Very average we got a tea and scone for two. Came close to 15£ .....which for a cold scone and stewd tea thought was overpriced. You pay seperately for jam and cream ... tiny amount of jam!. Service didnt bother me but some might take as a bit abrupt.

Came across this lovely cafe in passing, had a quick check of reviews and seamed promising. We were not disappointed. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We opted for a bacon butty as earlier review said it was nice. They were correct lovely bacon but then the cakes looked too good to pass on. So opted for a piece of the ginger cake, the sponge was so light. I would highly recommend

As the title says "surprising cafe in the middle of nowhere". We were driving along on our way to our stay in Grasmere when travelling through all the little roads we were suddenly met by Orton scar cafe. We decided to stop for a quick coffee. From the outside it doesn't really look anything but once inside there were plenty of people, mainly walkers. The food looked good and so we decided on a cheese toastie and some ginger cream cake. This cake certainly was the highlight. So light and fluffy and very gingery. The staff were really polite and as we were going some cyclists arrived, so they do get quite busy. Yes, it does look abit like a church or school hall, but it is just what you need in the middle of nowhere to refill, rest and then carry on your journey. Well done and keep up the good work.

Seems to have changed hands. My favourite used to be Small Breakfast, but there is only 1 breakfast now, about the size of the previous small one, but with only 1 slice of toast instead of 2 and ghastly wet microwaved bacon. Not sure if the black pudding, which used to be very tasty, has been replaced by a cheaper version.

We are regular visitors here but haven’t been for a while. Arrived yesterday lunchtime to a warm welcome from the very friendly staff. Plenty of room on this visit which is unusual as the place can get very busy. Extensive menu but I went for the Cumberland Sausage. I was not disappointed! The place is clean and the staff efficient and friendly. My meal was piping hot and very enjoyable. There is a vast range of sweets but not for today! Still a good excuse to!come back soon. As I’ve said it can get quite busy so be prepared for that.

I drop in here often when I’m hiking, cycling and motorbiking. It’s in the perfect location. Each and every time I exit feeling much the same. They were friendly and the food was good but it was completely unmemorable. Here are some personal observations. Let’s look at ambience first. Ok, it’s always warm, clean and tidy but although sounding harsh, it’s a bit like a village hall experience. Tables, neatly aligned, no mellow background music and due to the hall like acoustics, conversation is undertaken in hushed tones. Walls far too bare. There must be some good tasteful artwork produced locally? Think big and bold. I would also like to see the seating broken up into low screened bays with way more emphasis on comfort. Larger tables too, even if they are vintage. There’s no shortage of space. Maybe a few sofa’s with low tables in the corners for folks that are just stopping by for coffee and a slice of that yummy cake. A woodburner surrounded by vintage leather sofa’s would make a wonderful focal point. I, like many, prefer a more intimate cafe experience. Moving on….The coffee is great as is much of the food but I think you need to step up on some of the basics. I ordered homemade soup with a ‘crusty’ roll last Friday. It was spicy butternut squash and was a 9/10. Fantastic. A little spiral of sour cream would have looked and tasted even better but the accompanying crusty roll…..nearly unforgivable. Limp, warm and well, microwaved. I didn’t have the heart to say anything but where does crusty come in? You have so many artisan trade bakeries in the area. Look at what Tebay Services can offer. As for the service, well it is courteous but also a tad timid. Showing interest in your customers makes them your friends and they’ll keep coming back. Concluding, I’ll continue to visit but I’m frustrated at what could be great just passes for averagely good. You deserve to be way better and it’s so easily within reach.

We were very disappointed with our visit to Orton Scar cafe. The food was overpriced. I asked for a quiche with salad, I was served a small square of quiche with a few shreds of lettuce and 1/4 of tomato, I was charged £10.95 for this. I've given a star for the friendly young waitress who was very attentive. I've given a star for the cleanliness of the cafe. I do think the woman in charge could learn hospitality etiquette from the young waitress. It was also embarrassing hearing how she spoke to customers who were only asking for advice.

