Oscar & Bentleys in Canterbury

When we first walked in the staff just didn’t acknowledge us there was no table of 6 available so asked if we could move the table of 2 and table of 4 together as they were next to each other and both free. At first we was told no and then after a bit of explaining we was told we’d have to wait 15 minutes so they could clear the table. There was a tray with a few empty drinks on. 15 mins was up so we all went in and sat down the tray with drinks on was still on the table and the table hadn’t even been wiped. After all getting settled the waitress finally moved the tray and explained they was busy. We ordered drinks and food together. The drinks took 20 minutes to come. I had coke in a bottle and a glass with ice in. My ice was already half melted. Over an hour later our food came out. Burgers were dry. The Mac and cheese was the worst thing I had ever seen. It was like really stodgy porridge and did not taste of cheese at all. Any time we asked the waitress something she just made it seem like we was asking her to go above and beyond for us when really we wasn’t being difficult even in the slightest. At the end we go to pay and they add a 10% service fee without even asking. Why would I want to pay 10% of my nearly £150 bill for a poor and quite disgusting service. The only plus’s side to this place was the decorations, the mayonnaise and the fact they allowed dogs in

We hebben hier een matige ervaring gehad. Eten was redelijk, de vis was vetter dan normaal de bedoeling zou moeten zijn. Doordat de deur continu open en dicht ging was het er behoorlijk fris. Bovenop de rekening kwam er nog een service fee van 12.5% wat ik gezien de service te veel vind.

During our 'mother and daughter weekend away' In Canterbury we had decided to have ‘proper’ fish and chips on the coast but the weather was so grim that it would have been very miserable going down to the sea. I did a quick search on ‘the best fish and chips in Canterbury’ and came up trumps with Oscar and Bentley; it certainly was the best we’ve had for a long time! Beautifully light crispy batter and fluffy fat chips with garlic peas (wow!), in a pretty little bistro with attentive staff. It definitely got our vote!

If there would be 6 stars, we would give! We found this place on our long weekend at Canterbury based on an online collection of gluten free places. What a relief to not stress about cross contamination! We came with a good hot fish & chips in mind, which I'm sure is great, but we ended up eating chicken katsu curry we haven't seen any places since becoming gluten intolerant! The lady welcoming us was extremely lovely, leaving us to ourselves to select and to enjoy the delicious food. I had the chicken katsu burger and my husband tried the chicken katsu curry. Both were finger licking delicious and left us only with the dilemma which amazing dessert we should leave with! Would love to come back so in the summer when we plan to come back we will revisit this place to try more of these gorgeous dishes!

Each year we go on christmas shopping to Canterbury and we always have troubles finding a good place to eat because my wife is allergic to many things. We need to search no more. This place is absolut perfect cause they are so aware of allergies and the staff helps you in choosing from the menu. Even when you aren't allergic you can enjoy a good diversified menu, prepared with love and with local ingredients. The service is good, the food is excellent and the setting is great. It's really a cosy little place where you can ejoy delicious food and relaxing a bit from the busy shopping. Even vegans/vegetarians can be satisfied here. Next year we'll come again to this place!

I booked dinner here recently for myself and a couple of friends after evensong at the Cathedral. Such a lovely, cosy place. The staff were absolutely brilliant and tolerated my fussiness and questions so well (I'm a vegan who doesn't like mushroom or aubergines). They were able to customise a dish to accommodate my needs and my friend, who is gluten- and dairy-intolerant, was thrilled with how much choice the menu offered her-- something she is not at all used to with most restaurants. She was visiting the area and her experience at Oscar & Bentley's really lifted the whole trip-- it was so nice to see her at ease and not stressed out over the food. All of the food and drink was excellent and I cannot fault the service. The menu was full of local produce. Excellent choice of cocktails & mocktails. The building is beautiful inside and out. The location is great, very close to most main attractions. I could go on! Very highly recommend.

