Went for quick bite whilst shopping in Bakewell. Very nice food, lovely staff, best hot chocolate ever! We had the breakfast sandwich and waffles. All cooked fresh and very tasty. Couldn't fault it. Really lovely place to go for a bite to eat

Called in for brunch and ordered bacon and egg granary sandwich with tea. The granary sandwich was a huge round roll big enough to share, with a generous portion of bacon. Cheerful staff, and I liked that you could see through to the kitchen. Looking at other customer food, portions are generous. Clean bathrooms and a nice bakery/shop below the tearoom. Tearoom is viareggio a stairway.

This was our second visit and first with children. As expected the shop was extremely busy but there was only one person serving and she was lovely but I did feel sorry for her. We tried to go upstairs and have lunch however we were ignored after waiting several minutes we left and went and had lunch somewhere else. The menu also looked very expensive.

Visited last year on our annual visit to Buxton. So we wanted to revisit, as expected was very busy in the shop. So nothing bought in the shop they were queuing out the door. (Bad management that, more staff on the counter equals more money in the till) We went upstairs & asked for a table to be told if we hadn’t booked we cannot come in. There was plenty of empty tables. I say it again if you refuse your refusing money. Fortunately I convinced the young lady to let us wait. (Wish I hadn’t) we opted for a black coffee, three teas & a latte. Two toasted tea cake 2 scones & a bake well & cream. Ok so two teas arrived & two tea cakes. They had eaten them & the rest hadn’t arrived we asked two members of staff for the rest then the two scones arrived. Then the black coffee & the tea. At this point we are still waiting for the bake well & cream. So again we prompted the staff. The bake well then arrived with custard. The two who eat first was just sat waiting for us to finish. We came out together to eat together & that didn’t happen. Was also witnessed other tables having the same issue. We didn’t get anyone checking on us to see if everything was ok. The tables around us that was supposed to of been booked still had no one on them. The price for this food was around £45 The bake well came with custard we didn’t ask for, we asked for cream. (Also tiny) the scone you could buy 4 £1 definitely not home made. The teacakes were nice. Service was not so good. Oh & the ladies loo toilet didn’t flush. Very very disappointing. We won’t be back.

We sat in the downstairs courtyard were greeted by a friendly waitress and ordered drinks and cakes. It took nearly 25 minutes for our Bakewell tarts to arrive. The waitress then brought our 2 hot drinks, though milk was provided it was in a cup not a jug,as she left the table we reminded her we were waiting for our 2 cold drinks. After 10 minutes our cold drinks hadn’t arrive so I had to go back to the counter to remind them. The Bakewell tarts were lovely and the the portion sizes were generous unfortunately, the slow and haphazard service lets it down

The breakfast here was average and it was easy to get a booking! We stopped over while visiting the Peak District. We of course had to try the Bakewell tart and pudding. The tart was fantastic! However they got our order wrong and gave us a sharing size Bakewell tart instead of an individual Bakewell pudding. The restaurant is quite small and cramped. We were told by the waiter that they would clear our table but they proceeded to seat us despite not having cleared it. Throughout our meal, the previous customers’ plates/mugs remained on our table which was a bit annoying. Next time, we would probably just buy a Bakewell tart to go in the shop downstairs.

Thought should go here as original place for Bakewell pudding. A party of 7 of our family, we had 3 X sharing puddings, and hot drinks. We were not given enough cups & saucers for the tea, my son had to ask twice for his coffee and all the tea were weak. When puddings arrived not enough cutlery was provided, good job we had teaspoons with tea. Was just over £70 for all of us which we thought was a bit pricey considering we were sharing a treat. However, the puddings were very tasty and family brought some tarts to take away for tea.

Visited having been recommended by a fellow business. Bought a large Bakewell pudding and some bread to take back to our holiday cottage. Great customer service and can get busy especially in the holidays. There is a cafe upstairs which we didn’t visit as we’d already in the pub and some gifts to smooze around. Ended up buying more Bakewells and bread during our stay and will be back. Thank you!

