This pub is a rural village freehold freehouse and therefore has the ability to buy beer from anywhere and offer a great deal to clientele but not this place it just rips them off with more than London prices, the other pubs in the area one being tenants is far better value as is the freehouse a little further away in a very affluent village much better value. A real shame such a money grabbing bunch have bought this pub.

Indian food should NEVER be cooked by an English chef unless they've lived/worked in India for a lifetime... our meal was just awful... the lamb madras was grey and flavourless... the stuffed paratha was wet and warm... not flaky and hot... the price for our meal was for the portion size extortionate!!! If you're not bothered by authentic Indian food, then this is the place for you.. we are, and it was just the worst we've ever had.. say it as you see it .. and we are... sorry!!!

The best curry in Suffolk. We have been going to the Greyhound in Chevington for years, often on a weekly basis. The pub is in an out of the way village near Bury St Edmunds and the lovely team there serve great beer and great curry - what more can you ask for. I kid you not the curries are much better than what you find in a good Indian restaurant, and great value. Highly recommended.

Decided to try this based on favorable reviews - unfortunately won't be going back. Basic old-fashioned pub. Barman somewhat unwelcoming. Atmosphere okay. Gin & tonic fine. Wine not sufficiently chilled when initially served. One server personable, other server somewhat taciturn. Poppadoms claggy - undercooked? stale? Main dish overcooked, bland & watery - cooked from frozen? been in freezer too long? Side dish okay. Rice & naan bland. Very overpriced. Would recommend trying somewhere else. Perhaps the beer is better.

A traditional rural looking pub – however, Indian food their main speciality. Some British pub food is available, but the focus is Indian. We ordered Chicken Schnitzel and chips, which was nice, as we’d had Indian food the day before. But wished we’d ordered from the Indian menu as the smells emanating from the kitchen were wonderful. The pub was quite busy with take away orders of Indian food and those coming in to dine. The service was friendly.

There are multiple reasons why you can go to a restaurant, our 3 most important are; the cosy atmosphere, the luxury of being served instead of doing it yourself or simply the joy of tasting great food. So if any or more of my 3 conditions is fulfilled I consider it a good experience; a reason to go back… Entering the Greyhound in Chevington, Suffolk, UK we were a little surprised. We noticed a great smell coming from the kitchen which made us already happy but we were told that orders are not taken at the table. Instead the menu is printed and hanging on the wall and you are supposed to order your food and drinks at the bar after which the food is served at your table. The wonderful smell from the kitchen made us to decide to quickly select a table and head back to the bar to choose our menu. I personally like a spicy dish but not everybody does… At the Greyhound they have a simple but clear system explaining their dishes; each dish has a number (rating) from 1 to 12. We decided to take a mix of more and less spicy dishes and were waiting patiently for the food to arrive. It took a little while but it must be said that at the time of our arrival 4 other groups arrived at the same time so after about 45 min our food was served and now it became clear where the smell, which had surprised us when we entered the pub, came from. The food tasted GREAT and the flavors were wonderful. Conclusion: The atmosphere is cosy, not luxury neither fancy. Although they don’t have waiters walking around the service is good, friendly and correct. The food is very good, very tasteful and (surprisingly) authentic Indian… and all this with plenty of parking. We were pleasantly surprised and will definitely come back here.

I don't know about anyone else but this is very different to any Indian curry I have ever had. This is a great pub surrounded by small villages and when I come down from the North East to visit my daughter, I always hope she suggests eating here. The staff are friendly and I think she's the landlady who told us her brother brought some of the recipes back from India. I've had a few different meals from the menu and never been disappointed, portions look small but that's deceiving, a couple of starters and a nan bread and you're full. The beer is also good and it's a lovely place to walk down to in the summer and very snug in the winter, of course I will be back, each time I visit daughter willing!!!

