As a special weekend, we decided to stay at this hotel for 1 night, The rooms are very clean and well presented. Staff at reception were helpful and friendly. The only thing that let it down was the breakfast area on Sunday morning. Most hotels of this standard, the staff would show you to a table, but here it was a case of sit where you like. Fine, apart from the amount of tables which had not been cleared or reset for guests. During our 45 minutes at breakfast, there were at least 6 tables in our immediate area which had just been left. The food itself was fine, but a hotel of this standard should not allow this to happen. The breakfast manager needs to be in control of the whole area.

The hotel is fine as far as standard four star hotels go. My issue is with parking. I forgot to key my car registration into the screen on the reception desk and sure enough I received a parking ticket through the post. As I had stayed in the hotel a few times recently and remembered paying, I checked with the hotel and someone checked in their system and said they found a receipt confirming I paid. I relayed this to the parking company who insisted I had not paid. On further investigation, it turned out that the hotel had looked at an older receipt. By this time the penalty had risen to £70. The hotel basically washed their hands of it and I was left to settle the bill. Suffice to say, I will never be staying in this hotel again.

In a good location but let down by the little things. We had a large bedroom with a tiny bed pretending to be a four poster. The room had adequate space for a king size bed, which would have made a decent nights sleep. The thin cover which was pretending to be a duvet was only big enough to cover bed once two adults underneath it turned into a wrestling match who got the cover. The windows were old and latches broken.

I have been a member of the leisure centre at this hotel for 13 years. Recently they have installed a paid parking scheme managed by an outside company. This means that if there are any issues, you get no help or support and they dodge my calls asking for it. The company does not say why they issue the ticket, just that you broke their conditions. I used to use the spa facilities and the restaurant but now I don't dare for fear of another £70 ticket. I would steer clear- there are other hotlels in Oxford where you will get better service.

My wife brought me here overnight as a birthday treat - best birthday present ever. The setting is very picturesque and of course quiet. Reception was professional, friendly and helpful - they knew exactly what they were doing. Our room was very comfortable and clean and the absence of a bath-plug was sorted out quickly and professionally by a manager. We enjoyed drinks in the quad before heading down for dinner - what a treat! Cristian was friendly, attentive and a consummate professional - there when we needed him, completely skilled and not intrusive at all. The food was simply sublime - the most tender, tasty lamb I have eaten in 12 years in the UK. My wife said her goat's cheese and textures of beetroot was both heavenly and clever and my beef salad was good too. My wife had the duck with butternut and poached pear which she said was very well prepared. Pudding was a creme brulee that was light but perfectly cooked and we felt thoroughly pampered with our table overlooking the lawns. After a very good night's sleep, we enjoyed breakfast - a fairly typical buffet but with good service and the ability to accommodate my gluten-free requirements and perfectly poached eggs. Check-out was straightforward and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, we'll definitely be back.