Came here on Wednesday and although we had a short wait for a table it was very well explained by staff members on the till when we came up the stairs (was only able to catch Taylahs name but also a gentleman). This was expected though due to it being half term in the area and we forgot to book. Taylah took our order and was very polite whilst doing so. We ordered a sandwiches and pudding with custard for afters! Leonie was our server who brought our drinks and again she was also very friendly and smiley! A gentleman (think his name was andrei) brought our food and again very friendly and helpful. The fish finger sandwich is a must!! Huge portion sizes and the curry sauce is a lovely extra! All the staff we had serving us and others we saw around was very friendly and smiley. Although they were very busy nothing seemed to much of a hassle for them! We most definitely will be back!

Group: Nanny with 2 children, aged 4 and 6. Experience: 2 very excited boys wanted to buy a small Bakewell pudding (5.75!) with their pocket money. The queue was unbelievable, 60+ people, and the line of people was to the back of the shop, not acceptable. Surly tourists (which I am not) are not nothing new to Bakewell. Unfortunately we left without purchasing, with very disappointed boys. Poor customer service.

I am genuinely sad to write this review. I visited this bakery as a child and the only reason we visited Bakewell was to come here as I had fond memories. In reality this is probably the most appalling shop and ‘restaurant’ I have ever visited. As you enter the building you are not sure what to expect, we made our way to the back and were told we could sit outside in the rain or make our way upstairs to the restaurant. Upstairs is up steep stairs with no provision for wheelchairs or prams. Once we got upstairs, like many people arriving, we were told without a booking we could not have lunch. Fortunately they said we could choose to wait and perhaps a table would become available, which we did. During our wait two staff members entered a disagreement, during which swearing was used in front of my two young children, I was shocked at this point. Next staff were wondering around with plates asking customers at tables if this was their order. Customers came back to complain and query their bills and it transpired they had been charged for the wrong tables. Given all this happened within 10-15 minutes you realise there are serious issues at this restaurant. Do they not use or understand table numbers? Also why are staff downstairs sending everyone upstairs if you need to book? Anyway we were seated and I couldn’t fault our waitress. However the table was not very clean and the highchair was grim. We were not given a menu but that was ok as we had decided from the big boards what we were eating. Only upon getting the bill was it obvious the prices written on the board at not real and the prices on the menus (which we were not given) are much higher. After all of that the Bakewell tart was so dry it was inedible. The ‘freakshake’ was awful and my child’s ‘afternoon tea’ was ok. I think overall Bakewell is a tourist trap but this restaurant operates solely on its name and history. The reality is it needs a new management team or someone to stop relying on tourists conned into eating there and give these people a genuinely nice tasteful experience. I bet there are not any regulars who would visit there. Avoid!!!!! It’s not worth it

Very overpriced for what it is. £12 for a breakfast with 1 of everything. The bacon must have been triple cooked! I'm sure there are local businesses without the "name" that are much better. A tourist trap in the Peak District

This business is very much part of Bakewell's tourist trade and is positioned accordingly. Why, however, will they not reply to emails? I have tried three times in the last month - no response, but (cheekily) they used my e-address to start sending me marketing emails. For several years I have purchased honey from the shop but my choice disappeared from the shelves. I enquired at the shop but the (friendly) staff could only say that they didn't know if it was to be still stocked. The only honey available on my last two visits has been tiny 300gm pots, priced (incredibly) at £8.50. I can buy the identical honey (from the same hives) in our local Spar shop for £5.95. Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned that in my emails, but all that i wanted to know was if the larger pots from Littleover Apiaries were to be availble in future. Disappointing.

Pros: - Food presentation - Nice atmosphere - Traditional design Cons: As a world traveller (holding 50,000 readers badge on TripAdvisor) and a blogger living here in The UK, I would like to say that this is the first time in The UK that I waited for a cup of black coffee around 30 minutes. Asked a waitress and said that "Excuse me, we have been waiting for a pudding and our coffees for 30 minutes already, would you mind at least serving us a coffee first that would be highly appreciated?" She replied to me with her unprofessional way also an attitude > "We are always busy" ????

