Origins Restaurant in Shropshire

I went there for a birthday celebration and it was a true fine dining experience. The lunch menu consisted of three courses and they were all excellent. We were looked after exceptionally well by our waiter Douglas, who went above and beyond to ensure we had a good dining experience. Highly recommended.

Had the pleasure of dining at Origins Restaurant tonight. The food was quite simply fantastic. The food that was served by Dan, and his team was an absolute credit to them. The waiting on staff were fantastic, with great attention to detail. At £25 per head, for 5 courses, the value for money is not in question. The menu changes every 3 weeks, so we shall be back Origins has to be one of the best quality food restaurants in town.

The food was sooo good. The students are doing really well. Very professionally. Can highly recommend for a fine dine experience at the college.

We had a buffet Yule Meal in the Good company of The Shrewsbury Chamber. A lovely evening was had by all!

We had our WI Christmas meal here on Tuesday 14th December and I congratulate Options on providing a Covid safe environment . We all lateral flow test before meeting indoors and our table was distanced from other diners who were also nicely spaced from others. As requested we wore masks until seated and the attentive staff all wore masks for the whole of the time of our visit. Delicious food, sorry no pictures. I’m not usually keen on sprouts but their s were soft on the outside and deliciously crispy on the inside. Delicious soup for starters and a delightfuly light panacotta with berries for desert. Ten out of ten for presentation and taste. We ll definitely be back.

Took my mum for a meal on tuesday for a special treat, the food was delicious, the students worked very hard and it was a lovely atmosphere in there . We left a generous tip which the tutor and student's were very grateful and explained what the tip money is used for so we were very impressed . Thanks for a lovely afternoon x

The worst restaurant I have ever been to!!! Staff are rude! Head chef from hot fuzz has no idea how to run a kitchen. Food inedible!!! When Mr Coxon and his team were running the establishment it was fantastic.

Thai special event was OK, curry was more like a stew. Have had better meals here.

We were visiting Shrewsbury and found this restaurant quite by chance, what a gem it turned out to be. We booked a table for the Valentine’s Day evening. The meal and its presentation was absolutely first class. A credit to all the staff and students of the Hospitality and Catering course run at Shrewsbury College. I feel that a special mention should go to the waitering staff that evening, who when dealing with what could only be described as a pretentious, arrogant and extremely rude customer on the next table to me, did so with the utmost professionalism and curtesy. I’m sure that if I had been spoken to in the manner they were, this customer would have been wearing his meal and drowning in his water. Their reaction and method of dealing with this person is a testament to their training, professionalism and self control. Well done to you all.

Instead of going to eat out on the 14th, thought we might miss the rush and visit Origins on the 13th. We definitely missed the crowds, as for most of our meal we were the only people there! Therefore the meal lacked the usual atmosphere. The menu was a 7 course taster and was generally delicious and not too filling - always a worry for a couple of late middle age! Neither of us wanted 2 sweets, the deconstructed sticky toffee was lovely and enough. Maybe some local cheeses would have been better than the Eton Mess! The service by the college students was friendly and efficient but they did have a habit of disappearing into the kitchen, when we needed them - probably because they has very little to do.Very good value for money at £18 per person.We will certainly try one of their themed nights soon. Excellent food on our first visit to OriginsIt was a Thai themed evening and the food was delicious.It is run by the college for training the new chefs and service staff and was well done The price was excellent and great value for money

I went with a group of 18, which I think might have slowed the service down a wee bit! The food was excellent - as good as I've had anywhere - and the waiting staff were polite and helpful. Will certainly be going back.

Super food served up by very willing students , loved it !

The food was so good, and it was the most interesting pudding I have eaten in my life. Was £19 for 3 courses, and had complimentary mulled wine, mince pies, coffee and crackers! I would give it 5 stars but obviously this is with students in training, so the service is a little clunky, but they are learning and it doesn't take away from the great food!

I have been to Origins on a few occasions and find the food exceptional. As a training facility for young people entering the catering business it’s first class. The students and staff are always attentive and courteous. Being able to offer vocational courses such as this is, in my mind, a very important part of our educational system and one that must be maintained.

