Orissa Indian restaurant in St Edmundsbury

We arrived just after 6pm in time for the Early Bird offer advertised outside of the restaurant which stated before 6.30. The waiter eventually took our order after 30 minutes and said we had missed the early bird offer. After much haggling and a very complicated 'what's included in the offer/not included' we placed an order with the offer agreed with the waitir. However, we were still waiting for our food 30 minutes later despite only 2 people being in the restaurant! The manager was rude and intimidating. We left paying for our drinks and starter. An awful experience! Would not recommend.

Been going here for around 6/7 years and it has never dissappointed. Birthdays, celebrations, parties; staff are always super friendly and helpful. Amazing food at a great price. An all round great dining experience. I used to have the loyalty card where if you had nine meals you would get a free tenth. Sat there on my lunch break one thursday eating a korma in my workclothes - Good times!

Well presented menu, first up is some of their more original dishes with all the classics at the back. Tandoori Shashlick was delicious and Goan Curry was rich and creamy, beautifully presented. A pretty interior and good service. Reasonably priced and good size portions.

WOW found this hidden gem in Bury St Edmunds last night and we were all blown away by the food. Without doubt - the best Indian meal I'd eaten in a long time. The ambience was good, the service was great and the food was fantastic. Looking forward to my next visit which won't be too far away.

We have always rated the food here exceptional, but on another visit recently the food has changed to quite bland food ..maybe they have changed chefs ? When This happens it is noticeable the presentation and taste is not the same as it was.

I had a delivery to my property. The food is always fantastic. Good authentic / contemporary Indian food. Tastes great, full of flavour and priced well. Service is always good and arrives in around 40 mins. Great variety of menu choices.

Can only review on our own experience and can only give full 5 stars for both the Food and the Service. The menu was exceptional and we all throughly enjoyed 4 different mains. Definitely return when we next visit Bury St Edmunds

Saw an offer 50% off. So we went along only to see that in fact it’s £10 off per head, so we didn’t bother. Look, if you advertise 50% off, then that’s what it should be, not £10 off per head. With starters, main, rice, side and bread and drinks it’s like 20% off not 50%. Shame, we like it here so just stop the 50% and say £10 off per head from final bill

The tarka daal was like water and flavourless. The aloo ghobi didn’t resemble the flavour of aloo ghobi, it was as though it had been made with onion marmalade with sugar. The butter chicken was also like water and flavourless. If we hadn’t ordered through delivery we would have sent all 3 dishes back to the kitchen. What a shame as well as a waste of money.

I just had to write a review as this place is incredible from the contemporary decor and the friendliness of the owner, Adnam and his team everything was top notch. The menu had such a great selection and the staff were very helpful in describing each dish to help us choose something different according to our tastes. Every dish was cooked from scratch and while we were waiting we had a great big plate of poppodoms to munch into with a good range of accompaniments. I chose the tandoori chicken wrap and it was delicious, the wrap was a homemade naan and it was bulging full of tender chicken and salad. It was served with chilli chips and some mayonnaise as a dip and coolant which worked incredibly well. I had some draught Kingfisher with the meal. My husband enjoyed his dish which was called Mumbai Murg Masala. This was an unusual dish of chicken curry to a medium spice level served alongside salad and potato sticks and miniature naan breads (Pori). As he was driving he had a soft drink which he enjoyed. Whilst there we saw lots of people arrive with booked tables but also others who were looking for somewhere nice to eat on a Saturday night for a bit of a change. We also noticed that a lot of people had ordered takeaway food and were collecting it and some were having it delivered to their home. We visited on a Saturday night as we live in Norfolk and were visiting Bury St Edmunds for the day but we noticed an excellent deal on for July which would be ideal for people living more locally and perhaps students. Half price meals, a great incentive to help people enjoy eating out still in the current cost of living crisis. We noticed a table with a young boy enjoying a chicken korma instead of insisting on English food which some children do in this type of eating establishment. We also someone having a sizzling meal delivered to the table with great excitement and also suddenly the staff went to a table in song with a birthday cake and candles for a gentleman who was celebrating his 50th birthday. So something for everyone and for all ages too, families and couples, good choices and a reasonable price. When we next visit Bury St Edmunds and all its attractions we are sure to return to Orissa!!

