It was great to be back after lockdown, and so pleased this was where we chose to go on our first pub visit! The garden is beautiful, and had a great atmosphere. Everything was super COVID safe and we felt really comfortable. The food was incredible, so delicious and great portion sizes. I would recommend the cheese burger - it was amazing!! But the best thing about our visit was Molly. She greeted us at the door, made ‘checking in’ quick and easy and took care of us through our meal. She was fun, helpful and constantly checking on us and just made the whole experience perfect. We will be back soon to see you Molly!

We had such a stunning meal here last night, definitely the best food I've eaten this side of the river. The first time we'd ventured out to the pub since march! The set menu was well thought out and reasonably priced, and my partner's main was vegetarian and filling, which is a rare suprise in a pub. Beautiful old room with exposed beams and a fire on the hearth fills the room with a great smoky vibe. Great beers on tap and a super affable manager who was happy to have a chat. Covid precautions were duly followed and we both felt safe.Only downside was our waitress, who despite only having 2 tables on a very quiet Monday, acted like it was a tremendous chore to wait on us, we felt a little uneasy with her but remained as pleasant as possible. But no doubt we will be returning as the food, the setting and the beers were top notch. Compliments to the Chef!

Altamente recomendado.

The staff pretended to care, but were just going through the motions. Referring to couples as ‘guys’ is insulting and betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the art of service; which in this establishment was non-existent. More fool me, in the circumstances, for being willing to pay a 10% tip. And the food was woeful: my burger comfortably the worst I have eaten in a while: coldish, overcooked with the most pathetic, ungenerous portion of coleslaw you could imagine. Lovely looking pub, in a great location is no excuse for people who are supposed to be looking after you for not giving a damn.Don’t bother, unless only for a drink.

We were really looking forward to a return to a great pub and in particular the lovely garden. Called in advance and was told the garden tables were full but there should be space shortly. When we arrived (15 mins later) we were told the wait could be an hour. We were also told we could not sit together because there was more than 6 of us. Having checked the gov guidelines later, this is not actually the case, as we were from 2 households only. (They didn't ask us). We were also told the children must sit at the table at all times in the garden - no playing. (He said "it's the law".) Wow - hardly a warm welcome, especially for families. Went to a nearby pub in the end and had a lovely time in the garden!

It’s nice to see the Packhorse pub in SouthStoke Bath opening its doors again after the lockdown albeit in a limited way for the moment. I must admit wondering how they would make the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus work in such an old and historic building but I need not have worried clearly a lot of thought has gone into creating a friendly atmosphere whilst keeping people safe with social distance rules and other measures.Food, drinks and service all excellent although on a slightly limited service for food. So well done to all the front of house staff plus all the people working as volunteers behind the scenes for all your efforts hopefully it will not be too long before you are back up to full speed.

Having established that there was a problem with the online booking, which was probably our fault, I was amazed that they were able to fit us in a lovely table for 4 people. This was followed by coffee Brule which again was outstanding and delicious to the last bite.Good wine list and reasonably Priced with house wine coming in under £20 a bottle so it's affordable. We ate well and drank well with the bill coming to about £50 per person with everyone extremely satisfied.I'm delighted to see this establishment moved from strength to strength and it's great to see that it continues to be well supported both by locals and visitors from further afield.Congratulations to everyone for making it happen-it doesn't just take place. If you added up all the customers' degrees you'd get a heatwave. Staff too probably. Lovely colours, oak, artisan door furniture, steep stairs, C21st toilets. House Shiraz was fine, Butcombe beer as it should be. We too were there for Burns night: the haggis starter was very good; haggis pie for main was rather short of...haggis. Celeriac plentiful. It's a popular old building refurbished with such commitment and taste you can feel the ache for authenticity. The result is it doesn't feel like a village pub because it's correct and lacks the eccentric, personal, messy touch. You should visit though, and we'll go again: it's very nice, and service was good, with an attentive manager. Parking is tight: get the bus to the Cross Keys and walk down.

We turned up on a Saturday lunchtime without a booking and despite it being busy were squeezed in in the upstairs dining area. The food and beer was excellent, very reasonably priced and James and his staff very friendly and attentive. All four of us had different meals and I chose the sausage and mash, which was superb. This is my benchmark for pub food. Any pub can do bangers band mash, but only a chosen few do it really well.