A gem in the middle of Bakewell. Had a fabulous lunch (Derbyshire Rarebit) followed by Bakewell pudding which was delicious. Had a lovely table by the window overlooking the street and really friendly attentive service. We had already booked a table before visiting which I was extremely glad we had as it was really busy when we left with lots of people arriving wanting to eat. A fab place which is very popular and I can understand why. After lunch popped to the shop downstairs and bought a Bakewell pudding to take home for the family!! Would definitely recommend.

The food here is wonderful. Good quality and big portions! However the service is very slow and I would have given it a 5 star review if the staff were more efficient. We were left sat for a long while after we had finished our mains, no acknowledgment or anything from anyone. They had plenty of staff aswell so they weren’t even short staffed. I also would have given a tip if we weren’t just left to sit there and constantly ask for a waiter throughout lunch.

The venue is very quaint and the staff very efficient and friendly. We booked in advance and chose the afternoon tea as this had been gifted to us. The layered plates arrived absolutely loaded with food. The first layer had large seeded baps cut in half, probably six halves. The middle layer had scones with clotted cream and jam and bakewll tarts. The top layer with more tarts, fruit cake & cheese. We then received another plate loaded with more baps. Whilst the effort was appreciated, it was far too much. A typical afternoon tea would normally consist of finger sandwiches, which would have been the preferred option. The scones, which are a key ingredient, were not as fresh, possibly a day old. Overall, we were a little disappointed, but as the staff were so friendly, just didn't want to spoil the occasion. We agreed to have a doggie bag for the food we could not eat. I would still recommend the venue, as I could see the other dishes being served looked

We had a gift voucher for tea and cakes for 2 so while there we ordered lunch too. We asked the waiter to pack us the cakes, butter, jam and cream pots to take away and have later. When we opened them later we found only the tart and scones, no butter, jam or cream. Very disappointing and a feeling of being ripped off. As we didn’t want dry scones the ducks had an expensive treat. My advice is to check before leaving the shop that you have what you paid for! We won’t be returning … ever! Despite all the hype it’s not worth the expense. Go to the chip shop instead!

As I bought a bakewell tart priced at £5 plus but I asked the lady in question if they sold the cobs that we had for breakfast. She sold us what we thought were cobs but when we opened the brown bag once back at hotel later that day to see / it was a pack of 4 brown baps priced at £2 which tasted nothing like the nice cobs we had for breakfast with bacon & sausage inside them If we was living in Bakewell we would have returned them

We noticed a couple were turned away as they wanted a table for 2, even though there were plenty of vacant tables but they were all bigger, for 4 or 6. This couple were not very happy, and understandably so. The following day we went in again, this time intending to have something to eat, but were told there would be a 15 - 20 minute wait for a table for 2 - again there were larger tables unoccupied. We didn't bother, and went to another cafe where we felt more welcome.

I had the Bakewell breakfast, it was very good. Although as per the paper review, I don’t understand garlic mushrooms being part of a breakfast. Beans were also lukewarm. Other than that it was very tasty. My husband had a children’s breakfast as he wasn’t overly hungry and to be fair, it wasn’t questioned and the portion was more than generous. We specifically sought this place out while we were in the Peak District as it would be rude not to get a Bakewell Tart actually from Bakewell. They sell a variety of Bakewell tarts of different sizes at reasonable prices. Highly recommend the Bakewell Puddings...

Food was good quality and would certainly recommend a visit. However disappointed that pancakes were warm with very little maple syrup. Custard provided with an excellent Bakewell tart was tepid. If it had been cold or hot I would have been happy but tepid wasn't...

We called for afternoon tea. The outside area was busy and we were asked to wait for a table whilst it was cleared. Meanwhile a family came from a different angle and took this table we were waiting patiently for. We were however found another...

Wonderful Bakewell pudding...not to be faulted - unlike the ignorant counter staff who seemed to prefer to gossip rather than serve customers quickly or politely. Customer care training required.

The food was dreadful and expensive. Can’t say it any plainer. Schnitzel was burnt and poorly presented. Pasted was soggy. The very worst was the waffles which had been microwaved and were solid! Just the two us for a birthday meal with one drink each and it cost £91!