Shocking lamb Pathia tonight. All vinegar no flavour. First time in 30 yrs I’ve not wanted to finish my curry. Sorry guys but it was terrible

We've eaten in at Orissa a few times recently, and enjoyed the atmosphere and the food, but had not tried their takeaway service before. Confusingly, the offerings on the takeaway menu that you can download from the restaurant's website are not quite the same as the on-line ordering system (which also seems to be on a separate web platform)... after a bit of puzzling, trying to work out which version to go with, we decided to phone our order in, using the takeaway menu as a guide. Thankfully, from that point onwards, ordering was very easy and straightforward. The food was cooked and ready collect exactly when they promised, and the order was exactly right. The food was nicely spiced and the various dishes did taste quite distinctively different (not always the case with Indian food). The portions were generous, especially for main courses. A generous order for five hungry people (four of us vegetarians), with sides, poppadoms and naan breads came to only just over £15 a head... and there were leftovers!

Another top notch meal from Orissa last night - the best Indian in Bury by far. Recommendations from me would be the Chicken Ghassi - lovely flavours - or also the Vegetarian Thali, all elements top notch. Kohlapuri also a winner. Thanks Orissa.

Extensive menu & lovely food. Staff were attentive, although when we’d finished eating & our glasses/wine bottle was empty, rather than ask if we’d like more drinks, they took everything away. Other than that, no issues at all.

I have just moved to the area and didn’t really know where to order from. After an issue with another restaurant’s website I tried Orissa. I was very impressed with the quality and taste of the food. It’s the best Indian food I’ve tasted in over 20 years. I ordered for myself and my Dad and it was very affordable. The person who delivered my food was professional and friendly. My Dad’s exact words were ‘we will be ordering from them again’, we were both very pleased.

The restaurant is will decorated and clean and the staff were generally attentive (apart from not asking us if we wanted any drinks on arrival) so I hate to leave a critical review, but sadly the food was just not up to par. The chili mushroom starter tasted like it was made with bottled BBQ sauce and the main (makhani) was so sweet it was inedible. This was mentioned to the waiter who suggested that it's supposed to be like that and next time we should order something hotter. Total nonsense. There were other oddities (where's the lime pickle?). We were offered 20% off the bill as I couldn't eat my main but on inspection the reduction was only 15%. Looking through the reviews here there are complaints about the sugar levels going back almost 10 years so clearly the feedback falls on deaf ears. For the prices they are charging I'd expect the chef to at least taste the food before sending it out, otherwise you need a new chef. Sadly we won't be returning.

On one of the coldest nights of 2022 we chose to dine at Orissa. Lovely warm welcome and a warm restaurant. To me our shared starter of Spicy Calamari really stood out as one of the best dishes I have ever eaten and our main courses of were equally enjoyable. Really would recommend to anyone as dishes were so varied. Thank you Orissa

We came to his restaurant because of Tastecard but we were so delighted with the quality of the food that we returned for another meal. Absolutely fantastic. Excellent value for money, and we savoured every moment, from one delicious bits to another. Highly, HIGHLY recommended....

Just returned from a delicious meal. We had poppadoms to start with dips, main meals with rice or naan and four drinks. Worked out at £17 a head. I had a Paneer Makani - which was really tasty and very fresh. Very friendly service, nice...

Four adults & a child visited this restaurant. Although we were one of the first customers to arrive service was extremely slow. There was a steady stream of take away orders throughout our visit which may have been the readon for the very slow service. We made an early booking due to having a child with us.On to the food. Everything we ordered was delicious, hot & well presented. We have been here before as a couple & really enjoyed our food. We will return as this is our preferred Indian restaurant.

I just visited here. The food was excellent and the service was very good. Id definitely recommend it. The bill was a little high for a starter and a main at £23.45 but nevertheless a nice experience.

