Authentic English pub fare, including local Peak District variations. Great main course and dessert, and - together with drinks - at a very reasonable price. Friendly and attentive staff. Lovely setting. Highly recommended. Cheers!

We stayed in New Mills (Derbyshire) for seven days and ate at the Pack Horse on four of them. The customer service and friendliness of staff never waivered. A good choice of food meant never having the same meal twice. Booking in advance is highly recommended as the place seemed very popular during our visits.

Beautiful setting and a really looked after building and gardens. We went for a family meal within covid restrictions, still outdoor-only and table service. All covid-safe precautions in place. The sunshine and stunning scenery helped but they had put real effort into the landscaping and layout. We noticed the little rooms for staying - something we will certainly consider for the future.Service was good despite it being busy and the food was excellent. We all ate different meals and all were happy with their choices.Friendly smiling staff and a great atmosphere in a truly beautiful location. Recommended!!

Did a lovely circular route walk ending at the pack horse for Sunday lunch. Brilliantly Covid compliant with very attentive staff, the Sunday lunch was fantastic and they amended the Sunday dinners to fit in with my slightly fussy daughters. The doombar was fantastic obvious signs of a well kept cellar my only criticism of the pack horse is that it isn’t my local in Smalley thanks to all the staff we will definitely be back.

Three generations had different choices for lunch and we were all very pleased. Chicken/mushroom soup with warm roll and suet crust steak pie with chips and veg satisfied the hungry young man. I opted for prawn salad - very good. My mother had a good baked potato with side salad and prawns. Friendly service, good distancing. Great views from high up and a little way outside the town. Very enjoyable visit. Recommend.

My partner and I stopped by here for a spot of lunch after a long walk. If we hadn’t have already paid a ridiculous amount of money for our meals, we would have walked straight out. Card machine wasn’t working which is fine, these things happen. We paid through PayPal instead. As soon as we sat down, we noticed how sticky the tables were, and the dust collected around all ornaments. Floors looked like they hadn’t been swept for weeks. Just over £35 for 2 burgers and drinks, and the food was appealing. Burgers were bone dry and over cooked and chips were soggy and cold. Neither of us ate much, and got out as quickly as we could. Would never return. However the staff were friendly.

The staff are very efficient, took our order and promptly arrive with mats cutlery s/p etc. Our meals were spot on hot, and plenty on the plates. They have really thought about how to accommodate customers during this mad time. A BIG well done and thank you.

We absolutely loved our meal here last week. Was fantastic! We both loved my garlic mushrooms starter and my cheese & onion pie the most. The pie is the best around! Great prices, service & love the place. My only criticism is that as much as the waitresses were working so hard to keep everything very clean, I would have felt better if they were wearing a visor when coming over to the tables when taking orders and serving, as they have to get quite close to the customers. Other than that, it was fab, and will be back very soon. Thank you

Can't really find too many faults with this place after a 3 night stay. It's just out of town on main road, but the road itself is not too busy (in February) so it's pretty quiet. It's a fairly small, very friendly, pud/hotel and serves up very decent food. Breakfasts and one evening meal sampled, and everything was good. But it also has enough atmosphere to just use as a pub for a drink. Staff always helpful, attentive and polite.

We travelled from Chesterfield as I had read the reports on TripAdvisor and we like a run out on a Saturday.Pub was very packed but we found a table. Only one girl taking drink and food orders so had quite a wait to place order. My husband is a massive pie fan so was looking forward to his steak pie. When it came I could see the disappointment on his face. It was not a very big portion. For £10.95 there was alot of gravy and not very much meat, the pastry was hard too. I had a better experience, my gammon was good £12.95 and so were my onions rings £2.95 my eggs were also lovely and runny. We won't be visiting again as the drive was not worth the meal at the end.

Following a very enjoyable visit to the New Mills Millenium walk we tried to find a place to eat in town but only one pub was offering a very basic menu. Based on trip advisor we went to the Pack Horse Inn to find a lovely building with great views and a comfortable and well decorated interior. The welcome we received was great and service was fist class. Unfortunatley although the menu was varied the food was distinctly avaerage. The prawn curry was watery and needed thickening the halibut steak itself was lovely but the vegetables were overcooked and there were far too many potatoes on the plate. A redeeming factor was the excellent beer.

Breakfast quality and selection could be improved as it was disappointing and not a good last impression, could have a selection of fresh fruit, selection of yoghurt especially natural that is very popular now. Internet available but a little Limited in some bedrooms. Plenty of off road parking. Lovely views from the pub area. Would recommend the place and we will certainly go back again as it’s close to New Mills .

