Oscar"s Wine Bar & Bistro in York

Don’t bother. The food is so bland, I enjoy seasoned food and Oscar’s does not. I wish I’d read reviews prior to dining, we ordered chicken which was slightly pink - not as pink as in the previous review however. We also only realised after leaving that they failed to give us onion rings on both mains that we ordered, both of which were supposed to have them as a side dish. There are so many better restaurants in the town centre.

Writing this review at 1 o’clock in the morning from the bathroom because I have food poisoning from the meal I had from here this evening. Firstly, the chicken came out pinkish but the waitress reassured me that it was the seasoning that causes the colour. Luckily, I had only eating a little bit of it since it made me feel uncomfortable. Regardless I ate around the chicken and had the salad to which I found a small pebble. When we told the waitress she told us she would take it off the bill. That was the last we saw of anyone. No one came back to check on us. We had to go to the bar to pay. Also my mother had the chili con carne which tasted awful. Too sweet. The waitresses were kind when we saw them but after complaining they vanished. The man who took our payment apologised again but looked really unbothered. We even tipped because we felt bad about complaining. Usually I would let this type of thing go but as I am in so much pain, I’m annoyed. (Pictures are below)

We have been visiting York for many years now and always make time to visit Oscars, we went again yesterday and the food was incredible, the waiting staff were very attentive. They brought our very hungry toddlers meal out really quick and everything about the place was great! Thank you, we can't wait to visit again next time!

Excellent as usual, visit as a retired group three- four times a year .

Food took a long time to arrive (>45 minutes)

Food was good, had Philly cheesesteak sandwich, not much cheese though. Service was slow, and it was cold in there.

We passed last night and thought the place looked inviting Didn't Google prior to visit so it was just passing by The food was amazing Burgers were amazing all 3 different ones by sons and husband had lasagne as gorgeous ♥️ Little gem of a place so well worth a try

I ordered chicken gyros and it was cold I waited for waitress t o ask how our meals were but she never did.i didn't complain as I didn't want to spoil our guests night it was my birthday and was disappointed otherwise it was a good night

We had an amazing lunch, served by Bibi. She welcomed us with a smile. She was friendly and professional. The restaurant looked clean and cosy with warm ambience and vibrant decor. We would recommend Oscar's to our friends. Thank you.

The food tasted good but was cold, service was shocking! Orderd our food before new tables had sat down and they still got their good before us, very slow service, there is a baord explaining that food can take uo to 45mins, our food took over an hour and a half. The staff omitted an entire meal from our table of 4! Not much of an apology nor communication with us, was made to feel like we was the inconvenience, after the table had finished eating the missing meal came out after being paraded around the restaurant because the staff didn't know what table it belonged to, resulting in extremely late and cold food! Also requested condiments that never came.

Embarrassingly poor. Arrived shortly after opening, told food would be 30 minutes. 2 consecutive pints of Blue Moon returned with barely an acknowledgment of the fault, despite them being visibly not right! (Minor fact but no orange either but served in a glass that says it should be!) 50 minutes later, no food despite it just been halloumi fries, garlic bread and wings so no real prep needed but 3 tables around us, who arrived after us, all being served similar. Told them we needed to leave, no apology, just told they were going to be starting the order soon. Oscar’s used to be our favourite quirky place to eat in York but sadly it’s now more like a disappointing chain restaurant. Sadly not worth a visit as it offers no more than much more efficient places in York!

Service was very good, the food was also good Portion size made it a good value meal. We can certainly recommend it.

Shocking service. Arrived at 17:10 Didn’t get our food until 18:10 got our starter with our mains which we didn’t ask for but food was amaze but wouldn’t return as the service was shocking and we ordered basic food and took nearly a hour to arrive. Not impressed