Had a take away from here last night after an exhausting shift at work ! Very polite on the phone and offered us two free popadums as we live out in a village so paid for the delivery charge ( thought that was nice ) . They arrived a few mins early, and the food was amazing as usual . :)

Guys....It was awful!Very little meat, over cooked dry chicken, cremated prawns (that incidentally, were the smallest king prawns I’ve ever been served!). Sadly a very disappointing experience!!Long wait for the food, poor unfriendly service and very overpriced!!!I don’t know whether to feel angry or sad or just plain disappointed????NOT recommend at all

Ventured out to this great find while in town. Quiet but a delightful evening with a great choice of food which was the freshest Indian food I’ve ever had. Pretty sure the samosas were made to order or at least tasted like they were & partner went completely vegetarian with his choices & was very impressed with selection & flavours. Would definitely return 10/10. Thank you

We have enjoyed this restaurant from the day it opened but due to the lockdown stayed at home When now open we were nervous of going out but decided it was time to all the safe guards were there to and well sign posted easy to followthe screen were up though not a problemThe staff were very welcoming and the food was absolutely deliciouswe enjoyed our outing and will be back very soon

Orissa is our first choice for eat in & takeaway Indian food and since lockdown we have enjoyed, on several occasions now, the same delicious, freshly cooked food as before. However, I think today's was definitely the best ever. Thank you, Orissa team.

Ordered delivery for a family of four including a severely disabled child. Ordered more than 1 hour in advance with anticipated time told within 50 min..food didn't arrive so rang to find out. informed that they are busy and food not yet prepared and left kitchen so will be a further delay. No apologies or explanation. My disabled child who had waited for so long had an awful meltdown and we had a terrible evening.They seem to be capitalising on the desperation of the situation which is awful!

It was really nice spicy food that we had with our friends. Service was good. But they forgot what drinks we ordered. Friendly staff. And good quality food.

We decided to come here on the 5th January for my Birthday. Arrived to be seated straight away and asked if we wanted poppadoms etc. They arrived quickly and then got asked for our drinks order, again they arrived quickly too. We’d finished our poppadoms and they asked what we would like for our Mains. We ordered those and waited for about 10-15 mins and they arrived hot and fresh. While the food was tasty the Lamb Passanda was very tough to cut up and a little chewy. I’m not sure if my Husband mentioned anything when paying or not. The meal was lovely as always but the Lamb was a little disappointing. Won’t order that again. We will definitely return though.

I have had takeaway for years from here never one complaint but early December picked one up to take to friends my husband said it was like chicken in a soup and mine had one green bean rest was like the sauce was purée maybe a different chef but I won’t be getting my takeaway at the mo from here so sorry Orissa

Ordered a takeaway meal for two, including starters etc. from Orissa Indian Restaurant and we were not disappointed. Good portions, and good food full of flavour, and I would have no hesitation ordering from here again.

Quite a small restaurant, but very good, friendly staff, food freshly cooked. The menu has stuff quite different from your average Indian restaurant plus traditional Indian food meals, superb.

Ordered a takeaway last night from here, wonderful service and the meal was absolutely delicious; probably the best Indian takeaway we have ever had.I had the vegetarian Rogan Josh and my partner had the chicken Jalfrezi. The mint sauce complimented the dishes very well as did the refreshing bag of salad. The Naan bread and popadoms were so fresh, absolutely first class. We will certainly be visiting again and recommending to our friends and family.

Came here Friday , we ordered two different curries, we had two plates of ‘Slop’ which tasted exactly the same . Over priced, no atmosphere, feel like you are sat in a cafe. We would not return.

I only had a short time to get my meal and and only a max of £25 to spend. So zi went before 7pm and got an early bird. The meal had good flavours and was a sensible size. All great the only reason I have given them four stars is because I ordered a lamb madras and got served a chicken madras instead. The strawberry lassie and Bombay aloo was great to accompany the meal as well.

Had a really lovely meal recently. Service without a smile but I can live with that. Tender meat, a simply gorgeous light naan bread and fluffy rice. The only disappointment was the pathetic attempt at condiments. Mango flavoured sauce is not mango chutney. Barely any tomato in the onion and tomato dish. Why spoil a beautiful menu with cheap nasty ingredients just to make a pound or two?

