Awful place, food was cold and soggy and the managers were just as bad arguing infront of customers and treating staff horribly. Wouldn’t recommend at all

Took the kids to Saltburn for a day out and grabbed fish and chips from Oscar’s. The portions were just right, and the fish was so fresh! Will definitely be back!

Visited Saltburn and stopped at Oscar’s for a bite. The fish was thick and flakey with a delightful crispy batter. The chips were golden and delicious. Such a treat to enjoy by the seaside, with fast service.

Today Sunday the 18th of August after having a lovely day at the beach with my family we decided to order Fish and Chips for supper. We ordered Fish and Chips Butty take away for £6,50 by 4 only to get home 12 miles away to find there was were no Chips 😡

Like other reviews - Such poor attitude and service from staff, really just queue at the other Fish & Chip shop 100 metres away and you will not experience such contempt for customers. Twice within 10 minutes of opening a staff member was terribly rude to customers. Working in a busy public facing role can be tough for sure but the disdain seemed wholly unnecessary and bad for business.

Wow! Absolutely amazing fish & chips by the sea. Freshly cooked and huge portions, lovely lightly battered cod and well worth the 5 minute wait whilst they were cooked. Really friendly helpful staff and the fish & chips are MUCH better than the well known competitor a few yards away! So pleased we tried Oscars and will definitely return - 10/10 thank you. Just need a few more tables outside please 🙂

Appallingly slow. Bad customer service, extortionate prices and overall worst chippy experience I've had. Wouldn't let me get a sachet of ketchup which I missed off the order as card spend is minimum £1 and sachet is 40p. Attitude of the staff is so unfriendly . Avoid like the plague. Take a picnic to saltburn as the chip shops are all slow . Update to owner comments : it's such a shame that you can't take any negative feedback. This is a recurring theme throughout your reviews. The only part that shows you care is the part at the end where you as a business owner decide to take action and speak with all staff on duty. I think your response speaks for itself to be honest. Such a shame.

It may have been good had Oscars been open. I find it amazing that in the middle of July ( high season?) it was closed, especially as Saltburn was quite busy.

I worry that restaurants on the beach front will be poor quality and expensive. This is neither! Perfect fish and chips, with a great view of the sea.

I struggled to find a chip shop that had chips suitable for a non meat/fish eater. I asked a member of staff and she informed me that the chips were cooked in beef dripping (ie cheaply). I thanked her for telling me and ordered fish and chips for my partner. I found the staff unfriendly and abrupt, as she handed a ticket I asked if it was possible to get a bowl of water for my dog, she said no and I was left waiting around for the order whilst my partner walked away in search of dog water. (There was available dog bowls and water just past the mini golf area.) My number was called and the order was shoved towards me. I think the staff working that day could use a lesson in basic manners and communication. My partner said the fish and chips tasted very average.

I’ve got to say this is the worst fish abd chips I’ve ever had, he just took the fish out the frier and put it on ti the chips. So much oil pouring out of the batter and ruined it. Cod should be white, why was my “cod” grey, looked like coley

Horrible fish - looked rotten. Edit - re response from Oscars. I don't need fish and chips 'explaining' to me thank you. The fish was horrible, I wouldn't have wanted a replacement and the fact you say you would have 'explained' to me that the fish was fine and that you think I deliberately mashed up the fish to make it look bad (why would I do that?) shows that requesting a refund would have likely been a fruitless exercise and would have just put me in a bad mood for no reason. No I think I was right to just eat the chips, bin the fish and leave a genuine review of my experience. If you do bother to read my reviews you'll see I rarely dish out 1 star reviews and always try and be fair and impartial.

Loved the fish and chips and very generous portions. Seating outside a totally 10/10 experience. Loved it and l told them so! Will be back in August

Hi Oscar's thanks for a great lunch we are the Thornaby walking group and at the end of the walk we all enjoyed our fish and chips, we all got served immediately and the food was great, the best time thing was that I ordered exactly the same last year and this year and your prices seemed the same, well done see you again

Travelled from Darlington to have early evening fish and chips by the sea. Website said open until 6.30pm, arrived at 5.00pm and closed. TOTAL WASTE OF TIME. We then went to The Ship and had a lovely meal fortunately. At least update your website Oscar's to save disappointment!

