Went for lunch on a Saturday. Cosy, small bar area so don't expect your conversations to be private, but it also makes for a nice atmosphere! Thoroughly enjoyed a cheese, leek and potato pie, properly encased in pastry and another of our party said their sausages and mash were excellent. Ploughman's was a little uninspired though. Only one dessert was had - I was hoping for a delicious crumble but although nice, would have benefited from being cooked in the dish, rather than it being the standard fruit mix, with crumble topping added just prior to serving. Really friendly staff though, and a lovely setting.

Don't usually leave reviews but making the effort to do so for the Ostrich Inn because (a) the food and service were excellent (very welcoming, child- and dog-friendly, prompt service, very tasty food, and lovely cosy surrounds); and (b) the '1 of 1 restaurant in Newland' does not fairly reflect that this is in fact head and shoulders above many of the other local eateries in surrounding villages. We ate at several of them over the course of a family holiday to the Forest of Dean at the end of Oct 24 and would not hesitate to recommend this one as the best of the bunch. The only downside is limited parking but there's not much that they can do about that!

It’s four things: the place (building dates from 1694); the food (simply superb - we had ox cheek and chicken and mushroom pie - the chef must be a God!); the beer (local, excellent); and the staff (friendly and attentive). There’s also a lovely open fire.

We stop at the campsite just down the road from the Ostrich most years & always make a point of going for either a drink on a Friday night or Sunday lunch this year. Never disappoints the food has always been beautifully presented and importantly hot! Friendly staff & good local feel to the place, a proper well run country pub with great food & great beer/cider/gin ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Despite the building work the Ostrich is still open. In August 2024 the pub was getting a new roof. Despite this they are still open. Good selection of real ales. Butty Bach at £5.50 a pint not bad at all. Food expensive but good. Lovely garden at the back.

Lovely old pub with lots of character. Dog friendly with plenty of dog treats and water bowls about. We were there for lunch. We chose from main menu and specials board. It was fantastic food and brilliant service. Starter and mains for 2 plus 1 pint bitter and large bottle of fizzy water the bill came to £70.00 which we felt was totally worth it. Only down side is thst there is no car park and parking on street is very tight indeed.

Booked a table for Sunday lunch.arrived &walked into the bar area where we purchased a drink.the man(would say gentleman but he doesn't deserve that) clearly couldn't be bothered to even engage with his customer or take his eyes of his screen although asking us what we wanted .....its not the way I would interact with customers. He has absolutely no customer service experience or he clearly didn't want to be there. We were shown to our table but by then we were so put off by his attitude we left our drinks untouched and left.luckily we managed to book into the globe Inn in Alvington where nothing was to much trouble &beautiful food. I'm glad we left everything though it costs us for the drinks we did not drink

Excellent pub and food. Eleven of us visited this pub for some lunch after completing a hike as part of a walking group. We hadn’t booked but were warmly greeted and given menus. We ordered various different meals which arrived together. Dietary requirements were no problem, especially for celiacs. The food was delicious. When Kathryn was running the Ostrich and doing the cooking we used to go a long way out of our way to eat there as her dishes were superb, especially the smokies and the delicious risottos/risotti. It was our favourite and we were very sad to learn that Kathryn passed away last year. We visited earlier this year hoping that her recipes would have been passed on and still available, but sadly the cuisine is now bang-average pub-grub by comparison. Reluctantly crossed this one off our list.

The pub is attractive and the staff were friendly. I met a friend for lunch, we both chose the ploughman’s. It arrived, and was some bread, two pickled onions, ham, a little salad (no dressing), some sliced apple, cheese, a tiny pot of chutney and a single small piece of wrapped butter. The bit that disappointed me the most was the cheese; it was obviously mass-produced, when I have a ploughman’s in a country pub you expect rind-on cheese proper cheese. The bread wasn’t fresh but wasn’t bad. What are you supposed to do with one small piece of butter on three big pieces of bread? The ham was nice and the chutney too was excellent even if there was so little of it. But at £15.50 for a ploughman’s you expect proper cheese and some dressing on your salad. The French would laugh at you if you gave them undressed salad, so the Ostrich chef should know better. I won’t be going back.