I eat here whenever i go to Canterbury as its all gluten free and i have tried many dishes from the menu and all have been well presented fresh and hot even have a good selection of gluten free beers. Staff and management are all friendly and attentive and ask what allergies you may have before taking your order, for me its celiac and i can eat everything there. 😋

I've always loved Oscar and Bentley's because their menu is entirely gluten free. I also have other allergies and felt that it was a safe place for me to dine out. Whilst I've never had any problems here in the past and the staff have been knowledgeable on additional allergies, however, this could not be said for my experience recently. I ordered my lunch, and then informed the waitress of my chili allergy, which she wrote down on her notepad. I can only assume that she just wrote 'chili' and nothing else down and so with a miscommunication between her and the kitchen chefs, my meal ended up covered in chili oil. Having tried the meal and realizing I had just consumed chili, I called the waitress over to confirm with the kitchen what was on my meal. She came back and said it was a hot chili oil. I looked at her to say I just told you I was allergic to chili and she wiped the plate away from me. I then had to sit as my colleague ate her lunch and I was left panicking and taking an antihistamine. There was no apology from the young waitress at all. If you are going to advertise as an establishment that caters for allergies, there needs to be serious training and communication to all staff and it be taken seriously. I would hate to think what would happen to people with more severe allergies/epi-pens. I was given a voucher as an apology from the floor manager but I feel unsafe and sad to return. Mistakes happen, yes, but when you are playing with someone's life it becomes more of an issue.

We had a lovely lunch at this restaurant. It was totally gluten free and took away all the worry of eating out and cross contamination. Although only one of us was gluten free we both enjoyed the food and went back a second time during our stay in Canterbury.

A totally gluten free restaurant and locally sourced ingredients wines,beers,soft drinks and waters. The batter is something to be experienced on the battered fish or the onion rings.Crunchy thick and tasty. Large sweet menu also with some interesting features. Service was excellent as always,having been a number of times since they opened they are constantly excellent.

Picked this based on the reviews...... Tried to book for 6.30pm as we had booked a walking tour at 8pm but they said we would be better coming at 7pm as we would be served the meals within 20 minutes. Eventually got the meal just before 7.50pm. We had drank our drinks way before that but we were not offered anymore neither could we get anyone's attention to get another drink. The food was awful the katsu chicken had a rock hard unbreakable crust the chicken was chewy and it was completely tasteless. My husband had dirty burger which was so hard he struggled to bite it the meal was cold and tasteless. I went to the counter to pay as we needed to leave he asked how was the meal I told him it was awful and elaborated as to why he said oh sorry and presented me with the card machine definitely don't recommend The menu was also very limited. The place was small and the tables were uncomfortably cramped together

I took my wife here in July 2023 for our wedding anniversary, the service was perfect, attentive, but not bothersome, the food arrived promptly - which was great as it was prepared from fresh, it tasted fantastic. We had a starter, main and dessert as well as some drinks. Will be back.

100% gluten-free - such a rarity! We had lovely lunch (burgers) and dinner (salmon and chicken katsu) with tasty mocktails. Reasonably priced and very friendly staff. Service was a bit slow but at least the food was cooked from scratch, not reheated. I especially enjoyed the warm almond frangipane (they even shared the recipe when I inquired about it) with ice cream. Would definitely eat there again.

Dank desserts, which are also gluten free. And close to Franco Manca, whose dessert menu is disgracefully inadequate.

We might just had been on a very busy day, but I do not think that should be an acceptable excuse for a restaurant. The restaurant is completely gluten free so it is great for people with celiac disease. Unfortunately, it took them over an hour to serve our food from the moment we ordered. All our dishes had rice and it was well overcooked (surely because of the wait!). Also, when we paid, we split the bill and they charged the tip automatically without asking, which we found very rude. As I said, we had plenty of hopes in it as it was our first visit to Canterbury. It is a pity we would not choose it again based on our first experience.

On Wednesday lunchtime the service was slow and the food poor and inadequate. The salad with feta cheese did not have feta which we were told had run out only after long wait and only when I prompted an alternative were 3 pieces of halloumi provided with a poor salad. My partner had Kentish hash which had nothing to it apart from the optional extra of bacon. Service was added automatically to bill. We needed to go to another cafe for an adequate lunch The staff were a woman and several young girls. All seemed overwhelmed. I was surprised to read good reviews. Our experience was awful.