Just had Fish and Chips in Saltburn from Oscars Fish & Chips - Saltburn by the Sea, really watery tasteless cod? and chips 😩🙁🙁 I am already really regretting wasting my calories on very poor quality fish, just really disappointing food., especially as the fish was cooked to order, my expectations were high. Options for eating were limited today as The Seaview is closed, so we thought we would try Oscars, won’t make the same mistake again we will be giving it a miss . Definitely won’t be returning . You would think that with a captured audience that effort would be made to make new customers feel welcome ( one very rude member of staff certainly didn’t ) and impress them with the food. And if health and hygiene is paramount, staff should have loose tie hair back , and keep their hands off their hair, face, clothes etc when handling customers food trays , food, etc. very poor rude customer service. Avoid. Poor service, poor food and surly staff make this one to avoid. N.B. To Add …. It appears I have had my review blocked on Facebook, and I have had follow up feedback from this establishment, they seem to have an issue with feedback that is not positive. They seem to suggest that I have been untruthful about the food quality today, and unfair with my feedback. I’m not vindictive, I did ask if I could add my own salt etc. i wasn’t rude about it I just didn’t want someone else doing it, once I was assured that I could watch and advise them while they did it I didn’t have a problem. However the reasoning behind customers not being allowed to was silly, I wasn’t allowed for health and safety reasons and food standards and safety regulations??? Unheard of but as I said I accepted it, and I wasn’t rude at all. That said, as is, no amount of seasoning would have improved the food I was served today, and as they have drawn attention to it , I have never had a badly cooked or tasteless piece of fish from The Seaview ; ( yes my favourite place in Saltburn ) so it’s to their detriment that they even make the comparison, as clearly they don’t have the same standards or regard for the produce and how it’s prepared because if they source the fish from the same supplier it wouldn’t be difficult to prepare and cook it as well. But I doubt this, as a completely square piece of watery fish in soggy batter; I think it was likely frozen and frozen a while ago. I didn’t walk all the way back down from the top of the cliffs to complain, I didn’t eat it all, it went in the bin !!!! Disappointing chip portion to be honest and not too keen on the curry sauce. Very average.

We have purchased regular fish and chips and large haddock and chips. The large portion although more expensive came with portion of chips that wouldn't be enough even for my daughter ( 1/3of the tray) and the chips were cold. The haddock looked slightly bigger than cod in regular portion. I questioned the chips portion with staff, but was advised that it is what it is. After long wait, unhelpful staff and overpriced, cold food we will unfortunately not be coming back.

Very quick service on a weekday lunch time - the food was ready pretty much as soon as I had paid. The food was very hot and fresh and was a very tasty lunchtime treat.

Called in here today, chips were ok, fish batter was discoloured and looked awful, fish was half white and half grey. Curry was thick and unpourable from the tub, mushy peas tasted like sugar. Absolutely terrible, will not go ever again.

Waited in the queue for over 30 mins. Get to the front, told 10 mins for a fish cake! Hardly a special order! Revised my order to fish butty and chips and told 5 mins. In reality it took an extra 15 mins so 45 mins in all. The food wasn’t even that good, chips was luke warm and a battered sausage looked black and cooked to within an inch of its life No apology, staff miserable, place was filthy with food all over the floor and counter! Massively over-priced, would not recommend

Really nice food and drinks. Shorter queues and a lovely service. Lovely staff and good mannered. Let the children decide and could take your time. Service with a smile.

I went a few months ago and it wasn't great. So thought we'd try again to give it a second chance. It was worse! Really greasy, soggy chips and the fish was just a big ball of oil and absolutely disgusting... Don't think we'll be going back in a hurry.

Fish? Five stars. Chips? Five stars. Mushy peas? Five stars. Freshness? Five stars. Hot? Five stars. Green packaging? Five stars. Whatever you do, for goodness sake, make sure you partake of the superb fish and chips on offer at Oscars Fish & Chips on Lower Promenade (right by the sea). We had to work out the opening hours by trial and error while we were in Saltburn. Eventually we found out Oscars opened between 12:30 and 16:30 (call it 16:00 to avoid disappointment).. But it was 100% worth persevering. Top-notch product. Totally satisfied.

I wish we could give 10 / 10 stars. Popped over to play the penny arcades & have a walk on the pier, stopped of here for a bite to eat on the outdoor benches ...... wonderful F&C. Proper chips with light batter on the fish & cracking curry sauce. I even went back to say thank you. It was THAT tasty. This will be out go too grub stop from now on.

Really good fish and chips. Fresh and a good size. Prices are reasonable. Outside seating area which is great with sea views on a dry day! No amenities but there are some good, clean public toilets not far away.