Excellent food, service and very comfortable seating arrangement ,considering it's a training resturant, in my opinion the food and experience was better than some well known establishments I've been too recently, and the price unbelievable .

Ten WI ladies went for afternoon tea this afternoon and were very disappointed to only have scones and sponge cake when we had expected lots of lovely dainty cakes as we had been promised. Sandwiches were ok but one would have thought that they would have made a special effort as the WI is known for its baking. Do not think we will be back.

Visited Origins with our friends to check on the quality of food and service. The training restaurant supplied some excellent food at very good value.The staff were attentive and in learning mode so it was good to give them encouragement. The room was light and had a very pleasant "feel". We will be back!

If you want silver service with great food this is the place to go. Ideal for a lunch. Served by college students within a restaurant environment so is good practice for them.

Went on a Friday, just the 2 of us. I can’t fault it.Great food, 4 courses, only a choice of 2 dishes for each course, but that was fine. We knew what to expect before we went. Each course was great, presented so we’ll and very tasty. Service was attentive and spot on.The price - amazing. You would pay twice as much in Ludlow or other Shrewsbury restaurants, and quality not as good. It’s staffed by college students learning their cooking and waiting skills, and boy are they good.This is a hidden little gem.Will definitely return.

Lovely 4 course evening dinner cooked and presented very well and served very professionally. Moving to the area soon and we would not hesitate to take our visitors, thats how good it is. The menu gives the impression of simplicity, but we appreciate that each and every aspect is in fact complex for these young students and we look forward to returning to try the lunch time menu. Very good value.

Went to Orgins as part as a sampling day through work and Booker Wholesalers.

First time here and booked with a little trepidation but I needn’t have worried.

Booked for the taster experience but at the last minute it was substituted for a 4 course dinner.We love Origins because....they focus on quality not quantity ! It's always educational..there's a good chance your'll be tasting something you've never had before.The price (including the alcohol) is ridiculously cheap..We go whenever we have the opportunity...it is a culinary experience.

This is my second visit to this restaurant. If you have never been, it is at Shrewsbury College of Arts & Technology, it is where students train on the job in the catering trade. At lunchtime it is excellent value at £10 for 3 courses.

We went for the theme night on St Patrick’s day there were six in our group the food was great and the staff were very friendly and the menu was excellent we were very happy and we rebooked for another evening

What a lovely venue. Bright, modern, clean and fresh. This is a training restaurant for students in the hospitality sector and as such this should be remembered; however all the students worked hard to make our evening special, from front of house to those behind the pass.

We had our wedding reception here for 30 to 40 guests and the staff couldn't have done more for us. They happily catered for my now wife, who is on the forks over knives diet which if aren't familiar, means she can't eat dairy, meat, fish, oils or processed foods. They took this into consideration and prepared her a dish consisting of mushroom risotto, a breadcrumb style cauliflower, roasted pine nuts and kale and oil free samosas. The room was beautifully laid out and the staff were incredibly helpful and professional throughout. The buffet food we asked for was prepared to such a fantastic standard and the wedding cake feature piece they created was something else! It was a croquembouche with sugar spun rings layered up the tower. They made this from fresh, just for our reception and it looked amazing. Thank you very much for all you did for us, we will treasure our memories of the occasion. Highly recommend.

This is a restaurant attached to a college so they are all students training for the catering industry under the guidance of excellent tutors. The staff were very efficient and helpful and the tasting menu was very good.

We dined here at lunchtime from the Christmas menu. The restaurant looks lovely and the tables are beautifully set out complete with Christmas decorations and crackers. Despite arriving early we were met with a smile and an offer to take our coats. The meal was beautifully prepared, tasted very good and the presentation was really excellent. We were served by trainees who had only just begun their course recently and were inevitably a little lacking in confidence despite this service was good, the students clearly try their very best to take all they have been taught on board. Considering the food was prepared by students it compared very favourably with more professional kitchens. It was lovely to speak with the tutor also, who was clearly very proud of the student's achievements thus far. It was definitely a very pleasant experience that I will be keen to repeat next time I am in the area. Thank you and well done!

