Nice pub & restaurant with a good choice of food on the menu . We were served by Rebecca when we visited who was friendly & efficient.

The worst Sunday lunch me and my partner have ever had, Sunday roast, Yorkshire puddings soggy under cooked, vegetables so hard couldn't cut with the knife, roast potatoes black burnt so hard couldn't put a fork in, only decent part of the meal was the horseradish sauce out of a jar safe to say will not be returning, complained but not interested, wish the meal wasn't paid for in adamce as safe to say I wouldn't of paid, would of took one look and walked out I'm a genuine customer,.

Came in a bit ago and had a wonderful time. Staff were helpful and the food was lovely. Spike served us and helped take our food order. Would definitely recommend to locals as a nice spot for some food and a drink or two

Booked a table for 17:45 on Saturday 20th April for 7 people (4 adults 3 children). We arrived and were promptly shown to our table. After ordering our drinks we viewed the menu and made our choices. When we came to place the order we were told that there would be at least one hour wait as there was only one chef. Reluctantly accepting this, 3 of our choices were not available so after revisiting the menu after the first attempt some second choices were not available either. We were all very disappointed as it was becoming a joke, backwards and forwards getting the children to make different choices. We decided to leave and feel that the service provided was not as expected and took our family elsewhere. Such as shame as we wanted to support a local business however this was not to be. Staffing and stock controls need to be seriously addressed.

Good pub with a great beer garden. Decent prices for the area bit much if you’re from out of town like us but I guess that York. Staff were great. Jamie was very welcoming. Good Saturday afternoon

We ordered the Hunters chicken signature dish as we had this before and it was lovely. When the food arrived there were no peas and it was barely warm and the portions were less than our previous visit. On mentioning this,I was told there were no peas and the food was taken away to be re heated. We weren’t offered any alternative to peas. A couple of minutes later the food came back and the chips were hotter but the rest was no different and the chicken was dry. On paying for the food the lady asked how it was and we said we were disappointed. Her response was that she didn’t think it was a good dish and they’d have to check the probes. Then she told us the chef wasn’t in until 1 o’clock! There was no apology and for £26 it was poor value. We certainly won’t be returning.

Popped as we hadn't reserved anywhere in york centre.the food was absolutely amazing hadn't the best fish and chips I have ever had. Only downside was a large group of lads(football team) were loudly swearing all the time we were there

The food is and going to be brilliant and delicious 😋 starters and the drinks are refreshing the was prepared delivery was fast pasted. And delicate placed as I observed.

When they state “family friendly” what they mean is it is a crèche for mothers and screaming babies. Not ideal should you wish a quiet pint. Understaffed during day, which is unfair on the staff member running two bars with customers waiting an inordinate amount of time.

Staff are not friendly at all and made us feel uncomfortable for asking questions about what beers were available and for asking for food that was not brought out with the meals. The first meal came out about 15 minutes before the last meal so we all ended up eating at different times.

Nice pub a bit off the beaten track good prices for the area and all round pleasant experience. Won’t set the world alight but a very good little pub.

Came on a trip when staying in a nearby b&b ! Was busy and lively in there and had a chat to one of the bartenders Imogen, who was friendly and gave some recommendations about York ! Lovely visit

Absolute comedy pub... like faulty towers... absolutely dead and took 10 minutes to get served.... need to employ some staff... Worth a trip if you like waiting and fancy a laugh though...

My wife and I had a great evening at the quiz night, whilst up in York visiting our daughter. We were served at our table by Imogen who was friendly and charming and made us feel really welcome.

Always a treat to visit, lovely atmosphere, and lovely bar staff, especially Imogen who is always helpful and friendly and pours a lovely pint of Guinness, would recommend anyone to stop by.

I hate to do this as I am a local but, far too many times I have come to the quiz night on a Thursday and been utterly disappointed with the food service. The food is always very late, meals never comes complete, I.e. gammon missing, or chicken wings missing. Most of the time this writes off 40% of the menu before you order, so who handles stock/orders? It’s every week and this is food service 101… the food is worlds apart each week, one day the lasagne is ok, the next has a full block of undercooked cheese on top with no meat. AND, imagine, sub-Wetherspoons standard food being £40 for two pints and two meals (see receipt). I want to be honest and state food is given to us with a face on and very little patience, BUT, this is 100% not their fault and only because they’re fighting fires having limited staff and poor food. Last but not least we sent 90% of a meal back and was told no refund because it was mostly eaten. We won’t be coming back now.

Its a place with a good local requlars who mix with sport events & quizzes ect . Awaiting Stonegate to appoint another GM to take it to a level we are used to of have ?