The service was fine and was happy to pay £8.50 for nice quality fish n chips, really struggling with the portion size I got for a kids box of sausage n chips. £4.50 for a tiny portion of chips and a v. Small sausage in a novelty cardboard box. No drink. When I ordered I assumed that it would be better value, but when I checked later, the standard size of the sausage n chips is cheaper???? (I ordered it without feeling the need to compare prices and was shocked at the portion when I opened the box). It needs reviewing as it makes no sense.

With only 3 people in front of me I stood in a queue to order a bag of chips. After being served I then had to wait outside with numerous customers of varied size orders and no sooner than 20 minutes later I got my single bag of chips!! Surely a cool trick would be to serve tiny orders like this straight away and more annoying was the scrappy few tasteless chips I received after my wait. Zero value for money.

Had fish and chips there today. Best I have ever had in Saltburn and the best anywhere in a long time. The fish was thick, fresh and beautifully fried just flaking in lovely chunks. The batter light and crispy and chips with some real taste. If only all fish and chips were this good. Good value too at £7.

Well cooked and tastey cod and chips with good sized portions at a fair price. Can sit on stone wall on beach even at high tide and have a peaceful meal listening to the sea.

Nice piping hot fish and chips on the sea front. Prompt friendly service. Price is good for where they are. Portion size ensured good value for money in my opinion. Only thing holding back 5 stars was a 10p charge for a slightly better wooden fork, than the one provided for free. Seemed to be a little unnecessary, but I can live with it.

Don't usually get fish and chips as take away. Wish we hadn't. Extremely fatty food and very salty. Couldn't eat about half of the chips as they had shabby bits on them. Put about half the meal straight into a rubbish bin.

Thought we would try this one out as regular one was closed for refurbishment.The chips were hard and cold very poor quality the fish seemed to be very dry and tasteless. Must have been bad as the dog wouldn’t even entertain them. Total waste of money and would not recommend it.

This isn't a review of the food, but if there's one thing that bugs me about food places it's when they close half an hour earlier than advertised.

Visited Saltburn with intention of eating fish n chips at Sea view which was closed. Went to Oscars and were totally impressed. Hard to imagine that they could be bettered.

Don't usually write negative reviews as I appreciate people's effort to make a living. However, these are hard times for many people so if you want to charge £20 for two fish n chips, sauces and two cans of drink, you have to do better.Cold, hard chips and a small, square 'regular' fish that I thought was one of their fish bites by mistake! Must do better.Top tip if you're in the car: nip up to Church St chippy for your fish n chips and bring them back to a bench on the clifftop. Still not cheap but much better and far bigger.

What a superb fish and chip shop on the sea front. The staff are superb, excellent menu and the food is cooked to perfection. Would highly recommend giving it a try.

Excellent fish and chips (and sausage for the dog) My dog loved this place, he barked it was the best battered sausage he had ever had - the fish and chips were very good also. Very reasonably priced, but for some reason there was no queue despite the other fish and chip shop having 15-20 people queueing?Anyway I don’t care - I’d rather eat here

Fell onto this Fish and Chip Shop today Friday 9th October. I usually go to the Seaview chippy but it was closed today, as i walked on i came across Oscars so thought id give them a try. Under the guidelines of the pandemic was well organised in one door out of the other. Now to the best part, the fish and chips were gorgeous, beautiful white flakes of fish in the perfect cooked batter not one bit of soggy absolutely spot on, chips oh my delicious. Well done to all great team, and i called back after eating them and told them that they were spot on. 👍🥰

Honestly, I did not expect much but the fish and chips were really nice, worth the walk further down the seafront.

Recently discovered saltburn-we're from york & its our new favourite north east resort. Spent 5 & half hours resting on the beach & decided to have takeaway rather than queue up in whitby. We decided on oscars and wasnt let down at all. Nice big haddock,crunchy batter,nice chips & peas. Will certainly go here in future

I know we are in unprecedented times and business is slow but the staff working today were miserable and very unfriendly, the young female serving looked as if we had disturbed her rest as the look she gave could have frozen the fish, not welcoming or professional, next time we visit Saltburn by the sea we will try a different fish and chip shop. Its a shame as the food was lovely but at the prices charged i would expect better service from the staff.

Fabulous tasting take away which was well placed for enjoying on the sea front / pier. Quick service but with the taste of food which has been freshly cooked.

After a nice walk a long the beach at Saltburn decided on some fish and chips by the sea. So called in at OSCARS what great fish and chips they are serving up there. Lovely staff so helpful even cut up the sausage for our dog . So take it from me well worth calling in for your fish and chips . Got to be done.

