I guess I’m going to have to recalibrate my expectations. £14 for a breakfast consisting of 2 halves of a tomato, a soggy mushroom, a cup of beans, two small bits of bacon, a rather solid hash brown and two thin sausages. Oh and a coffee thrown in. Sausages were tasty enough but the rest was average at best. To me the rather large pieces of tomato were plate fillers. I also got a roll rather than the sourdough on offer. But roll was too floury.

The best full English we've had, and we have many many full Englishes. Thick bacon, very tasty sausages, perfectly poached bright orange egg yolk, soft black pudding, Herby crispy hash brown and soft sourdough bread. Can't wait to come back.

Very clean with efficient staff. Tables not jammed together and plenty of light. The potato and leek soup seemed out of a tin and the pancakes were thin doughy and rubbery. Nothing like an American pancake. Chips were ok.

We suspect that, like many cafes and restaurants in the Lake District, there are problems recruiting staff. The cafe was reasonably busy and the staff were working extremely hard to but customers were having to wait for some considerable time to be seated. We only called for drinks which were OK although m6 Americano could have been hotter. Oswald’s is certainly popular and I have to say the full English breakfast looked delicious!

We arrived too late for anything hot but hoped coffee and cake would put us on for our onward journey. They only had pre-packed gluten-free tarts on offer for coeliacs. A homemade cake similar to the ‘normal’ cakes would have been lovely. They had a very poor/non-existent selection downstairs too. The coffee was excellent.

Came here for breakfast on a Sunday in April. My mate had the full English (with extra portion of haggis) which came with a free tea/coffee if ordered before 11am. I had the sausage and bacon bun with extra potato rosti. The quality of all the ingredients was very good (as you be expected from Cranstons) and was possible the best quality breakfast you’ll get in Penrith. Only trouble was my mate had to cancel his Sunday lunch he’d booked with his wife later that day as he was too stuffed after his breakfast. He ended up in the bad books but that’s not Cranston’s fault!

Lovely food with a lovely view. Came and the cafe was quite busy so I had a short wait, which was absolutely fine. Seated after about 5 mins. Order was quickly taken and it arrived at a good temperature in good time! I had the breakfast bap which is just enough to see me through. The latte came with some lovely coffee art on top! All in all a very professional outfit and I would recommend

We stopped here twice on our way to & from the Cumbrian coast. Both times we were seated quickly, did have to wait a fair amount of time to order our drinks. First stop was a Saturday afternoon ordered a peppermint tea and a brownie which was delicious. Second stop was a Saturday morning ordered a latte & hot chocolate they took ages to arrive, when they did my husbands hot chocolate was only lukewarm and the coffee wasn't that great. I useful stop but not somewhere I would go regularly.

We visited as a group of 10, which may have explained a bit of a wait for food, but when it was served it was really good. Between us we ordered various breakfast butties, couple of full English, eggs and a scone, so we sampled most of the menu! Service was friendly and helpful, with needing a bigger table, highchairs etc. Fantastic coffee too.Only downside was the toilets, which were grubby and not well maintained.

Meeting with colleague before visiting a client. Great place to catch a bap and a coffee.Friendly welcome and able to select a table. Order quickly taken, tea and coffee brought almost by return. However the baps took some time we were almost finished our drinks before they arrived. The cafe was not busy but the food took some time, not good if this is happening when quiet, what would it be like when busy. The baps when they arrived, were great, well presented and very tasty. When you are looking for a quick stop off, you don’t want to have to chase your food. I have been here a number of times over the years. Today, I went for lunch. Not busy. Got seated quickly. Downhill from there i'm afraid. Service was very slow. My wife ordered soup, I ordered eggs on avocado. When it eventually arrived (25mins), both were cold!. Sent the soup back. I ate my eggs and finished then went looking for the soup!! After a much disgruntled waitress eventually turned back up again, the soup was delivered.Menu has shrunk in terms of selection! Price has rocketed. Come on, please sort this out

Visited for breakfast, not very busy when we arrived despite at least 4 staff being on ‘the shop floor’ our order was slow to be taken, after our order was taken we waited 20 minutes for our breakfasts to arrive, upon my food arriving I started to butter my toast and seen some plastic looking film on top of one of my fried eggs, upon further inspection this was actually plastic cling film wrap which for some odd reason was in top of the egg, with a rather large pool of grease around it!! Usually Cranston’s eggs are fried very cleanly and there is not an excess of fat swimming around. I informed a staff member about this and she took the food away, no offer of taking back my husbands food, I waited and waited probably another 10 minutes at which time my husband was nearly finished his breakfast when mine arrived back no apology about the plastic on the food no apologies for the wait nothing!! The only item to be replaced was the said egg with the plastic, I know this because the toast I had started to butter was still on the plate with the now melted butter and one of the slices of toast was Joe rather more burned in the edge.My breakfast was nothing other than ok as I have previously said a lot of fat in the plate which is not something that I would not expect, nobody came back to check if my food was ok and no body asked when my husband came to pay full price about the food. All in all not a very enjoyable experience in Cafe Oswald’s and I would probably say will hinder a return visit and I do visit often!!

Visited here with my mother who walks with a stick and can't stand for long periods. We arrived up in the lift, there was several empty tables but as approaching one we were told all tables were taken and was a queue as we turned around could see people standing at opposite side of the lift exit down the stairs. We went and stood by the queue but unable to join end of queue as down stairs so had an awkward wait at top of stairs. We then got showed to a table that was quite big with seats opposite sides this proved awkward for my mother as we couldn't have a conversation as she's hard of hearing. Nothing was explained so didn't know if table service or to order at till. Food was nice but I feel slightly overpriced. Trying to pay the bill was awkward and we waited some time by the till next to the lift, could of actually easily got in the lift and probably left without paying had we not been honest people. Some small improvements could easily solve these issues to make a better experience for older, disabled customers.