Came to this venue for a meal with some friends and the atmosphere was amazing! Some great music and some great food on offer! We were greeted at the bar with a beaming smile by Jamie who served one hell of a Guinness shamrock and all!

Stellar service as ever from Jamie and city bottled Chelsea what a day! Beers a decent price seen worse like but can’t really complain.

Imogen was very helpful with food and customer service and was happy to put the football on TV when asked.

This is a really lovely pub, love the new decoration, we haven’t been for ages so it was nice to see how it looks now. We ordered some food and it was delicious, I was disappointed to see some complaints about food on here as ours was great, Bella bought us our food over and was really sweet with helping with recommendations and swapping some things out. Overall a lovely place we really enjoyed our evening here

I'm really not sure as to what some people are talking about with regards to their negative reviews. I've been here several times and each time it has been a great experience. I'd understand if you were paying a lot of money for your food/drinks, but that's really not the case here at all. All of the staff are friendly and really make you feel welcome, I don't understand the need for some truly sad (or maybe just lonely?) people to write awful reviews, slating this lovely place. I will continue to come back here as often as I can, you get what you pay for, and what you're paying for in this case, is a lovely time with quality pub food and drinks. 10/10

Lovely experience at The Walnut Tree! I’ve visited plenty of times and the atmosphere is superb! The bar staff are all friendly, especially the bartender Imogen who’s always smiley and very funny. Plus the dogs at the pub are always a fun treat! Thanks! ☺️

I had a fantastic experience at the Walnut Tree, and I must commend the excellent service provided by Rebecca. From the moment I walked in, her warm and friendly demeanor set the tone for a memorable evening. A nice cozy pub - Becca was our server and was very attentive, fantastic service! The only negative I'd say is that the food is a little over priced for what you get.

I went into this establishment on Saturday and was having an alright time. That was until a tall gentleman went around the bar, waving his finger around, calling everyone aggressive homophobic slurs. He was then grabbed by one of the customers and was almost struck. He then backed away and then proceeded to go into the other room and proceed with the same lovely language. Sometimes happens in pubs but we can move past that. I was then told by the people on the table next to me that it was the manager's boyfriend. Such a display is a disgraceful image to place on the business, as well as the company. Should stonegate support this behavior I believe that no person that is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community should attend this pub or any of their venues.

This pub is lovely, we decided to come with a group of friends for drinks and food for a little birthday celebration, the hunters chicken was delicious and a couple of my friends had the burgers and they said it was great. Our food came out really quick and it was nice and hot and the red haired girl who served us was great. The two female bartenders were lovely too and quick with our drinks, we got a few cocktails and the red haired girl bought them to us which was really nice. we didn't read the reviews before coming here but after seing what some of them say i can with hand on heart disagree with the negative ones, great atmosphere, lovely building great food! Would recomend! another positive it seems really student friendly too :)

As one of a few of the local bars/clubs near us this is without a doubt our favourite. Every time we are in the staff great us as friends, are always polite, friendly and make you feel so welcome, they take the effort to get to know you (and even our dog). All of the staff are amazing I can't pick a number 1, you are all my number 1! What makes it even better, is this is a truly dog friendly pub, Max is made to be so welcomed when he comes with us, and missed when we leave him at home. We personally haven't eaten in the pub but our friend has and she commented that food she has was great, and that was on a busy new years eve. There is a quiz on a Thursday which we haven't actually taken part in but 'attempted' from the sidelines, which always seems very popular, and would test our knowledge! So I guess all in all this is to me a great local, just what you would want, and if you read this review and stop by, we will possibly be in with Max (a black lab) say hi and enjoy the pub. Just to confirm I am not staff or employed by Stonegate I am a genuine local who gives credit where credit is due!

Best pub in York! Such a great atmosphere, staff are so accommodating and work so hard to help the customers! I honestly would not want to go to another pub for a good night! Food is great and very well presented and the team always have a smile on their face. Highly recommend

Very poor in most departments, went for drinks on Saturday evening and was served cloudy flat John Smiths which the other guests sat next to us also reported and exchanged it for a Blonde which wasn’t much better. They then continued to serve this to the other guests who shared the same experience instead of taking off. Then had a Whisky with a mixer which was warm and also flat as the chiller fridge seemed not to be working, asked for ice which I was told I couldn’t have because the machine had been turned off! Before last orders? Young staff weren’t at all interested or very communicative. This wasn’t at all a good experience, all three drinks were either warm, flat or cloudy!

We went when it was quiet. Some of the menu items were not available and there was no notice of this prior to ordering . Good alternatives were available and all meals were good.