Place was fairly busy, so I guess you have to show a little leeway, but we came in and waited for what seemed like a lifetime before anyone even acknowledged our existence. We almost had to stand in front of one of the staff in order to get them to tell us if we could sit down. They then went to ask the lady behind the bar for her opinion of that. Eventually, they decided that we could sit at the table in the middle of the room, pulling two of the four free 4 seater tables together for our party of 5 people. We then sat for over 20 minutes without being asked or offered anything. Eventually, my wife got up and took 5 menus from the stack near the door, so we could at least be ready with our order when the waiting staff got around to seeing us. We placed our drinks order, which was subsequently messed up but later corrected, then we placed our food order, which again, took a long while to arrive, but to be fair to the chef, when the food arrived, we were pleasantly surprised. All of our food (about 3 or 4 different choices) were delicious, piping hot and very well presented. Absolutely full marks to the chef for producing such great food in a place where clearly everyone else just isn't in the right job. I travel a lot and eat in a very wide variety of establishments but it's not difficult to please me, I don't expect miracles. We had some German friends with us and I was actually embarrassed to show them that That level of customer service actually exists in the UK. Thank god the food was good, or I'd have been looking for a substantial discount on the bill. The place itself looks nice, I just hope whoever manages this place reads this and takes some action that will bring the customer service up to the level one could expect from a location in the centre of a City like York and that a chef such as they have deserves to serve his food.

Great staff, terrible food. Chicken burgers with the gravy and onion rings are totally bland and the chicken I assume is some mass bought frozen chicken rubbish, a bit slimy in texture,not good, not good at all Kids fish fingers...avoid, it's formed fish, our little one wouldn't touch them

Disappointing the only baby changing table was in the female toilets.

I am always impressed with Oscar’s; we primarily go for cocktails which are always of a good quality and well priced. The staff are always incredibly attentive and it’s a really nice setting.

Restaurant theme is pretty ambiguous ‘generic bistro’ and menu very eclectic. Service was friendly and food was very tasty.

We waited over 20 minutes with no service. had to call server over to take our order. She delivered our appetizer to another table and then brought it to us after it sat at their table for 20 minutes.

The food was fantastic, don't be fooled thinking that a cajun chicken salad is a light bite. Quality was excellent, staff were very friendly when serving but somewhat inattentive, nobody checked that the food was fine, I asked for a drink when my food came, then asked at the bar 10ish minutes later. It came after I had finished my meal after I had concluded that it was not coming. Small observations but in a nice pub style bistro on an early afternoon with only a few covers in, worth mentioning. We will, however, be back.

Absolutely awful. ‘Manager’ was the RUDEST most pretentious, patronising man. No idea how he got the job. Went for my hen do and he ended up trying to start an argument with my mum?!! Shocking

The manager here was very rude and patronising, my merlot came out in a plastic pimms cup with my wine spilled all over it. I simply asked for another glass... not an issue that it would be plastic, just a clean one. Was told ' ill wipe it' and with an horrible attitude....i told him i would prefer another glass and he proceeded to try and pick an argument! He wouldnt change the glass and then walked away saying 'enjoy your plastic' !!! He said he was the manager, this is highly unlikely...or if he is, he needs some serious training in customer service

Service was terrible, ladies toilets were disgusting and the ‘manager’ who clearly needs retraining, was rude, patronising and pretentious.

I have visited here a few times with my 3 year old and partner. Always have lovely staff on and the menu offers lots of choice. Large tasty portions, great value for money. Craig was the perfect host and server to our afternoon.

Such a lovely restaurant in York and the food is always amazing no matter what we order...it was only quiet on Tuesday when we went and the service was a bit slow especially when we asked for the bill but food makes up for it! I live in York but will always bring visiting friends here and always recommend here :) they also do blue light discount even on a weekend :)

Recently popped into Ocars for lunch with my family. Had a nice meal with good service. Worth a try if you’ve never been.

Visitors before a show at the Barbican, one of the best burgers I have had in a long time, double cheese too very tasty burgers and side fries and slaw. Service was exceptional from all staff, rainy day even had a heater near the table.

Was recommended this place for drinks. Had one of the best caipirinha's ever! Loved the interior. Wouldn't say it was somewhere just to drink, more to eat and drink. Food looked good, though. Would go back just for the caipirinha!

Always visit Oscar’s when I’m York as been a favourite of mine for years. Went with my son,the staff were lovely but the food wasn’t…we ordered a 1 starter and a main each and noticed other people eating before us but thought that’s ok,it’s lunchtime...

Visited a week ago, never been before but really lovely atmosphere inside, music was great. The staff were all friendly, helpful and and a good laugh. There was a fair choice of food to choose from, we eventually picked the Lasagne with the side salad. It was a bit of a wait for it but well worth it because it tasted great. They lost a star for having no salad cream, a cardinal sin for me without it on my salad! Lol Prices not too bad, pretty average for York really. Definitely like to visit again sometime.

We had a wonderful meal and great wine. Our waiter, Carl, was absolutely fabulous!!! Friendly, helpful and attentive. We will certainly return to this restaurant.