Coeliac heaven! Oscar & Bailey’s is completely gluten free. Starters, mains, puddings, we coeliacs can safely choose anything. I had the best fish & chips I can remember - such light & crispy batter, even to the last mouthful; perfectly cooked chips; home made tartare sauce. Delicious. Not just gluten free but tasty, beautifully prepared, carefully presented and all served with a smile.

All meals here are gluten free so for a family who has a member who has coeliac this place is great. The fact that the food is awesome and the staff are super friendly is a great bonus. All meals are cooked to order and freshly prepared which can lead to a small delay in food arriving however we would definitely recommend and would definitely visit again when we are next in Canterbury.

We arrived for our 8 pm booking at 7.30 pm and were asked to sit outside with a drink until we were called. At 8.10 I asked if we had been forgotten, the staff member apologised and we were eventually seated at 8.15. We ordered drinks and food, but noticed that there was a dog under the next table. At 8.45 food arrived at the next table, we commented on this and were told that the next table reservation had been for 7.30 pm and starters had arrested fed at 8.45 pm! We decided to leave without waiting any longer. As we paid for our drinks the staff member who we paid was extremely unhappy with the situation, I said we would post a negative review, the staff member said ‘good that may help. It was clear that the kitchen was completely overwhelmed by the numbers dining. As we were leaving another group arrived with a dog. We couldn’t comment on the foo, since we never saw any.

Food was as usual delicious. However, unlike our previous visits to O&B service was indifferent. While our we were promptly asked if we would like drinks and our order taken our meal took more than half an hour to arrive. Furthermore, a guests who at another table who arrived after us were served their food well before ours arrived. Service was not helped by the fact that we had three different staff attend to us during the course of our meal. We would be happy to recommend O&B to friends and will eat there again ourselves, but hope next time that service is more in keeping with the restaurants usual standards.

Service was extremely poor and the staff lacked any form of charisma or personality. Atmosphere was like eating your not very nice food in a morgue.

A really nice little Bistro in a converted pub. Nice people, nice food, and a good space. We were in no hurry, but it took a while before pre lunch drinks arrived, hence 3 stars for that. Will definitely go back.

Waited an hour for our food and way over priced for a salad. Not impressed at all. Will not be returning. This was my second visit, first visit impressed, reason for returning.

Not sure what to say. We had a burger and the steak. Both were ok, steak kinda tough, burger kinda dry. We also had one glass of wine and a local cider. WE PAID 75£...not worth it, not even a little bit.

Welcoming staff, very pleasant and attentive. Food was very nice. The calamari had a kick of heat but i did enjoy them. Also the prawns was very nice too. We had the egg on crushed new potatoes and that was a modest portion but tasted lovely. This easily steered us towards the sweets, and tasty crumble with a scoop of ice cream in a compact bowl. Walked out feeling content but not heavy in tummy which enabled us to continue our days visit nicely. I would find it hard to find anything negative to say about this place. But if i’m pushed too then perhaps some may find the service charge on the bill to be a little cheeky, i was ready to tip close to the service charge on the bill. This in my opinion was not an issue worthy of mentioning at the time but some may say otherwise. To conclude, i’d go back if i was in the area again because I’ll know i’m getting some nice tasty food with a good few vegan options to boot.

This is the place to go to for a good gluten free menu.

This is our go-to pace when we are in Canterbury. My wife has coeliac, so eating out gets stressful, Oscar and Bentleys never disappoint. The food is 100% GF and is amazing. As a non coeliac, I look forward to visiting here just as much as she does. The burger bun is GF, so for non GF people who would be bothered by this, you might want to get something else. The fish chips are as good if not better than other restaurants, and you wouldn't know it was GF.

Best when a live band is playing in the next street 👌🏽 Good food, nice location, proper ketchup and mayo bottles, best for people with allergies. Gluten free and lacto free available here. Prices a bit higher than usual but therefore local and well made stuff!