I enjoy eating here as it is interesting to see how the students develop over the length of their course and how confident they become; today I had the Christmas lunch accompanied by a complimentary glass of mulled wine and each course was well-presented and cooked to perfection. I declined the Brussels sprouts, despite their being my favourite vegetable, as I didn`t think they went well with hake so perhaps a lighter vegetable should have been served with the fish. That said, the meal was first class and I particularly enjoyed the profiteroles with roasted pumpkin seeds and liquorice.

Wonderful 7 course meal which was presented & served beautifully. An impressive training restaurant which will inspire new chefs to go forward.

Based at college site this is a great place to have taster quality food at a snip of prices the college pupils learn how to engage and look after diners so it’s a win win situation.

We had the pleasure of attending the wedding reception of Cameron and Di, the venue was outstanding the staff were excellent very attentive and the food was fantastic if you take into account the most of the staff are students and still training the standard of service was exceptional I have no hesitation in recommending the venue for your special occasion

I attended the wedding reception of Di and Cameron on Friday 7th April. It was a lovely occasion, with delicious food catering for all dietary requirements. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and everyone seemed to have a very enjoyable time. I would highly recommend Origins as a venue for any wedding or party.

First time at Origins attending Diane's wedding, and going again in August when I come down from Edinburgh. Really lovely food, great location with easy parking, and the staff were excellent.

On Friday 7th April 2017, Origins Restaurant hosted our Wedding Reception. It was a fantastic day. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, who were friendly but professional. The food was exceptionally delicious. The venue itself was very clean, spacious and bright. Prior to our Wedding Day there was close communication between us and the staff, who were determined to make our day 'everything we wanted it to be' even down to the flowers & decoration. They even organised a disco for our evening guests, which went down very well! Anyone thinking of a suitable wedding venue should seriously consider Origins. A truly memorable occasion. Thank you all at Origins.

Having visited Origins 3 times and received good service and food that was generally good, if a little inconsistent in terms of portion size and seasoning, I booked an afternoon tea for 40 people for my 60th birthday. I confirmed the booking a few weeks later and was told all was fine, so issued all the invitations. Two days later the manager phoned me to cancel, stating that they had a two-day Polish event instead. There was little in the way of apology, no offer of alternative dates or any compensation. I wrote a letter of complaint but have never received a reply. I had to go to great lengths and increased expense air short notice to arrange an alternative venue. I feel they management are unprofessional and either unaware or uncaring about how to deal properly with paying customers. I will never go back.

The restaurant, part of the Shrewsbury catering college, is on the outskirts of the town, pleasantly situated, the car park has views of Haughmond Hill and the restaurant proper looks onto the greensward of the London Road, the old A5.We had the Sunday lunch menu which was very reasonably priced at £16.95. The restaurant area, unlike a lot of restaurants, was spacious and uncluttered with no kitsch.The menu was varied although availability of some dishes may sometimes be a problem depending on the time of day, but there is adequate choice..The crockery was very smart and the portions were adequate. All-in-all a very pleasant experience and we hope to return.Oh, and our waitress, Meagan was so charming, helpful and obliging without being obtrusive. Full marks Meagan!Only one small suggestion: I am a lover of classical music but perhaps the background music could be a little quieter and lighter.

Origins Restaurant is part of Shrewsbury College. It caters for the general public at the same time as training students for work in the hospitality field. The restaurant, under the guidance of a manageress, is run to a high standard. It is well laid out, has a pleasant airy atmosphere, spotless linen and attentive service. Like the dining area the kitchens are modern and one can watch the student chefs at work. We visited for lunch. The menu offered sufficient choice for most palates. Food was well cooked and nicely presented. Sensibly priced. In all a very pleasant experience.

What a very pleasant experience our lunch was today! ( Wed,15 th).It was our first time,& will not be our last. Fresh linen,fresh flowers, excellent service. Good food well presented,& served. 3 courses for £10. It was a great treat, a very relaxed enjoyable lunch,finished off with a delicious liquer coffee..It was a great dining environment for adults. No noisy kids here! It felt as if we were in a good quality restaurant. Great staff all trying their best. Will definately return.