Tricky as this has such juxtaposing highlights and weaknesses. On the plus side the location and decor is perfect. However the bar service is repeatedly terrible; clearly they have a staff sytem where staff are either allowed to serve drinks at the bar, or not, and as a result there's a long waiting time. They need to get some training in place for staff as other places who offer lunch at a similar rate with similar quality food have much better service. We left a tip but only because we felt sorry for the staff; not because the service was good. The Sunday lunch was 7/10 for taste, but 2 roasties in an Aunt Bessie's style yorkshire isn't great. If roast chicken is on the menu then you expect bread sauce - sadly there wasn't any. We're not that keen on puddings but the sticky toffee pudding was the highlight. We'd almost go back again for that.

Booked New Year's Day lunch here to follow a family walk. When we booked, for 2.00p.m. were told not to be late, make it 1.45 for 2.00. Arrived at 1.45 as requested. Tried to order at about 1.50 but were told by a very pleasant but rather flustered young waitress that we had booked for 2.00 so she couldn't take the order until 2.00 ! About 2.30 she took the order but seemed a bit unsure of everything. By 3.00 nothing had arrived, someone who seemed to be a manager started to apologise and told us it would be another 10 minutes, about 15 - 20 minutes later food started to appear , not exactly what we ordered and warmish rather than hot. From the look of the food it had been plated maybe 20 - 30 minutes earlier and sitting somewhere waiting to be served. Finally managed to get a bill and in fairness they made a generous discount. Problem is of course that no amount of discount compensates for endless waiting and mediocre food. Given that lunches were booked, they emphasised the need to be on time - we were - why then do they make such a shambles of actually serving? Such A pity , given the very laudable efforts of the community to "save" their village pub. However, unless they sharpen up their act, train the staff and make sure the kitchen can cope with the bookings taken, one wonders - why bother?

We popped in to The Packhorse for lunch in the week. This place holds a special place in my heart, as my mum and dad used to “court” here 70 years ago. We used to live locally, but hadn’t visited since it was “bought by the community”. Nice to see the place hadn’t changed to much and still had its old world charm. It was a bit chilly but soon the open fire heated up the place quickly. We all ordered burger and I had the triple cooked chips with mine. Burger was really, really good, but OMG the triple cooked chips were the best I have had in many years. Balans in Soho, have always held that top spot for many years in my books, but these were to die for and have knocked Balans off the top spot. The Packhorse now owns my no 1 spot for best triple cooked chips.....ever. :0). Great food, lovely place, as Arne said......” I will be back”.......:0)

Delicious food, lovely staff and set in a beautiful part of the world, you can’t really go wrong here, a pint in the garden in my dream. I’ll always come back here when I’m home even though I live in Essex now.

We used trip advisor to find this little gem when we had 3 hrs to kill in between two family engagements. The staff were amazing, service wonderful and the food was fantastic.

It is lovely to see this pub reopened as a community initiative and they have done a fantastic job! The food we ate was really tasty and the old building is fabulous. Not a day for sitting in the garden but another evening ...

We regularly come to the Packhorse for wine, the wonderful views, hospitality and the fish and chips (which I order every time). The staff are kind and accommodating, the food is delicious and the garden is beautiful!! It’s the best place to be regardless of the time or weather, whether it’s a Friday night with a glass of wine or a Tuesday afternoon for a coffee!! James is also fantastic-the best landlord I have ever met!! Highly recommended!!!

Spent a very enjoyable evening here, sitting in the garden - it must be one of the most beautiful pub gardens anywhere. The whole pub has undergone a wonderful restoration and is now even better than it was years ago. Great choice of local real ales, quirky and slightly pricey food menu but what we had was delicious. Definitely somewhere to go again.

What a terrible evening. Over an hour wait to receive barely adequate food. Glasses on the table were filthy. The chair was badly stained (not new!) and the staff provided ambivalent customer service. Still waiting for the mustard to arrive. When asked how the service was I responded and the member of staff tried to justify the woeful service.