Great meal ,very reasonable price,quick friendly service. You can see the food being prepared if you want through a large viewing window. They offer a 20% discount for NHS staff and I think support service staff -Police,armed services etc. We will be back :-)

Went on a Saturday evening with a mixed party of friends and had an enjoyable and good value feast of Indian cuisine. Staff were efficient and the restaurant and facilities were clean and well presented. It was quiet which I think is a shame for the restaurant but was to our benefit, it will definitely be my “go to” curry house going forward

We were a big group, pre- booked. Cosy bar downstairs. Friendly service. Not cheap, but ok. On the plus side the food all arrived in quick order, despite many different orders. It was hot (temperature) and spicy (my choice). Service was however patchy, as we were not well looked after fir drink refresh, none asked during the food if it was ok, if we wanted anything else, such as condiments, water for the table. No one offered a pudding menu, and basically after a flurry of activity on delivery of food, not a waiter in sight. Some of use would have had pudding, coffee if there was an offer, but instead, nothing so we got the bill. The food was ok. My side dish had some grit in the part washed vegetables. It was a solid 3 and a half stars, but I would hesitate to say it is a top Indian restaurant. To br fair, it's tough with a big group, but we have had much better service in other local restaurants.

Had a wonderful meal tonight at Orissa, my first visit. The food was very flavoursome and there was a variety of different types of curry and levels of heat. The sides were tasty and very reasonable too. The staff were polite and very helpful, especially to someone on another table that was being quite fussy wanting lots of the dishes with changes, which they accommodated with no fuss. It definitely won't be my last visit here.

Me and partner have walked past Orissa plenty of times but never gone in. However, when we stumbled across the advertisement outside the front for 50% off all food on Sunday's we thought lets give it a try. I'm glad we did, the food was top-notch! We've not had an Indian that good in a while so finding somewhere local to us is a bonus as we love our Indian food. The curries were full of flavour, the bhaji's, Keema Naan and Saag Paneer were just simply amazing! We're tempted to make another visit today (Sunday) just so we try more stuff from the menu.

I’ve been to India many times for work, and Orissa still remains my favourite Indian restaurant! Tasty and spicy dishes, served in a modern style, always served on red-hot plates so your food stays hot. And the best popadoms and pickles.

We’ve eaten here a few times and always had a great meal and service. Went here Sunday 28th and while the waiter took our drinks order within a few minutes of seating us we waited a little while for the drinks. Our food order was taken and while we waited we ate the Popadoms.

Booked a table for 6pm on Sunday 14th April - we didn't get our meal until 7.25!

Visited Orissa with a large group and we all felt the staff were attentive and coped well with our big group. The portions were generous and everything was served hot and a good night was had by all! I have had better curries but Orissa is a friendly, nice place.

The staff were very attentive on our arrival and our order was taken promptly. When the food arrived it was excellent and our party of three all agreed that it was one of the best Indian meals that we had, had for a long while.

Still a lovely atmosphere and staff are good and I don’t think they have changed in years. But whats happened to the food??? Looks the same but the taste... not good at all. Used to be great food, so maybe the chef had been replaced. I have given Orissa 4 visits, since my first bland tasteless meal, hoping it was just a hiccup. Believe me it hasn’t improved. But it is consistent, consistently bad. I shan’t be going back, even with cheap offers, tastecard and 50% reductions on Sunday. What a shame.

Amazing food every time I’ve been. Always clean inside and welcoming and friendly staff. Always end up having a beer at he bar while I’m waiting for my order. Just can’t fault the quality of the meat or cooking and spices with not too much additives or grease on curry.

Ordered on the phone and picked up from the restaurant. Food was well packed and kept hot till we got home. Food as ordered and everything was just delicious.

Ate with family at the Orissa for the first time last night. Full restaurant gave a great atmosphere and the staff were plentiful and attentive.

We used to enjoy great meals at Orissa and have taken hundreds of people there over the years but never again. We went to celebrate my birthday there for a lunchtime meal. The sign on the door stating they open at 12 noon. At 1205 a gentleman unlocked the door and said "what do you want" . I said lunch and asked if they did actually open at 12 noon. He said he would open soon and promptly locked the door! So, in the cold weather, left standing outside, my party left for a more hospitable hostelry.