On holiday in the area and booked lunch at The Ostrich as it had such good reviews. The pub looks promising from the outside, set in the beautiful village, opposite the magnificent church. Firstly the pub itself is in need of a good clean, the carpet and bar area are beyond grubby. The garden itself is truly terrible. A border full of weeds, tubs dried up and dead. The patio again full of weeds, needs sweeping and clearing of clutter and pots of dead flowers. No sign of any pride taken in the presentation of this pub which is a shame as it's setting is glorious. We'd already ordered our food unfortunately as things did not bode well. The lamb was an unappetising mass of fat, the gravy congealed, served on a stone cold plate, yuck. The pork undercooked, gravy granual gravy...not good again served on a cold plate. Totally inedible. This isn't a moan for moaning sake, this place could be really lovely with a manager/owner who made an effort to step back and take note of the state of the place. We do not recommend. Two stars are for the young lady in the bar and the young man serving, and the setting.

I've visited The Ostrich a few times and my most recent visit this weekend was so fantastic I had to write a review. As a coeliac, it's often difficult to find restaurants that can guarantee no cross contamination when it comes to gluten, but not only were the staff totally educated on what I could/couldn't eat, the food was absolutely phenomenal. Hugely appreciated the fact that they use separate fryers for the chips and that two of the desserts were 100% gluten free. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic. Can't wait to visit again.

Booked here as we were staying in the area for the weekend. Wasn't a huge choice on the menu. We had a starter of soup and a mains of pie and chips. Soup was nice but a little too salty. Pie was delicious with loads of meat and came with plenty of chips. However, nothing else, which is very unusual. You would normally expect some form of vegetables? For the price that was very odd and a little disappointing. However, we were sat by the fire and that was pleasant and the two young girls working there were good. Pub had a lovely ambience but I imagine if you were not by the fire it is quite chilly. All in all this was a nice experience, just a shame about the incomplete dinner.

Crammed to the rafters, very very busy hardly a space between tables so felt pretty uncomfortable. It appeared that only two young girls were working front of house and did a good job considering how busy it was although we did have to wait at least 20 minutes to order drinks. The food came out and was ok but nothing exceptional and we did have to ask for extra vegetables as only a few brought out originally. Me and my partner were very excited about visiting the ostrich. We were hyped up by the reviews and a visit from some relatives. Unfortunately it didnt live up to expectations. We were positioned in a narrow window sill in the dining area. Other customers had placed left over cutlery, plates, jugs and coffe mugs on the table as the bar staff did not have the capacity to remove them themselves. We had to deliver them to the bar for them.At no point did we get table service and we were never informed that it was service at the bar. We went to the bar after a 15 mins of waiting and our order was taken, however we did not receive our drinks for 45 minutes. We ordered food when we went to the bar and that was delivered without knifes and forks, which we had to scavenge from around the pub.Ultimately the service was poor, but the 2 young girls who were responsible for our service were over worked and we dont hold them responsible at all.Management should of been available on a busy night to help orchestrate proceedings and manage the flow of customers. This would have allowed the workload to be managed effectively. Will not return.

We booked 4 weeks in advance but the booking was never recorded, however pplite staff found us a table. Later wevoverheard another couple met the same problem. At the time of booking I was assured a high quality vegetarian and vegan meal. What we got was plates of seriously overcooked, mushy rissotto rice, overloaded with salt and laden with an unnecessary amount of truffle oil, in fact swimming in it. Ok, some decent mushrooms were thrown in but we have eaten mushroom risotto countless times and this was the worst ever. We were hungry and tackled the meal which was hot thank goodness. We are not in the habit of complaining or wasting food but on hindsight we should have sent it back straight away and found somewhere else to eat.The beer garden looked uninviting and the toilet area was poor too☹

This isn't my first visit, the last some two years ago, but it'll probably be my last. All my previous visits coincided with rainy day visits to the local wonder, the "Cathedral of the Forest" , the church of All Saints opposite, and with memories of top tucker and good real ales, I encouraged my companions to enter this pub. Something has changed, and after a single drink each, and a bowl of chips, we were on our way. I am the first to admit that my bi-annual patronage is not going to mean much, and the Ostrich is sufficiently rural to justify its premium prices, but we left feeling just a little underwhelmed, and overcharged, although the larger bar area was well-stocked with visitors.