This restaurant deserve a special attention. I personally had the best restaurant's experience in years: cozy, family owned small bistro; Slow Roast Pork Belly and Katsu Chicken Curry were incredibly delicious and well presented. This restaurant is a must-visit.

Waited forever (an hour) for our food despite nobody being there when we ordered. Food was at best mediocre. My 5 year old would have done a better burger. Booked it in a rush because our friends where worried about booking for Father’s Day and can honestly say that I regretted this from 30 seconds in.

From the delectable food to the excellent service and inviting atmosphere, it provided an amazing dining experience. The restaurant's meticulous attention to detail was evident in every aspect. I opted for their signature dish, the Dirty Burger with potato wedges, and it exceeded my expectations. The burger was generously sized and bursting with flavor, while the potato wedges were perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. This restaurant is a must-visit, delivering an unforgettable culinary journey.

Altogether excellent. Extraordinary to have absolutely everything gluten free but also varied, tasty, fulfilling.

We had dinner here during our trip to Canterbury and we loved the place and the food. And the service not to forget! It's great if you are vegan or gluten-free, as they have some great options for that. We opted for the Risotto and Aubergine Katsu Curry and both were delicious. We shared a starter as well. They have a great wine selection by the glass. The service was very friendly and attentive. We did make a booking but on a Tuesday evening that was not necessary. All in all, I fully recommend the place!

Lovely experience. I wandered in without a booking and despite having a busy Saturday night, the staff were kindly able to accommodate me. Delicious as always. The staff were wonderful with my parents visiting Canterbury. It felt decadent but affordable. The katsu curry was an excellent blend of flavours. Highly recommend.

Absolutely amazing place to eat. The food and service so wonderful. Lots of vegetarian/ Vegan choices. And dog friendly, which is great for the centre of Canterbury. We had a mixture of starters between two people, and vegan sticky toffee pud, and vegan crumble for desert, both absolutely yummy.

Nice venue and friendly staff. It's reassuring as a coeliac that the restaurant is completely gluten free. However, the food was no way as good as it was when we visited previously, back in early 2017. A little disappointed.

Recommended to some friends due to the gluten free options and the food previously was delicious (2 times prior), this time food wasn't as great, it was okay but not great, service initially was a bit bland too in the first half, but they changed staff half way through and it was much better, better engagement, a smile, more personality and friendly. I really like Oscar & Bentleys so giving it a 4 is sad for me, but based on today's meal and the comments from our friends brings the star rating down slightly.

Fantastic little restaurant. The staff were great, good with our daughters who are 4 years old and 7 months old and they also went above and beyond to fit us all in comfortably, even moving the tables over so we weren't too close to the door. Food was delicious and I honestly couldn't believe it was gluten free! Even the kids' food was home cooked and delicious. So we're the drinks, including the unicorn hot chocolate! We had a great time and will definitely be coming back again

I booked via open table for 7.45 Monday. Got the open table confirmation, turned up, no sign of booking and our kitchen closes at 8. Maybe if you can't serve food at 8pm you should communicate that to open table so you can't make a reservation then.

Arrived slightly early taken to table. Waited 20mins to order drinks. We were the only ones in the restaurant at this point. They took food order at same time as we were ready for this. Drinks didn’t arrive for another 20mins or more. Staff where friendly food was on but service was extremely slow

Found it after we had a bad experience in the Shakespeare restaurant. The difference here is they treat you with respect they went above and beyond. The young man that served us. This was only the second time I've visited here. The first was amazing, everything about it was amazing. The second time, not so much. The food was amazing! But the service I was not impressed with. I'm unsure if the young lady was new so if that's the case this would be some constructive feedback. We felt rushed, every 10 minutes she would check in on us. My mum had finished eating so she came over and cleared her plate - even though I had not finished. Which I found quite rude. Although it was only a few things it does make a difference. Unfortunately I did not get her name but we came in around 4pm on the 21st Jan. She had short brown hair and lovely quirky necklaces.