I met a friend for lunch on Tuesday. As she works on Abingdon Road we decided to go to the Oxford Spires. I’ve been there a few times before but not since it has changed ownership from the Four Pillars. The bar was re-furbished a while back and is now much improved with relaxing decor and plenty of light. We chose a table close to the outside seating area so we got the benefit of the lovely sunny weather without getting too hot.We couldn’t see anything we wanted at first but noticed that for lighter choices you could ask for their ‘seasonal menu’ so I requested this when I ordered a white Americano for myself and a diet coke for my friend from the bar. I was handed a small perspex stand with a menu inside. I think it would have been simpler if these had been placed on the tables to begin with. The 2 male bar tenders were laughing & chatting with a young girl at the bar when I went to order but they were polite and halted their conversation to take my order.I took the drinks to the table and after much deliberation my friend and I both chose the same dish, Char-grilled vegetable ciabatta, and decided to share a side portion of chips. My coffee was a little stronger than I normally like but tasted good. There was a biscuit served with it which I did not want so I gave this to my friend. When the food arrived we had a some chips and a small salad on each plate which we hadn’t expected. The waitress then brought over a bowl of chips for us to share and we said we hadn’t realised that the dish came with chips and so we needn’t have ordered any extra. The sandwich was described in the menu as Char grilled vegetables with mozzarella on toasted tomato and herb ciabatta, however it looked more like a pannini than ciabatta When my friend queried this with the waitress she responded, rather abruptly, that it was definitely the ciabatta. The sandwich was very tasty however the bread contained no tomato and no herbs and tasked very much like a pannini. I tried the salad but unfortunately it had been smothered with a sweet dressing which I didn’t like so I wasn’t able to eat it. If I had known that there would be salad with it I would have requested the dressing on the side. My friend asked for some balsamic vinegar but was given 2 sachets of malt vinegar instead. The waitress disappeared again before she could tell her so she did without the balsamic in the end. The chips were very tasty too however there were far too many of them and a lot were left.No one came to ask if our meal was OK and it was quite some time before our dirty crockery was collected. I asked the waiter if I could order another coffee and was rather surprised that he did not ask my friend if she would also like something so I had to quickly ask her before he rushed away again (it was not at all busy in the bar by the way). She ordered a cappuccino. The coffee’s arrived both with biscuits. My friend ate half of hers but couldn’t manage the rest and certainly wasn’t able to manage mine too.The bill came to £37.60 which my friend paid on her card. I said that sounded rather high and had a look through the receipt while she was making the payment. I had expected the food to be a bit pricey but I was quite shocked by the £3.50 charge for a diet coke. The coffee was £3.95 for an Americano and £4.25 for the Cappuccino, neither of which had been freshly brewed. I must say I begrudge paying such a high price for a coffee and then being given a biscuit I didn’t even want. I would much rather pay less for the the drink and not have the biscuit, however these charges were as advertised so I didn’t complain.I did notice however that we had been overcharged for the chips. The advertised price for the sandwich was £8.25 but our receipt showed 2 charges of £9.50 for char grilled veg with chips and we had then been charged for the additional bowl of chips which we hadn’t finished.I pointed this out and expected a polite apology and adjustment to the bill however instead the bar tender was extremely rude and asked why we hadn’t told them about this earlier. My friend told him that we had actually mentioned the chips to the waitress when checking that we had received the correct food. Still no apology was made. We were told that we couldn’t have a refund because he would need to get the manager to do this. We both politely asked him to please get the manager then. After a few minutes the manager arrived and we explained the situation. He told us he would refund the money for the chips but still offered no apology. We walked away from there feeling very upset and angry with the staff in the hotel. We’d had such a lovely lunch and were in a really good mood when we went to pay so it was a real shame that such a minor issue should cause the staff to be so rude to us. Needless to say, despite the enjoyable food, we didn’t leave a tip and are unlikely to return to or recommend this venue.

We have been to this hotel every year for the past four years and last weeks visit was the best. There has been a noticeable improvement in the attitude of the staff. All were very helpful, friendly and positive. Everything went smoothly, from check-in to checkout. We felt that there must have been a change in management. The breakfast buffet was fine, we did not take any other meals in the hotel so cannot comment. The room was very clean and the housekeeping was efficient. On the downside we did find the room too hot because of poor ventilation; the window only opened a fraction. Also the noise insulation is perhaps not the best. On the upside though the location is great, parking is included, a ten minute walk to Folly Bridge and, if you are a runner, you can get onto the towpath and have a lovely run for as many miles as you want and, best of all, it is flat!Overall a good place to stay in Oxford but I would say this is a 3.5 star hotel aspiring for four.

We came back here again, as the facilities ( Pool , training room etc.) are excellent & a short walk to the center of town. Our room was great, the same as last time. The hotel is spread over large grounds & has a variety of wildlife around it, which gives you a feeling of being in the country.having said that, the room, was a long walk from reception & the lift was out of order.Have read previously, that other guests had the same problem, so next time we are back, will be take a ball of string to help us find our way back to our room !

