The bao buns were absolutely incredible. We tried the BBQ ones and the Katsu chicken ones. Both were fresh and so flavourful! I also had the carrot cake which was DELICIOUS! It was just the right level of sweetness and it was fluffy and moist. Great job guys!!

Fine dining in Barnsley may seem like and oxymoron, but believe me when I say the food we enjoyed tonight was absolutely delicious. The set menu was well put together with items that I might not have tried if I'd been given a choice but, that said, they were fantastic! Everything was well prepared and cooked, but if I had to pick a favourite it would have had to be the Beef Short-ribs, closely followed by the French Onion soup, Monkfish, goat cheese Choux and Poached pears! What a great training ground for future Chefs, and Front of House. So…. Why aren't you already trying these events? Your missing out!!

We booked for the taster evening and the food was superb. The young people do such a good job. It's a wonderful way to try foods that would usually come with a much higher price tag. We take our teenage boys so that they can experience this and they love it.

Visited today, there were 3 in our party and we had a brilliant visit. The mushrooms with black pudding and Harrogate blue, amazing!! 2 of us ordered smoked haddock which had run out but the quick thinking team offered us salmon instead which was divine! Third in party had chicken chasseur which was huge but gorgeous!! For pudding we shared (stuffed by now but couldn't resist) bonfire sundae and homemade Yorkshire parkin with spiced nutmeg ice cream, beautiful!! Well done all you talented young people. To say that this was your first service due to covid you all did amazingly well and we will be back before Christmas to see you again and enjoy some more amazing food!!!! Forgot to stop eating the mushroom before I photographed it sorry ...

Absolutely lovely. The young people cooking and serving are still learning but they work so hard and try their best to get everything perfect. The ingredients are good quality and any minor imperfections are easily overlooked given the inexperience of the students. It is a great opportunity to try new dishes and flavour combinations without breaking the bank. We have been twice for the early bird special and would highly recommend it.

Been here a number of times since finding out about it in September last year. It’s probably one of the best eating experiences in Barnsley. All food cooked by students and served by students with staff overseeing. The quality is fantastic! Most recently visited this week for the Burns Night evening. Served 2 canapés; hot scotch egg with piccalilli and mini fish and chips with pea purée. All very good. Followed by cock-a-leekie soup and then the fish course of Scottish smoked salmon and hot smokies with a dill mayonnaise. Again, quality unparalleled locally. The main course was a guinea fowl and haggis number which was delicately flavoured and well received by all. To finish was a chocolate mouse kind of thing, not sure to be honest but it was well flavoured and not too heavy. All in all another very good experience at very reasonable cost. This kind of place needs to be supported by the locals which is definitely something that I will be doing going forward. Day time through the week is another opportunity to give this place a go. The training students also give an element of humour to the experience; try it and you will know what I mean.

Took my elderly parents for afternoon tea and we all thought it was fantastic! We had open sandwiches of cheese and pickle, ham hock and onion, coronation chicken and smoked salmon. The next tier had chocolate brownie, apple tart and a lemon curd biscuit, they were all delicious. The top tier had sultana and cherry scones which were so fresh that they were still warm. We had a really good tea from a new supplier called Barnsley Brew which is based in Grimethorpe. I spoke to one of the students who told me that everything we had was made by the students. Well done to you all!

We were a group booking of 20 people for their 3 course lunch and as always they did a good job. The service was good and the young staff were very pleasant. The food, which is such good value at £10.95 for 3 courses, was cooked well, piping hot and very tasty. The price included tea or coffee at the end of the meal.If you have not tried this restaurant then it is well worth a visit.

Prepared, cooked and served by college students. Two courses for £8.99 or three courses for £10.99. Extremely good value for excellent food. My treacle tart was one of the best I have ever had. You have to remember the students are learning so be prepared for a few mistakes but they all try hard to please. Would definitely recommend a meal here.

Barnsley College have built an amazing building on the Huddersfield Road edge of town and it houses a beautiful modern restaurant.Named " The Open Kitchen ", it lives up to its name by giving diners a view and sound of the whole operation from Reception through to Preparation, Ordering and Serving. All done by College Students !The experience is quite different to the normal perhaps secretive one when dining out but was rewarding and refreshing. We booked a table for lunchtime on a Friday.Tables had been accurately laid by Students who met us in the reception area, lead us to our seats and had been trained to offer to take our coats, and settle us in our places.Order taking was efficient and knowledgable. From the menu we chose a three course option priced at £9.95.A Senior Citizen two course option was £7.00.Starters of Soup and Prawn Cocktail, Mains of Seared Salmon and Pork accompanied by mixed veg., and Desserts of Bread and Butter Pudding and Chocolate Brownie were our choices and all were delicious.Staff and Students combined to make this a rewarding experience and one which we certainly intend to repeat and strangely I feel the urge to say "Well done " - perhaps because I felt a little like an Examiner !

This was our second visit to what used to be known as Zest Restaurant, now the Open Kitchen. The name might have changed but the standard remains just as high. The cleanliness hits you on entry and this is followed by service given by the staff which must be unbeatable anywhereo and must be seen to be believed. A special mention here for Kiera who attended our every need in a bubbly and friendly manner. On the down side, the napkins are a disappointment being so thin and fragile.Pricey? Not at all, very reasonable. We are returning next week- can't wait!

I really like the starters from here but I find the main courses disappointing. The meat in the main dishes seems a bit mushy and not very tasty as if it has been soaked in that stuff they use to tenderise meat. I usually buy two or three starters instead of a main meal.

On Sunday 27th October we had my mothers 100th birthday family party. There was 25 of us for Sunday lunch, the meals were wonderful enjoyed by everyone of us. Everything was hot and with loads of vegetables served in side dishes. Lauren and her staff were excellent and nothing was too much trouble. Not only dealing with our party they were serving other customers too. Well done we definitely recommend the Travellers Inn and will be returning soon.

Came with our 6 year old. Lovely meal. The children's menu, although not many options, was good quality and large portions. The tapas were also very good quality and good sized portions (maybe 2 each is probably enough, or 3 if really hungry). The staff were very friendly and attentive. Good atmosphere in the resteraunt. Will definitely come back.

We’ve for bottomless brunch for 1.5 hours, had to go to the bar ourselves for every drink we’ve ordered since. After finishing a bottomless brunch at 3pm, we were told to be quiet after 5:30pm after buying 2 bottles of Prosecco and cocktails and shots after our brunch finished. Then were told by the manager to be quiet, after spending over £300 a between us, we. Felt very welcome, we could have gone other local places that welcomed us, or gone to a larger place in Barnsley, did not expect to be kicked out after 3 hours, won’t be going again, absolutely shocking. Worst bottomless brunch ever, staff was great, and we left a tip until the manager came out, Shocking.