We visited here on a recommendation from a friend. A lovely pub / restaurant family run for 3 generations serving Indian, Asia and traditional British pub meals. Our son had a Steak (mushrooms, peas and chips) which was really tasty, meanwhile my wife and I opted for dishes with a little more spice, one a Caribbean lamb the other Lamb Korma. Both were enjoyable, served with rice and we finished off with a Carrot Halva served with 2 scoops of Thurston vanilla ice cream. £12-15 per delicious main and as Aldo Gucci once said "Quality is remembered long after the price has been forgotten". Great Curry, Great Beer and friendly family run pub. It's a real old fashioned proper pub; a truly eclectic treasure trove awaits you! Certainly refreshing to get away from the usual "Ikea with Beer" model pub that is so generic on the high street today. My 11yr old son loves the chicken "thing" schnitzel. And to those that have said that the portions are too small or it's overpriced, well I suggest that you should go for the all you can eat buffet somewhere more downmarket.

We were in Chevington because we were bringing my sister to stay for Christmas with her daughter and family, who live in the village. We arrived at dinner time, and decided we would stop for a meal somewhere on the way home, which is just the other side of Cambridge. We had heard from our relatives about the Greyhound's "superb" Indian food, we assumed it offered ordinary British as well, so we called in there. And more or less instantly wished we hadn't. Why we didn't walk out, heaven only knows, we should have done, because there was no welcome at all from the two people, one male, one female, behind the bar. The place was quite busy, and it's embarrassing to stand at a bar without anyone helping you and have lots of people looking at you. After a while, one of the locals took pity on us and explained what you did to order off the incredibly extensive Indian menu chalked up on a wall - frankly I don't believe any restaurant can sustain such a wide choice, certainly no proper Indian/Bangladeshi restaurant I have been in has offered anything like the variety. We both wanted to stick to pub grub, and eventually we were able to order fish and chips, we were grudgingly pointed at a table which wasn't in the slightest bit comfortable, and the food arrived. It was OK but would never win any prizes. But it was the attitude which troubled us. This is a large village, it's just outside Bury St. Edmunds which is quite a large town and I would never call it unsophisticated. I imagine there are not a few people who live hereabouts who commute to jobs in town. How on earth does a place with such an attitude survive?I've heard of "Here be Dragons".......this was more like a concerted "Watch out, here be strangers", don't have anything to do with them (as I say, there was one shining exception) and they might go away".Avoid this place if you can.

Take it from someone who has pretty much visited every Indian restaurants around Suffolk: this is BY FAR the best Indian meal I have eaten in a long time. My usual favourite place is Little India in Little Maplestead, but since moving near Newmarket, it's a bit too far to get to, and I had not yet found another place serving this high quality food. The Greyhound is now my new favourite. The food is served cooked from fresh, none of the reheated sauce non-sense. Recipes are authentic and you can tell by how different this tastes compared to your usual Indian take-away or sit down restaurant, and by the names of the dishes all pinned on the wall as you come in the pub. Don't be put off by this place looking like your old traditional English pub, it's definitely not pub grub that they're serving there! We were truly delighted by the quality and authenticity of the food and the story that accompanies the origin of the recipes, which the staff will explain if you ask. They are a friendly bunch of people once you start talking with them. Seriously though, if what you're looking to eat is a good old greasy tikka masala, don't go there, you would not appreciate it. If however like us you want something rather special, at a really good price (£27 for 2 of us with drinks and poppadoms/pickles), then this is the place to go. You won't regret it. We cannot wait to go back! One thing though: it's a bit out in the sticks, in the small village of Chevington, in the middle of nowhere. The atmosphere in the pub with the crackling fire makes you feel really away from everything and homely at the same time. And if that's not you kind of thing.. They do take-aways !

Just moved to Chevington and can't believe my luck having such a brilliant pub within 200 yards of the front door. They always cook something special for my 9yr old son. Ate there last night and my son said "dinner there makes his week!" Always have a choice of varied beer on tap. Never seems to be the same one twice and it's kept exceptionally well by the friendly family of owners. It has an eclectic mix of bar furnishings, a real pub, not your usual "IKEA with beer" that most country pubs have turned into these days. Also has a pool table that they are happy to let my son use too. What more can I say but try it for yourself. If you don't like curry they do an amazingly good steak too. Enjoy!