What a beautiful cafe in a gorgeous setting, such a shame the manager makes her customers feel so unwelcome. There was 2 lovely young ladies who were also working, they were very pleasant but obviously wary of their rather bossy and unpleasant boss. Food was okay, rather expensive for what it was, £1.20 for syrup. I was made to feel extremely awkward when I asked if I could swap my beans for another item on the menu… the younger member of staff went to ask the manager, who then came storming back to our table to say no swaps unless it’s a hash brown. Which I’m totally fine with, however her stand and manner was totally uncalled for and rather intimidating. I have worked in hospitality for over 6 years, and I’d never speak to a guest like that. Rather limited facilities due to the many sights dotted around the cafe stating wifi would be charged after the first hour and to use the charging plugs you must ask and again may be charged. I understand we’re in a cost of living crisis, but this is rather tight to charge customers for these facilities. Cafe, however, was clean and bright. Will not return due to the manager being so off putting

From the moment we walked in, we felt unwelcome. There were 15 of us and the lady at front of house made it quite obvious she didn’t like our children who sat at the tables and were well behaved throughout. Food was overpriced and she was extremely rude. It was as if we were an inconvenience to them. She wasn’t happy that we didn’t squeeze onto 2 four seater tables when we arrived and spoke to the lovely young waitress girl disgustingly in front of us. If I were the girls mother I’d be fuming. She also didn’t like when I politely asked for butter because our very expensive sandwiches didn’t have any on. We spent over £200 yet we saw the woman behind the counter rolling her eyes and pulling her face to another member of staff as we were leaving. Hope I’ve saved a few families a disappointing trip to this cafe.

We were not made to feel welcome on arrival, but we're spoken to as though we were irritating children at school dinners. We were immediately told all the things we couldn't do/have e g. No dogs/limited menu/no crockery outside. We didn't have any problem with this, but it was delivered in such an officious and unwelcoming manner. The person in charge was simply unpleasant to the customers and showed no less than a bullying tone to the poor youngsters working alongside her. The food and drink we had was good, thankfully, and the venue is great, but the owner needs to give his staff some training in polite customer service!

After good reviews my wife, mum in law and I visited, the lady said there was a 15 minute wait on food. 45 - 50minutes later our food arrived. Although roll was good it wasn't worth an extra 30-35minute wait. The chocolate milkshakes were okay and the vanilla milkshakes was like water. My wife did complain, I certainly would have but was talking to another customer, about his camera - bracketing and her. Otherwise they would have been told. I only found f out after I left. Only reason we were given for delay was food has to be done in order taken. If I was told there was a 45-50 minute waste I would have gone elsewhere.

We usually go to another well known eating establishment in Orton but always drive past here so thought we would give it a try for coffee and cake. The cafe was cold and even the lady serving had her coat on and scarf. Not a welcoming environment at all. We were freezing in there. The coffee and hot chocolate were really good, however there were no gluten free snacks at all, which is very disappointing, so we came away cold and hungry. Sorry but we won’t be back.

Came across this gem when we were travelling and decided to go in for a cuppa. We discovered that it offered much more than tea and scones and soon settled to choose a meal from the extensive menu and specials boards. Food was quickly presented with friendly chat. Portions were generous and perfectly cooked. Establishment was extremely clean and enjoyable. We will visit again.

Popped in on a Sunday afternoon in the summer for a bite to eat and a pot of tea after doing a spot of Sunday shopping. Couldn’t ask for better food & drink. Everything was pretty much perfect. We are quite a regular visitor & recommend to friends and family

Stayed here for one night as a last minute break, this was one of only a few places left available in the lakes area at the time,at 1st i thought it was gonna be too far out of the way for anything but im so pleased we stayed there. The place is in a lovely little village and the pub itslef is very cozy with a log burner and a real retro bar full of character, the staff work very hard and nothing was any trouble esp the scotch guy,he never stopped. I wouldnt hesitate to book again,we had a great night and returned home feeling recharged and refreshed.

We recently stayed on a two night Travelzoo deal. The hotel is finished to a lovely stylish clean standard. The pub food was lovely, fresh and tasty. We did find it a little steeper price wise to what we are familiar with. The room was nicely finished and comfortable. The light did pour through the window when cars drove past at night and also under the door from the hallway which kept me awake. The radiator in the room was technical and it wouldn’t come on so we were happy to have an electric heater too. Breakfast was continental, it was nice but we felt it was missing some meat and maybe more exciting cheeses. The coffee was lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful but out of the three we dealt with we felt one of them wasn’t so professional and sincere. Shouting things to the kitchen before the door was closed and generally a bit rude. The check in /out times were a touch late/early. Otherwise well done Dukes head and travelzoo too.