I read Grace Dent's Grauniad restaurant reviews on a regular basis. Sadly, living in the great Northern wasteland (i.e. above the Severn/Trent line and DEFINITELY not in London!) I rarely get a chance to visit the lucky (!) recipients of her gentle ministrations.

A beautiful building in stunning surroundings was our first impression of The Packhorse. We enjoyed our drinks in the lovely beer garden and then went inside for our Sunday lunch. The staff were incredibly friendly and nothing was to much trouble. We were a large group and most of us went for either the roast chicken or beef roast, and we all agreed that it was the best Sunday roast we have had ! When we next visit Bath we will certainly be re visiting the Packhorse !

I’m writing this review after some thought to be helpful, hopefully, to the management of the Inn, and to the shareholders, several of whom are friends of ours. My wife and I have admired the tremendous community spirit that saw the Inn’s revival a couple of years ago. When it first opened, reviews from these friends and others were excellent, and we’ve been meaning to try it out ourselves but didn’t get round to it until last week, when we decided a Wedding Anniversary lunch was the perfect occasion. It was a glorious day, and we found a shady spot outside in the garden and settled in. Some very tasty Prosecco and thoroughly excellent olives helped things move along, although my wife had to go and ask for the olives after the delightful waitress had forgotten them. We watched with increasing bemusement as a succession of plates were carried into the garden and the waiter or waitress shouted for ‘Table 68?’ and sometimes wondered around for minutes on end to find the correct guests with the correct spoon-in-beer-bottle number, all the while the food getting cold. Why not just number the tables instead, like most professionally-run establishments? We could not understand this, but it did provide some entertainment as we waited....and waited. 50 minutes after settling in, our single course arrived (with an apology for the delay). My wife had steak bavette: nicely cooked but very gristly, with two major defects - the chef had sat the steak on a flatbread (which tasted and had the texture of frozen Pitta bread from a low-grade supermarket), which of course steadily soaked up the blood. Halfway through it, my wife had had enough - it looked awful, this blood-soaked pitta that tasted of cardboard: what a poor serving decision. I’m sorry to say that the chips were absolutely shocking. Without wishing to be rude, and truly wanting to be helpful, I can honestly say that I’ve had better chips at Macdonald’s. Mushy, almost damp, washed-out tasting and entirely unappetising, these were impossibly poor chips - I was convinced they were re-heated frozen ones from a supermarket.

Trying to be fair to the Packhorse, think we came at exactly the wrong time of year. The weather had been great, so they`d set up for BBQ and outdoor eating and it turned cold, raining and windy! As winter was supposed to be gone, there weren`t any fires, so it was a bit bleak inside. The food was fine and fairly priced and I should think on a fine day it`d be packed solid in the charming garden area and in the winter with log fires, beautifully cosy and welcoming inside. We just hit it on an unsuitable weather day. Would certainly go again.

Decided to go on a Lovely Country Walk with the family last Saturday lunchtime. So walked to the Packhorse from Bath. Our usual walk with beautiful views across the Southstoke valley. With two dogs, five adults and our baby grandson in tow we hoped to stop for a light lunch at the Packhorse. We managed to find a table in the garden but alas no umbrella so was in the full sun(this has been an ongoing problem we have found not enough umbrella's for the size of the garden). After a wait at the bar we asked for drinks and a menu.We had arrived around 2.15! So on looking on the main menu there appeared to be no sandwich option.I then went to the bar to ask for the lighter menu and was told quite abruptly by a member of staff that they had finished serving food and they no longer do sandwiches! We were not aware that food stopped at 2.30 on a Saturday afternoon and when asking for the menu I would have thought a member of staff could have given us a heads up that the kitchen was closing shortly! So we went hungry but walked back up the hill and found a very pleasant Public House that could feed us. I cannot believe that the Packhorse has now stopped serving sandwiches at all, when enquiring I was told it was the Chef"s decision! I think they are forgetting it is a Country Pub and not everyone needs or wants a hot meal on a hot summers day!! We have eaten here on several occasions since the pub reopened and in our opinion and several of our friends who have also been there have said that the menu is too limited. With a heavy heart I have decided to write this review as we have always frequented this beautiful Pub for many, many years. I think it needs to decide whether it is a Pub (serving some pub classic's) or a fancy restaurant!!!