The chef (Dan) agreed to produce a menu suitable for our party of 20 elderly people/ volunteers and he came up with a three course selection of well-presented delights that were not only tasty but very good value. Considering how busy the restaurant must be, I appreciated his flexibility in doing this for us.The students were very attentive, under the expert direction of the front of house manageress, serving us promptly and politely. We all had a lovely, relaxed meal and especially enjoyed the starters and desserts. The main courses were slightly less well cooked - rather dry fish and slightly tough beef - but overall very acceptable. Thank you Origins.

A work reunion group meet here every 3 months for a coffee, cakes and catch up. Situated in and run by Shrewsbury College of Art and Technology, it has built up a solid reputation locally as a restaurant. We are always well looked after and service is excellent. Refreshments are very good and pleasant surroundings. I intend to try the restaurant menu for an evening meal in the near future and am optimistic that the standards will be maintained.

Fantastic Evening. Great atmosphere and super Valentines menu on Saturday night. Compliments to the whole team but especially the chefs and special mentions to both Megan and Conner for their excellent service. My wife and I both had the Crab Ravioli starter which was delicious, my Rolled Rib of Beef was perfectly cooked and my wife's Chicken Supreme looked fantastic. Highlight was my desert soufflé which was perfectly executed. Great value, will definitely return.

Supervised students at this restaurant provide the food and service.11 of us went for a prearranged meal knowing that we were going to have a taster menu.What we had was probably one of the best meals any of us have enjoyed previously.There were c.8 courses and all were excellent but in particular I remember the Bril with mussels and the Venison,tremendous flavour!The service was superb and the young chefs appeared with the final course so we were able to thank them personally.Great value for money no doubt because it is a training restaurant but food and service on this night were more than a match if not better than many professional commercial establishments.

I took a party of friends to the College restaurant, origins, last night and we had the 7-course tasting menu. The quality of the food was outstanding, without exception, and the presentation was also excellent. At the conclusion of the meal we were able to compliment the staff and students individually . If you have not visited, put this on your list for your next visit to Shrewsbury. Terrific value for money and very professionally done. While some may believe I am biased as I am a governor of the College in question I can assure any reader that the bar is set even higher as a result!

We enjoyed a three course supper with the piper between each course. Oh, I forgot the Scotch Broth taster and the Robert Burns Serviettes. We had an address to the Haggis and trainee actors reading poetry plus a presentation of his very short life. Very entertaining, well done and more importantly, the food was delicious. All at £20 per head. St Patric's night next!

We held our Christmas works lunch here in December 2016. The food was excellent, room and table were set out lovely and the young staff were friendly and professional. I have also experienced the afternoon tea here which was very nice. The prices they charge are extremely reasonable. Highly recommend this restaurant and 'well done' to all the college students that work here.

Upon recommendation we traveled almost 50 miles to dine at Origins. It was well worth the drive and certainly not our last visit.. All the staff were courteous, friendly and very professional, they couldn't be more helpful. Although the portion size was not particularly large everything was cooked to perfection and presented to an amazing standard.

This was a surprise visit in which we were taken to the college restaurant without expecting it. The welcome was professional, the room practical if uninspiring and a clear view of a busy kitchen. The young man acting as Maitre D' was efficient and proper. Our red headed young lady who largely served the meal was informed and appropriately engaging with the clients which was remarked on. They were properly be-suited and smartly turned out. There was ,of course, a supervisory eye on proceedings but not intrusive.As for the meal - the terrine starter was generous in the extreme and my salmon - three ways was excellent. I consider myself a bit of a dab hand at fish cookery but my baked cod was perfect in every sense - firm flakes with a crispy, tasty topping. I have had worse in much more 'noble' establishments. The slow cooked beef was well received and the turkey presentation was excellent. Having had the 'turkey' dinner in a fully fledged hotel UK restaurant this week - I have to say this was very well presented and I am assured tasty.To conclude - if I had nor known this was a college restaurant I would have been totally impressed by the attentive service and the quality of the cooking. Surely they are full for every service. Sadly we live too far away otherwise I would be there very week!

We went here to have lunch with family and friends and were seated politely at our pre-booked table. We received a jug of cold water with ice and lemon and we ordered our drinks. The wait for the drinks wasn't too long, but it could have been quicker. The menu seemed to be very interesting with plenty of choice with meat and fish dishes. When our food arrived it was very well presented and looked very tidy on the plate. The food tasted delicious too and was of a very high quality. It was the same with the desserts: great presentation, great quality. When we went they had the 'a la carte' menu on, but they may change the menu at any time. The food is prepared by the students at the Shrewsbury collage too.Definitely worth a visit.