A lovely mix of drinkers and diners. We both had couple of pints of local ales. Well kept beers. Followed by wild boar and mash. Absolutely lovely and lots of it. Great service and will come back

A look at the menu prices and you can see the pub is aiming at a "gastro" pub audience ....it is a shame that the food is only mediocre

We booked ahead for this inn, having a family of seven to cater for. We were delighted with the food, the service and the compliance with the Covid-19 requirements. The staff were friendly, welcoming both our dogs. and the menu wide enough to cater for seven different tastes. Parking is the only problem being curbside so get there with time to spare.

This was the first time that myself and my partner had been out to a restaurant since lockdown and were unsure what to expect, especially from a quaint local village pub such as this one. The Ostrich Inn was recommended as one of the places to eat by the owners of our holiday cottage. We booked in over the phone - which was a miracle as we had terrible phone signal and we were very impressed that they could hear us! Upon arriving it was clear that the pub and its owners had gone to great lengths to put measures in place to make the place COVID secure including signing in and staff wearing face shields, however the place still had a great atmosphere. We were promptly shown to our table and the pub still held its cosy country charm. There were great menu choices and we very much enjoyed the fish cakes and sausage dishes with generous portions! Service was prompt and the food was great. The desserts were pretty special as well as we enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding and renowned bread and butter pudding! Extremely reasonably priced given the quality of the food and would not hesitate recommending it to others. Thank you for a really great visit, myself and my partner felt safe and still enjoyed the eating out experience.

We were camping locally and came across this lovely old pub in the small hamlet of Newland in the Forest of Dean. It had only reopened the previous day due to lockdown.Despite its isolated location the place was buzzing the food and beer were amazing and the staff were delightful. All the ingredients for a great pub/restaurant.

Sadly this is the first time that we have tried to raise concerns with a manager or leave a poor trip advisor review. We were recommended The Ostrich by the owners of our holiday cottage and booked in for tonight and had been really looking forward to coming. When we arrived we were shown to a table in a gloomy dark corner and my teenage son joked whether they would notice we were there and it appears no they didn’t. It took over 20 minutes for the waitress to come and take our drinks order then another 10 for them to arrive. At 45 minutes we were giving up all hope of ordering our food when they eventually noticed we hadn’t had our order taken. The waitress assured us that there wouldn’t be any further delays. We also ordered another drink for one of our sons. We were then quite impressed that our food started to arrive after only a 15 minute wait with two beef wellingtons being brought to the table. 5 minutes later however rather than the remaining food being brought the waitress came to take the beef wellingtons away as they were apparently for a different table. She asked us if we had eaten any as she wanted to give them to the other customers despite having seen us touch the plates when she had brought them (not sure that this meets Covid regulations). We had however tried them and my husband had intended on sending his back as the jus was cold (did taste nice though). So with all the delays as my son 25 minutes on still hadn’t received his drink and an hour and 15 minutes after arriving and seeing customers who had arrived after us having had starters, mains and several rounds of drinks we asked to see the manager. Unfortunately when she came to our table she had no interest in hearing our concerns, made no apology and just blamed everything on implementing new systems for Covid and her manner was arrogant making us feel we were in the wrong for complaining. At that point we decided we didn’t want to stay and that we were going to go. She left our table at that point. We waited for a few minutes for a waitress to appear so we could pay for our drinks but none did and we had had enough of waiting so left.

A group of us went for dinner and a catch up and the food was truly excellent, one of the best meals we have had a in a long time. We had a cassoulet and a beef wellington, both were amazing and huge, which did not put us off having a dessert which was also very very good. Service was very friendly and the inn has that old fashioned cosy pub feeling. If that is the sort of dining feeling you are going for we reckon this is best in the local area.