Cosy, traditional village pub which serves food which is very different to (and better than) the usual pub fare. They do curries which are extremely tasty; I think the proprietors have spent a lot of time in India which has influenced their cooking. The dishes on the menu are *not* the bog standard ones which you see on every single curry house menu; however they are well described on the little menu cards on the wall. They also do a non-Indian menu - I had gammon and chips while my wife had prawn curry. Both were excellent. There's the usual range of drinks including a couple of ales on tap, I get the impression these change regularly. The beer I had ("Sunshine" I think) was tasty and well-kept.There's also a friendly pub cat. What's not to like? :)

We are very lucky to have the Greyhound as our local, and go all the time. It is a proper pub, but their speciality is curries. The range is brilliant, and helpfully tells you how hot each one is on a scale from 1-12, and includes an extensive selection of vegetarian options. The onion bhajis are my favourite, and I HAVE to have them every time I go in. I've tried almost everything on the menu now, and expectations have been exceeded on every single dish. I have rarely managed to have a pudding, but I would highly recommend the banana fritters. It is advisable to book on Friday/Saturday nights as it does get very busy, but the staff are very friendly and accommodating, and will always try and fit you in. In the winter the wood burner is lit, and places for the tables next to it are in high demand, so if this is your preference, book early! The bar has a new guest ale on almost every week, which my husband loves. The pool table is in a separate room (it takes £1 coins) if you fancy a game during your visit.I can't recommend The Greyhound enough, it's so good one of the "locals" actually lives in Bury and drives out to it every night!

The Greyhound is a cosy, historic-feeling village pub with a good range of beers, plenty of seating inside and out, and friendly hosts. What sets it apart is the food - Indian-style, prepared to a very high standard, and vastly different to the identikit selection of dishes that you get in a high-street "curry house". We've eaten there a couple of times and enjoyed it very much. They also have an English-style menu, which we've never tried. Definitely recommended.

Firstly let me say that I am well-travelled in Asia - brought up in Malaysia and Hong Kong - and I cook Asian food regularly. The Asian food in this little pub is AMAZING. Every dish is skilfully built with amazing blends of spices. I believe that one of the family who own the pub travels or lives in Asia and brings back recipes and spices. My favourite is the Goan Pork curry - not for the faint-hearted but it is to die for. Everything I have tasted from their Asian menu has been fabulous and I have been getting take-aways there for over 10 years now. At one time I used to travel 15 miles each way to get a take-away. On the wall there cards with descriptions of the dishes and rated by 'heat' from 1 to 10. There is a good range of vegetarian Asian food as well. On occasion people I have dined with have eaten the English food and that's fine, good pub food. Fabulous wood fire and there is a nice outdoor area. I can't believe this pub hasn't been reviewed before and I am delighted to be the first!

Overall a very pleasant evening. The service was extremely attentive and we were greeted warmly. I asked for the wifi password as there was no signal and wanted some way to receive a message in case of emergency and I did feel that the excuse of it ‘not working’ was a little unbelievable. The king prawn butterfly dish was absolutely terrible. Burnt and almost inedible. The rest of the dishes however were very nice. They did say they were short staffed so it was possibly a blip.

I remember the day wraps from the market and they were good value and delicious, sadly they are not the same, I had a herb paneer wrap where there is an extra charge for how you have it, what is that about!!!!???Although it tasted very good it is small and way over priced as I believe the whole menu is and does not reflect the great experience I had when buying from the market

Although we have had nice meals from here in the past, the last one was very worrying, during the nigh we were both seriously ill. We did collect the food early so I don’t know if that was the problem and they hadn’t cooked it properly !! Whatever it was it has put us off returning.again.

We booked a table for 6.30 as we needed to be in the Arts centre for 8 o’clock, table wasn’t set already , they brought out poppadums that were stale ( yesterdays I reckon ) , we ordered within 5-10mins , not a difficult order just 5 curry’s and rice , no side orders to make it easy After chasing twice was told will be 10 minutes, so at 7.40 when it still hadn’t arrived ,we had to leave as we would not have time to eat it . We were the only people in the restaurant at the time ( can understand why now ) and the phone didn’t ring once for any take away orders .