It’s up there as a decent fish and chip shop but it excels for its views. Just be prepared to pay a little bit extra and wait for a lengthily period for the pleasure.

Had to socially distance queue outside, which couldn’t be helped- managed well once in shop. Which took about 45 mins. But the chips and sausage I had were great! The kids liked their meals too.

The shop was quiet today & the chips were cold & obviously had been in pan along time they should have binned them instead of offering to customers & cooked to order.Took the chips back to complain & they were not interested offered know refund or apology Stay clear if it’s quiet as they put profit before customer satisfaction

All the way from Sheffield to find the Seaview chippy was closed for renovations, no worries we’ll go further down to Oscars. I won’t waste my time again! A huge queue and plenty of customers but chaps behind the fryer spent more time talking about people in the queue or on the promenade. The two girls serving we’re having to work with what they’d got! All in all a long wait for not a lot a very poor frustrating experience. I

Food looked nice and it was busy, usually good signs. However, the whole experience was just so poor.After a long (15-20 minutes) wait to be served, they couldn’t take our order as their card machine had ran out of charge. Cue some murmurs from the two girls serving about plugs not charging and us not having cash. We were asked to wait until it charged, but after 5 minutes we overheard them say that it wasn’t. We just left.In the time we were in the shop (approx 30 minutes), they had twice ran out of fish, peas, bread, trays and forks. This caused at least 2 different customers to ask for their money back, as well as the backlog of orders causing confusion for everyone involved.On a January afternoon, and at £7 a pop for fish and chips, you’d expect them to be able to do the basics right. Dread to think what this place is like on a ‘busy’ day.

Unfortunately we were turned away from this establishment on a bank holiday, apparently ran out of stock. Cant really say any more about the place.

Food cooked to order and was piping hot, delicious and served by staff who are very pleasent and friendly. I also like the outdoor seating area which was clean and tidy.

Dusting food terrible customer service would not give any water for our dogs. Lied about not having tap water as didn't want to give us any.

As expected the beech was crowded and the queues for the fish and chips were long. However the staff were very friendly and efficient so we didn’t have to wait long. The food was delicious and eating sitting on the beach made the afternoon.

Very nice fish and chips, my son had the sausage and chips. For six of us and some drinks, was a very agreeable price. The food was hot and cooked well, very tasty. No complaints. I would definitely recommend this establishment.

The family and I popped down to Saltburn recently. It was a fairly nice day so we had a walk along the promenade. While there we called into Oscars for a spot of lunch. Glad we did, smashing fish and chips at a reasonable price. Decent seating outside and good service inside. All in all, very enjoyable.

Normally go to Seaview but just wanted some chips today, wish I hadn’t bothered, chips were soggy burnt and cold, looked like they’d been cooked yesterday and reheated... won’t be back.

Sorry, one of the worst fish and chips ever had (if not the worst). May be I was unlucky but fish was dry and chewy, chips soggy. It is also my wife’s opinion. 1 star for location and view from outside tables.

Hired a beach hut so for lunch had to have fish and chips. Not disappointed, we had a mixture of cod and chips, fish bites ,sausage and chips and more, and everything was great. Because it was fairly quiet everything was cooked to order so it was all hot and fresh. Great location on the promenade near the pier and the staff were all helpful.

We visited yesterday, 3 portions of cod and chips and a drink each. The food was fresh, hot, tasty and plentiful however the drinks selection and the staff attitude left a lot to be desired.

Bought fish and chips here to eat in beach hut we had rented. When opened chips were burnt - that no exaggeration. Will be returning next month definitely not buying from here.

After previous issues with the Management at the Seaview Restaurant near the pier, we now use Oscar's & its better than others.

We only visited for our regular seaside fix of chips over the weekend so cannot really comment on the quality of everything on offer. Service was OK considering it was very busy and the chips were nice enough without being exceptional.

Look at you like you've wee'd on their Christmas presents on Christmas day when placing an order - no thanks will take my business else where in the future.

Yes, 75 minutes to be served at a chip shop! We kept hoping it would speed up - it didn’t! And to add insult to injury the chips were lukewarm and felt like they’d been kept warm a while! Not enough staff - 3 people trying manfully to keep on top of it, but they had no chance. Yes, it was a nice sunny day in Saltburn today, and there were plenty of people around. One young lad behind us encapsulated it perfectly when he said he could have caught his own and cooked it quicker! Really, very very poor! Never again!