My partner and I have been staying nearby for a couple of evenings and wanted to try out a good spot to eat. We had the Ostrich recommend to us by the person who owned the Airbnb we were staying at. I have to say, they served one of the best pub meals I have ever had. If you're in the area, I strongly recommend it. The staff were kind, the locals chatted with is and the food was amazing. Great for dinner. Be warned it's not huge so be prepared to have a drink while you wait for a spot to sit.

I phoned ahead to check if the pub was open?..."yes, it is from 6.30pm"...can we bring our dog? "Yes you can."...do we need to book a table?..."no, just turn up and we'll look after you"....and they did. Lovely welcome, fab atmosphere and delicious food. Thank you for honestly being a dog friendly pub (not a dog tolerant pub)...including a sausage for Bentley on our way out.

Popped in for a light lunch, and fancied the look of the plougmans lunch: 'half a loaf with three Welsh cheeses. Very glad we shared it! Lovely hot granary bread, three generous slices of lovely cheese, tasty chutney and nice mixed leaves. Best we have ever had by a mile. Outstanding choice of real ales, atmospheric old pub interior complete with open log fire. They even laid on a Welsh Terrier to look at. Real gem of a pub.

A proper country and community pub. The locals make you feel very welcome and the fire and conversation in the bar gives the place a great feel. The menu is very well put together - not so much you cannot choose but so much variety you have to think - I suspect much of it local. The beer choice is very good - excellent Budweiser Budvar on draft and a number of local cask ales. Perhaps one area of improvement is to assess if there are too many ales. I had two different pints, both were way past their best and I mentioned this to the barman who didn’t seem to take my feedback on board, and I work in the brewing industry and was only trying to help. As a result, I left much of my last pint. Nevertheless, a great pub, very dog friendly and one well worth searching out.

We booked for an evening meal on the 23rd, two days before Christmas. We were staying locally for the Christmas period. This was a real find - open log fire, cosy and warm, fantastic atmosphere. The menu was impressively comprehensive and all our courses were served quickly. Our compliments to the chef, our meal was wonderful. Very helpful and very friendly staff. Couldn’t fault it. Congratulations Kathryn, full marks all round.

We booked for lunch today, Sunday 15th Dec. Even though the restaurant was fully booked they reserved us tables in the bar. Just one look at the menu blew us away with the options available such as wild boar, beef wellington and other great options. Service was excellent from the very start, nothing was too much trouble despite us being 8 adults and seven children from 2 to 12. The quality of the food and portion side was absolutely 5 stars fantastic. It made our Christmas trip so special. I cannot recommend this venue highly enough and thank all of the staff so much. The chef came out to check we were all happy and was so pleased with our feedback. Well done.

Stuck a pin in a ( google) map to find a breakfast one hour away from leaving holiday accommodation. What a find. Interesting decor showed off the home made cakes and savouries whilst we waited a few minutes for a table. Breakfast avocado with poached eggs on sourdough bread, sun dried tomatoes, chorizo and pea shoots was divine and substantial. Staff were friendly and obviously enjoyed serving and cooking as much as we enjoyed eating. Make a detour. Worth every mile and every penny.

We visited over Easter and loved all the little chocolate eggs hidden around the cafe - kept the kids entertained whilst they waited for their food! Lovely cafe with a great menu. We ordered a range of different food but loved the halloumi burger and cheeseburger especially. It’s great that dogs are allowed in this cafe but as we don’t own a dog, even better that there are two areas - one for dogs and one where dogs aren’t allowed. Service was quick and with a smile, reasonably priced too for restaurant quality food. The only improvement needed is the toilet area - could do with a update!

I don’t often go into bakery shops but we were visiting Driffield today and spotted that there was a small seating area inside at the front of the shop and a larger area further in. We were ready for coffee and a snack The shop is obviously very popular as I had to join the queue but it gave me the opportunity to look at what was on offer. Vastly superior quality to what is available in other chain bakery shops and very well priced. I don’t eat bread but the sandwiches were definitely calling to me!😹