I think a couple of people visiting in Jul 19 have been a bit picky. To put this in context - Oswald's is in the first floor of the Cranston's food hall on the south side of Penrith. It is convenient for the motorway (better food, better prices) so gets quite a bit of passing trade, but is popular with locals, too. I have been in several times and have never been disappointed. Attentive staff, good food and a good atmosphere. This week I needed to do some work in there on a computer, and the staff directed me to a table near to a socket - good stuff. Nothing too much trouble. Will definitely go again.

We stopped here for breakfast on our way on holiday. I decided to have the rare bit and my husband had the full breakfast. The food was very good but I thought the rarebit was on the expensive side. The full breakfast was excellent value however. The restaurant was clean, light and airy and the service was good.

We stopped here with a group of friends for some breakfast - which was absolutely delicious. The full English was a great combination of really tasty ingredients, and service was very friendly too. Not inexpensive but definitely worth it.

Came here for lunch last week and was very impressed. The layout of the restaurant is very spacious, even though it was quite busy (Saturday lunchtime with heatwave) with lots of sunlight through the big open windows at the top.

Fantastic place. The foodhall downstairs is amazing and the cafe is so much better than the usual motorway stop off.

Yesterday we had a very delightful breakfast at this (upstairs) cafe. The staff was attentive and helpful and the food was of high quality. We particularly loved the sourdough bread.

Lovely café, great food and excellent, friendly service. Worth a short detour if heading up/down M6. Fresh food, great coffee and an excellent shop. Glad I found this and will definitely visit again.

Visited here before and have not always been impressed. Today we had jacket potatoes with salad leaves and various toppings, potatoes not exactly piping hot and the salad garnish was fit for the rabbit hutch. £7.95 was too much would've got a better lunch for less money in a cafe in the town.

My wife has come to this cafe a number of times with her "Pudding Club" with the girls from work and wanted me to try it! Today was that day. I had pulled pork, my wife had pulled ham and my daughter had cheese on toast, the best I've ever eaten. The staff are friendly, the food is lovely, the coffee is excellent. My daughter was happy, she was handed colouring pencils and something to colour. I will definitely come again.

We called in here on our way to Keswick on a recommendation from family. My wife is gluten free but when we checked out their website for GF lunch options we were amazed. Everything I could eat was also done GF. When we arrived (last Sunday) it was pretty quite so we got a table straight away. Staff were friendly, prices reasonable and I can recommend the eggs with avocado on sourdough bread.....wonderful!! Well done café Oswald for being so GF friendly.

Excellent family breakfast, quality food, great atmosphere and the service was spot on! The manager Joe took our order and we were impressed with the kids choice being able to choose what they liked. We left a very happy and satisfied family.

Situated above Cranston’s Food Hall on the outskirts of Penrith, Cafe Oswald’s is a very smart & comfortable cafe. Friendly staff, table service & very nice food at reasonable prices. After 3pm there is a coffee & cake offer at only £3 which is superb.

We stopped here instead of Gretna outlet. Good range on menu but only one type of soup on offer which none of us liked, a pity. Friendly staff, food was good enough maybe overpriced for what it was.

Lovely cafe we both had the special of the day. I had the Chicken breast with haggis wrapped in bacon served with mash and seasonal veg plus a lovely sauce. My husband had the steak burger which was very good as well served with skinny chips and slaw.

We popped in here 15 minutes before they stopped serving food. The waitress was super friendly. I apologised for us coming in just before closing but it wasn't a problem . We both had the all day breakfast. The quality of all the ingredients was wonderful. All fresh too. No sitting under heat lamps for ages. Will certainly be back. Thanks so much.

Tried to have breakfast here on a wintry Saturday morning. Oh dear. The so called sourdough toast was not toasty – just bread with a bit of a singe to the crust. The accompanying bowl of baked beans struggled to reach any known classification of tepid or lukewarm.

Visited this wee gem based on Trip Advisor reviews. 2 full English breakfasts including toasted sourdough bread, butter and big pot of tea was £16. Cumberland Sausages and bacon were top quality and eggs were done to perfection. Accompanied by mushrooms, tomatoes and beans. All hot and tasty. Not a scrap left on either of our plates. Service was quick and with a smile. This will be our pit stop on future visits south of the border. They have a fab farm shop on ground floor. Could have spent hours there!

Visited on a Friday lunch time. The cafe was busy but the staff were attentive and very helpful. I had the gluten free ham sandwich which was served on a lovely soft bun. The other lunch was a pulled pork sandwich on toasted bread. Very good value.

Stayed here to break our journey from Central Scotland to the Peak District. Had a very pleasant chalet type room at the rear of the property with easy access. Enjoyed a drink and an evening meal in the bar with our wee dog. We both had the sirloin steak with was generous in proportion and quite tasty.Staff friendly as were the locals. Would definitely return.

We dined in Bustro 1871 as part of a short break holiday at the Appleby Manor Hotel. What a lovely break this was. Our first after the Spring and Summer lockdown. The food was really good and the waiters attentive. Appleby Manor itself is a delightful hotel full of old world charm. We are returning there again for my wife's birthday in October. I shall again dine in Bistro 1871 as well as sampling the gourmet restaurant at the hotel on our second night.