We booked a night away to have a relaxing time in Oxford, thought we would treat ourselves to an expensive luxury night stay, our Deluxe room was over £350 with breakfast. We checked in and straight away asked for a credit card, I didn't want to pay on a credit card only on a debit card as they wanted to take £400 off the card then credit back when we paid. I refused this so had to pay on a debit card to be told I would have to pay for everything when we ordered, so could not put anything on the room.We went to our room which was in another building, at first the room looked nice however it was not very clean due to cobwebs and dust, several cracks in the walls and paintwork on the door, the bath and sink/toilet waste leaked onto the floor. The pillow was split on the seam. The bed did not seem to be made correctly. Due to travelling we were both very tired we noticed they had left a note in our room mentioning a turn down service between 8&9pm, so we went for dinner and stayed out until just after 9pm to allow turn down service, this wasn't carried out at all.We ate in the restaurant which was very disappointing, we ordered drinks and our meal, the starter arrived before our drinks!, the standard of meal was no better than a pub chain standard, the halloumi was not cooked correctly. It was rubbery & squeaky and the dessert appeared just to be a pre made frozen desert. We ordered cappuccino that wasn't hot, the waitress who was very good replied that she would replace it but it may still be cold as it just comes out of a machine, I don't expect this in a hotel costing this much. The bar staff that served us struggled to understand when we asked if they had any different flavours of tonic water, I feel that it is not unreasonable to expect staff in an English Hotel to understand English. From all the hotels I have stayed in throughout the world, I feel that I have never had such bad value as at this hotel. I shall certainly never stay in a Four Pillars hotel again.

This is a splendid hotel in close reach of the city but feels as though you are in the country. Room was not big but very well prepared, good bathroom and shower with lovely toiletries. It was nice to have an iron and ironing board in the room. Breakfast was wonderful, vast range of fresh fruit, full choice of cooked food with a selection of pastries. Nice bar area with an outdoor space we were able to make use of. The walk down to the river and along to the city was lovely. Staff all excellent and very helpful. I had a problem with safe which was rectified immediately. I would thoroughly recommend it for a stay in Oxford.

Spent a full day at this hotel meeting customers, very good service from the bar/lounge staff and also ended up eating dinner here as I was there very late, very good quality food. Would certainly use this location as a base to meet customers in the future when I am next in the area.

Do you want to visit a hotel with a HOT room with no ventilation except if you're early & lucky to get a small tiny computer fan? Then perfect place! You want defrosted food heated in the microwave? Then go for it. You want to support a company who force their employees to work even when ill then thats your den. A bottle of still water will cost you £5. Thats not a joke. No AC in most rooms. Very unkind to kids. No highchairs no respect and no professionalism. Business men who are visiting walk out tired & exhausted due to no sleep because if the heat, noise caused by ventilators etc and lack of ventilation/fresh air in most rooms. No mobile reception at all! Wifi is free but weak. Atleast a hundred people will be using it so good luck! I'd go travel lodge instead. Atleast it'll be worth the money.

Reception is small and only one person on the desk so check in was slow for us. There is no soap in the gents toilet by reception. I don't mean the soap had run out I mean ther is no soap which is not good for a supposed 4 star hotel. Our room was comfortable and clean with the exception of the towel rail which had quite a bit of dust on the rungs. Surprised by a mini bar that had complimentary alcoholic and soft drinks for the 1st use. No problem getting off to sleep but unfortunately got woken up both mornings by people talking as they walked past our room. Sound proofing needs to be sorted as it is impossible to stop people talking and why should you. The wife got woken in the night by the mini bar fridge switching on.The hotel is in a good location close to the city.We didn't eat here so cannot comment on the food. I would say why pay £15.95 for a breakfast when you can go into town and get a good breakfast for a fraction of the price.

Booked a table for lunch for seven people four weeks ahead of date. When we arrived no such reservation had been recorded. A group of three small round tables were put together to appease us. Service poor, risotto luke warm. Our bill was slapped on the table before we had a chance to decide we wanted it, we were going to order coffees. Added to this, I should comment on the difficulty my sister had with her wheelchair in the disabled toilet, the room was very small she said.

The room was great, with a really good shower. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent, with great service. I'd highly recommend this place and would definitely revisit if in the area.