I made a booking for 4 people for NY Eve on Nov 28th when I went in for lunch. When we arrived for our 6pm booking on Dec 31st we were told we didn't have a booking, no one had contacted me to confirm ....

Aside from the odd sour faced old man it’s a very nice pub and very reasonable prices considering the area will be back!

It was a disappointing Christmas lunch. The staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was good but, unfortunately, the food was very disappointing. I would rank it as a below par Sunday lunch. The free tea, coffee and mulled wine were a nice touch, as was the present of peppermint candy canes, but the food was a big let down.

6 of us called for lunch one Wednesday. We arrived 11.00 am and ordered food at 12 (time food started). We were told there was no rump steak for the mixed grill so could either have extra chicken or gammon, that was ok, I was just really looking forward to some black pudding . On the menu it said burgers were served with salad. Everybody asked where the salad was ... apparently the 3 tiny bits under the burger WAS the salad. The actual meals were all overcooked and the food dry, even the garden peas ! And to top it off .... no black pudding! When asked, I was told they had run out of that too, so would I like something else, I ordered a side portion of onion rings. Big mistake .... burnt offerings ! Shouldn't have bothered. Totally disappointed with the meal after looking forward to it for some time. I did give the guy behind the bar my feedback about all 6 meals being overcooked and all he could say was sorry. I'm hoping this is just a one off but I won't be rushing back there.

Nice pub but the Sunday dinner was average, roast potatoes tasted fried, mash and veg were hard, not appetising, meat, Yorkshire puddings and gravy were fine, nothing to write home about.

We ate as a family. My daughter granddaughter and I. The roast dinner was tasty. Roast potatoes were hard but yorkshire and gravy was very nice. My daughter had pork belly burger which she enjoyed. A pleasant day!

Lovely Sunday dinner perfect beef. Reasonable prices and dispite not having park anymore was a really child friendly environment and will be visiting again in the near future.

What a fantastic pub. Loved my lunch in the beer garden with a crisp pint. Rebecca seems to be an excellent member of the bar staff I've never once had a bad drink poured! I also highly recommend the quiz nights they are great fun and only £2 entry.

Lovely pub! I hadn't been in here before but I'd passed it lots of times and it finally took my fancy. They had great decor up for Halloween. I ordered a steak and my wife ordered a cod and chips, the fish was a very good size and the steak was cooked really well! I reckon they have the best peppercorn sauce in all of york Service and atmosphere was really good 10/10.

Popped in for the quiz night and had a blast. The staff were amazing. My wife and I shared a combo sharer, definitely more than enough for the bother of us but was great.

Nice roomy pub, dog friendly with a big beer garden. Reasonable menu, but many items were not available including some roasts on a Sunday which was a shame. Roast beef slices were nice and tender and roast potatoes good, but veg were undercooked root and overcooked greens. Good sized portions and nice gravy.

Went with a friend and, although a huge Wake taking place in the building we were given a table in the rear of the property. It was quiet, spotlessly clean and we so enjoyed our meal. The young people serving were so very helpful. Thank you.

We’ve eaten here the last 2 nights with a big group visiting from America and really appreciate the friendliness of the staff who were very accommodating both times and even found a way to squeeze in our large party on a quiz night when we hadn’t booked in advance. Special thanks to Bella who was really organized and managed our multiple orders and requests efficiently! Everyone enjoyed their food and drinks

Barman very unhelpful. We asked if they are serving food, confirmed they were. Told us menu on tables. Paid for 1 alcoholic drink. From the menu we saw that alcoholic drinks are on offer when bought with a buger... Why didn't he tell us... When l asked if we could take advantage of offer... NO!

Great pub for a drink in the beer garden and really hoped the food would be good but unfortunately not! Fish and chips was just OK but the fish was very overcooked. Sausage and mash had the cheapest sausages and a solid lump of microwaved mash that was just warm. Such a disappointment as we really like this pub but if they don't do something soon about the food people will simply stop coming. So many bad reviews so take note..

Welcoming helpful staff n meal enjoyed

It's a good pub for a beer and sport, but the beer garden and patio area has dog poo in various places. Our lad stood in some and then cycled through some more. We had to return our fish and chips. The fish was totally overcooked and the peas were shrivelled up. They did refund it though.

Returned my food as the gammon was cold ...returned after warming it up and rest of food cold ! Why serve food on "lava" plates which are cold ! When hot the plates are meant to stay hot longer and keep food hotter for longer. ! ..gave up ..paid the bill and left.. not good ..definately wont return.

Kitchen should close at 8pm on a Friday evening (!) but we were not even allowed to order at 7:50pm. Not funny when you‘re hungy and just walk 2mls to get there :(
