Plaice and Haddock were melt in the mouth,thick fillets ,very fresh and cooked to order with yummy crispy batter . The chips were nearly as good as Yarmouth Market chips . Very friendly staff , happy to please . Good Covid precautions . Large amount of vegetarian options but limited vegan options .

We have been using this chip shop for the past 4 or 5 years and have never had a bad one. We usually visit around once a week. I'm both vegan and coeliac and can confirm that they fry in vegetable based oil and that their chips are fried separately to any meat/fish/batter. The shop owners are always helpful and friendly. Yes, there are sometimes big queues, but that is tantamount to a very popular chip shop that fries to order. Another quality about this chip shop is their very user friendly opening hours. They are one of the only chip shops that open on a Monday and don't close between lunch and evening. Hardworking business owners. Eat your chips in the near by car park overlooking the stunning beach/sea of Pakefield - either in your car or on one of the picnic benches or in the small yard with tables (when social distancing regulations allow).

Poor customer service insulted my hair cut , workers staring , chips all stuck together will not return.

Excellent spam fritter, cod roe, cod and yummy chips. were recommended by a local man who lives nearby. Friendly & helpful service and friendly customers.

The small cod was cooked fine. The large cod was undercooked and subsequently slightly mushy. Chips were nice.

I was finding my way to the Trowel and Hammer pub and suddenly found this chippy and it smelled so nice. So I went in and ordered medium fish and chips. When it arrived the portion was generous and the fish was more like a large. There was a seating area covered over where you could sit and eat them.The guy who served me was friendly and I will definitely be using this lovely chippy again the next time I am in Lowestoft.

This chippy was recommended to us on the basis that the chips were never greasy and the fish was cooked to order and that is exactly what we found; lovely. Covid precautions adhered to. there are loads of benches nearby with a great sea view. Spot on traditional fish and chips at the seaside.

Great food, there was a bit of a wait naturally but no big deal. But excellent, good value and good portion sizes!

We stayed in Pakefield for a week and decided on fish and chips in two occasions. The first time we just turned up, there was a small queue socially distancing but we were served quickly, the food is cooked fresh and it tasted delicious. The second time we ordered by telephone as it was a large order. Again everything freshly cooked and was ready when they said it would be. Huge portions, our party had the haddock, cod, fish bites and scampi! Everything was eaten! Highly recommended!

The food was good - the batter on the fish was crispy, the fish moist and well cooked, the chips were freshly cooked and the whole meal was good value for money with good portion sizes. Customer service was poor. The girl on the till (possibly inexperienced) put the order through incorrectly and as a result a couple of sausages were cooked in batter rather than plain. Not a big problem however, children being children, would not have eaten them, so I had to insist they were plain. The more senior girl then told me that I had ordered incorrectly and it was my fault (she hadn’t even taken my order). I apologised, to be polite, but explained that I put in the correct order and the girl on the till must have put it through incorrectly - which she had. However, even though it was very clear and agreed it was a till mistake, the attitude of the two serving did not change and it took the guy who was frying to call over not to worry and he would have it sorted in 5 minutes, to alleviate the situation. We waited for 15-20 minutes in total. Social distancing was certainly in place - 1 in, 1 out, and signs were clear, however this did result in lots of people standing around outside and some confusion which was left to customers to sort out. Have been visiting here for over 30 years and will continue to do so, hoping that - on this occasion - it was just a bad day.

Customer service was poor as our order was ‘lost’ and we ended up waiting 40 minutes for our order if 2 x cod and chips. No apologies , nothing , just a very small portion of chips , we will not be returning.

Always get our fish and chips from here, always busy which shows they are good, my daughter is so fuzzy, but will always have fish here, its so nice and not greasy.

Thought we would have a walk and some fish and chips for a change. As we were waiting for our order, 6 people came out of the "customer eating area". 2 other people then went in to the area and sat down to eat their food. We got our order and went in to the undercover eating area and sat at a table observing the social distancing regulations. The other couple finished their food and left leaving my partner and myself. One of the workers came in to this clearly marked "customer eating area", lit a cigarette and them promptly told us that we were "not allowed to eat there". I went to leave and he said "it is OK, but next time no eating here"Well, I can say I wont be eating there next time as I will NOT be returning.If it wasn't ment to be used then the tables and chairs should be stacked, not set up. Also, other people had been eating in there and the area was marked up for "customers." It should NOT be used as a smoking shelter for staff and I am sure is against health and hygiene regulations.Why this staff member singled us out I don't know. Not very friendly at all.

Had a family take away last night as we fancied some fish and chips. However the chips were really poor: tiny scraps of potato, really dry as if kept warm for a long time and only lukewarm. Fish was nothing special. I mean you have one job - to make fish and chips. Why not put some care and attention into it? Am disappointed and annoyed. Must do better!

Very good. They are still operating at present and food is served through a window for safety reasons. Last minute mid week tea. We were on our bikes and decided to pop in and order fish and chips. Two large cod and chips...fried to order. The batter was light and crisp, and really fresh white cod, the chips were plentiful and perfectly cooked. This place is always busy and deserves a good review, as the team are really friendly, work quickly and efficiently, and the food was lovely.