We live out of the area and were meeting some friends for a party so came across The Pack Horse Inn on-line. We were not disappointed. First, there's a large car park, we checked in at the bar and were shown to our room which was in an old stable block attached to the pub. The room and en-suite (with toiletries) were perfect, warm, clean, a huge bed and everything you need and more from a B&B room, even a bowl of fruit. We went through to the bar and Hubby was impressed by the selection of draught beers and tried several of them. After meeting our friends in the evening, we returned to the bar but I was feeling so cold, so I asked if I could have a hot chocolate and they made a delicious one. Time for bed and the bed was so comfy, extra pillows in the wardrobe and a blanket too should they be needed. We woke feeling refreshed and ready for the drive home after breakfast.Breakfast is served in the dining room of the pub. On the sideboard are cereals, fruit salad and fruit juice, which you help yourself to. A lovely member of staff took our order for a full cooked breakfast and it was absolutely perfect. I don't recall the last time I had friend bread but it was just how I remember it to be and the sausage and bacon were fabulous.I totally enjoyed our night at The Pack Horse Inn and hope to return again to experience dinner there as our friends told us that is very good too, so I give The Pack Horse a big fat five out of five. Absolutely perfect!

Basic food and really expensive for what it is, nothing much to write home about, accompaniments to mains lacking or none existent. We ate here the other day, I had the Pork dinner, the meal costs are a tad on the higher side I feel for what you get, this place has a good rep so its always busy and you feel like your crammed in a little bit, sometimes having to share a table with others, I feel they should lose some tables or rearrange them better to fit people in better rather than try to accommodate more for profit. I cant say why could have been the food? but I had a bad tummy ache all the following day, thinking back I ordered a pint of tetley's bitter and it was a bit cloudy and the head wasn't great, the bar lady reassured me it was a new barrel but I didnt see her pumping to get a decent head (flat) I wasn't convinced but I drank it anyway and ordered a 2nd around a half hour later, this one was a bit better. The food was OK, decent but not a wow kind of place, they overloaded the potato's in fact none of us finished them off, there were literally loads, however the portions of meat were great too so cant really complain, maybe overloading the potato's justifies charging much more? Nice location, great views but average food really, I have eaten better, but I guess what can you get for a Sunday type dinner, hard to excel with something so simple, maybe a few chefy twists to separate it from the norm to justify paying £12 for a Sunday lunch? when there are some lovely carvery's local for only £7 each of around the same quality. All in all, decent location, decent food, (not sure) on the beer, but needs some razzmatazz to make it memorable, what makes me want to go back errrm

I have been here on a number of occasions now and always want to go back. There is a good selection of food on offer plus the daily specials which is reasonable price. Small but cosy pub which has a dining area if you do not want to sit in the bar. Friendly service. I will be back

No great expectations of a pub on the outskirts of New Mills but could not have been more wrong! What a delightful place to stay. Meals are truly delicious, service could not be better, and the accommodation superb! Ensuite and bedroom immaculate with extras such as a large bowl of fresh fruit, a wide range of teas to choose from and coffee and nothing was too much trouble for the pleasant staff and superb chef.

We visited here for lunch after a walk along the millennium bridge. We were surprised that it wasn't a dog friendly pub so had to sit in the lovely garden area although it wasn't the weather for it. I had cheese and chutney baguette which disappointedly was Branston pickle with a salad garnish £5.95. Lovely staff and pub but won't be visiting again

We booked one night yet ended up staying two at the inn. First night we met up with local family members for dinner and the food was so Good. Breakfast is awesome with many choices and attentive servers. We had their homemade soup and sandwich for late lunch and a later dinner which was a balti chicken. All the meals we had we're well prepared and at a great price

The Pack Horse is a pub/restaurant/hotel situated on the side of a hill overlooking Birch Vale. You can eat in the pub or there is a more formal reataurant area to the rear. The food is always good with plenty of choice and the staff and service are first class. Good selection of real ale too.

Decent price for decent food. Didn't book a table on a Saturday night, but they squeezed us in. Some meals better than others (lamb cutlets were spot on, chicken methi great, king prawn balti less so), but good value for money.

Great Pub - excellent food and good prices. Fascinating 'nick nacks' and every bit of old brass shiny. The whole place is spick and span. Just a short drive or walk from our accommodation at Ladygate Farm. Pack Horse Inn is highly recommended by the owners at Ladygate and we agree!

A meal for 4 (two couples) and all eating something different (there was a great choice). We were all delighted with the food and presentation. I sometimes find the vegetables served in restaurants are not just al dente but almost raw! This was not the case here, the selection was good and perfectly cooked. As it was Monday, it was very quiet but it is a lovely place with amazing views outside. The staff were friendly and the service good. If only I'd had room for one of those desserts......! We will definitely be back.