Great food. Great atmosphere and fantastic staff. A must for all the family. We arrived at origins to be greeted by great staff. As it was a party the lights and music where spot on. A mixture for everyone. The buffet was out of this world. Everything to choose from and more. The restaurant itself is spacious and so spotlessly clean. Definitely a restaurant to go back to wether it's for a meal,Sunday lunch or a special occasion.

Another great trip to Origins. We went for our daughters second birthday family meal. All staff are so friendly, helpful and can't do enough for you. The food was of such a high standard and so delicious. Highly recommend a visit. Excellent value for money.

Went for lunch on Friday having been told on the phone that the fixed price menu was available from Tuesday to Friday inclusive.... it is not! Friday is a la carte - at least twice as expensive! Having walked there and being very disappointed we were not offered any reduction - an offer to send e-mails of offers did not help.We have been let down before - a booking for 12 at Christmas was cancelled at a few days notice.The food is usually very good but I think it needs to be made clearer when the fixed price menu is not on offer!Visited October 2016

Thirty two ladies had a fantastic Birthday tea party for a golfing friends 80th birthday on Saturday afternoon. The food , birthday cakes ( two of them) service and general ambience was fantastic. Making the arrangements with the staff before hand was brilliant, everything on the afternoon was spot on. The chef came out of the kitchen to meet " the birthday girl", which was a very nice gesture. The chap in charge of front of house is charming and supervised everything in a very quiet but efficient manner. The young lady who served the tea and coffee at the tables was very skilled and had a pleasant attitude.All in all a lovely afternoon, everybody who attended was full of praise.Well done to all at Origins, you should all feel very proud.Thank you.

We booked for my niece's 30th birthday and we're delighted with our experience. From the moment we arrived we were greeted warmly and the service was outstanding, nothing was too much trouble. All of us ordered the 7 course tasting menu, which was attractively served and delicious. The timing between each course was just right. Then, the best surprise of the evening: a beautiful homemade chocolate 30th birthday cake, which was gracefully presented to my niece as the staff sang happy birthday to her. What a super evening! So special for all of us. Thank you once again to all the staff who work at Origins. You are the best and I will be returning soon.

Having driven past the college numerous times it has been on my list of places to try as the restaurant always looks appealing. Booked for Sunday lunch and enjoyed the fact that it was not a pub. The service and food were good and we now look forward to trying the mid week offering which is put together by the students themselves.

I attended a leaving party for 30+ guests in August. The venue was easily accessible and very accommodating to our needs.Food was tasty and well presented, and excellent value for money. Staff were attentive but gave us space at the same time, which is a skill that comes with experience, which as a large loud and talkative group we will have certainly given!We were so impressed we have booked our Christmas celebration at the same venue.It is worth mentioning, that service is slower than at other venues, but as the staff are learning it is a very safe environment for those working and enjoying themselves alike!

Origins restaurant is a Shrewsbury College outlet for putting the aspiring student chefs' skills into practice and has a well deserved excellent reputation.However our visit last Saturday was very disappointing to say the least.The worst element was the main course, with sticky rice and eight mussels, six of which were not open! When I pointed this out and said that this was a serious health risk I was told that they did not know this.I later found out that the College course students and their supervisory Chef tutors were not involved and I would like to point this out to protect their reputation.The lesson for me is that were I to go again I would check that the college students and Chef Tutors were in charge when you book as I am sure they will not let you down.

Our first visit to Origins, but not our last. Sunday lunch is highly recommended - go hungry as the portions are generous. We started with spring rolls which were delicious, followed by roast beef - my partner is a fussy meat eater but not one scrap was left (sorry cats) - it was beautifully cooked and tasted lovely. A good choice of desserts - the creme brulee was a treat. The young man who served us was charming and although we didn't choose a cocktail from his list - we may do next time! I was impressed by the drinks menu - very reasonable prices.Overall, nicely decorated and spacious surroundings with good food at a reasonable price.