The fish and chips were good, but the wait is long, even for freshly cooked fish, and the service disorganised, which doesn't help. There are tables outside and its seconds walk to the cliff top.

Went at midday for chips waited 20 minutes for chips to be cooked only to find they were then mixed in with the old chips so 50% inedible! small child standing on serving counter not very hygienic!

I've had fish and chips here a few times... I always get haddock and chips and it's really nice... They provide a couple of tables and a few chairs if you wish to eat outside or you can walk round the corner and eat on the green where there are benches, just be careful of the seagulls.

Used this chip shop several times. Fish & chips are very good. The people who run the place are really friendly. Location is perfect to wander 100 yds and eat your food on the cliffs overlooking the sea. Highly recommended

Use this shop when we need fish and chips, great food, well cooked, friendly staff and warm smiles. Have recommended to others with similar response, well done guys .. will become a regular, having just moved into the area. Park outside or walk along the promenade and enjoy the food, fresh from the counter or take home.

THE best fish and chips that you can buy in Lowestoft today..always freshly fried for you the fish is excellent..the chips are superb chip shop chips and they even do my favourite "scraps"!! The staff are super friendly :)

We were staying across the road for a long weekend and each time we opened the door the smell was fantastic so we promised ourselves one night we would have fish & chips from there .

We were staying at a hotel locally and came across this fish and chip shop. The food was freshly cooked and of excellent quality. We sat on the common at a picnic bench overlooking the sea to eat them, perfect! There are tables and chairs at the takeaway as well.

No better fish and chips anywhere in this area. Absolutely wonderful crispy golden fish that just melts in the mouth. Why go anywhere else?

Great chippy but doesn’t serve baked beans! However, all the food is cooked to order, so it does take a while but it is worth waiting for. My chips, fish cake and peas were delicious and the crumb on the fish cake was nice and crispy. Other half enjoyed his fish and chips. Near a common where you can sit and eat whilst looking at the sea. Would return and will try the pea fritter next time!

Decided to have a fish and chip tea. Plaice for me , cod for my husband both beautifully cooked and served by friendly staff, especially the young man who packed it up for us.

Quite how a sausage and chips takes as long as it does god only knows. We got it eventually after 25 minutes. Cannot recommend.

I hadn’t been here for a couple of years as wasn’t the closest to my house, however, after realising it was open on a Sunday we gave it a go.....omg! Yummy! Fish was amazing and the chips even better. Looking forward to my next Sunday alternative, maybe even my regular Sunday meal even if I have to drive an extra mile!

This is a popular chippy and ive always had good fish and chips. Prices are average for the area and it’s close to the cliffs to get a nice view whilst eating them.

We bought cod and chips here and luckily got one large one between us because it was enormous! The most delicious fish ever! Beautiful batter and nicely cooked for crispy, golden loveliness.

Staying back home in Lowestoft we really fancied fish and chips. We left the town forty years ago so had lost touch with real fish and chip shops in the town. My mum and dad often used to get fish and chips in Pakefield and sit by the cliffs and enjoy them looking out to sea. So we decided to do the same last Saturday evening. We were greeted by some really pleasant, I assume, East European gentlemen. Ordered large cod for me and a medium one for my wife The fish was cooked to order and despite there being some chips remaining in the warmer our were freshly cooked. As we requested the meal open it was served in cardboard cartons. The chips we placed in the carton first and the carton handed to us to add salt and vinegar, then the fish was placed on top to allow further addition of salt and vinegar. we were furnished with plastic forks and returned to the car to eat our supper. The fish and chips were superb equal to those in Steele's fish restaurant in Cleethorpes or the best in Whitby! Light and crispy batter, succulent, sweet fish and wonderful chips. Will be a must to visit next time we go home!

We are very local, went on Friday 28th Oct. Really fancied fish and,chips having just had an op. beginning of week. My husband went and ordered Haddock and chips. We have used this fish and chip shop for over 20 years and this was the worst fish and chips we have had anywhere in Britain. The fish was "just" cooked. The batter had no colour and was running in grease, Batter came off one side as it was stuck to the greaseproof paper. Chips were colourless and had no taste whatsoever. What a waste of money. Won't be going there until they change hands just to see if they have improved! The best fish and chips there, was when John and Paula and family ran it.

Went here with my boys and husband on Saturday on our holiday! Overall the food was very nice perfect Cod and chips, Cod was well battered and chips weren’t greasy! My boys really enjoyed their chicken nuggets and battered sausage. Despite the lovely food the wait was around 15 minutes and the bench we sat on was wobbly made me feel a tad sick. Considering my boys are boys they got very restless. One of my boys was playing with his fidget spinner and the man bethind the counter gave him a strange look making him uncomfortable. The food was great though

This is our local and the quality is very good, 5+. We always phone ahead and within 10 minutes our perfectly cooked haddock and chips are waiting for us. Easily better than Aldeburgh. Polite, friendly service too!

Yes there was a slight wait whilst your food is being cooked, but the banter in there was great ... everyone enjoyed their food and we were shocked and happy that there were some things were on the menu that we hadn't seen for years...

These are the best you will find, they are simply fantastic. We always come here on our trips to Pakefield...