Two of us ate early on Friday evening. The food was very disappointing. Large portions of sloppy food, ready served on plates not in serving dishes. Very little flavour, even the two Chilli rated chicken dish I had was bland and uninteresting. Chicken tikka masala was equally dull. Two mains and a side with two poppadums to start and a bottle of water was £50+. Never again. Service was very polite and attentive but the food was probably the worst Indian I have ever had. Sorry guys, I know you are trying.

Eaten here several times when in Bury St Edmunds, including Christmas Day a couple of years ago. Always great food and service at reasonable prices.

We eat here regularly and as we were in Bury after my Sons Rugby Training we decided to go here for lunch. We were seated straight away and within a few minutes the waiter came and took our drink and food orders. We waited a few minutes for the popadoms and even longer for our drinks. Our mains were ready before we had finished our popadoms. The food is normally beautiful, can’t find any faults but today it lacked something. We still ate it all as it was still nice, just not the usual standard.

On a recent visit to Bury St Edmunds we discovered Orissa when searching Meerkat Meals for a place to eat. This was a lucky find as the dark exterior decor of the restaurant does not alert you to the attractions inside! The waitress was very friendly and helpful in recommending suitable dishes and the food did not disappoint. We had the mixed vegetable barghee starter which was light delicate and delicious, and house special chicken curries served with saffron rice. Everything was freshly prepared and of excellence quality. Highly recommended!

Orissa has been our restaurant of choice when we have wanted to have a quality Indian meal. In this instance the quality we have trusted for many years was seriously lacking. My review is for my meal only but anecdotally my wife and sister in law were equally disappointed. To the details -

The Orissa is an excellent restaurant. My family and I have eaten hear many times over the last few years and have enjoyed each and every meal. Being a vegetarian, I am always delighted by the range and quality of the dishes. My favourite meal is the Vegetarian Thali, which I can only describe as outstanding for its delicious range of flavours. Great value too on Sundays with their 50% off food offer. I recommend this Indian to all.

I go to this restaurant when in Bury st Edmunds as its really great food which is different to the normal cuisine. There tends to be a twist to each meal and its always very good food with a difference.

Have never been massively impressed by this place but decided to take advantage of the half-price Sunday food on a whim.

We ordered mango lassi ( not on the menu) and quite a lot of things that WERE on the menu ( my husband is a big eater ) and the food was all gorgeous. The naan bread was perfect.

I do love a curry but this was exceptional. Distinct, fresh flavours the curries were faultless. We had Lababdi Chicken and Goan Sea Bass with Saag Paneer and delicious Okra Achari Bindi. Absolutely delicious. We WILL be back. What a gem.

Others better in Bury. Portions smaller than usual I think, over-priced and cooking quality not quite there.

Curry rice and drink for £6.75 Such a great value for money. The lamb is so tender, and the sauce is am.

The food here is very good but - and it’s a big but unfortunately- expect to wait - and you really will wait. Long time here for your dinner - I’ve been here more times than I can count now and each time I’ve waited a ridiculous amount of time to be served and by ridiculous I mean more than an hour between ordering a starter and the starter being served. This restaurant is close to my office and we use (d) it a lot - food is great but service is slow slow we avoid it now - best stay away be cause there are better organised places to eat in bury st Edmunds. This restaurant siim0ly cannot cope with its customers and I base this review on my last 6 visits.

Lucky enough to live a short walk from Orissa so it's always a top choice when deciding where to go for a curry. Staff are very polite and accommodating while food is off-the-charts good. Can't go wrong.

I ordered a takeaway online on 3rd December for 6 45pm through just eat. I ordered chicken korma, pilau rice, sag aloo and naan bread. The naan bread was cold, the chicken korma the chicken was dry and overcooked the sauce was very bland. The rice was hard. I ordered diet pepsi and got diet coke. Overall i didn't eat hardly any of it and was left hungry. I tried ringing but no answer so gave up.
